I love this song, but i think "Rent" is the best song in Rent. To be fair though, there isn't a bad song in the whole play. I've seen it twice now, once by the students at Interlochen and just recently attended the 20 year Anniversary tour and can't wait to see it again
"I don't own emotion, I rent." My favorite line in the whole show. :3 And this number holds a special place in my heart. When I was in RENT, the entire cast who was not on stage at the time had a HUGE dance party during this song.
Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal will always be my favorite Mark and Roger but I prefer this performance of the song to the original. I think Adam and Will's voices compliment each other's just a bit better and I really like Will's voice in general. I love their acting here too.
I like the Mark in this. He probably is again my second favorite. Nobody can be Mark like Anthony Rapp. He Originated the role and- He does it the best. Adam comes in second
I'm gonna be honest, this is the best cast ever assembled for Rent! Adam and Will are practically the perfect Mark and Roger! Will has that rockstar like sound whenever he sings and Adam has that nerdy filmmaker sound that reminded me so much of Anthony Rapp! These guys sound awesome together!
I love bennys change of heart, he went from being an arse to being a decent enough guy, he paid for angels funeral, he offered to pay for mimi's rehab/treatment
I was lucky enough to watch this cast perform. I love this song so much. And what made my showing extra special was that Will Chase signed my Playbill!
The belgian production in 2015 had the most amazing Roger I've ever heard. He is dutch and also played in Tanz der Vampiren (his name is Milan van Waardenburg). He will (by voice) always be my favorite roger!
Carter Teasley the UK's 20th anniversary tour...the Roger was incredible, he really embodied Adam Pascal and also brought his own twist to the character 💛
Wait so are you saying you like will chase, I’m a little confused lol, I’m in love will chases voice, he’s the best roger with Aaron tveit right beside him in my opinion. His voice is so musical theater and I love that
[Mark] Don't breathe too deep Don't think all day Dive into work Drive the other way That drip of hurt That pint of shame Goes away Just play the game You're living in America At the end of the millenium You're living in America Leave your conscience at the tone And when you're living in America At the end of the millenium You're what you own [Roger] The filmmaker cannot see [Mark] And the songwriter cannot hear [Roger] Yet I see Mimi everywhere [Mark] Angel's voice is in my ear [Roger] Just tighten those shoulders [Mark] Just clench your jaw til you frown [Roger] Just don't let go [Both] Or you may drown You're living in America At the end of the millenium You're living in America Where it's like the Twilight Zone And when you're living in America At the end of the millenium You're what you own So I own not a notion I escape and ape content I don't own emotion- I rent [Mark] What was it about that night? Came here immediately after watching the Rent live version; Rent is my favorite musical of all time, and has been since my first viewing. I was still a pretty sheltered, conservative Christian, albeit with many gay friends, at the time, and I watched this version on youtube (I believe the whole video's still up). As soon as it started I was taken aback by how incredible it was, and after the opening number I could tell this would be one of my faves. After the film ended, I immediately listened to the OBC recording, found as many clips as possible, listened to the movie recording, and then rewatched this version, then headed off to school (I had stayed up all night). This musical has literally changed my life, and this is my favorite song from it simply because of this performance. So I haven't gotten a chance to watch the whole Rent Live performance, but I wanted to watch this song and see if it lived up at all. And I'm not excited. Everything about this song that I adore is gone from that performance, although I can see Jordan Fisher as an acceptable Mark. It's so sad that they couldn't just do Rent the way it's intended, as a messy, collaborative experiment with Broadway people, not pop singers.
will chase is a great singer, so is aaron tveit, and i assume the roger i see on the anniversary tour this year also will be. but for me no one can beat adam pascal. i can hear other marks but especially for this song no one will ever top adam
yeah. I saw him. haha. After I left that comment 3 months ago, I went to New York and saw both Rent and Avenue Q. He was indeed playing Princeton and Rod and he did a great job. It was kinda funny seeing him in that after Rent.
I’m going to see Rent in February and this is my favorite song from the musical. I’m excited to see all of it, but there’s something really special about seeing your favorite song performed live, y’know?
The people saying they love the musical theater version of Rogers voice are missing what Jonathan Larson was going for. He wanted to break musical theater cliches. This is a rock opera not a upbeat one. The rawness is Adam Pascal could not be replaced. Jon hand selected Anthony and Adam. Their harmonizing is like none other. All the other versions are good. But not what Larson was intending.
When I first listened to this song, in the beginning it was a little obnoxious. Then Roger enters and it's a good song. Then 3:02 kicks in and holy shit it's beautiful.
I disliked the song till that point too. I think the mixture of both parts just adds some form of soothing yet kickass chemistry which adds to the effect. John did it right
I'm so sorry. I dream of playing Mimi, and if my school ever dared to be rent, the musical director's favorite pupil would be cast as Mimi, and I would die (this girl got the lead in the musical we did do, and she skipped the damn auditions). The funny thing is, I started singing Rent at rehearsal one day, and everyone said I was a perfect Mimi, and then she said how she would love to be Mimi, and everyone told her she'd never be able to do it. ^.^ but really, Im so sorry. Id have been crushed.
Actually in this version (the filmed on Broadway DVD) they use a tiny bit of pitch correction. I saw it in a behind the scenes video. The writers of this wanted the last ever preformance of RENT (this version here) to be stunning. So they added the pitch correction post preformance. However, if you had been in the audience this night there would have none. And besides, they used so little it just sounds like they all have perfect pitch!
@TheFearlessforever13 It's the idea that no one actually feels anything any more. Like when Mark talks about 'that drip of hurt, that pint of shame', how people just look the other way and try to quash their emotions so much. So in the end, when they do feel, it's not even their own feelings - it's just what they're being fed by the system. And Mark and Roger are trying to break through that.
Will isn't my favorite Rodger, his voice is too smooth. It doesn't have the rough texture of Adam's. Which changes the effect a little. But this song is way good (Will is an amazing singer don't get me wrong).
Technically a Tenor, but he's been played by lots of baritones because the range isn't that high..the tessitura can be a bit demanding for some baritones though so the role goes to tenors most oftenly
Im 99% sure he is playing Princton/Rod in the off Broadway version of Avenue Q at the New World Stages in New York. Its really funny cause they have an off version brodway of RENT there also but he in Avenue Q
I'm going to audition for this at the Plano Children's Theatre and I think I will be the only kid in this production cause I'll be surrounded by teens but I really want to be Mark even though I'm a girl and I can hit his notes down low
listen to 4:13 and dont tell me they both sing the note wrong its just because ist slirghtly to deep for autotune to correct it upwards apart of that i cant hear any glissandi (dont know if the words right im german xD)
100% sure they do not use autotune on Broadway. Fine example from this song is the part where they go down in 'millenium', autotune wouldve fixed it for them ;)
Im so confused at the beginning. They buried Angel, but the priest ran them off the property cause they had no money? Someone explain that to me, I feel stupid right now. Also, this Marc is really good. Anthony Rapp will always be my Marc, but this guy was pretty good. Adam Pascal will always be Roger too, I love the toughness of his voice, this guy didn't cut it. But a damn good performance, Ill admit it.
Best song from rent, in my humble opinion.
Absolutely man. Actually one of the best songs ever written period
tankmaster1018 YAAAAS
spooky sky I agree
I love this song, but i think "Rent" is the best song in Rent. To be fair though, there isn't a bad song in the whole play. I've seen it twice now, once by the students at Interlochen and just recently attended the 20 year Anniversary tour and can't wait to see it again
spooky sky for me its christmas bells
"I don't own emotion, I rent." My favorite line in the whole show. :3 And this number holds a special place in my heart. When I was in RENT, the entire cast who was not on stage at the time had a HUGE dance party during this song.
Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal will always be my favorite Mark and Roger but I prefer this performance of the song to the original. I think Adam and Will's voices compliment each other's just a bit better and I really like Will's voice in general. I love their acting here too.
both pairs are pretty equal in my opinion. both duos match very well together
Yessssssss, Im freakin in love with wills voice. Tbh him and Aaron play the best Rogers but don’t get me wrong Adam is iconic
when Collins says "that's no way to send a boy to meet his maker!" it makes me sad idk why...this Collins breaks my heart.
this is my favorite song from RENT
Wow, this is a great Mark. One of the better Rogers I've seen, too.
I like the Mark in this. He probably is again my second favorite. Nobody can be Mark like Anthony Rapp. He Originated the role and- He does it the best. Adam comes in second
***** I totally agree. Anthony will always be the best in my book, but Adam is incredible.
Playing Mark in my production of RENT this summer and I'm hella looking to Adam Kantor for my inspiration. ❤️
TonyLee so am I!! He’s my main influence
I love this Broadway version!! Yes the movie is great but it just feels too produced. This just feels more raw and real
This was the final performance on Broadway. About as raw and real as it gets....
I hate the movie sm- your right- it just feel SO manufactured and not raw and rent-y enough
I love bennys change of heart, he went from being an arse to being a decent enough guy, he paid for angels funeral, he offered to pay for mimi's rehab/treatment
Love the harmony and the line " Your living in America leave your conscience at the tone."
My favorite Rent song ever !!!
My favorite Mark.
I'm doing rent right now and I'm playing mark
It's has been an absolute dream
And from the funeral scene on is my favorite of the entire musical
I was lucky enough to watch this cast perform. I love this song so much. And what made my showing extra special was that Will Chase signed my Playbill!
No autotune going on here. They're that good. That's why they're on Broadway;)
I've never seen a theatre put on Rent where they had a Roger who could actually sing
That's why you don't go for a guy with a "rock voice". You go for a guy with a music theater/classical voice who can emulate a rock voice.
Sedraen you should have seen my schools production.Rogers voice was amazing
The belgian production in 2015 had the most amazing Roger I've ever heard. He is dutch and also played in Tanz der Vampiren (his name is Milan van Waardenburg). He will (by voice) always be my favorite roger!
Carter Teasley the UK's 20th anniversary tour...the Roger was incredible, he really embodied Adam Pascal and also brought his own twist to the character 💛

