It's awful bc here in Mexico, Apple sued the small, local companies that fixed the iPhones for cheap, making any iPhone repairer illegal, and forcing anyone who wants a repair to go directly to them, where of course, they charge the triple of those local repairers. Now, of course, there is a black market to repair iPhones for cheap, which is even more likely to get you scammed, which was the excuse they used.

What producers of products DON’T have some sort of version of this? I’ll never understand people who think technology purchases should last forever. If I own a 5 year old iPhone, should it work just the same as a brand new one? Okay, so holding back performance and penalizing the consumer of a BRAND NEW DEVICE would be better practice? I honestly think this video should’ve been solely aimed at Android phone makers. Everyone I know still uses an older generation iPhone. And they work great.

Taking back old phones and other electronics (especially since we can't repair them) from users should be mandatory for tech providers. They would be more conscious about the quality of used materials. Also tons of waste could be recycled (since the companies know their product best).

Great video! Also Apple is aiming to be a 100% circular business by something like 2030, yet at the same time their sustainability report keeps talking about how their initiatives will allow them to sustain growth. To me this is such a contradiction, because if you want to sell more products infinitely, but use recycled materials only, at some point you'll still run out of materials... And that's without mentioning that 1) they're basing their whole strategy on the lower value-retaining tactics of circular economy (recycle instead of reduce, reuse), and 2) as you pointed out with the ear pods also they keep innovating in a direction that is more high tech thus requiring more rare minerals ie lithium in this case for batteries in a product that didn't require batteries before. Make it make sense.
So yeah.... They're better in a sense than the rest of the industry, but this business model is still very unsustainable

After 7 years or more of having Android phones, I got a 13 mini a few months ago.
The first and last iphone that I had, the 3gs, was a complete locked mess which I got rid of in a few months, for an Android. And I hated Apple for a lot of stuff, including the planned obsolescence. BUT. Looking at the market, especially in Europe, Apple and Samsung are the most popular smartphones. Following up with more Androids.
What are you getting for an iphone, be it flagship or not? At least 4-5 years of software and security updates.
What are you getting for a cheap to medium android? Maybe a few security patches. What are you getting for the flagships? Maybe a major software update.
And yes, the Pixel phones exist, which may get an extra software update, but other than that.. you get my point.
I have friends still using iphone 6. Many generations later.
Yes, the companies and all the tech companies should be responsible of making you realise that you don't need to update your phone yearly. Will they? No. It's up to us. And if we had to choose the phone that is offering us the most privacy and the longest period of updates, that would be the iphone, as much as I used to hate them.
As long as we're taking care of our phones and not treat them like a disposable tool, we can work against the companies plan to have us change them as soon as possible.
@Levi, great job man! Keep it up!

You're absolutely right - I'm still using my iPhone SE that I bought second hand from a friend in 2017 after 1 year of use. I also owned iPhones before that always lastet me many, many years whilst my parents changed their android devices after a few years due to different technical problems.
As long as we use the devices to the very end we can avoid the marketing tricks of techsellers and also profit from things like the recyceling program. This way we are minimizing the environmental impact due to good recyceling technics and also reduce the impact on our wallet caused by purchasing a much needed new device. I think in cases of longterm useage before exchanging the device into a new one, these recycling programs make perfect sense.

Love the video, gives a good insight into the problems with tech in general. I think there are many more topics we should be talking about, so hats off that you managed to scope your video and keep it under 10 mins, but here is what I'm thinking: We have to expand the conversation to all tech companies, bc it is not only Apple who uses these techniques; we have to talk about the environmental and social impact of all the minerals that is used in gadgets and higlight that our resources are limited; we also have to look at the consumer side when it comes to consumption: we keep buying devices not only because of apple's brilliant emotional branding but also because of service providers buy our loyalty (or lock us into a contract) by giving out free phones every second year, or because our kids already have everything, so to show our love we "have to" buy an expensive smartwatches/ipods. So there is a lot going on here, and I think we need longer, deeper discussions. This video is a great start, well put, easy to digest, so I hope a lot of people who haven't been thinking about this got interested in learning more.

