Great belt explanation for the 400. I'm looking for advice for a similar problem. I have replaced both belts. Everything appears to work except the disk, once loaded into the player slot does not rotate. "Cannot Play" appears.
hello great video learn a lot only thing is the disc ok you put them in the wrong but if you ask me sony should have had the lens on that side it would have made a better view of disc when you open the door.
Thanks !!! Took mine apart 3 years ago and just put the belt back on and it worked up until last week. I had ordered the belts when I had it apart so finally put them on, thanks again.
Thanks Mike! Your instructions made this repair relatively easy and that probably (okay, definitely) wouldn’t have been the case otherwise. I spent far more time handling the CDs than changing the belts and found the first (largely obstructed by the “shroud”) belt to be the most awkward. I really appreciate your help with this!
Hi Mike. Thanks for your great video on how to replace the table drive belts. The problem you had when first loading the discs (you put them in backwards), could have been avoided if you had noticed and read the small black sticker located just above the door to the unit. I have also found out (the hard way) that one should not pick up and tip the unit while it has several CDs inside, as they fall out of the turntable slots and can jam things up inside if the unit is on (or gets turned on thereafter). Just mentioning this here for any others who are about to work on one of these Sony jukebox devices. Otherwise it was a very helpful video and I gave it a like. I wish I had the patience and the tools to make informative videos, but thankfully there are wonderful people like you to make lives easier for the rest of us. Thanks again!
Just fixed the same model. Found some loose CD's in the case which was not a good thing, Changed one belt. We are back in business. Going to do the same thing to a Sony 300 CD model. I will order belts as this might need the door belt. Thank you fir a great job. B-)
I found it much easier to get the belts on by removing the whole back panel. Easy to get both hands in that way. Thanks for the video so I knew what I was in for.
Thanks for the video. I have the CDP-CX400 since 2000 and haven't used it in the past 5 years when both belts lost elasticity. Thanks for the link to where to buy the belts as well.
great video, just bought a mint but originally belted SONY CDP-M555ES on ebay and wanted to do bet replacement asap before I use it. great channel sir.
Just picked up a fully working cdx455 for 10 dollars plus 400 cds included, it's a very nice player, the loading mechanism is slow between songs /cds compared to the older 300 disc Sony I have but the interface is better and now I can control both with the one player, great video, and I have done many of these, the more you do the faster, and better you can do it, tks for sharing how to do it.
Your video was a great help. Thanks! I was able to replace the two drive belts on my CDP-CX455 and it worked fine for a while. While the mechanical loading, rotating the carousel, and door mechanisms all work fine, the playback sounds very distorted after the unit has been running a while. After it has been playing CDs for a while, it cannot read the table of contents on some CDs. After it has been off for a while, it plays the CDs it had trouble with just fine for a while and then the playback starts being distorted on them. I suspect something is overheating. I tried running the unit with the top and rear covers removed but still had the same problem. The CDs in the unit are all home made copies that play fine in another CD player. The only thing I can think of is that there are a lot of errors on the CDs and that some component in the unit is spending a lot of time dealing with the errors and overheating. Much more likely than this is that something else is going on. Has anyone else seen this and fixed it? Again, thanks for taking the time to make and share your video with us. It was a huge help. Michael
Hey Mike, It would be nice if you were in Indiana. I have the Sony 400 disc player. And, it needs someone like you to help me fix it. LOL. Thanks for making the video.
I received 1-carousel belt , 1-CD loading belt & 1-Door belt I just replaced both drive and loading belts on my CDP-CX455 and I a have a third belt for the door. Does the CDP-CX455 have a door belt, if so how do you replace this belt? Jesse
I have the same one. The unit comes on but the CD carousel will not move and it says cd 71 like it is stuck at it. even if I manually move it to cd 71 and place the CD in there it's still says the same thing and will not do anything. When I push open the door will not open by itself but if I manually open it it will then close by itself once I unplug the unit and plug it back in. I know a belt is probably causing the carousel not to turn but could that be causing the whole problem I have?
Thanks for your reply, Mike. I opened the changer and replaced both belts, but the problem has not been repaired. I observed operation in the "all discs shuffle" mode while I had it opened. The unit does in fact insert and spin the next disc, but it seems to get stuck trying to choose one of the tracks on that disc. I also cleaned the lens for the disc, but that did not help either. Do you have any additional suggestions?
Do these belts REQUIRE grease? It seems the belts in my unit have grease on them. Should the belt drive pulleys be CLEANED of grease before assembling?
Glad to be of help. One of the benefits of changing the belts with the unit standing on end is it prevents the belts from falling into the grease while changing.
Hi Mike! I used your video to replace belts in two Sony CDP models - a CX455 and a CX300. I have run into an odd problem. The CDP455 plays CD's fine up to slot 130 - any CD's added to higher number slots just never load. It appears tha the unit "tries" a couple of times, then goes to the next disc - it keeps doing this - without ever actually playing the discs - up to slot 212. I am thinking that the "picker" mechanism is at fault, or maybe the carousel platter is slightly askew and so the unit can't pick the CD's? A successful load process is as follows - you select the disc, it picks the disc, you get the TOC READING message, then I hear the high pitched sound of the CD being read, then pressing play plays the CD. The other higher numbered slots you hear the pick mechanism, but never the high-pitched whine - so the CD is not being read - then the player goes to the next higher numbered disc and repeats this. I did clear the memory of the unit a couple of times. It looks like there is a CMOS battery that may be the original. I will try replacing this to see if that helps. Understand if you cannot answer. Great tutorial. I am going to hook up the 300 model now to fully test it. Thanks again! 5 *****!
Mike, my old cd 400 gave up the ghost, when I opened it up the belts had turned to a gooey mush not unlike road tar, cleaning it off the pulleys was a nightmare. The only solvent I had that touched the goo was acetone, unfortunately it also started to eat into the other (whitish plastic) components. An hour later and a waste can full of makeup application swabs, (not unlike hard q-tips with with one pointy end) I had managed to clean it off the pulleys, btw the acetone doesn’t effect the actual pulleys. My question, since I had to remove the large pulleys from the mounting post. Is do you have any idea about what kind of grease to use?
I have a CDP M555ES 400 disc changer that operates perfectly for 20 to 40 minutes but then it gets stuck when it attempts to change to the next disc. On the display it keeps scrolling through the disc numbers, but the carousel is not turning. This continues until I turn the unit off. I can turn it back on and it will operate perfectly for 15 to 30 minutes when it again gets stuck. Do you have a solution for this?
I have this Cd Player and while it works fine it starts to skip CDs once it gets to # 50 it starts to rotate back and forth without stopping until I move the dial to #150 it works fine until you get to like #330 and it does the same until you get to the #430 slot. Any ideas ?
Hi, sorry to hear you are having trouble with the repair. I am in CA. One critical thing to examine - make sure no grease is on the belt or wheels. Best wishes, Mike
wow that was great to bad you was not in Williamstown pa id ask you to fix mine I brought mine to this Vietnam con in tower city Pennsylvania sob took $40 dollars to open it never did shit for 5 months it stay there then he said I could not fix it shame you did that in under 6 mins wow

