This video is coming in very handy too me right now ... Doing a rebuild on my 2000 f350 that made it through 333k really hard construction and heavy tow miles ... Put a used reman 7.3 with 40k miles on it for a temp engine.. and might run it a couple more years .. but going to put the original back into top shape and have it ready ... I love these engines when they work right... 👍
If one of my kids ever gets to rebuild an engine, I will have them watch this video as a training tool. Your commentary is right on and comming from you it will be better than if I did it. Kids don't take my word as they should in my opinion. Having third party source of information builds a level of trust that I can not instill in what I say. Sometimes I get to the point that I won't even try to get them to do anything like this. It's easier if I do it myself without asking them. They are in their twenties now. I figure, by the time they turn 30, they will get to do this kind of work and I be sitting by watching them struggle. Like Mark Twain once said: when he was 18 years old, he thought his father was an idiot. By the time he reached 25, he thought his father was smartest man be ever met.
Um when I get ready to put the cam shaft back in the engine block I take the block off the engine stand and set it down on wooden blocks on the back side of the engine block so I can lower the cam shaft straight down into the engine block . There's less chance of damaging a cam bearing and it's quiet a bit simpler going in.I use my over head crane to lower the cam shaft in so I don't chance it slipping out of my hands and damaging a bearing.
You know what's funny.... I smell the oil, assembly lube, diesel fuel, and a hint of PB Blaster, watching these videos. Yet I am sitting across the house, far from the garage, and have no grease on my clothes whatsoever. Havent done any mechanickin all day. Ain't that sumething. LOL...
Love your videos, very educational! I have a 99 7.3 powerstroke I want to rebuild. The motor was ran hot? What are some things I should check to see if motor is worth Rebuilding? TIA
If it isn’t locked up it’s worth rebuilding, also if it isn’t locked up it probably doesn’t even need a rebuild, these engines can take a lot of abuse, even an overheating cycle.
I haven't started my 7.3 rebuild yet (cause the machine shop has had it for the past going on three months) Im just curious about the torque wrench and how to get the right one without spending to much. Thanks in advance.
I got a question for you. I have a 94 F350 that has a 7.3l I am taking out. What size bolt did you use to attach it to your engine stand. I keep finding it is 7/16-14x4. I never had a ford so it will be a new task ahead for this project.
I trust your years of experience. but I was taught in shop class to use short 6 point sockets whenever possible. Also, when using a torque wrench, you cannot have anything touching the socket or any part of the torque wrench in front of the "click" point. Crescent wrenches are for home owners and hacks.
Absolutely love your videos....your very knowledgeable highly detailed. Explain everything in detail......keep up the great work and keep them videos going!!!! Top notch my friend.
I’m building one now and the new mahle lifters have one oil hole on one side , which way should the hole be facing ? Oil to piston or oil to intake valley? Thanks
Generally speaking I agree about welding the gear but you can weld them, Ford Taurus SHO engines had issues with the cam gear spinning (not keyed) on the cam and the repair was to weld the gear.
To each his own and I’ve definitely used it before, it really used to be the industry standard, beside STP oil treatment but I’ve always believed using libriplate or any grease to pre-lube bearings is just introducing sludge into a brand new engine. Perhaps it melts and blends with the engine oil better than I’ve been led to believe but I always use an oil based assembly lube like Torqo, Lucas or Permatex. I also think you run the risk of plugging off oil holes with globs of grease and possibly risk damaging brand new components at a critical time. Just my 2 cents worth, been building engines of different kinds almost 20 years now and knock on wood I’ve had good luck. I’m curious what your thoughts are Warren? What do you think about my “methods” so to speak?
So during my rebuild, I took off the low pressure oil pump, and took off the inner and outer gerotors, took motor apart and laid the crank on my bench. Crank did not fall or get hit. Going back together when it was time to put pump back in I ordered the Melling pump. Received new pump and soaked in oil. Went to install and the inner gerotor will not slip on, just for fun tried to install old inner gerotor and it also won’t slip on. When I initially took off the old gerotor it would slip on and off easily. Is it safe to “tap” the new inner gerotor on, or should it slip on and off easily. If it should slip on and off easily then what happened from the time I took off the old lpop and tried to install the new one? Lost on this one...help please!!
I can guarantee you that the machine shop did not lube the cam when they install it. They probably lined up the holes but because they didn't lube it or just the used motor oil to lube it, the oil ran out and the cam grabbed the bearings and spun them
Ahh I feel like I've landed in good hands.....thank you for these videos! And err.... is it just me or does it seem all tools are about a buck or a buck fifty these days! 🤣
