Thanks for the comments everyone! I am reading through all of them and have started tweaking around with OpenXR. Indeed I can get a MUCH better resolution from it!
Now however my fps are down the drain.
Based on your experience, which are the most fps intensive factors from OpenXR. Any "magic" trick to improve performance?

    • @aerofart
      @aerofart 2 роки тому +3

Biggest factor is render resolution in the sim settings. Disable motion reprojection and disable upscaling (FSR/NIS) and most everything else. Keep it basic. I find I get the best performance and quality when all that stuff is disabled. Maybe because I have a 3090, and it can handle acceptable frame rates and quality. My system is CPU limited, so even lowering some of my graphics settings doesn’t help, but only degrades quality with no gain in fps. In conclusion, I suggest you try as I say above. Start simple and tweak one item at a time to gauge what each thing does. As time goes on, you’ll also realize how to wear your headset correctly. There is a very defined sweet spot that you’ll just have to discover as you become familiar with the headset and how it works with your eyes. One thing I would like to try is prescription lenses. I’m far-sighted, so that may also be a factor on how things look in the headset view. I’m not sure. Is your vision 100%?

If you have NV experience installed be sure shadow play isn’t running in the background Also and or
Reinstall your Nvidia drivers using DDU and reinstall without NV experience.

Hi Emmanuel. To try to have the best possible experience in VR is a holistic process that begins with tweaking the OS, setting the OpenXR for WMR correctly, setting up the right configuration on OpenXR Toolkit, and finally MSFS VR settings. This is a time-consuming process as each computer has its own hardware, so you need to find the setup that suits your hardware. Nevertheless, there is some help online you can follow. But, be careful as it is possible that the more you read or listen, the more confused you could be. There are opinions on all kinds of tastes. I can share what did. I'm getting with a 3080 card around 39/40 fps.

@@_flyby exactly. Ask 1,000 people how to optimize or get best settings, you’ll get 1,000 different answers. Ultimately, it is a road you must travel alone IMHO.

As mentioned by other people, get OPenXR toolkit and watch some of the youtubers that has tutorials on setting up the headset with super clarity. I fly the PMDG 737 in VR all the time and it is awesome and everything is clear to read. You will have to make another video with your opinion after you have done a proper setup on VR :)

I’ve had my Reverb G2 for something like two months now. I use OpenXR, RTX 3090 and an Intel 7940x. I get decent fps, and have finally learned how and in which direction to change all my settings to optimize for performance or quality. I keep fiddling, not because I’m not happy, but because VR is so good that I want to be even happier. I can read most everything in my cockpit(s), though some models are better than others, and I’m not sure if it’s because they use 4K or 8k texture but also or if there is something else making one cockpit appear clearer than another. The good news is that some aeroplane models (excluding the HJet) so support right-click VR zoom toggle (different from pop-out panel) so when you need to get close to your panels and instruments, it’s not a problem. Beware that not all models support this function.
In any case, welcome to the wonderful world of VR . . . And be sure to keep your coffee mug as far away from your reach as possible while flying. You can thank me later.

The only setting which affects the clarity is the resolution. I fly exclusively in vr and have no problems with ‘blurriness’ at all, and can easily read the first officer’s displays from the captains seat in the pmdg 737. Have a look at a few UA-cam tutorials and you’ll soon be getting that clarity plus performance which you’re looking for. Good luck and welcome to the vr addicts club!

The first time I took off in VR (in a GA plane) I actually whooped and burst out laughing, it was AMAZING !!! I'm slowly getting my settings sorted out but I do still need to use the VR Zoom function to read things, and I need to work on remembering not to put the VR controller down on the passenger seat when I'm not using it :) The other huge thing about VR, apart from the spatial awareness that makes pattern work and aerobatics and landing and even taildraggers easy mode, is that you suddenly realise how small these cockpits are. On a 2D screen even with head tracking, when you look from one side to the other you're sitting in a room with lots of space around you and the cockpit feels big, then you plug in the headset and you're actually sitting in it and you swear you can feel the shoulder of the guy next to you.

