I really enjoy my 2020 Frontier. Old body style but with the new engine and 9 speed. It’s been completely solid, tows well, and is comfortable. It rides well and has a robust shared platform with the Titan. No start stop, no “modes”, just a good solid truck with an interior that’s super easy to clean when I put it to work. I bought it used for $27k 18 months ago and have put 30k miles on it since. It’s a crew cab long bed 4x4. Completely happy with it.
I really love my 23 pro 4x. I am not sold on these 4 cylinder turbos. Especially on an all new platform. And after hearing of all the software and screen issues on the colorados I’ll glad I stayed with a proven drivetrain.
I literally lease from Nissan and they’re not trying to budge on pricing in the slightest! Mind you I’ve been a loyal customer for 12 years. Trucks are getting 0 deals
2024 frontier…hands down. Simple yet modern and solid drivetrain. All these new trucks are complicated craps and as big as older full-size trucks. It’s crazy that people are paying for this much for these things. Spend a few bucks on bigger tires and small lift. These trucks, like the tacomas operate everywhere in the world in mostly stock form.
Nissan is a dying brand which basically sells rental/fleet cars or to people with bad credit. Infiniti will be first to go but I wonder about Nissan long term.

Honestly while it's not the fanciest if I was just going off of what's the "best buy" I would have to give it to the Frontier. 40k gets you a V6 with 4wd and a rear locker. Midsize trucks are just becoming way to close in price to full size these days to justify the purchase in most situations.
My dad just got the brand new frontier pro4x . I love how the steering feels nice and heavy. And proper v6 with an amazing v6 . It's the best mid size truck out there. Hands down
I wanted a small 4x4 truck with a NA engine as a daily driver and for weekend trails. After looking at all each company had to offer I chose a 2023 Frontier Pro4x with all options besides sunroof and leather. Its a great, old school, uncomplicated little truck. It does everything I want a small truck to do. I could be totally wrong, but I don't see these 4cyl turbo motors holding up long term.
Ranger would be the only exception to this thought for me. Those inline 4’s have had the piss best out on them in the Mustang since 2015 and I don’t think I’ve heard a single negative thing about them.

@@duncdunc76 I honestly would say they're getting waaaaaaay more stress in the Mustang. Dudes have them making over 600+HP, dozens of pounds of boost, and running times similar to PP+ GT's in the 1/4 mile...on bolts ons and stock heads. Those engines have been so abused in both platforms that if they were going to have issues we would have seen them by now.
Turbo engines are used all across the world. My brother is an auto mechanic and the Turbo maintenance is super easy , just remove turdo and reinstall overhauled unit.
@Clockwork0nions those are some good points I suppose, but I'm not sure racing and maximum engine performance translates into engine reliability and overall quality of an engine. Lots of high performance engines out there are known to be unreliable. Not saying this one is unreliable as only tine will tell. I just try and take all the info out there that's been presented and backed up by factual analysis and proof and make an assessment. And is seems to be a pretty well known theory that naturally aspirated engines are more reliable then turbo charged engines. Not saying that turbo engines can't be reliable as they can be. I'm just saying if your a person that needs to buy a vehicle and you need it to last and be very reliable then you might be better served choosing a naturally aspirated engine over a Turbo engine.
$70k for a midsize truck with a pitiful 5' bed is stupid expensive. About $20k above where it should be, especially given the same-as-the-rest powertrain.
36K MSRP for the base SR with no options besides 4x4. You won't be able to find those on the lot nor get off the lot under $40K if you could. I'll take a 30 year mortgage for my new truck please.
My grandma is 75 she drives an 83 F150, 8 ft bed, she bought it off the lot new, drives it everyday, has never hauled anything in the bed.. no scratches in the bed at all (there are a few tiny rust spots in the corners)
Take a lower trim truck and build it to match that truck. Tell me how much it costs in both time and money. Then let's see if it still comes with a valid warranty.
Like the last generation, in my opinion, the Zr2 is still the performance bargain in its class at 48k. Still loving my 19 Zr2 I bought new for 40k. Only issue iv had in 41,000 mi of ownership is a bad shift lever park sensor. I'm tuned and I drive it like a sports car, turns heads everywhere it goes , can go off road all day then hit the interstate or paved windy back road on the way home at 80+mph with similar driving dynamics as an suv. Love it.
I have a 2020 Bison and absolutely love it. The new ones addressed some of the biggest issues that people found as they tried more and more adventurous things and gave a much needed interior update. Unfortunately, the price went pretty nutty, but it is consistent with rate of inflation and still offers more capability than anything else for the same price.
I hope people wise up about prices..... I just bought a new Nissan Frontier Pro-4X a few months ago. $42,300 with all the packages except the sunroof and leather seats. I am very happy. Sold my 2015 Jeep Rubicon Unlimited. I do not go serious rock crawling anymore. I love the comfort and technology and the direct aspirated V6. I thought about the new Tacoma, but am skeptical about the durability of the small engines with turbos (though Toyota will be one company that fixes their problems). The projected price for the one I wanted was stupid, so after driving all of the mid-sized truck, the Frontier was my choice. The Colorado with cruise control as an add-on is funny (you guys crack me up).
I am hopeful that with all of this competition, it keeps prices lower and creates better deals. Once these are seen on lots, there will be no reason to overpay.
A friend of mine buys his vehicles in base configuration. Not that he cannot afford a fully loaded trim but rather he believes the more mechanical and electrical features then the more things that can break. For example he prefers a seat with a mechanical lever than an electrical seat. Personally I like seats with memory positions depending on who is the driver. Watching this video, the level of features, and prices 50-60k makes me think there is an underserved market segment that wants basic 20-30k truck. We need a video that shows the value options for ‘24.
Same here. Tradesman Ram 3500 HO with the AS69RC for work, subaru crosstrek base model with a manual for daily, and a tacoma TRD OR with no extra packages. Keep it simple and keep it reliable.
Just transitioned to a 2024 4runner TRD Off Road Premium from a 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4. My engine failed due to bad lifters at 46000 miles. Loved that truck but no one can trust a Chevy or GMC 5.3 or 6.2L engine. They all have these compromised lifters and GM is just trying to push them past warranty. You should not review a Chevy or GMC truck or SUV unless you point out the lifter problem and state whether it applies to the engine in the truck you are reviewing. My 6.2 L AT4 was fixed under warranty, but with the same defective parts. They only fixed one bank of lifters and I would have to have another failure to get the other side addressed.... and they still use the defective part instead of actually fixing the problem. Several Class Action Lawsuits on this issue. Bought the 4runner for its old school V6, reliability, low tech approach. After the GMC fiasco... I just want a vehicle that can be counted on.
If I was looking for this type of vehicle it would be the Nissan Pro4X with a naturally aspirated V6 over the high strung, complicated, and expensive turbo 4 cylinders.
I just picked up the pro-4x with 6k off msrp. It’s the best value for the money in my opinion. The only other truck I would consider in the list is a Tacoma but not a fan of moving over to v4.
Bought a 2023 Frontier PRO-4X and couldn’t be happier. Crazy how every truck review channel severely overlooks the value and capability the Frontier delivers especially for the price. You can keep the overpriced bricked Chevys, gigantic iPad consoles, and 4 banger turbos.
Gotta agree. I might be looking for a nice 3rd gen used Frontier some day once I'm done with my 2008 Frontier with 416,000 on it. That is as long as it's new drivetrain keeps a good reliability rating. Otherwise I'll just be looking for the newest nice 2nd gen 4x4 crew cab long bed, that is just like my awesome 2008. Nothing beats the 2nd gen Frontier Titan platform for a great functional, reliable, and value oriented truck imo.
Same here. Just can't beat those Nissan V6's that have been around for decades and improved on every year. Plus gas mileage with their 9spd transmissions is just as good the 4 bangers. Only thing I wish the P4X had was a telescoping steering wheel.
I am a fan of turbos... on diesels.😂 I can't stand gas powered unless it's at a V6, V8 or I6. I wouldn't mind a turbo on my current vehicles. They could use some pep and fuel mileage. I just don't agree that Turbos should be expensive anymore. I certainly don't believe in making a Turbo charged, diesel tech infused, gasoline 4 cylinder engine into a replacement for a Super Charged V8 in a full size truck. Be it 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, or 1 ton. No replacement for displacement is a fundamental truth of life and reality.
Maybe younger people need to know that it used to be unheard of to pay full MSRP, so much so that Hank not paying a penny over sticker was a joke on king of the hill. So if the car is marked up, let it rot on the lot until they're happy to give it away. They'll survive.
Geologist here that bought used 2016 Nissan Frontier Pro4x with 8k miles on it in 2017 for $28k. Im frequently offroad but have never found the frontier to be inadequate in any regard. While I'm sure these new off-road trucks are more capable, I find it difficult to justify buying such expensive machines when the older/lesser tech seems to work just fine. MPG is about my only gripe with the old frontier. These do seem like really nice trucks tho. Get ready to scratch the hell out of them if using them for their intended purpose. I mostly use mine in Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and California

