The new for 2019 RL Winston PURE is a light tackle trout rod that won best Freshwater Rod at the IFTD summit. It comes in weights 2-5 and is a dream to cast. In this video we review and cast several rods in the Winston PURE series.
I had the opportunity to cast the 8' 4wt Pure at the Winston Factory, and all I can say is WOW!!! It was simply a magical rod, and I have owned 5 Winston's in my lifetime, as well as having cast many others. It is by far in the conversation as one of the finest rods I have ever cast. I cast it after casting the same models Air, and the other person there testing rods had the same reaction as me, without me telling him what I thought. The Air was very good, but once I cast the Pure I couldn't put it down. It's without a doubt the next rod I will save up for.
Awesome. I feel the same way. I got the 9' 4 weight as I'm on a wide river a lot. Great feedback.
Just bit the bullet today and picked up a Pure 8' 4wt. Beautiful rod, can't wait to try it out on the water
Showing off his ambidextrous casting skills…😉 Nice casting, Joe.
The Pure series is an awesome lineup. I have the 7’6” 3wt & 8’4” 4wt and all I can say is WOW. A correction is required - the Pure series does not utilize the super silica resin; only the Air & Air Salt do. Nevertheless these rods have outstanding performance.
Thank you, great correction and that is appreciated. I'm glad you really like these rods, I have been fishing the AIR Salt rods a lot, love 'em.
The # 4 8.6..... How does it handle wind... And would you call the action medium or medium fast / fast?...
Saab Van Der Linden I’m not sure how the 8’6” 4wt handles wind as I have the 8’ but this particular series is not designed to handle any wind beyond a mild breeze. For that they are fine. Anything north of 15mph will limit their performance.
Joe - Have you fished the Pure 476 or 480 and if so, how do you compare each of them regarding casting range up to 35' for smaller streams? Thanks for all you do to put out great content!
Pure orAir 2 for 9’ 5 weight? Awesome reviews. Very helpful 👍
hi, may i ask is pure lighter in weight than an air2? does pure has a slimmer, shorter grip than an air2? i m asking about this because i had a decade-old fast-action 5wt sage z-axis with a “lady’s grip”. i realized this smaller 6.75 inches grip fits me like a glove. i m torn between a pure and an air2. but i think i should get pure for its slower action so that i can own both a fast action z-axis and a slower action pure. by owning 2 different action types of rod, i can experience for myself which rod action will suit me better... thank you for putting up this informative video. joseph @ singapore
I think the AIR 2 is a bit lighter in hand, but snappy action due to the different materials. The grip on the PURE is 6" of cork, the AIR 2 is 6.5" of cork. We have both in stock, hope this helps!
Lovely rod and I wish I could afford the price tag....but I enjoy staying married! On the lower price alternatives would the Redington Hydrogen be anywhere close? I cast the Hydrogen and I really liked the precision on shorter casts as it loaded really well but it's not a distance rocket.
I would say the Redington CRUX is a good choice in the lesser price range. Very nice rod. Enter promo code UA-cam and you'll get 10% off! www.redsflyfishing.com/Redington-CRUX-Fly-Rod-p/redington-crux-1-mp.htm
Hey it’s always nice to dream right?? That’s what calls me back out there every time.... but, instead of a little Winston with a retirees price tag I’ll be the guy toting the 6’6” Powell sweet P glass rod.... even at 125$ it’s a professional piece of glass that’s very pretty as well
Great review and very helpful thank you. Although I’m sure you mean it’s for the ‘discerning’ angler and not the ‘discriminating’ angler. Very different things. 🙈
Ok, yes, the discerning angler. Discriminating anglers are jerks.
Do you have a line recommendation for the Winston Pure 8' 4wt, combined with a Hardy Ultralite FWDD 4wt reel?
Considering the SA Amplitude Trout Smooth, and Rio Perception, thoughts?
I would definitely go with the SA Trout Smooth or the RIO Technical Trout InTouch. Here is a link to the SA line, if you haven't already used it try promo code UA-cam at checkout for 10% off. redsflyfishing.com/products/scientific-anglers-amplitude-smooth-trout-blue-bamboo-horizon?_pos=1&_sid=9b890b321&_ss=r
What rod do u prefer the winston pure 9' 4 or Sage trout LL 9' 4 / 9' 5
I knew this was coming... I wouldn't be able to choose from a performance standpoint. They are very similar in action, the Sage LL feels a bit lighter as far as mass weight but I've fished that PURE pretty hard for over a year with no breakage, no complaints, and it's been a great companion. I think its a brand loyalty decision.