It’s twice as expensive, but the Varjo Aero is amazing. Much better edge to edge clarity than the G2 and better performance. When you use the OpenXR toolkit and dynamic foveated rendering with the Aero, you can get FPS consistently above 45 with very high settings in MSFS and no stutters. No issues seeing the smallest text on cockpit displays or gauges. Granted that’s with a 3090 and 5900X and 64G RAM

Interesting to hear your opinion on VR. I have the same headset. VR changed the flight simulation experience for me. Even after many years a 2D screen made my struggle for my landings to mention one, but in VR the situational awareness is something else and was for a huge help for me to improve my landings especially. I love it - I just hope the performance gets tuned better still.

A fellow C337 enjoyer 😄 I’ve got the Reverb G2 as well with a 3080 (not ti) and have gotten it working with nice clarity and fps using the openxr toolkit. UA-camrs VR flightsim guy and pie in the sky tours had some very helpful videos for setting up the G2 for msfs. I can fly both GA and airliners in VR and easily read both glass and steam instruments.

@Frank Farmer I’m sorry Frank, I really have no idea. It’s the card I have and the only gpu I have tried with the G2. I would certainly think it’s very possible to use with something like a 3060 or 2070/80 but maybe with some lower settings for the in sim VR graphics options.

Check your windows Settings under Headset Display and ensure it is set to Best Quality. I use the Reverb G2 and can easily read all dials on all airliners. It requires some work, but it can be configured to be really good. Not as good as flatscreen but absolutely good enough for us. Your failure to read the gauges is configuration related. Many threads on the forums to help you get setup.

Luckily, there are a lot of tweaks that can be done. I'm not saying that you haven't tried any of those yet, but when I see your specs, combined with what you're experiencing, it leads me to believe that your experience will change dramatically, and quickly. I run a RTX3070 OC with an i7-10700k with 32 gb RAM. Like you, I use the Reverb G2. I run everything on medium to high settings and my FPS never drops below 30. And I can read EVERY dial in every aircraft crystal clear.
    So I'm positive you'll get there👍
Good luck my friend, and thanks for your content 🔥💯

Absolutely! This “Toolkit” makes a world of difference. Adding that to your vr settings in MSFS (there’s a separate settings tab besides the normal), you’ll be able to read those instruments much better. Not perfect, but better. Certain VR settings must be lowered for best results. One is clouds. If you go to Pie in the Sky UA-cam, not only does he have the toolkit setup, he specializes in vr and has it down pat. Finally, yes! VR is unbelievably real. It really does feel like you’re in the ac flying over wherever. Thanks for your take. Well done!

The newer headsets like the Varjo Aero and future Pimax Crystal will totally address the clarity issues you experienced. I upgraded from the HP Reverb G2 to the Varjo Aero and I can tell you it is significantly clearer than my 3440 X 1440 monitor - I could not say this with any previous VR headset. Hopefully future upgrades to the sim (e.g. DLSS) will help with the VR performance issues.

IMHO, VR is good for 2 things in Flight Simulator right now... helicopters and simple VFR aircraft. I've never been a big fan of simulated helicopters in the past; but flying one in VR (I recommend HPG's free H135 or the more impressive payware H145) will blow you away. The feeling of motion seems so realistic that you won't really mind that everything is a little blurrier than normal. Forget about IFR and Air Carriers for now... the technology is just not there yet.

So glad you jumped on VR!
I promise you that you just need to be a bit patient and play with your settings and you will be able to run MSFS in a Fenix 320 or PMDG 737 at full resolution and full clarity and smoothness with the hardware you have. It took me about 2 months to get there :-( but once I did, it was nirvana. I will look you up in discord so I can share my settings. I have similar hardware and could not be happier. BTW the CRJ 1000 runs better in VR than Fenix or PMDG.