the modern idea of 'off roading' seems to require dual lockers, massive tires and lift, full heavy duty sliders and armor. and mostly i think it's about talking points and bragging rights.
I know everyone sleeps on the frontier but honestly it's the best bang for the buck. I love my D40 CC 4x4 Midnight. I purchased it used a few years ago for $28k with 13k miles. It's basic, bare bones and definitely dated but it's handled everything I've thrown at it from getting to dispersed camping spots in the Nevada desert and mountains to moving furniture or construction supplies and towing a Civic back from Nashville for my brother, it handled extremely well even without the extra thrills I don't need. When I was shopping around I tried the Taco, as everyone would, the Frontier and the Ridgeline, the Ridgeline rode extremely nice but didn't "feel" like a truck. When it came down to the used Taco with 66k miles and the Frontier at 13k miles I had to go with the Frontier especially with the $12k price difference. I was lucky to get a 2019 which is the last year for the 4.0L V6 and 5 AT, yes it's extremely dated especially the interior but it's reliable and dependable. I see why they kept it the same for almost 15 years because it just works. As for the domestic models the only one that peaks my interest is the Ranger but I'll wait until the quality is proven. Don't get me wrong I love my Yotas I still have my original 2014 Scion xD and a used 2011 Toyota Venza AWD but when it came down to it I couldn't justify paying the "Toyota Tax", it's a truck not a luxury car.

