Goodbye Renaissance: A Last Look at Canada's British Railcars on VIA's Corridor

  • I'm in St Lambert, QC to ride one of the last VIA Rail Canada "Corridor" trains to use the Renaissance cars. Via's Renaissance fleet was built for an overnight rail service in the UK and France, but the service failed and the cars were sold to Canada. Now these unique cars are nearing retirement from corridor service, remaining only on the Montreal-Halifax Ocean.
    After riding train 28 to St Hyacinthe, I catch CN train 400 before Via 29, with a Siemens "New Fleet" train, takes me back to St Lambert.
    St Lambert to St Hyacinthe, QC.
    Thanks for watching! If you haven't already, please subscribe and hit the bell to stay up to date on my new adventures.

    Those little mountains exist because they are harder than granite and the last ice age really wasn’t successful in flattening them

    British Rail Mark 4 carriages were first produced in Britain in 1989, which makes the VIA Renaissance cars more modern than Amtrak Superliner II and Amfleet cars. The 2+1 seating is not even found on Amtrak's Business Class cars. However, they are less than 9 feet wide, not much bigger across than most Light Rail trains. I can see why VIA would only use them on their less busy corridor routes.

    it is kinda sad, but at the same time, they've been 20 years without a refurb...and it shows

    Looked like it was a fun trip. I would prefer to ride in the Canadian. Nothing beats the famous Budd stainless steel cars though. Good video

    Thank you for that. My only Renaissance ride came not too long after they entered service on the overnight "Enterprise" between Toronto and Montreal. The Nightstock, as was the original branding, was a poor fit for North American service but when they became surplus the deal seemed too good for Via to let slip. They would spend almost as much modifying them for service in Canada as the purchase price. They were meant to be a stopgap measure and they've made it 20+ years. Not bad for a temporary solution.

      and because of crashworthiness issues they still had to have buffer cars

    Siemens Venture cars are on the property in California, but unfortunately for me, they are all going to NorCal to free up California cars for use in SoCal. The NorCal and SoCal systems only connect via Amtrak's Coast Starlight, which is Superliner.

    About those loaded autoracks: most new cars originate at various North American car plants and move east to Joffre and Moncton. Some new cars also get unloaded from ships at Dartmouth, NS and move westward to North American destinations. Most of them would be on 305 (Moncton - Toronto, typically seen early morning on the St-Hyacinthe sub, mid-morning on the Kingston sub), but since 305 bypasses Taschereau yard, Montreal-bound cars are switched to 401 at Joffre.

    Thanks for bringing us along Harrison! Not knowing anything about the Renaissance cars I Googled them, specifically to find out why they were being retired, I mean the things look almost brand new. Then I saw they're mostly not compliant with the Canadians With Disabilities Act so I guess that's the main reason? Apparantly some were modified but are still considerd the least compliant cars in VIA's fleet. It's a shame I guess, they're good-looking cars!

      Eventually even the remaining LRC sets will be replaced as the new fleet trains continue to be delivered.

    The Renaissance cars really aren't that old compared to other VIA equipment. The LRC cars are even older than the Renaissance cars. The Budd cars are 60 or more years old.

    Nice catches there man, unfortunate to see those train sets being retired. They look great so I have to wonder why they’re taking them out of service

    • @jy6283
      @jy6283 Місяць тому +2

      Same consist, except for the locomotive, two F40 was assign that day.

    What I notice is that PSR is apparently happening in Canada, too.

    • @NorthCountryTrains
      @NorthCountryTrains  Місяць тому

      E. Hunter Harrison pioneered PSR, and he led both CP and CN. Therefore… PSR is big in Canada

      @@NorthCountryTrains - Speaking as a civil engineer, I think that combining cars without regard to their length and weight into extraordinarily long trains entails unacceptable risks. BNSF used to run 125 car Intermodal hotshots back and forth with almost uniform consists and loco distribution on the ex-ATSF Southern Transcon. Now they hook anything up to COFC cars and still run them at Intermodal train speeds. The ghosts of the San Bernardino Runaway--1989, 6 killed. including 2 residents, and 2 injured--have been forgotten.

    I think maybe these Renaissance cars could supplant anything Amtrak
    I mean; you saw those Amtrak trainsets simply rusting to the rails outside Philly
    My tax dollars would at least be able to take a breath…….

      They are still used on the Ocean, but their days in corridor service are likely over.