+Michael Allman No that's not a dumb question. Install them dry. You only want assembly lube on the i.d. of the bearing where the cam journals ride, but nothing on the o.d. of the bearing.
Haralabos Lukatos You probably just got a bad Injection pump, those old 7.3 engines ran forever. Unplug your glow plug controller and squirt either in the intake, if it starts on either then there is a fuel problem.
I am not mechanic but that i am thinking too fuel problem. For you know some thinks about my truck. I buy that truck used. I know is needed glow plugs. Is was little harder to start in colder days. warmer days started ok. i used to drive but one day after work i start the engine idle ok. But when i press the gas pedal cut the engine off. Is stick shift i take home but i have to restart 20 times. One mechanic tell me two pistons is bad i not know how check that and if is truth. the same mechanic when i buy the truck is have fix fuel leak. And because have missing the air hose the original is install one square hose. Now other mechanic tell me that hose probably damage the pistons because the engine not pull the air need. other i know the people i buy the truck used starting fluid
Haralabos Lukatos your motor is f... if starting fluid was used on it a lot . The original owners of my 6.9 did the same thing . Everyone of my pistons are done for. Burning a lot of oil . Do not use starting fluid it is the worst thing you could do to them. If the motor doesn't spin fast enough when you go to start it it will ignite early. Use gas on a rag in front of the filter . I have been told that is one of the better ways to start the truck.
Just a bit of useless information. The notches in the cam bushings are for alignment. Manufacturers bushing installers have a dimple that the notch goes over. The sleeve extends through the bushing and has a groove in it. You drop a pin through the oil galley that falls into the groove. Start the bushing in the bore and remove the pin. When the bushing is installed to the correct depth by bottoming the tool the hole will be lined up. Fool proof oil hole alignment. Maybe machine shop should be using this setup. Thanks for a great video.
Dear Mr. Grease, maybe one could devise a "pusher" device that would bolt to the block and "push" the cam bearings in instead of hammering. Such as the opposite of the gear removable tool. Host a thought ? Sincerely, Kathleen.
Kathleen NAWALT Well great minds think alike, earlier this year I was driving some cam bushings in a N-14 Cummins that were tight and I was thinking it would be alot easier to press these in.
+grease monkey101 Say there . . . Mr. Grease, My Guy says thanks for the complement. He says "next time" I'll make that tool. Just next time there just isn't enough time. Sure would be nice to have though. Sincerely, Kathleen & Me.
And on more thing I’ve noticed in your videos you have a laptop for specs.. is there a certain program for specs on a wide variety of trucks and equipment? Thankyou
What are those coolant collars called that sit in the block and fit in the head? I have had my engine back together for a year and it runs fine but I swear those were not in the block when it came back from the machine shop. For the life of me I can’t remember if I put them back on or not.
I'd love to know of someone in my area that would take the time to do nice work like you did in the video. You hear the bad experiences people go through and makes it difficult to trust someone to work on your truck. You wouldn't happen to be in Texas would you??
What's a fair price to charge to do that full job of rebuilding it and installing the engine all the way to start it. Please let me know as soon as you have a chance. I would really appreciate it 👍. A family member of mine brought me all the stuff new I think his diesel mechanic moved it or something. Lol
western truck and tractor repair ok cause i had the pump on the bench and a ball bearing fell on the floor and i wasnt sure if it was already on the bench or part of the oil pump
western truck and tractor repair if i turn the engine over by hand will it pump oil and create oil pressure so i can see if i have any oil leaks before i put the engine back in
good job i definately enjoyed the video i had a 99 powerstroke and i loved that thing i think they get a bad rap i would love to have one again i had very good luck with it and it was very reliable for me
+3408kid Thanks, Yeah there are alot of these things still going down the road, mainly because most guys don't want one with all the emissions crap on them.
+Sideshow Bob Yeah, I would just keep running them too, I work on alot of new equipment and vehicles and there is way too much electronics and emissions crap on them.
Great video. Wonder if he used a $$$$$ International Harvester Navistar $$$$$ bering kit or a cheap Chinese $50 one from ebay??????? Great video though!
Dont ever put the piston cooler nozzles in befor the pistons i have seen tons of engine damage caused by that people hit the nozzles with the big end of the rod when they install the pistons its worth the extra 10 minutes to fight with the nozzles after the pistons are in its just one of those things you may get away with 100 times but it only takes 1
Sad these trucks are basically obsolete. Looks like electric is going to win out. Supposedly light-duty trucks won't have diesels after 25. Supposedly only Ag and transportation will have diesel.