Roman butchered the discussion over the Mojave. Yes there are some appearance differences between the Mojave and the Rubicon and other trims but there are many substantive differences as well. The Mojave has iron knuckles instead of aluminum knuckles on the other trims. The truck frame is reinforced in multiple areas. These changes are done so it can handle high speed off-roading and mild jumps. In addition it has remote reservoir shocks in front and piggyback shocks in back. This is the most advanced shock system of any Gladiator trim including the Rubicon. It also has the most ground clearance from the factory of any other Gladiator trim as it sits taller. Additional differences, unlike the Rubicon it does not have a front locker or a disconnecting front sway bar. It does have a rear locker and Dana 44 axles.
They’ve said how great the Gladiator was a million times. It’s just dated now and doesn’t get as many clicks. I’m hoping the Ford comes out with a Bronco pick up. It would be great to go topless with some updated tech and something with a bit more power than the pentastar.
As an ex-Soviet family i was quite disappointed he named Buhanka a Russian van instead of Soviet. I am aware that type of ingrained fascism among Russians is nothing they can do about, but it's just disappointing to see with a guy i think is aware of all the atrocities inflicted by Russia and the actual production of the Buhanka not being Russian. It just pains me and have to think back of the 1/3 of the family murdered by Russians and how apparently, their deaths mean nothing to Russians. Mojave is more than a sticker package. Bypass shocks Cast iron knuckles Hydraulic bump stops (unique to Mojave) Sportier steering wheel and seats. Offset wheels Can run rear locker in 4 hi (I’m not sure if that’s a thing on all gladiator’s with rubicon/mojave).
When the TRD Pre Runner comes out, can you do a 2WD Shoot Out?!? Get Canyon Elevation with Auto Locker (since will probably be closer in price than a Colorado WT) and what ever 2WD Ranger will be comparable.
As a Tacoma owner and previous frontier owner, I still think a good older Nissan Frontier with the 4.0 v6 and optional 6 speed manual it’s a solid choice for off-roading, it will last over 300,000 miles you can get them cheap and and it’s way cooler as its not a cookie cutter Tacoma.
NEVER WOULD I THOUGHT A TOYOTA (OUTSIDE THE TOP END LAND CRUISER AND MAYBE TUNDRA) LET ALONE A TACOMA WOULD COST $59-69K. HOW DID THEY GO FROM 25-45K AND JUMP UP TO $70K SEEMINGLY OVERNIGHT. COVID IS OVER, BUT THE SHYT PRICING IS HERE TO STAY UNLESS PEOPLE DEMAND CHANGE.
It's because the high end has become more catered to the people who bolted on 10k of parts right after buying. Base tacoma prices went up 3k from the third gen
i paid right around 50k for my canyon at4 and i dont regret it at all. Love everything about the truck and has been reliable with absolutely no issues for 8000 miles. It may not be the best value, but buy what you can afford and what you like is my motto.
The Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro looks the best overall. The Ford RAPTOR is probably the best performance overall. The Chevrolet Bison is right there, but it is too expensive, and its buggy GM electronics hinder its value. The R1T is still the only EV offering, and it's only one software OTA away from being a monster off-roader. Probably the most intelligent purchase is the Nissan Frontier Pro4X. That truck will likely last forever, offering the best long-term reliability.
I would rather have two trucks for $35k than one truck for $70k no matter how luxurious the truck is or how short life is and how much YOLO is going on. 😃 I always prefer a truck that I can crash/break and just not care because I have the funds to buy another one without financial stress. I can do that with a $35k truck (ie a Frontier SV King cab under MSRP) vs a $70k (with markup) Tacoma Trail Hunter.
Stupid or not I stand by what I said above. 😃 Also, you don’t have to be a brain surgeon or rocket scientist to figure out that a Trail Hunter’s practical price with dealer add ons (including markup, tint, ceramic coating, hood protector film, etc) will be $70k. The Limited is $54k MSRP. The hybrid power train will add about $2-$3k (based on Tundra experience) to the price. The TRD Pro will add at least $3-$5k to that MSRP. I think the Trail Hunter will be more based on my experience of buying ARB bumpers and OME shocks. They aren’t exactly inexpensive. The TH trim will be as rare as white ravens. That alone will cause massive markups and add ons. Based on the experience with Tundra hybrid pricing the hybrid Limited will be at least $56k MSRP, probably more (and yes I adjusted the Tundra hybrid price down because the Tacoma will have smaller battery and motor). A Pro Trim will add at least $5k so it’s about $61k MSRP. Trail Hunter will be above that around $65k. Markups will be $5-$10k on these trims for a long time. None of these numbers are from thin air but looking at the various trim level pricing of the Tundra and adjusting for a slightly smaller and less expensive truck and also keeping the competition pricing Bison/AEV in mind. It’s a guess but an educated guess based on data points and observed behavior of Toyota dealers.
Also, I am NOT COMPARING base model Nissan to top trim Tacoma. I just state that my preference is to own TWO less expensive trucks vs ONE expensive truck. Irrespective of trim.
I really don't think there is a way to claim any of these are better than another. I think it depends too much on what you want to do with it. Dirt roads on weekends with big kids? The Honda is a great choice with the roomy back seat and no 4L. Price conscious? Nissan is looks good. Jeep is more of a lifestyle choice; more offroad than onroad. GM, Ford or Toyota? Pick your poison, hard to argue for or against any of those depending on what you want to do with it. And if people wanna spend $60k on these fancy editions? Go for it, because all that tech filters down to the cheaper ones every generation. Or if it sucks, disappears.
$50K + midsize truck!!? as someone who travels all over the country, including Alaska for work, the proof of GM and Ford's failures are that you see almost no Colorado high-performance pick ups or Rangers, but you can't throw a rock without hitting a Tacoma.
Because they’re cheap and reliable. All depends what you’re looking for. Some people want a truck than can tow 5k lbs up hill at 75mph all day. Some would rather have the Tacoma. It’s like buying a Honda ATV over a Polaris: yeah, the Honda will last longer, but the guy on the Polaris will be done with dinner and 3 beers in by the time the guy on the Honda shows up at camp.
I was a Nissan truck driver for all of the years I have owned trucks… until I bought my first Tacoma in 2019. Nearly 120,000 miles later and I am still pleased with its performance and reliability. Once it gets me to 300,000 miles, only then will I consider replacing it.
Thinking about downsizing from a full size truck….but the mpg and price aren’t that much of a difference to the amount of space I’d be giving up…..so who knows….🤷🏻♂️
Yeah you have to want the smaller truck. I wanted smaller for putting it in my garage. Most of my neighbors have to park their full sizes outside. I know a full size would fit but it is just that much tighter fit.
I think the Mojave Gladiator is the best overlanding trim for the Gladiator. You get the rear locker and the big FOX suspension to soak up loooong hard roads. For a turnkey overlanding truck.. Mojave makes a lot of sense.
I disagree. If you actually put miles on remote roads versus climbing up a trail, Mojave > Rubicon. The extra low gearing is great for crawling but not so much for going distance in 4L. I feel like there's a pretty large divide between the two purposes.
I have a frontier, and I think it’s hilarious how many fronty folks are in the comments giving the ol’girl the thumbs up. If your favorite ice cream is vanilla, go for the frontier. If you like a little bit of spice I would go with a different truck. The frontier is a dinosaur, no joke it feels the same as something from 1998, it has a makeover and a better motor sure, but it’s the same
I think there are some many varieties of trucks ranging from hardcore off-roaders to city pavement vehicles that its not always a fair comparison. I think both GMC/Chevy and Ford will be able to provide more value for the money and cut into the Tacoma market share. The Tacos are cool, but come at a price and the reality is that they are 4 cylinder turbos now just like everyone else.
Frontier, Colorado, canyon, Tacoma.. all better looking than previous generations. And then y he designers at ford got together and said “how do we make the new ranger uglier than the last model?” And thus, we have the new ranger!
One thing to remember, if its an issue for you, only two trucks will have naturally aspirated V6 engines, Jeep Gladiator and Nissan Frontier. The rest of the trucks will come with only turbo charged options.
I want to see you take one of the PreRunner Toyota models on your off-road course. I know it isn't going to go through any of the mud obstacles, but I would like to see how it performs on the other obstacles.