What I still haven't figured out is why VR sometimes is abysmally bad in lag and performance when you start up the first session. It's not related to good or bad weather, lots of detailed scenery or AI.
Yes, that also play a part. But I often have to restart my Oculus software and the OpenXR Toolkit multiple times, sitting at the ramp until the sim loads in with smooth performance.
It will get there eventually but you'll never know when. Sometimes it's right of the start sometimes you have to retry it 3 times, sometimes a dozen times.
All the downsides apart, I still think it is, for me at least, the better solution than a homecockpit. Not only requires a homecockpit lots of space and lots of money, both of which I'm short on, but it also limits you to the single airframe you build. You either have a small GA plane like the Cessna 172 or you pick one of the airliners. But that then is the only thing you can realistically simulate in that homecockpit
In VR you have no limits. Helicopter, WW2 Fighter, Jet-Fighter, Airliner, Single-Engine GA, Bizzjet or even cars. The sky is the limit.
I also remember your comments about the difference between flying a 2D Desktop and the real thing, and being a VR only flyer I remained silent, but I felt that you were a little off the mark on the simming experience. I didn't know that you had not yet experienced flying in VR yet.
I have not flown in real life but what I notice imidiately that my flying improved considerably in VR, especially the approach phase in small GA aircraft when you try to find your way into the pattern and then find the right moment to do your base turn and the turn to final while also descending.
This works a hundred times better in VR, because you are able to orient yourself in a 3D space, just like you would in real life. And then I tried the airliner approaches that gave the most grief on a Monitor: The 08 Circle to land at Innsbruck and the 05 Visual approach at Madeira. And while certainly not easy, and you still have to know to correct early in a plane like the A320, it became so much easier to fly those approaches without being glued to the instruments.

Welcome to the VR club! I hope you manage to set up everything in a way that works smooth for you. I still have an old Rift S, and I think it actually helps because the resolution is a lot smaller...it may not be as clear, but at least it's easier to run smooth. I installed the beta for sim update 10 yesterday to see how the upcoming DLSS works, and while it does effect the graphics a bit, it effects the framerate a LOT, and I guess smoothness will always come before clarity in VR.
I tries MSFS in VR on an old system, but I just upgraded my PC and now flying smoothly through the clouds over some of my favourite places on earth in VR was a profound and emotional experience.

Someone brought over an Occulus Quest 2, so I can see how it would work in MSFS and DCS. After installing the software and creating an account, which I was not happy about. The software showed that the device was connected, but it would not connect to any of the sims! Kind of would've been pissed if I purchased it and couldn't get it to run!

20ish years ago I used e-dimensional stereo glasses on a crt monitor 1024x768 resolution. TrackIr had just released. Even had a small back pack device called Aurora interactor for vibration. Used a headset for splitting atc audio from aircraft sounds via speakers. I struggled to keep two extra monitors running with sub 2gig processors. Was running two PC's to assist performance. VR headsets were expensive and only had 640x480 resolutions. Which was a step backwards. I finally got so frustrated with it, I gave up simulation...
A couple of years ago my daughter showed me a vr headset called oculus rift. I thought, this could get me back into the simulation world. I was way behind. I began researching.
Two years ago I set up as big a system as I could. The valve index released just before reverb. I never looked back. I built a sim platform, updated the old precision flight controls to Brunner FFB, added buttkicker to shake the platform. I would consider a motion platform, if priced properly.
Anyway, VR is awesome for flight simulation. Thanks to all that take the time to mentor, research, coach, instruct, such as yourself. VR can be tweaked in sufficiently to suit one's needs.
I try to pass it forward by capturing flights in VR on UA-cam. Nothing fancy, just pure VR flight.

This! I was amazed by how much performance boost I got. It will still struggle, I can’t really fly instruments in VR, but it works great for me in pure visual conditions. Also, the PMDG DC6 is surprisingly great to fly, though borderline on readability

For me VR was/is a total revelation. Yes, for now it may be a bit blurry, you might be able to try a Aero and even find it works consistently on your setup and that will surely remove any doubt? But no matter what, these VR clarity issues will be solved soon, and the positives will surely blow any negatives away.