Another thing about Apple's recycling program is that they accept devices from other companies as well as accessories such as chargers and cases. I'm glad that they're recognizing the profitability of collecting these post-consumer materials vs. using raw materials. At the end of the day, I'd rather they stay in circulation (even if it makes a megacorp some money) than end up in the trash.

Again, you’re wrong about consumer motivations. I use an iPhone because I find them easier to use than android. I tried the latest Samsung galaxy a few years ago. I used it for 6+months and hated it. It did a lot of things better, but some not. And the iPhone just fits how I use the device. I’ve been an avid PC user for most of my adult life. I still prefer them generally. But after acquiring a Mac, I was flabbergasted about how easy it was to integrate things like image files. That said, I HATE a lot of the hidden functions that apple likes to use in the name of streamlining. I also hate not having a jack and have resented it on multiple occasions. I’m also not the kind of person who would spend $200 on any headphones, much less on some that I would probably lose on the day I get them. I buy my iPhones used and years after release and donate my old ones to needful charities.

@Sergio Alberto Romero ---- Perhaps your goal was to bad-mouth Apple or perhaps you're simply ignorant of how things work. Allow me fill you in. Apple builds the best on-device speakers in the industry. Don't want to use any headphones, not a problem. Listen to on-device speakers or wirelessly send the sound to something like the Home Pod mini to hear in high quality. Still not happy with those options, Apple and about a dozen other companies sell wired headphones that plug into the lightning port. This has been the case since the 3.5mm jack was removed. So there are 4 basic ways to listen to sound and 3 of the 4 don't use battery.

7:45 - this is basically the case in Canada with the phones you "buy" on contract - you have the option of paying, say, $40/month and keeping the phone after your 2-year contract is up, or paying less (say, $20/month) and giving it back at the end of those 24 months.
This means you basically rent a $1500 phone for 20/month and give it back after 2 years because, let's face it, that's when most people upgrade anyways.

I personally have had only three smartphones, iPhone 4, galaxy s7 edge and Nokia 7.2 which is my current one. Gotta say I really like Nokia the best. It cost me just 250€, and it has android one. Which means no manufacturer bloat. Since I don't care about photographing much or playing some high performance games on phone (which is really weird btw :D and uses battery lilke crazy), it does all I need it to do and it's pretty fast because it's essentially stock android.

  • @MrMoogle

Many people don't realize how much difference a battery replacement can make and that's because manufacturers try to hide it. I'm sure Apple was not pleased when it all came out a few years back when they were busted slowing phones with older batteries and had to offer the battery replacement program for $30. People quickly realized the new battery made the phone like new so they didn't upgrade and Apple missed a sale. Yet with time and Apple trying hard to make people forget, many have forgotten that's still an option (I think it's $80 now) and it can really make an older iPhone like an iPhone 8, X, or XR like new again. Thankfully, Apple supports the software for a very generous amount of time. You just have to keep the hardware going.

One is the Business division where they aim to sell as much as possible to please investors and the other is the Sustainability division. Both are dedicated to their work and top leadership want both to succeed. But unfortunately that's not the best way to do things!

I don't know if Apple "necessarily" has planned obsolescence. I have had my iPhone for over 5 years and it still works great! It can run the newest apps with ease. If you have a case and a screen protector your iPhone can last forever. The only "repair" I had to do was after 4 years I had to get the battery replaced, but lithium-ion battery depreciation is unavoidable and Apple replaced it for me.

