Railfanning the Blue Ridge Mountains: Roanoke, N&W's Legacy, and Harper's Ferry

  • It’s February 14, 2024 and I’m starting the day in Christiansburg, VA, in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. I check out the old Norfolk & Western Vickers coaling tower and catch an ethanol with CN power on the ex-Virginian. After a stop in Roanoke with SD40s and the FRA train, we find some N&W Position light signals at Cloverdale before making a beeline for Harper’s Ferry, WV. Here we see X415, running late and with extra power after a derailment in the area, as well as I136 and Amtrak 29.

Have now watched the whole video -- as usual, very enjoyable. I think the Norfolk & Western's position lights signals, like the Tuscan red livery of its passenger cars, date back to its being controlled by the Pennsylvania Railroad before the big mergers in the 1960s.

There used to be a horseshoe loop of track that crossed over the N&W main at right angles at Vickers, so coal cars could dump directly into that coaling tower. Quite a structure--quite a railroad!

A great finish to a great series Harrison! My compliments, you've done very well indeed!
Now isn't that Vickers coal tower something? I've heard those old concrete coal towers referred to as "American Pyramids" since they were built for the ages. Some were so solidly built it wasn't worth the trouble to know them down. There were exceptions of course, when we moved to the Richmond area in 1987 there was a coal tower still standing in the old C&O, now CSX Fulton Yard south and east of Richmond. Sadly it disappeared sometime in the 1990s, one day it was there and then it was gone.
Those position light signals on the Norfolk-Southern are a legacy of when the N&W was owned by the Pennsylvania RR. Mybe you know this already but for those who don't they worked like this:
A light signal like this, I , straight up-and-down corresponded to a green signal.
If it looked like this, /, an angle, it corresponded to a yellow.
Like this, ----, horizontal, it corresponded to a red.
Glad to see you had such a great adventure and I'm looking forward to your Virginia Transportation Museum video, I haven't been out that way since 1992. AND I see you got to meet our "Mighty 611," the undisputed "Queen of Steam!"
    Thanks for posting!

Have enjoyed watching about 12 minutes of this so far. Didn't see a caption for the second train at the former coaling tower at Vicers, with a long string of just one type or possibly two of NS covered hoppers. If they were loaded, what might they have been carrying?