Last night I had one of those moments you get every now and then in VR. I flew over the mountains, coming from Pahrump heading for Las Vegas as the sun was setting. Skimming over the mountain (mt Charleston, I believe), Las Vegas started to appear in front of me. There's nothing quite like it. It's just amazing! And you do get those kinds of moments often in VR. I then took the Beech 18 for a spin around lake Tahoe, starting from south lake Tahoe.. that's another awesome experience.
As for the framerate, that can be managed with the OpenXR tool. I get really nice framerates with the render scale set to 50%. You can get an incredibly smooth experience with the reprojection on, but then you also start getting the 'jelly' effect, which I dislike, so always have that turned off.
So yes, prepare for a time of tinkering. I can still use some pretty good settingf is MSFS. I have the clouds set to the best setting, as well as the grass, and everything else is pretty much medium/high I ithink (with motion blurr off) and that gives me good ramerates. Especially yesterdat after the update things were stutterfree and smooth :)
OH! One oimportant tip: Take out the glasses insert that's between the gasket and the headset. It'll bring your eyes closer to the lenses, and it'll give you better FOV!
I think VR as it is rught now it's really best for VFR flying, as you don't have to rely on having to read tiny letters on displays the whole. Like you say, flying the spitfire is an amazing experience.
Anyway welcome to VR :) I hope you'll get lots of joy out of it!

I also have a G2. Yesterday I did a flight in the PMDG 737 from Brisbane to Adelaide in Australia, a two plus hour flight. I had no problem seeing all even the smallest text. The difference I believe is the type of computer power available. VR has a huge demand on your computer. Look at the You Tube videos from Pie in the Sky Tours or VR Flightsim Guy, who provide tips for people with a wide range of computing power. ASOBO have some work to do with VR that should provide more improvements for lower end computers. Keep at it. It’s the BEST way to experience MSFS. I am a real world pilot and can vouch for the flight experience.

I have the same i9-9900k processor but with a 2080ti and when I was using the G2 I was running at 100 render resolution in game and 100 in OpenXR. The only thing I lowered to get decent frame rates with the G2 was clouds to medium and shadows, everything else was pretty much on high. Which was enough to be able to read the displays and with perfectly decent frame rates, so you should definitely be able to get decent frame rates with your 3080ti. Something to note, with the G2 I only ever used OpenXR as I read that steam VR gives lower performance, but if you want to fly on VATSIM in VR you need to use SteamVR as you will need to use the OVR toolkit so that you can get the VATSIM window in VR.
That said, I Changed to the Varjo Aero at the start of this year (if you want clarity this headset is absolutely fantastic, it is very expensive though at over 2000 Euros. I can read everything on the flight displays easily, I can even easily read the Co-pilots clock from the captains seat) but considering this headset is running at a much higher resolution than the G2, and I am now using SteamVR the frame rates are not much worse than I had with the G2, so steam VR may not be as bad as some people say.
I've been using VR for racing and flight simming since the first Oculus CV1 and could never go back to flat screens. Good luck in your journey, its definitely not always plain sailing getting things running well in VR but when you do, as you have already seen, it is beyond amazing

Glad to hear you found out what a game changer VR is for flight simulation and I'm looking forward to hear more from you once you've spent a bit more time into looking at various settings etc to have a better experience and as a result, will be able to give a more fair conclusion.
Looking at this clip, it sounded more like it was VR in itself that wasn't good enough. When in fact the problem was caused by you not spending enough time to have things setup correctly. As others already mentioned, there's a ton of good setup tutorials out there that will sort the issues you mentioned. I have thousands of hours myself in various VR headsets, currently using the same headset you got - the HP Reverb G2. I'm using this headset successfully both with the PMDG 737-700 in MSFS as well as other aircraft and I can read things in the cockpit just fine with no issues. Such as the speed and altitude tapes on the PFD you mentioned.
So again, once you have spent some more time learning how to setup VR correctly, you'll have a truly great time I'm sure!