I’m really hoping the Gladiator gets 360 cameras, vented seats, lane centering, and maybe some better trailering technology like the camera integration in the Tacoma. A stronger engine or a 10 speed trans would be great too. Unless Ford decides to make a Bronco pick up.
I like the new midsize GM trucks but they are going to have to work out all the electronic gremlins and prove the 8 speed will now last before I'd consider it.
Is his 19.5 a lifetime average? As a 5.0 owner I don’t think you’ll average more doing the same type of driving if so. I’m at about 18 average in mine with a good bit of everything from city use to towing my car in weekend trips.
You're an anomaly or you drive at a different speed. I get yours has cylinder deactivation and 10 speed, but my 2016 5.0 averaged 14 mpg with the best being 19 on long freeway trips. Check fuelly. 2023 F150 with 5.0 average is 16.6 and 2016 F150 with 5.0 average is 15.9. Colorado average is 19.8.
@@BadBackOz recently I drove from San Angelo TX to Seattle Washington in sport mode (no cylinder deactivation) in 2wd and managed over 20 mpg with much of the trip at 80 mph. Don't know what to tell you, but it definitely gets better mpg than my 2011 3.5l ecoboost standard cab long bed. I only have 5k miles on the 2023, so I don't have a huge amount of mileage on it. Most of my mileage on the truck is highway mileage. Still, it seems to average right about 20 mpg regardless.
@@ALMX5DP I have not done any towing, and I am sure that towing would definitely decrease my mileage. The 10 speed is definitely much better than the 6 speed in many ways (my 2011 has the 6 speed). I didn't expect it to be that much better, but the 10 speed is way better than 6 speed transmission.
@@mpeugeot That's basically what my truck would get on the readout in freeway trips, about 19.5, but it was optimistic by about 1mpg. I'm just saying your comparison isn't valid. For all we know, the Colorado may get 23-24 in same case. I averaged about 16-17 with my Mustang before I moved and now it's usually 20-21.
I dont go off road, so I am planning on getting the 2024 Honda Ridgeline Black Edition. Did a test drive and it drives really nice and the seats are the best in the midsize segment.
There’s a little too much focus on the off-road readiness of these small trucks. Sure they look great with the higher stance and larger tires than previous generations but not everyone is going off road to the point where any of that matters. Even the street oriented trims have larger wheel/tire packages than the older trucks. Imagine the fuel economy they could be getting! The new Colorado/canyon has worse efficiency than the old one. I know it’s more power but it’s just a midsize truck.
I have a 2016 Base Canyon that came with 16 inch rims. I replaced them with the 18 inch rims from the SLT, that are heavier, and my fuel mileage went down by about 2 MPG. I also replaced the stock muffler with a Cherrybomb Vortex and my mileage increased by about 2 MPG so I am back where I started. Once I get an aftermarket air intake to get more air into the motor the fuel mileage should improve. Most of the 4x4s I see are "street only" trucks that people buy because 4x4s are popular/trendy or they are driven by people afraid of driving in snow, rain, etc and think a 4x4 will do most of the work for them. It is still a rubber tire trying to get traction on a slippery surface and requires the driver to adapt to the road conditions.
It’s important to mention right now you can get 15-20% off MSRP on gladiators. I just bought a low mileage 2022 rubicon diesel for 44k. You can get brand new 23 Rubis for 48k. The only trucks comparable to that performance are the raptor and Bison. Even still no way I’ll off-road an IFS over a Dana 44.
Ranger Raptor is such an awesome truck. Too bad Ford tried to gouge above MSRP on it and I went with a Lexus instead for the same price. It's just above and beyond a better looking, inside and out, and better laid out truck than the Tacoma, but no ventilated seats. Also, questionable reliability given everyone I know with a Ford. Chevy/GM is ditching Android auto/apple car play in favor of a subscription based "internal solution". So I don't know how anyone can support that practice.
The cheapest one is the best. I’ll fix what breaks and save thousands off retail. I have a 2008 Colorado, which according to many people is a low quality truck. I’ve maintained it a done some brake jobs…that’s it. Compared to other trucks at the time, this one was far less on cost. It’s hard for me to be convinced about needing to buy an expensive truck. Even if they are ‘more reliable,’ have to pay so much up front is essentially ‘paying it forward’ (which is arguable) to have less issues in the future. We’re talking thousands of dollars. That’s not worth it to me.
Best is relative. Life is short, why drive a cheap vehicle with no extras? Give me a more expensive $50-70k vehicle any day. It's simply more enjoyable to be in if you have to spend a lot of time in it. If you can't afford it, that's one thing, but your just settling at that point.
I priced out a 24 SR5 Tacoma 4x4 and without any options it’s already $42k. I don’t think that’s including the destination fee either. My 2019 Tacoma SR5 optioned nicely was stickered at $32k. What the heck is going on?
It includes the destination fee but zero packages and for years you will not find it anywhere. There will be at least a $3k upgrade package on it. Based on how things went with the Tundra.
You're not touching the new Taco 4x4's for under 50k. The stealerships won't let them off the lots for under that. Most of the lots will have 4x2's in inventory and get just a few 4x4's which they will mark up and sell at just about any price. Taco fans will still snatch them up.

Hauling? Towing? Fuel economy? Off-road? Interior second row comfort? Jeep Gladiator beats Tacoma hands down and it's not even close. How in the world do these reviewers come to these results?
Rob the parts bin, add some stickers charge $10k more! A Maverick sized AWD EV or PHEV would be quite handy. Heck a PHEV Ranger would be nice, but not for our market they say.
@@rowerwet is it hybrid demand over EVs? Or is it just a lack of choices and prices? The technology is available for EVs of all segments and hybrid tech has been around for decades. Perhaps it’s auto manufacturers doing as little as possible and blaming the consumer.
@hayduke4589 it's a lot of things, new supply chains, new technologies, but most of all, price. I drive a hybrid maverick I bought new for less than $30k. There is no other small hybrid truck on the market. There are almost no other small or midsized truck on the market in that price range, and no EV truck under 40k. There could be a resistance to making one that size and price, but I'm sure it's tied to low profits and a fear of undermining demand for larger high profit trucks. Car companies don't stay in business losing money on each vehicle, which is probably why the bolt was killed and is coming back only as a mini SUV, for more money. If Toyota could sell the EPU here for less then 40k, it would dominate, but I bet Toyota doesn't because it would hurt Tacoma sales in their thinking. Things won't change until China has a $30k mini truck in the US. Much like the Japanese invasion in the 70s.
I found it interesting that Andre mentioned that the Frontier had a lack of ground clearance, yet the Trail Boss which comes with a factory 2" lift has the same ground clearance.. I have a 3rd gen frontier, and have a 3" lift and 33's and I have 12"+ of measured clearance at my front skid plate. Pretty decent. I think the only competitor for value is the ZR2 depending on what you want/plan to do. At 52k loaded without the bison/boss packages, you are getting tech loaded/luxurious dual locked, 3" lift and 33s, and wheel travel numbers that rivals bolt on long travel factory which combined would cost 10-15k minimum to add to frontiers/tacomas etc. Best value on paper in my opinion, but they still have so many reliability issues to work out. My 2 cents.
It's probably the best value made size truck but it scares me a little bit that Nissan exited the full size truck market. Makes you wonder what the future is like for the Frontier.
Will probably be downsizing from a tundra to a Tacoma but I’m waiting for the hybrid power train to come later in the year. Looking forward to a smaller truck for daily driving but wondering if it will work as hard as the tundra.
I have both and my tundra is more comfortable, bigger and more spacious, pulls more and is only 3 mpg difference. If it wasn't for the manual trans in my tacoma I would only have the tundra.
The title says, "Best OFF-ROAD Small Truck For 2024". By that definition, alone, there is no question that the straight front and rear Dana 44 axles, front and rear lockers, and sway bar disconnect make the Gladiator Rubicon the hands-down best OFF-ROAD small truck - period. Now, if you start watering that definition down by adding metrics like on-road handling and comfort, electric geewiz gadgets, creature comforts, yada, yada, yada, then yes, there are better choices. This is confirming my decision to pursue a Ranger FX4 with the 2.7 Ecoboost. I'd love the Raptor, but I need the bigger towing more than I need the super off-road capability. Thanks for the help. I really enjoy my 2020 Frontier. Old body style but with the new engine and 9 speed. It’s been completely solid, tows well, and is comfortable. It rides well and has a robust shared platform with the Titan. No start stop, no “modes”, just a good solid truck with an interior that’s super easy to clean when I put it to work. I bought it used for $27k 18 months ago and have put 30k miles on it since. It’s a crew cab long bed 4x4. Completely happy with it.

