Holland Tunnel Construction

- Eighty four years ago this month, the Holland Tunnel, linking the island of Manhattan to New Jersey under the Hudson River in the USA, opened to traffic. Two 16ft long shields, weighing 400 tons, excavated the twin tubes. On a good day, the shields, with a forward thrust of 6,000 tons, advanced 40ft. Seven years after construction began, President Calvin Coolidge pressed a golden lever that parted American flags on both sides of the tunnel at one minute after midnight November 13, 1927, to open the tunnel. In all, 496,500 yd3 of muck were excavated; 129,400 yd3 of concrete was cast; and 3.1 million ceiling tiles and 2.9 million wall tiles were installed.
My grandfather, an immigrant from Trentino in northern Italy, was one of the very brave men who helped build the Holland Tunnel. Very proud of my grandpa and to all who worked so hard to achieve this. If you go to Trentino, they have also built some amazingly engineered tunnels through the Alps. An inspiring generation to be sure.
+Lynn Serafinn my grandfather too, James Vincent Constanza
+Nancy CurlyNoodles How cool, Nancy. Have you made a family tree? I have been constructing one for the past few years and now have mapped out close to 6,000 people, mostly from Bleggio and the surrounding areas.
My great grandfather as well John Burke
Thank You for your grandfathers service in building this tunnel it's a prestigious & valiant effort those brave men did. They should be honored every year for the excellence.
Your surname is the same as my great-uncle's. Here in Brazil it was adapted to the Portuguese language as: Serafim.
Thank you workers for all the hard work you did for us to build such amazing tunnels w/o the use of computers and mostly by hand; amazing.
Truly remarkable!
Just drove through this tunnel for the first time and until then at my 39 year old life I did not even know about it. It is let’s say extremely tight for any tunnel I’ve ever driven through
Clifford M Holland , from my hometown of Somerset,Massachusetts..rest in peace u were one of the greatest engineers to ever live;buried at Palmer street cemetery, Somerset, Mass....
This is remarkable. How did they do this. This is crazy
I was always amazed by what extremes these people have built!A SUPREME shout-out to the bridge -builders,tunnel-diggers and so on!It takes real heart to build stuff like that
50 cents is $7.50 adjusted for inflation. Still a lot cheaper than it is now
Yeah there are too many people going through the tunnels nowadays so they are much more expensive being in higher demand. I’m actually amazed that it is only a little more than twice as expensive as it was in the 30s considering traffic congestione and population growth of today.

I LOVE THE TUUNNEL SO MUCH
Up to 1970, the Holland's tolls were collected at toll booths at the Canal St. entrance/exits. This made for an unsafe traffic situation as many vehicular accidents occurred from cross traffic.
Fascinating
I was driving through this tunnel and an debate came up. I was like there is no way the tunnel is completely underwater and if it is... it couldn't be safe. I guess I was wrong.
Thanks , thumbs up liked. I am still not at all convinced that this shows us "The Building" of the Tunnel. I have already been everywhere including library of Congress and from what i am seeing all we have is a renovation and clean up of the tunnel. Not one image anywhere really showing real construction. ( Like the boatloads of dirt that would need to be disposed of, or those giant tubes b4 they were installed. We did not build the Holland Tunnel, or anything else in NY or anywhere in this country til 1960. Try finding anything concerning even The Empire Stae or Chrysler Buildings. Impossible builds for us to have completed as we are told and NO viable evidence.
Educational

Netherlands is just a true-genius country... A TUNNEL UNDERWATER JUST BUILT IN 1 WEEK.
If only we could go back to living in these days. Everyone looking to just live, help each other out, and not go on social media, race baiting and attacking everyone because of their political affiliation.
But they had their problems in that era as well tho. Like woman didn’t have rights, there was more people than in present I mean I think every new era comes with some type of society issues.

Like woman didn’t have rights, I’m sure there was plenty racism still, there was more people poor than in present I mean I think every new era comes with some type of society issues. Can’t ever live content or free not then either now. Sucks.