[Mark]
Don't breathe too deep
Don't think all day
Dive into work
Drive the other way
That drip of hurt
That pint of shame
Goes away
Just play the game
You're living in America
At the end of the millenium
You're living in America
Leave your conscience at the tone
And when you're living in America
At the end of the millenium
You're what you own
[Roger]
The filmmaker cannot see
[Mark]
And the songwriter cannot hear
[Roger]
Yet I see Mimi everywhere
[Mark]
Angel's voice is in my ear
[Roger]
Just tighten those shoulders
[Mark]
Just clench your jaw til you frown
[Roger]
Just don't let go
[Both]
Or you may drown
You're living in America
At the end of the millenium
You're living in America
Where it's like the Twilight Zone
And when you're living in America
At the end of the millenium
You're what you own
So I own not a notion
I escape and ape content
I don't own emotion- I rent
[Mark]
What was it about that night?
Connection
In an isolating age
For once the shadows gave way to light
For once I didn't disengage
Angel, I hear you, I hear it
I see it, I see it, my film
Alexi - Mark
Call me a hypocrite
I need to finish my
Own film [Roger]
What was it about that night?
Connection
In an isolating age
For once the shadows gave way to light
For once I didn't disengage
Mimi I see you, I see it
I hear it, I hear it, my song
One Song Glory
Mimi Your Eyes!
[Mark]
I quit!
[Both]
Dying in America
At the end of the millenium
We're dying in America
To come into our own
And when you're dying in America
At the end of the millenium
You're not alone
I'm not alone
I'm not alone
Adam is such a cutie!!
I think I prefer Adam and Will as Mark and Roger. Really great chemistry on stage.
this is by far the best version of this song I have ever seen. its perfect.
Did this song just predict BuzzFeed? Because it seems quite like it lol.
Yesss! That's what I think too!
Maybe BuzzFeed is just the most convincing parody ever.
i love adam kantor 😭
Favorite version of this song
Cooper Hoffman I like your pic 😏 #rent4ham
I absolutely love when Adam sings, "At the end of the millennium," his eyebrows raise
My favorite song of the show
God, love those two!!!