Good advice about not tipping the unit with discs loaded. I did that and jammed up mine.

thanks for the tip, and thanks for watching
Thank you! I've got a very similar CDP-CX400 Sony CD player that was making awful noises. I opened it up, and saw a belt was off the pulley. Success!

Have you tried basic trouble shooting? Like plugging the player into a different preamp?
Hey Mike,

Excellent information.

yes, sounds like you also need the door belt which requires a bigger tear down

Do these belts REQUIRE grease? It seems the belts in my unit have grease on them.
Should the belt drive pulleys be CLEANED of grease before assembling?
Neil Helgeson Definitely don't get grease on the belts or pulleys. That will cause them to slip and the machine will not function properly.
@@ianhillman4007 It looks like some grease migrated to the pulleys over the years.
Cleaned up and replaced the belts. It works as good as new now.
@@neilolif good to hear. Glad you're back up and running. Cheers buddy 🍻

Thanks for watching. Replacing the belts is my only expertise on these units. Glad it helped.

White lithium and use very sparingly. If there is clean excess grease on another component in the area you could grab some of that.
Hello, thanks for the great video.
How do you fix the fault at 8:05?
Thanks.
I had installed the disks backwards. Thanks for watching.
In the back there is a plastic thing, take it out , is easy to change two belts.
Have replaced my belts but my cd is still skipping can I pay you to replace mine are you in the dc area
Thank You Sir,very helpful.
Whats the name of the belt that goes on the bottom part
There are 2 belts - one for the door and one for the CD changer.
Where is the best website for purchasing belt replacements?
don't know, try to buy genuine
Code error 32 means it needs rubber belts?
Sorry, don't know.

sorry, no...start with a good cleaning of the inards
Great video! I’m having trouble finding new belts! Where do you get them? I’m in Canada but would be fine to order
Thanks for asking. I updated the link in the video.
Are the two belts the same, and is the door belt smaller?
not the same...yes