I really love my 23 pro 4x. I am not sold on these 4 cylinder turbos. Especially on an all new platform. And after hearing of all the software and screen issues on the colorados I’ll glad I stayed with a proven drivetrain.
You can actually get a Pro4x for under MSRP. Solid v6, 9 speed trans and just the right amount of tech. This truck for me is what a truck should be‼️

2024 frontier…hands down. Simple yet modern and solid drivetrain. All these new trucks are complicated craps and as big as older full-size trucks. It’s crazy that people are paying for this much for these things. Spend a few bucks on bigger tires and small lift. These trucks, like the tacomas operate everywhere in the world in mostly stock form.
Nissan is a dying brand which basically sells rental/fleet cars or to people with bad credit. Infiniti will be first to go but I wonder about Nissan long term.

Honestly while it's not the fanciest if I was just going off of what's the "best buy" I would have to give it to the Frontier. 40k gets you a V6 with 4wd and a rear locker. Midsize trucks are just becoming way to close in price to full size these days to justify the purchase in most situations.
My dad just got the brand new frontier pro4x . I love how the steering feels nice and heavy. And proper v6 with an amazing v6 . It's the best mid size truck out there. Hands down
I wanted a small 4x4 truck with a NA engine as a daily driver and for weekend trails. After looking at all each company had to offer I chose a 2023 Frontier Pro4x with all options besides sunroof and leather. Its a great, old school, uncomplicated little truck. It does everything I want a small truck to do. I could be totally wrong, but I don't see these 4cyl turbo motors holding up long term.
Ranger would be the only exception to this thought for me. Those inline 4’s have had the piss best out on them in the Mustang since 2015 and I don’t think I’ve heard a single negative thing about them.

I honestly would say they're getting waaaaaaay more stress in the Mustang. Dudes have them making over 600+HP, dozens of pounds of boost, and running times similar to PP+ GT's in the 1/4 mile...on bolts ons and stock heads.
Those engines have been so abused in both platforms that if they were going to have issues we would have seen them by now.
Turbo engines are used all across the world. My brother is an auto mechanic and the Turbo maintenance is super easy , just remove turdo and reinstall overhauled unit.
@Clockwork0nions those are some good points I suppose, but I'm not sure racing and maximum engine performance translates into engine reliability and overall quality of an engine. Lots of high performance engines out there are known to be unreliable. Not saying this one is unreliable as only tine will tell. I just try and take all the info out there that's been presented and backed up by factual analysis and proof and make an assessment. And is seems to be a pretty well known theory that naturally aspirated engines are more reliable then turbo charged engines. Not saying that turbo engines can't be reliable as they can be. I'm just saying if your a person that needs to buy a vehicle and you need it to last and be very reliable then you might be better served choosing a naturally aspirated engine over a Turbo engine.

My grandma is 75 she drives an 83 F150, 8 ft bed, she bought it off the lot new, drives it everyday, has never hauled anything in the bed.. no scratches in the bed at all (there are a few tiny rust spots in the corners)
Take a lower trim truck and build it to match that truck. Tell me how much it costs in both time and money. Then let's see if it still comes with a valid warranty.
Like the last generation, in my opinion, the Zr2 is still the performance bargain in its class at 48k.
Still loving my 19 Zr2 I bought new for 40k. Only issue iv had in 41,000 mi of ownership is a bad shift lever park sensor. I'm tuned and I drive it like a sports car, turns heads everywhere it goes , can go off road all day then hit the interstate or paved windy back road on the way home at 80+mph with similar driving dynamics as an suv. Love it.
I have a 2020 Bison and absolutely love it. The new ones addressed some of the biggest issues that people found as they tried more and more adventurous things and gave a much needed interior update. Unfortunately, the price went pretty nutty, but it is consistent with rate of inflation and still offers more capability than anything else for the same price.
I hope people wise up about prices..... I just bought a new Nissan Frontier Pro-4X a few months ago. $42,300 with all the packages except the sunroof and leather seats. I am very happy. Sold my 2015 Jeep Rubicon Unlimited. I do not go serious rock crawling anymore. I love the comfort and technology and the direct aspirated V6. I thought about the new Tacoma, but am skeptical about the durability of the small engines with turbos (though Toyota will be one company that fixes their problems). The projected price for the one I wanted was stupid, so after driving all of the mid-sized truck, the Frontier was my choice. The Colorado with cruise control as an add-on is funny (you guys crack me up).
I am hopeful that with all of this competition, it keeps prices lower and creates better deals. Once these are seen on lots, there will be no reason to overpay.
A friend of mine buys his vehicles in base configuration. Not that he cannot afford a fully loaded trim but rather he believes the more mechanical and electrical features then the more things that can break. For example he prefers a seat with a mechanical lever than an electrical seat. Personally I like seats with memory positions depending on who is the driver. Watching this video, the level of features, and prices 50-60k makes me think there is an underserved market segment that wants basic 20-30k truck.
We need a video that shows the value options for ‘24.

Same here. Tradesman Ram 3500 HO with the AS69RC for work, subaru crosstrek base model with a manual for daily, and a tacoma TRD OR with no extra packages. Keep it simple and keep it reliable.
Just transitioned to a 2024 4runner TRD Off Road Premium from a 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4. My engine failed due to bad lifters at 46000 miles. Loved that truck but no one can trust a Chevy or GMC 5.3 or 6.2L engine. They all have these compromised lifters and GM is just trying to push them past warranty. You should not review a Chevy or GMC truck or SUV unless you point out the lifter problem and state whether it applies to the engine in the truck you are reviewing. My 6.2 L AT4 was fixed under warranty, but with the same defective parts. They only fixed one bank of lifters and I would have to have another failure to get the other side addressed.... and they still use the defective part instead of actually fixing the problem. Several Class Action Lawsuits on this issue. Bought the 4runner for its old school V6, reliability, low tech approach. After the GMC fiasco... I just want a vehicle that can be counted on.
Toyota is the way to go. If you want reliability. And still good off-road performance. Best resale value.
If I was looking for this type of vehicle it would be the Nissan Pro4X with a naturally aspirated V6 over the high strung, complicated, and expensive turbo 4 cylinders.
Don’t get the “high-strung.” The turbo 4s make considerably more torque at a much lower rpm than the v6s.
I just picked up the pro-4x with 6k off msrp. It’s the best value for the money in my opinion. The only other truck I would consider in the list is a Tacoma but not a fan of moving over to v4.