Great video Warren doing some catching up on old videos.

Jeez...those "Clicks" at the 33 minute mark are so satisfying.
Great video, can you please tell me what online workshop manual are you using
You dont need to clearance the bearings ???????
Awesome video thank for posting this!!! I got a 99 F250 with 135K miles on her and hope it's a very long time before I see this in person 😀
Jons Air Cond Thanks for watching.Yeah hope you don't have to do that for awhile, it's expensive.
ALWAYS, watch your vids. Thanks for making these!
With this detail video you gave me the confidence to do it myself Excellent Video Thanks Bro !!!!!
have you completed the rebuild of the 7.3
What did the machine work cost?
great job. love how you are such a perfectionist. thanks for sharing
Oren C Thanks for watching Oren.

I used the bell housing bolts
@@westerntruckandtractorrepa1353 are they long enough? I am putting it on 2000# Pittsburgh engine mount?
Don't you need to clearance those main bearings ??????????
Did you plastigage rod and main bearings thanks
I trust your years of experience. but I was taught in shop class to use short 6 point sockets whenever possible. Great breakdown on this. It's nice and slow and easy to follow. Thanks. BTW you could have a second career singing 🎤 for a Primus cover band.
Bird dog Attebery Thanks for watching, and you don't want to hear me sing.
All I hear is Les talking now, lol
Awsome job This is an awesome video I am also wondering which service manual you use
Awesome! Love the channel. Two thumbs up for you.
I’m building one now and the new mahle lifters have one oil hole on one side , which way should the hole be facing ? Oil to piston or oil to intake valley? Thanks
Are the main bolts reusable like the older 7.3’s? I’m fixing to do a rebuild on one of these myself and I’m curious if I can use the same main bolts.
No need to check bearing clearance?

Hey love these powerstroke videos, very helpful. I'm curious where you got your digital copy of the service manual from? Thanks for the help!
Daniel Gaskill I bought them from my dealer, they are about 300 bucks per disc.
grease monkey101 I was hoping you were going to say eBay haha. I have the paper shop manuals and saw the digital versions on eBay

where do you get your computer program that has the manufacture instuctions? im having a hell of a time finding one.
You definitely need a go pro camera that you can wear or easily mount so you have both hands free to be able to work.
Did the cam bearings come in that overhaul kit?
I can guarantee you that the machine shop did not lube the cam when they install it. They probably lined up the holes but because they didn't lube it or just the used motor oil to lube it, the oil ran out and the cam grabbed the bearings and spun them
Is there a ring or gasket on the piston jets?
Thanks. What does a job like this cost out the door? U do really nice work.
Michael Allman Parts and labor on this one was almost 11,000, that was machine shop work too. We put some performance stuff in which cost a bit more.
Excellent video mate. Well done.

Hey bud, sorry if this is a dumb question. Do u use assembly lube on the cam bearings or bang em in dry?

