    • @huldu

But if you take steroids to get into that kind of shape, those aren't "real" muscles per say. That's why the transformation is so big once they stop taking them. Compare a bodybuilder to someone just really strong(and not on steroids, ie not trying to be a bodybuilder) and you see a big difference. I'm surprised steroids aren't straight out illegal because something tells me it's only going to get worse.

      Really disrespectful comments on here.
Ronnie paid a horrific price. He pushed his body too far. His entire back was fused with more metal than can be imagined. He continued to train on painkillers. He was all smiles after surgery, commenting how great the oxycontin was. What really happened was more than one incident with a 4 rep 800 pound squat. Who knows what the overall cause was. But when all your discs are impacting the spinal cord, it might be wise to assume GH effected the cartilage... Regardless, he achieved an incredible physique and is one of the happiest men on the planet. Still loves to train and works on recovery. Life is more than trophies and photos, but he had plenty of both. If you're going to criticize, stay objective and respectful.

I've got 20 years of bodybuilding under my belt, 25 - 45, quit 22 years ago. The first month or so I lost about 20 - 30 percent of my gains, and the rest disappeared over the following 2 years. The body simply returns to its starting point (since it no longer has to adapt to any given workload) and if you remain active and maintain a sensible diet you would never know that you once were involved in the activity. And no, muscle does not turn to fat (it's an organ) and is the opposite of the claim made by some that they can turn all their bodyfat (it's a deposit) into muscle. I enjoyed the activity very much, but once I got into my 40's I simply lost interest.

This is no different than most athletes. To get to the shape and size these guys were, it takes tons of food, heavy weights, consistency and in the case of pro bodybuilders, PED's. When you stop competing, you might still lift a bit but its for different reasons. I am sure all the guys have to continue with small doses of testosterone but thats pretty common in these days with a lot of men over 40-50 (male hormone replacement clinics). So you would not expect these guys to stay at the size and shape they were. For what purpose. Bodybuilding is a tough sport. Its hard on your body, inside and out. PED's, if taken in access, can add to the issues later in life. The smart ones make their mark and get off stage. They downsize for health reasons. Think of it this way, obesity does not take into account someones body makeup (fat vs muscle). When Ronnie stepped on stage at 300lbs, he was considered morbidly obese. Period! Whether your a muscle man or a fat slob, its still a strain on the heart and joints. So of course the guys are going to downsize. Some more than others. Jay looks the best of the lot. Shawn and Paul look like they had their fill of the gym and are enjoying eating a bit too much. Tom Prince had some pretty severe health issues so he has brought his weight down A LOT (he looks like a buck 60 at the most). Ronnie is just stubborn and he loves the gym. He does not look good but who cares. If he is happy, then great. He can hang his hat on the fact he is the one and only GOAT. Nobody compares. What I hate from people who know nothing about nutrition and body chemistry is the saying "when you stop lifting all that muscle turns to fat". Thats like saying if I sit a stare at a nickel long enough it will turn to pure gold. That is not what happens at all. To put on muscle, you need resistance type training. The muscle adapts by increasing in size. When the stimulation ceases, the muscle cells shrink. They do NOT turn to fat. If you eat more than you should or the wrong types of food, you add fat, which is a stored energy source. You can add new fat cells but they never go away. They can be reduced in size by proper nutrition and exercise. Let me put it this way.....lets say as a bodybuilder in the off season, you needed 5000k calories to add a few pounds over the course of a few months. If I stopped lifting and continued to eat 5000 calories, my caloric needs will drop. Muscle cells will shrink and since I am now eating way more than I need, I get fat. To make matters worse, muscle burns calories all day long. Fat cells do not require calories. So as I shrink the muscle cells, I am also impacting my metabolic rate. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn. Its that simple. Let see if Bolt can still run at his record breaking level. Not happening. So we also have age to combat. As we get older our testosterone levels drop and our metabolism drops as well. Father time is cruel!