Bought a 2023 Frontier PRO-4X and couldn’t be happier. Crazy how every truck review channel severely overlooks the value and capability the Frontier delivers especially for the price. You can keep the overpriced bricked Chevys, gigantic iPad consoles, and 4 banger turbos.

Gotta agree. I might be looking for a nice 3rd gen used Frontier some day once I'm done with my 2008 Frontier with 416,000 on it. That is as long as it's new drivetrain keeps a good reliability rating. Otherwise I'll just be looking for the newest nice 2nd gen 4x4 crew cab long bed, that is just like my awesome 2008. Nothing beats the 2nd gen Frontier Titan platform for a great functional, reliable, and value oriented truck imo.

Same here. Just can't beat those Nissan V6's that have been around for decades and improved on every year. Plus gas mileage with their 9spd transmissions is just as good the 4 bangers. Only thing I wish the P4X had was a telescoping steering wheel.
I am a fan of turbos... on diesels.😂 I can't stand gas powered unless it's at a V6, V8 or I6. I wouldn't mind a turbo on my current vehicles. They could use some pep and fuel mileage. I just don't agree that Turbos should be expensive anymore. I certainly don't believe in making a Turbo charged, diesel tech infused, gasoline 4 cylinder engine into a replacement for a Super Charged V8 in a full size truck. Be it 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, or 1 ton. No replacement for displacement is a fundamental truth of life and reality.
Maybe younger people need to know that it used to be unheard of to pay full MSRP, so much so that Hank not paying a penny over sticker was a joke on king of the hill. So if the car is marked up, let it rot on the lot until they're happy to give it away. They'll survive.

Geologist here that bought used 2016 Nissan Frontier Pro4x with 8k miles on it in 2017 for $28k. Im frequently offroad but have never found the frontier to be inadequate in any regard. While I'm sure these new off-road trucks are more capable, I find it difficult to justify buying such expensive machines when the older/lesser tech seems to work just fine. MPG is about my only gripe with the old frontier. These do seem like really nice trucks tho. Get ready to scratch the hell out of them if using them for their intended purpose. I mostly use mine in Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and California

the modern idea of 'off roading' seems to require dual lockers, massive tires and lift, full heavy duty sliders and armor. and mostly i think it's about talking points and bragging rights.
I know everyone sleeps on the frontier but honestly it's the best bang for the buck.
I love my D40 CC 4x4 Midnight. I purchased it used a few years ago for $28k with 13k miles.
It's basic, bare bones and definitely dated but it's handled everything I've thrown at it from getting to dispersed camping spots in the Nevada desert and mountains to moving furniture or construction supplies and towing a Civic back from Nashville for my brother, it handled extremely well even without the extra thrills I don't need.
When I was shopping around I tried the Taco, as everyone would, the Frontier and the Ridgeline, the Ridgeline rode extremely nice but didn't "feel" like a truck.
When it came down to the used Taco with 66k miles and the Frontier at 13k miles I had to go with the Frontier especially with the $12k price difference.
I was lucky to get a 2019 which is the last year for the 4.0L V6 and 5 AT, yes it's extremely dated especially the interior but it's reliable and dependable. I see why they kept it the same for almost 15 years because it just works. As for the domestic models the only one that peaks my interest is the Ranger but I'll wait until the quality is proven.
Don't get me wrong I love my Yotas I still have my original 2014 Scion xD and a used 2011 Toyota Venza AWD but when it came down to it I couldn't justify paying the "Toyota Tax", it's a truck not a luxury car.

Roman butchered the discussion over the Mojave. Yes there are some appearance differences between the Mojave and the Rubicon and other trims but there are many substantive differences as well.
The Mojave has iron knuckles instead of aluminum knuckles on the other trims. The truck frame is reinforced in multiple areas. These changes are done so it can handle high speed off-roading and mild jumps. In addition it has remote reservoir shocks in front and piggyback shocks in back. This is the most advanced shock system of any Gladiator trim including the Rubicon. It also has the most ground clearance from the factory of any other Gladiator trim as it sits taller.
Additional differences, unlike the Rubicon it does not have a front locker or a disconnecting front sway bar. It does have a rear locker and Dana 44 axles.

As a Tacoma owner and previous frontier owner, I still think a good older Nissan Frontier with the 4.0 v6 and optional 6 speed manual it’s a solid choice for off-roading, it will last over 300,000 miles you can get them cheap and and it’s way cooler as its not a cookie cutter Tacoma.
Being less common does not make something cooler. The E-stang is a good example of this.

i paid right around 50k for my canyon at4 and i dont regret it at all. Love everything about the truck and has been reliable with absolutely no issues for 8000 miles. It may not be the best value, but buy what you can afford and what you like is my motto.

The Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro looks the best overall. The Ford RAPTOR is probably the best performance overall. The Chevrolet Bison is right there, but it is too expensive, and its buggy GM electronics hinder its value. The R1T is still the only EV offering, and it's only one software OTA away from being a monster off-roader. Probably the most intelligent purchase is the Nissan Frontier Pro4X. That truck will likely last forever, offering the best long-term reliability.

