When Sara Bareilles signed up to write the music and lyrics for the Broadway musical Waitress in 2013, she had no idea it would change her life. The show - which tells the story of a pregnant, pie-baking waitress - became a smash hit, it saw Bareilles nominated for both Tony and Grammy awards. I too loved this performance, & had not heard of Shoshana Bean.
This song is so emotional for me. The "she" she's referring to is the younger version of herself. In the musical, the main character is a pregnant waitress who's trying to escape her abusive husband and this number comes near the end of the show. It always makes me cry no matter who sings it.
Shoshanna emotes so beautifully in EVERY song that she sings. This one give me chills every time.
Sara Barielles wrote this particular song for the Broadway play, “Waitress”, however, Shoshana does write her own music. “All To Me” is an original of hers that is amazing. Well worth the listen. Also, like others have mentioned, “Make It Rain” is and ABSOLUTE must!!!

Love this! Whether or not you react to it (ha, tho I'm subscribing in hopes that you might!) you HAVE to check our her singing "Make it Rain" at the Ace Hotel. It starts slow and soulful and then by the end she is literally possessed...one of the wildest live performances I've ever seen, & I can tell from this reaction that you'd appreciate it! :) Her original music is incredible as well!

In this song Shoshana shows her exceptional talent, both in voice and emotional story telling. I have watched this over and over and never grow tired of it. The other performance that you MUST see is Make It Rain, live at the Ace Hotel, backed by orchestra. It is breathtaking. I absolutely promise you will love it. It is more bluesy.
Shoshana has also been Elphaba in Wicked. You definitely need to react to her Defying Gravity. Her voice is like no other.

MrLboyd, first time reactor; thank you for your heart-felt reaction! Yes, excellent performance by Shoshana, very intense, powerful emotions! She had some pitch and tone issues with her vocals, voice cracked a couple of times, and she is a bit too 'theatrical'; just use strong, powerful vocals and the emotional message hits like a sledgehammer! That being said, the best version of this, by far, is Lucy Thomas putting out an absolute masterpiece! She takes the word, 'empathy', to a whole new level! Within the first 10 seconds of her performance, Lucy steps right into this waitress, faults and all, and we feel what she feels........her vocals accentuate these lyrics perfectly, just a beautiful vibrato to bring out those lyrics and the intense tone she sings at.........just incredible!
She is amazing! I do have to say that my favorite renedention is by Alison Luff. Alison really gets into the character and her emotion is unbelievable . Check it out and see what you think?

If you thought this was good then you NEED to react to her duet with Avery Wilson. They cover “Saving All My Love For You” and it is impeccable! She also does a duet of “How Come You Don’t Call Me Anymore” with Deandre Brackensick that is incredible!
Jordin Sparks has the best version of this, imo. It's not OTT theatrical. But the song makes more sense and hits harder in the Context of the show.