Hi Emmanuel, two tips: 1. Get open XR Toolkit and 2. Go Watch the open XR Toolkit tutorial of Mark’s YT channel “simhanger” and your problems Will be over in 1 hour. I have a similar system as Yours and get top FR and clarity in the Reverb G2. Since 2 weeks I have the Varjo Aero wich makes it even beter but the Reverb G2 is the second best one. As a former Pilot myself I find the VR Cockpits too small but in the Toolkit you can increase the cockpit size (I have set mine at 140% and now I have the right dimensions). Regards, Ben

i have similar hw (10900k@5.1g, 3090, hp g2) and 737 and a320 gauges are clear with good frames with mfs settings at high/ultra. you should add a screen shot of your settings so people can chime in on how to optimize: 1) openxr tools for wmr, 2) mfs vr (not 2d) settings, 3) openxr toolkit settings (if already using), 4) nvdisplay settings. note that the g2 has a small sweet spot and placement of the hmd on your head makes a difference in image quality. since rendering 2 screens, getting around 30fps is considered good and smooth for most people.

No going back to flat screen now, as others have said oxr toolkit is a must have, 100rs in oxr and in game with 80% tk resolution and I'm on a7 3700x cpu and 3070 gpu smooth and very readable at 30fps in the 737 so you'll be able to smash it at 100% across the board if you so wish with your set up.
Have a look at the simhanger vids and pie in the sky, the former very very good.
You may need vr lenses if you have glasses which you commented on. I use vr wave lenses but they took 2 to 3 months to arrive from China.
    Try these for higher fps.
Pc set up, hags n game mode off ?
    Disable wmr mirror.
Clouds kill fps but I have mine on high, cant live with mash potatoe clouds but travelling through misty clouds i lower to medium or even low.
Reset your environment on every flight on in wmr.
Off topic, can we have a video of your fs realistic in vr once you have everything dialed in (suitable settings FOR YOU).

Thanks for your honest opinion. I'd like to jump into VR , but I believe that a "monster" GPU is necessary - Milviz recommends at least 11gb of VRAM to run VR with their C310R - which is an expensive upgrade for me. I am also very near sighted so I would need the prescription lens inserts for the G2 goggles (an additional $150 as well) to be usable for me. I am hoping that in several years the VR technology will improve to allow "out of the box" usability. Heck, I waited over a year to get Starlink internet just to have the bandwidth to run MSFS (so very worth the wait!), so a couple of more years to wait for VR to mature is quite doable.

I am flying for some time now in VR (with G2) and my latest find for clarity blew me away, even the smallest text in the HJet I can read from the initial pilots viewpoint. FWIW here my recommendation. You need OpenXR developer app (from MS Store) and OpenXR Toolkit. Rendering scale in MSFS 100%. For OpenXR Toolkit use FSR or NIS (I use FSR) but, and this is crucial, set it at 100% so no upscaling takes place. It's all about the sharpening here, which I have at 50%. Now with OpenXR dev app the resolution can be chosen, I have it at 70% to get 35 fps, but higher % renderscale is of course better. It is also important to have texture resolution set to Ultra in MSFS.

  • @razghost2
    @razghost2 2 роки тому +1

Haven't tried the toolkit but I am sure you are just experiencing the limitations of the headset. In very basic terms a vr headset is a magnifying glass in front of a screen. This means to get the same clarity as a monitor you need a lot more resolution. With the need for such small high resolution displays being almost non existent outside the vr space development of the display is slow.
Saying that though it has still come leaps and bounds what it used to be. I can see how jumping straight into it now might give you the impression that it could be better but if you tried the oculus's first consumer headset, the cv1, and then the g2 you'll be blown away. Also there is now the issue of trying to run the display, even the latest and greatest PC's struggle to run flight sim at 4k 60fps so with the next gen of VR headsets looking like 8k 75hz, there's going to be no way to drive the to their full potential.