I would rather have two trucks for $35k than one truck for $70k no matter how luxurious the truck is or how short life is and how much YOLO is going on. 😃 I always prefer a truck that I can crash/break and just not care because I have the funds to buy another one without financial stress. I can do that with a $35k truck (ie a Frontier SV King cab under MSRP) vs a $70k (with markup) Tacoma Trail Hunter.
Price isn't released yet and comparing a top trim tacoma to a near base model nissan in price is stupid.
Stupid or not I stand by what I said above. 😃 Also, you don’t have to be a brain surgeon or rocket scientist to figure out that a Trail Hunter’s practical price with dealer add ons (including markup, tint, ceramic coating, hood protector film, etc) will be $70k. The Limited is $54k MSRP. The hybrid power train will add about $2-$3k (based on Tundra experience) to the price. The TRD Pro will add at least $3-$5k to that MSRP. I think the Trail Hunter will be more based on my experience of buying ARB bumpers and OME shocks. They aren’t exactly inexpensive. The TH trim will be as rare as white ravens. That alone will cause massive markups and add ons. Based on the experience with Tundra hybrid pricing the hybrid Limited will be at least $56k MSRP, probably more (and yes I adjusted the Tundra hybrid price down because the Tacoma will have smaller battery and motor). A Pro Trim will add at least $5k so it’s about $61k MSRP. Trail Hunter will be above that around $65k. Markups will be $5-$10k on these trims for a long time. None of these numbers are from thin air but looking at the various trim level pricing of the Tundra and adjusting for a slightly smaller and less expensive truck and also keeping the competition pricing Bison/AEV in mind. It’s a guess but an educated guess based on data points and observed behavior of Toyota dealers.
Also, I am NOT COMPARING base model Nissan to top trim Tacoma. I just state that my preference is to own TWO less expensive trucks vs ONE expensive truck. Irrespective of trim.

I really don't think there is a way to claim any of these are better than another. I think it depends too much on what you want to do with it. Dirt roads on weekends with big kids? The Honda is a great choice with the roomy back seat and no 4L. Price conscious? Nissan is looks good. Jeep is more of a lifestyle choice; more offroad than onroad. GM, Ford or Toyota? $50K + midsize truck!!? as someone who travels all over the country, including Alaska for work, the proof of GM and Ford's failures are that you see almost no Colorado high-performance pick ups or Rangers, but you can't throw a rock without hitting a Tacoma.
Because they’re cheap and reliable. All depends what you’re looking for. Some people want a truck than can tow 5k lbs up hill at 75mph all day. Some would rather have the Tacoma. It’s like buying a Honda ATV over a Polaris: yeah, the Honda will last longer, but the guy on the Polaris will be done with dinner and 3 beers in by the time the guy on the Honda shows up at camp.
I was a Nissan truck driver for all of the years I have owned trucks… until I bought my first Tacoma in 2019. Nearly 120,000 miles later and I am still pleased with its performance and reliability. Once it gets me to 300,000 miles, only then will I consider replacing it.

Yeah you have to want the smaller truck. I wanted smaller for putting it in my garage. Most of my neighbors have to park their full sizes outside. I know a full size would fit but it is just that much tighter fit.

I think the Mojave Gladiator is the best overlanding trim for the Gladiator. You get the rear locker and the big FOX suspension to soak up loooong hard roads. For a turnkey overlanding truck.. Mojave makes a lot of sense.
Except that’s not how overlanding is… front locker, better articulation, and better gearing for the extra weight are far more important.
I went with a diesel rubicon, I feel it’s the best package with a small lift and 37s

I disagree. If you actually put miles on remote roads versus climbing up a trail, Mojave > Rubicon. The extra low gearing is great for crawling but not so much for going distance in 4L. I feel like there's a pretty large divide between the two purposes.

I have a frontier, and I think it’s hilarious how many fronty folks are in the comments giving the ol’girl the thumbs up. If your favorite ice cream is vanilla, go for the frontier. If you like a little bit of spice I would go with a different truck. The frontier is a dinosaur, no joke it feels the same as something from 1998, it has a makeover and a better motor sure, but it’s the same

I think there are some many varieties of trucks ranging from hardcore off-roaders to city pavement vehicles that its not always a fair comparison. I think both GMC/Chevy and Ford will be able to provide more value for the money and cut into the Tacoma market share. The Tacos are cool, but come at a price and the reality is that they are 4 cylinder turbos now just like everyone else.
2024 Gladiator Willys now has rear lockers for better off-road performance for less than a Rubicon. I didn't see that on older Willys.
Frontier, Colorado, canyon, Tacoma.. all better looking than previous generations. And then y he designers at ford got together and said “how do we make the new ranger uglier than the last model?” And thus, we have the new ranger!
2024 Nissan Frontier for me. I got an SV because off-roading isn't something I'm going to do enough to warrant the extra $3-4k.

Turbo on any truck sucks for longevity. Naturally aspirated only without turbos.
One thing to remember, if its an issue for you, only two trucks will have naturally aspirated V6 engines, Jeep Gladiator and Nissan Frontier. The rest of the trucks will come with only turbo charged options.

I want to see you take one of the PreRunner Toyota models on your off-road course. I know it isn't going to go through any of the mud obstacles, but I would like to see how it performs on the other obstacles.
Diesel ZR2 Colorado is still a great contender against these newer gen trucks (even the new ZR2).

I’m really hoping the Gladiator gets 360 cameras, vented seats, lane centering, and maybe some better trailering technology like the camera integration in the Tacoma. A stronger engine or a 10 speed trans would be great too.

I like the new midsize GM trucks but they are going to have to work out all the electronic gremlins and prove the 8 speed will now last before I'd consider it.

lol, 19.5 mpg in a mid-size truck (Andre's Colorado), my 2023 F-150 5.0 XL 4x4 gets over 20 mpg (and even has cruise control).
Is his 19.5 a lifetime average? As a 5.0 owner I don’t think you’ll average more doing the same type of driving if so. I’m at about 18 average in mine with a good bit of everything from city use to towing my car in weekend trips.
You're an anomaly or you drive at a different speed. I get yours has cylinder deactivation and 10 speed, but my 2016 5.0 averaged 14 mpg with the best being 19 on long freeway trips.
Check fuelly. 2023 F150 with 5.0 average is 16.6 and 2016 F150 with 5.0 average is 15.9.
Colorado average is 19.8.
@@BadBackOz recently I drove from San Angelo TX to Seattle Washington in sport mode (no cylinder deactivation) in 2wd and managed over 20 mpg with much of the trip at 80 mph. Don't know what to tell you, but it definitely gets better mpg than my 2011 3.5l ecoboost standard cab long bed. I only have 5k miles on the 2023, so I don't have a huge amount of mileage on it. Most of my mileage on the truck is highway mileage. Still, it seems to average right about 20 mpg regardless.
@@ALMX5DP I have not done any towing, and I am sure that towing would definitely decrease my mileage. The 10 speed is definitely much better than the 6 speed in many ways (my 2011 has the 6 speed). I didn't expect it to be that much better, but the 10 speed is way better than 6 speed transmission.
@@mpeugeot That's basically what my truck would get on the readout in freeway trips, about 19.5, but it was optimistic by about 1mpg. I'm just saying your comparison isn't valid. For all we know, the Colorado may get 23-24 in same case.
I averaged about 16-17 with my Mustang before I moved and now it's usually 20-21.
Gladiator is still number 1 for offroad.