@@redsflyshop Thank you very much for the fast answer :)
damn now I still have to make that tough decision...
👍👍
Winston Pure or Scott G Series if, only if u must pick one 905 rod, for dryies , nymphs, and somtimes smaler streamers?
PURE all day long! Use promo code SALINE and we'll gift you a Scientific Angler's Amplitude Smooth Infinity! www.redsflyfishing.com/Winston-PURE-Single-Hand-Fly-Rod-p/winston-pure-flyrod-mp.htm
Are they lighter than the darts?
That's a great question, the DART is a bit different rod because they don't make it in the longer lengths. The 2 Weight is right in line with the DART rod. Very similar actually. It becomes a Ford vs. Chevy decision at that point. We can give you a free Scientific Anglers fly line with the Winston, enter promo code "SALINE" and we'll match it up with the Amplitude Smooth Infinity fly line.
Did you catch a fish in this place? You never show or It never happen?
Luiz Gustavo Padilha I think what reds fly shop is suggesting the ability of each rod and the way it might load and unload.... but I could be wrong
@@chrisbajema8002 Yeah that is the main purpose in all videos he Record in his backyard. But lets assume he catch one, why not to show?
I catch fish almost everyday haha, how about tomorrow I put one on video for you. I need to test some new fly lines. I'll even mention this comment in the video so stay tuned!
Hehe live it and love it!! I look forward to anything you can say and show us. You do have man hands... but I’ll bet it’s from fish teeth and not construction 😆🤭
Looking forward Joe. Say hello to our Brazilian Fly Fishing Association ABPM.
I'm sure theses rods cast nice. All the technical mumbo jumbo (nano resin for lunch anyone?) written in press releases and catalog is typical for describing rods the past 15 years. Why not say it's for small streams, fishing for trouts with dry flies up to size 10, etc.?
There is no scientific (?) research that big guides is better for casting long distances. Some say smaller guides is better because the line will dangle less (drag) when passing through the guides.
I also see a trend of rod companies using less quality hardware (Chinese hardware rather than US made) and cork (pre formed rather than sanding from hand glued cork rings, mediocre cork with lots of fillings as well as bleaching to obscure dark cork blemishes ) yet asking higher prices. Not good...
There is a new iRod out everyday and ifly line.
I totally agree. My favorite rods are the old sage rpl’s and the old loomis g3 style stuff. I’ve even got a favorite steelie rod in the old ma sage series 7wr with fighting butt🤷♂️👌
When you say expensive, how much?
$850, so its actually not at the top of the heap price wise. I suppose my point is that it should be an excellent rod at that price so it's not surprising. It still exceeded my personal expectations. Especially for the light touch casts, mending, line feeding, and tactical moves.
Ok thanks for the swift reply. One more question if you don’t mind. So, how do you feel that this relates to the Winston Air as a dry fly rod? That one is even more expensive. I put one of those in my hands the other day and said “ this is the one” but then watched your video on the pure and they are 100 bucks cheaper.
Don't worry about the $100 haha. Fly rods are FOREVER. If that's the "one", do it. Use the promo code UA-cam here and you'll get 10% off your first order, OR use promo code SALINE and we'll throw in a $100 line. Your choice, our way of saying thanks for supporting our channel! Here is a link to the AIR - www.redsflyfishing.com/RL-Winston-AIR-Rods-p/winston-air-fly-rods.htm
Vs the air?
The AIR is a faster action, so if you were looking for a rod to handle some increased distance with wind resistant or weighted flies then it would possibly be a better choice. This is a light tackle rod, but short of handling a big #4 type stonefly nymph or a big conehead sculpin the 5 weight is appropriate for all trout situations in the lower 48.
Awesome man ! Do a review on the air.
Oh I will for sure, I do have a review of the AIR Salt which I really really like. I sort of ignored the AIR when it first came out but they got my attention with that Salt version. I really need to get the AIR out for a few days of serious fishing.