The number 1 reason I have not switched to VR yet is indeed the loss of graphical fidelity in conjunction with worse fps. My second gripe is that I can not see my surroundings (controllers and stuff), which to me is a big downside. I have a reasonable good pc as well (3080, Ryzen 5600), it will be years before I will switch to VR.

Defintely a settings issue. It took me a lot of hours to tweak all settings to get the right balance between performance and clarity. The MSFS Forum has some very usefull guides as well as some other UA-camrs. I fly the 737 in VR without any issue. I can read all instruments ckearly enough. At the same time I get a steady 30fps. I have a Quest 2. A couple of weeks ago I and a friend of mine booked a full flight 737 simulator and I must say that the full motion was awesome and of course all the physical buttons, but graphically and with regards to feel of altitude it couldn’t beat my VR setup at home. Mind that in Sim Update 10 DLSS support will (very likely) be added, which should improve performance and gives some room to bump up the settings.

Interestingly DCS has no problems with the clarity of the cockpit intruments. With my g2 everything is absolutely sharp. It is more of a general msfs problem in VR than a VR problem.
Still you can tweak the settings that its possible to play airliners with resonable framerate but of course more blurry than DCS or Sturmovik in comparison. (I only use a rtx 3070).

I love your vids, but I didn't get the same experience in the PMDG. There has to be something wrong with your setup. I'm on a 5600x and a 3080 and I've got it somewhat maxed out (certain settings like AF) and the only jerkiness I get is with the cockpit itself but only with quick movements (everything outside the 3d cockpit stays smooth, it's weird). Critical parts of the flight like landing and looking in one direction are smooth as hell for me and I can read the FO's screens just fine.

  • @POolBacK
    @POolBacK 2 роки тому

I have an Nvidia 1080, Intel i7-7700k and an Oculus Quest 1, I've been able to enjoy the PMDG 737 in VR without too much problem of readability.
I have played in VR since the beginning of the development kit, the two things settings that increases readability are:
    - The rendered resolution, you want it rendering at 1.2 or something (which means, with your high resolution headset, it will be resource intensive)
    - The anti-aliasing settings. You need to test different anti-aliasing algorithms as they produce different results between flat screen and VR. TAA in VR is often a problem.
To be able to get good performance with this, you unfortunately have to tone down other graphic settings. I think the cloud details is the most important one. The level of detail is also a big one, you might have to make the game look bad at distance to get good enough performance. One thing to understand is that MSFS is by far the most resource intensive VR experience out there, and we'll probably need to wait about a decade to be able to have ultra graphics in current day VR headsets with MSFS, and by then those headsets will also be obsolete.

I too just picked up an HP Reverb G2 in November. I’m running a AMD 5800X3D and a 3080Ti and I agree. I just don’t have enough horsepower to crank enough frames at native resolution of 2160x2160 per eye. Even with DLSS and all the fancy XR toolkit tweaks. I need to find a compromise in quality setting/resolution , or get more horsepower power.

First thing I thought of is you didn't reposition your seat close enough to the panel, since the game doesn't usually put you in the right spot. I am on the Quest 2 with lower res than your headset and I can read things well enough. I don't fly really complex airliners, but if I can't read a button or dial from where I am I generally remember what it says anyway. I am just not interested in playing this on a flat screen.

There is something not right with your setup. I too have the Reverb G2 and I can see everything very clearly. I can easily read the F/O instruments without leaning in or guessing and taxi signs from far away too without issue, and that's even without Open XR or any other tool. The fact that you're having so much trouble reading things is especially strange considering the G2's main selling point is the resolution and clarity, in which it excels. It's not HD or 4k on a screen, but it's the first headset I've had where clarity and resolution aren't an issue at all.