Omg Will Chase! I luv it. Yes! Wheel's Up!!
Will's voice is so much different than Adam's voice but I love them both
This is my favorite cast and I'm wayyyy too excited for Adam kantor in fiddler
Emma Mueller original cast was hand Selected by Larson. They emulate exactly how each character was suppose to sound. The OG will always be the best.
I absolutely love this song. It's my life in music form
He taught a voal class with a program I did in NY & was such a sweetheart
will chase is a great singer, so is aaron tveit, and i assume the roger i see on the anniversary tour this year also will be. but for me no one can beat adam pascal. i can hear other marks but especially for this song no one will ever top adam
I'm so in love with Adam it's not even funny
Agreed x9000
Not only famous for cooking but also a marvelous theatre singer.
HahaA!
I always thought the lyrics were "you're living in a miracle, at the end of the minellium"
I...I...I don't know which one I'd jump first...Mark? Roger? They're both so...so...Just so bloody perfect...
And Adam's just the cutest little thing ever. The kind of guy you just want to hug again and again because he looks so cuddly. XD
yeah. I saw him. haha. After I left that comment 3 months ago, I went to New York and saw both Rent and Avenue Q. He was indeed playing Princeton and Rod and he did a great job. It was kinda funny seeing him in that after Rent.
the best duet in the whole musical
I am a big fan of the movie cast but this Mark is a good one! I might like him better than the movie Ma Der
i am loving this Roger...he has as much appeal as Adam had for me. and that was ALOT lol!!W
This is a really good performance
I love how Adam sings the word "own"
Will Chase, again, proves just how much of a god he is.
I’m going to see Rent in February and this is my favorite song from the musical. I’m excited to see all of it, but there’s something really special about seeing your favorite song performed live, y’know?
Adam is so hot in this
Adam's always so hot tho.
i love adam kantor in this role
Go see Adam Kantor in the bands visit. He is phenomenal.
You're what you own!
Wish I could hear Adam Kantor and Adam Pascal on the song together. If only cuz it'd be an Adam duet.
the best rent's show ever! broadway are the best version of rent i ever seen
Best song from Rent.
You are a fantastic mark!
Will Chase's eyes! They make me swoon