Apple is one brand I replace my used non-iPhone & bought-new iPhones with new as close to the release date as possible. Because they don’t do “sales” as a typical sales tactic, the resell value holds up well, for electronics anyway. It more importantly provides maximum usable time with the device before needing to upgrade, which I then turn in at maximum value (typically up to 3-5 years for iPhones) or pass on to family members with less capability needs, thus extending economic & ecological value before considering recycling (with computers & consumer gadgets anyway). I have a love-hate relationship with Apple but live in that universe after suffering worse effects with competitive products.

Odd choice. You’re still using an 8 year old Apple Laptop (as am I) that is still supported in the current iOS - and Apple OS upgrades are always free. To the “planned obsolescence” point - that Apple made regular headphones obsolete and your only option with new iPhones was air pods … not so. When they removed the headphone jack, they shipped their new iPhones with wired EarPods that plug into the iPhone’s lightning port (charging/multi use port) so you could use those, or buy expensive air pods if you prefer wireless. My iPhone is 4 years old and still works fine. No plan or need to replace it any time soon. This video misses the mark on several points.

well tbh research shows that the phone people use the longest time is the iphone. so repairability doesn't seem to be the big problem. most people will replace their phone when it becomes slow and the iphones stay fast for longer so get used longer. the fairphone is a great idea but has a way slower processor so people will probably still replace it before it breaks because it will get frustrately slow at some point. but it would be best if every phone was easily repairable of course

Seems like a missed opportunity to call out what Android / Windows devices which are also on the same boat. For me, buying second hand is always a no-go. The biggest annoyance to me regarding my phone use is battery life which deteriorates over use.
Even if I can get a phone for half price used 2 years in I'd much rather buy a new one going down a tier or two on the pricing ladder instead.
Similarly, the biggest barrier to the Fairphone is price, needing to pay double for the device up front to have repairability as a feature... Or I could just buy a phone, and the new one 2 years later for the same money, and probably a 3rd using the money I would have had to pay for those spare parts on the Fairphone.

Recently I maxed out my iPhone 11 Pro Max and I tried deleting some pictures but it didn’t amount to much so I had two options, buy a new iPhone 13 Pro Max w/ 512 GB by trading in my current phone and getting a $420 discount after trading it in or buy a used iPhone 11 Pro Max with 512 GB of storage that looks brand new for $325 because my phone was valued at $700 at the store + I had the original box which they added $50 more to the trade in. I ended up taking my talents to the used phone store and I negotiated the price which I only paid $268 for a brand new used phone. At least my old iPhone will be sold to someone who needs a phone but doesn’t want to or can’t buy the newest iPhone and Apple doesn’t get my phone to sell at their refurbished store at a higher price than the trade-in.

It is common to people to have a "used iPhone family heritage", where one buys the new one and passes out the old it to the rest of the family in a cycle. They also want to stop that, you need now to buy a new one to everyone. Used phones make no profit for them, if more people buy new is less legacy devices they need to support.

I don't think repairs are the issue with regards to obsolescence for iPhones. While you can't to repairs yourself, they are expensive and Apple makes it needlessly complicated for independent repair shops, you can still find replacement parts and repair shops offering repairs for iPhones that by now are more than 10 years old.
That is lightyears ahead of what any other phone manufacturer offers.
The difference is even more apparent in software support. The iPhone 6s released in 2015 still get's the newest software, the Fairphone 2 released in the same year is stuck on Android 9 from 2018, which it got in 2021.
That said outdated software is still a common reason for an iPhone to reach EOL. Eventually important apps stop supporting old iOS versions and the phone becomes unusable.
Apple's software support is still much shorter than what Windows offered until they screwed us over with Win11 and much worse than Linux.
All in all iPhones are probably the most long lived phones available. The availability of repairs and comparatively long software support makes it attractive to hand them down to relative and friends rather than putting them in a drawer or recycling them and their excellent value retention makes selling them an attractive option.

I don't really agree that the solution is buying used phones. I think that it is much better to buy better phones, phones that are repairable and will last longer. Only by buying from companies like fairphone we can show to the phone industry hat there is a need for long lasting ethically made phones.