The TRD Off-road and the TRD Sport Tacoma are also available with the Hybrid Max engine.
I prefer the Frontier V6, but second is the ZR2 Colorado or GMC Canyon.
I dont go off road, so I am planning on getting the 2024 Honda Ridgeline Black Edition. Did a test drive and it drives really nice and the seats are the best in the midsize segment.

The key asset on the ZR22 is the front & rear locking diff. Only the gladiator has that.
There’s a little too much focus on the off-road readiness of these small trucks. Sure they look great with the higher stance and larger tires than previous generations but not everyone is going off road to the point where any of that matters. Even the street oriented trims have larger wheel/tire packages than the older trucks. Imagine the fuel economy they could be getting! The new Colorado/canyon has worse efficiency than the old one. I know it’s more power but it’s just a midsize truck.
I have a 2016 Base Canyon that came with 16 inch rims. I replaced them with the 18 inch rims from the SLT, that are heavier, and my fuel mileage went down by about 2 MPG. I also replaced the stock muffler with a Cherrybomb Vortex and my mileage increased by about 2 MPG so I am back where I started. Once I get an aftermarket air intake to get more air into the motor the fuel mileage should improve. Most of the 4x4s I see are "street only" trucks that people buy because 4x4s are popular/trendy or they are driven by people afraid of driving in snow, rain, etc and think a 4x4 will do most of the work for them. It is still a rubber tire trying to get traction on a slippery surface and requires the driver to adapt to the road conditions.

It’s important to mention right now you can get 15-20% off MSRP on gladiators. I just bought a low mileage 2022 rubicon diesel for 44k. You can get brand new 23 Rubis for 48k. The only trucks comparable to that performance are the raptor and Bison. Even still no way I’ll off-road an IFS over a Dana 44.
But then you're stuck with a jeep. Notorious pieces of shit.
Ranger Raptor is such an awesome truck. Too bad Ford tried to gouge above MSRP on it and I went with a Lexus instead for the same price. It's just above and beyond a better looking, inside and out, and better laid out truck than the Tacoma, but no ventilated seats. Also, questionable reliability given everyone I know with a Ford.
Chevy/GM is ditching Android auto/apple car play in favor of a subscription based "internal solution". So I don't know how anyone can support that practice.
The cheapest one is the best. I’ll fix what breaks and save thousands off retail. I have a 2008 Colorado, which according to many people is a low quality truck. I’ve maintained it a done some brake jobs…that’s it. Compared to other trucks at the time, this one was far less on cost. It’s hard for me to be convinced about needing to buy an expensive truck. Even if they are ‘more reliable,’ have to pay so much up front is essentially ‘paying it forward’ (which is arguable) to have less issues in the future. We’re talking thousands of dollars. That’s not worth it to me.
Best is relative. Life is short, why drive a cheap vehicle with no extras? Give me a more expensive $50-70k vehicle any day. It's simply more enjoyable to be in if you have to spend a lot of time in it. If you can't afford it, that's one thing, but your just settling at that point.
Want Gladiator…will not buy with current engine option. Diesel would have been great, too bad my timing is terrible.

I priced out a 24 SR5 Tacoma 4x4 and without any options it’s already $42k. I don’t think that’s including the destination fee either. My 2019 Tacoma SR5 optioned nicely was stickered at $32k. What the heck is going on?
It includes the destination fee but zero packages and for years you will not find it anywhere. There will be at least a $3k upgrade package on it. Based on how things went with the Tundra.
You're not touching the new Taco 4x4's for under 50k. The stealerships won't let them off the lots for under that. Most of the lots will have 4x2's in inventory and get just a few 4x4's which they will mark up and sell at just about any price. Taco fans will still snatch them up.

Hauling? Towing? Fuel economy? Off-road? Interior second row comfort? Jeep Gladiator beats Tacoma hands down and it's not even close. How in the world do these reviewers come to these results?

@@rowerwet is it hybrid demand over EVs? Or is it just a lack of choices and prices? The technology is available for EVs of all segments and hybrid tech has been around for decades. Perhaps it’s auto manufacturers doing as little as possible and blaming the consumer.
@hayduke4589 it's a lot of things, new supply chains, new technologies, but most of all, price. I drive a hybrid maverick I bought new for less than $30k. There is no other small hybrid truck on the market. There are almost no other small or midsized truck on the market in that price range, and no EV truck under 40k.
There could be a resistance to making one that size and price, but I'm sure it's tied to low profits and a fear of undermining demand for larger high profit trucks. Car companies don't stay in business losing money on each vehicle, which is probably why the bolt was killed and is coming back only as a mini SUV, for more money.
If Toyota could sell the EPU here for less then 40k, it would dominate, but I bet Toyota doesn't because it would hurt Tacoma sales in their thinking.
Things won't change until China has a $30k mini truck in the US. Much like the Japanese invasion in the 70s.
I found it interesting that Andre mentioned that the Frontier had a lack of ground clearance, yet the Trail Boss which comes with a factory 2" lift has the same ground clearance.. I have a 3rd gen frontier, and have a 3" lift and 33's and I have 12"+ of measured clearance at my front skid plate. Pretty decent. I think the only competitor for value is the ZR2 depending on what you want/plan to do. At 52k loaded without the bison/boss packages, you are getting tech loaded/luxurious dual locked, 3" lift and 33s, and wheel travel numbers that rivals bolt on long travel factory which combined would cost 10-15k minimum to add to frontiers/tacomas etc. Best value on paper in my opinion, but they still have so many reliability issues to work out. My 2 cents.
Like how the Nissan just got into the game with a decent looking rig, just to be left behind in 2024.
It's probably the best value made size truck but it scares me a little bit that Nissan exited the full size truck market. Makes you wonder what the future is like for the Frontier.
Will probably be downsizing from a tundra to a Tacoma but I’m waiting for the hybrid power train to come later in the year. Looking forward to a smaller truck for daily driving but wondering if it will work as hard as the tundra.
I have both and my tundra is more comfortable, bigger and more spacious, pulls more and is only 3 mpg difference. If it wasn't for the manual trans in my tacoma I would only have the tundra.
It's weird that no manufacturer other than GM will put 35" tires on a midsize truck...
The lack of a 4auto option on the Tacoma TRD off-road is disappointing.

The title says, "Best OFF-ROAD Small Truck For 2024". By that definition, alone, there is no question that the straight front and rear Dana 44 axles, front and rear lockers, and sway bar disconnect make the Gladiator Rubicon the hands-down best OFF-ROAD small truck - period. Now, if you start watering that definition down by adding metrics like on-road handling and comfort, electric geewiz gadgets, creature comforts, yada, yada, yada, then yes, there are better choices.