doing this at the Edinburgh fringe all month and I cannot goddamn wait
is it bad that i like the movie so much better? this is one of my favorite marks though

Well, did they do the musical? 😁

Perfect performance???????

I've got such a crush on Mark in this. Haha
3:30 - 3:36 gave me the chills.
"Must be nice to have money."
"No shit."
Amazing
"Oh my God.."
Technically a Tenor, but he's been played by lots of baritones because the range isn't that high..the tessitura can be a bit demanding for some baritones though so the role goes to tenors most oftenly

He did play PRINCETON / ROD
Anthony Rapp is amazing
I don't own emotion - I rent.
Vampire Welfare queens who are compulsive bowlers... oh my god...
Just WOW
The line "We're dying in America at the end of the millennium." really hits me tbh. Fuck.
I'm going to audition for this at the Plano Children's Theatre and I think I will be the only kid in this production cause I'll be surrounded by teens but I really want to be Mark even though I'm a girl and I can hit his notes down low
Plano…Texas? I have a friend who goes there.
Soooo did reality hit you?
I would love to play Mark
Rent I believe means you Rent your body and spirit before you go. Maybe?
Epic
@SingularDoubleCover He doesn't in the movie, and you'll be REALLY HARD PRESSED to find the OBC. good luck.
Who knows what Adam Kantor is doing now?
DO TOM AND BENNY GET TOGETHER/?!?!?!?
Oh god... the fanfics... xD
StripesofShay no, Benny is married.
StripesofShay no, but Benny starts to get along with them
It's implied that Alison divorces him after she finds out he's sleeping with Mimi. Cheating on her.
Are you sure you're Tony Stark?
They sound fine to me haha. They don't do autotune on Broadway:P
Epic bro hug, where are you? :(
listen to 4:13 and dont tell me they both sing the note wrong its just because ist slirghtly to deep for autotune to correct it upwards apart of that i cant hear any glissandi (dont know if the words right im german xD)
100% sure they do not use autotune on Broadway. Fine example from this song is the part where they go down in 'millenium', autotune wouldve fixed it for them ;)
sure? i know they do it in big german productions and noone knows either (i know it from my vocalist teacher)
Adam is baritone/tenor, which Mark's range should be.
IT"S JOE JONAS!!!!
2:48 >>>>>
the guy who plays mark looks like joey grecko from cheaters
That would be my interpretation, anyway. :)
Raping the replay button.
Is the guy who plays Mark a Baritone??
He is really hot.