Or are these oil passages? Top left and top right looking from side of bank
John Bias Not sure what you're talking about.
are you talking about the dowels that your put the head on? they stick out of the block maybe a 1/2 inch?
John deere 5020 in the backround?

Is there a ball bearing associated with the oil pump
ReactedGoose Gaming No , just internal and external gear and pump housing.
western truck and tractor repair ok cause i had the pump on the bench and a ball bearing fell on the floor and i wasnt sure if it was already on the bench or part of the oil pump
western truck and tractor repair does the pump need to be primed and if so how
ReactedGoose Gaming No , just get your gears wet with clean engine oil and then install, they are self priming.
western truck and tractor repair if i turn the engine over by hand will it pump oil and create oil pressure so i can see if i have any oil leaks before i put the engine back in
Where is that online service manual you were looking at? Do you know of a good paper one or do you prefer online?
+John Bias Those are CD ROM discs I bought from Ford. You can download them from a website called EPC.CATALOGS alot cheaper.
Thanks A lot !!
Where did you get your freeze plugs kit? I am having a hell of a time getting freeze plugs everyone always sends all the wrong sizes
+Patrick Quest When I took the block and heads to the machine shop they found and replaced all the plugs.
grease monkey101 lucky you thanks!
good job i definately enjoyed the video i had a 99 powerstroke and i loved that thing i think they get a bad rap i would love to have one again i had very good luck with it and it was very reliable for me
+3408kid Thanks, Yeah there are alot of these things still going down the road, mainly because most guys don't want one with all the emissions crap on them.
i have a 90 idi and a 2002 powerstroke, both are great and reliable. and i dont have to worry about emssions and def
+Sideshow Bob Yeah, I would just keep running them too, I work on alot of new equipment and vehicles and there is way too much electronics and emissions crap on them.
where are you I need to repair a 7.3 year 2000
Not the best quality not the best angles but definitely works
Thank man enjoyed the video.
Awesome video thanks
Man you don't want to use that oven for food use after letting that oil roast in there......
Patrick TheBaptist Yeah, my wife was surprised I could figure out how to turn it on. lol!
Hahahaha
Great video. Wonder if he used a $$$$$ International Harvester Navistar $$$$$ bering kit or a cheap Chinese $50 one from ebay??????? Great video though!
who did you get the rebuild kit through
Joshua Rice KT performance.
Awesome thank you
Joshua Rice No problem.
what did the machine shop do for you on the block
+Joshua Rice Honed, redecked, .
What’s the part number for cam bearing installer?
+Casey Tom W89220 summit racing
What is that in the back ground? 850 John Deere! "Popping Johnny"!!
5010
Why didn't the machine shop pay for that engine that got toasted when they installed the cam bearings wrong?
+Joel Watkins Because they knew I was just starting out on my own and didn't have the money to fight them.
I bet you didn't go back to that machine shop again!
Put the came berings in freezer before installing thy will go in like a glove you will way less your hammer
would that cam gear puller work on a n-14 cam gear
+Will Smithey No, I tried that a year ago., It took heat and 50 ton press to get it off.
I did one last week ended up have to buy a new gear put to much heat on it thanks a lot though
+Will Smithey Yeah, don't feel bad, I have broke them in half on the press, it happens.
I wish I could be your neighbor lol
thank you
No problem.
Sad these trucks are basically obsolete. Looks like electric is going to win out. Supposedly light-duty trucks won't have diesels after 25. Supposedly only Ag and transportation will have diesel.
Where did you buy the gasket set from?
Patrick Cuillier KT performance
thanks I have a 2001 7.3 I'm putting back together. Your videos are very informative thanks for taking the time.
Patrick Cuillier no problem
@30:53 that's not in any service manual... YAIKS!
I would have home rebuild my dam engine
What?
I believe he meant to say, “I would have homie rebuild my damn engine.” I know it’s an old comment but I was just rewatching the old 7.3 and 6.0 videos.
I will ship it to you pls let me know I need my truck
