glad to see someone else using Walnut on a boat. Make me feel less superstitious about using it on mine, lol. It is a beautiful wood, and I happen to have milled a bunch of it from a tree that I cut down last year.
Brilliant method of fitting... get one side close and scribe to fit, then trace the other side. Seems like common sense. But you see so few people use this technique. Good on you for using your brain to get a proper fit. Way to set an example of the K.I.S.S. Principle.
I really enjoy watching you make the little details for the boat that give it a visual pop. I had wondered about how the set back of the edge trim on the shear line would look and what do you know... it came out beautiful. Well done and thanks for sharing Bob
Thank you Bob for sharing another build video. Glad to see your hand looks 100%. Neat trick on the resaw of the covering boards. Always learn something from your videos. I'll say it again, this little yacht is going to be a real head turner. Take care and have a great week ahead.
I just found the right words Bob, you are a "wood taylor" ! Nothing less ! Once again, thanks a lot for sharing these great moments of fine work, precision and accuracy are your strength !
@@TheArtofBoatBuilding I got a little lucky with that one. :) I still have a leak in my center board trunk. back off of the trailer and blocked up in the shop. pull the centerboard tonight. making me crazy. This time, I know almost exactly where it is. Press on!
This jig for conection in low angle is fantastic, makes the pieces have a perfect joint. Congratulations for another magnificent video and good to watch.
Hi Bob! Love to see the progress, your boat is beautiful. I have been watching since the first episode. I returned home this past Sunday from a week at the Wooden Boat School and spent a week sailing the beautiful Haven's and Herreshoff 12 1/2's! We had a great week of weather and were able to sail every day. I learned a bunch and our instructors Martin Gardner and David Bill were beyond awesome. We are going to have a bit of a reunion at the Wooden Boat Show next month, will you be there again? (you and I met there briefly in 2019 but I'm sure I was just another anonymous visitor to you) I have dreams of sailing my own Haven some day, thanks for the inspiration and hope to see you in August!
Hi Robert, Thank you! I took the sailing class in 2018 and Martin was one of my instructors as well. Great guy! Yes, I plan on being at the boat show with my Haven. I’ll look forward to seeing you again. Cheers, Bob
Not only are you a skilled and talented wood worker, but I must compliment you on your videos. You put in extra effort to explain how and why you work. I really look forward to seeing this boat completed.
Indeed Bob, you certainly make it beautiful and I aspire to do that too. And I very much like that you put real time footage in your videos. That gives me a good sense of what it really takes to do the work. Other channels switch to fast forward to show the result. Cheers F
Well Bob, you indeed are not a hypocrite to your own standards that is " if your going to make it, at least make it beautiful." because you have certainly managed that much!!
You use staples that you later remove; there are fiber pin nails that can be left in the material and can be planed or sanded without damaging your tools. The holes are smaller also. Maybe you knew about those, and if you did, at least I fed the algorithm! ;)
For a gold key boat it is one of the Prettiest out there. I'm building my boat to look good from 20 feet and get beat up with use. Faster to the water and a whole lot cheaper.
Yup, difference in perspective, I suppose... Beautiful at touching distance takes more time and attention to detail than an "at a distance of 20 feet" boat does, but so true that a 20' distance boat will get to the water more quickly. I suppose it all depends on your priorities. Whether you want a "show" boat or a "get out and go" boat; as long as you are happy with the results, that is really all that matters.
Hey, for some shots in this video, the picture is really jerky and weird, but then it clears up and looks excellent as always. Maybe one of your cameras needs a stern talking to? Love following along on this build!
Hi Mattias, Good eye. Yes, I had a couple of clips where the camera was set at the wrong fps. Once discovered I reshot what I could. Always learning! Cheers, Bob
Interesting resaw lesson. Did you have to do anything extra other than accounting for the groove depth? Were you resawing on one side of the groove kerf? Lots of bits of trim that I suspect I could easily overlook even though they are clear on the plans. Thanks for the video.
Hi Robert, Yes, I stayed to one side of the kerf. It was very interesting that If I deviated out of the kerf I immediately could feel it. Thanks for watching! Cheers, Bob
@@TheArtofBoatBuilding I'm wondering if your going Sloop or Gaff rig? Also if your mast will be solid or hollow? Will you try the bird mouth router method? Hopefully for the spars anyway!!! Hope your well. 😃
Looks like an airplane shaped anvil with a blade that comes down to sheer off what ever you're cutting. Definitely never seen sheers like this before, myself.
As with most HF tools they did need a bit of fine tuning. Mostly sharpening, also the iron was in backwards on 2 of them. Great little tool for your boat building arsenal. Cheers, Bob
Not necessarily. UA-cam has kicked me out of a few of my subs. That may have happened to you as well. They also have failed to alert me to many of my notifications. I missed like 6 videos in a row on this channel because I never got the alerts. Now I am getting caught up again, but I just assumed he was in recovery for his hand so I hadn't checked. Many channels I have had to un-sub and re-sub to start getting notifications again.
I've sailed but never made a boat but it's clear making or sailing these are one of our greatest pleasures.

With that jig you should be able to scarf both boards at the same time.
Always a pleasure watching your videos! And I should mention, I’m always envious of your wood shop!
I appreciate that!
Meticulous craftsmanship and artistry

Love your work. A functional piece of art. Can hardly wait to see her sail!
You and me both!
Thank you!

Ditto.
Great episode Bob 😀
What’s left to do? A mast, boom, and rigging. The sails. The rudder and transom board.
Splash day will be coming soon.
That’s pretty much the short list. I will be casting the bronze fittings and sewing the sails. So in reality launch should be in the spring.

Yeah, I've seen plastic/nylon pin nails for an air nailer too. They can be planed as well. Not sure if these are what you were referring to.

Its good to see your back at it. You must be a little disappointed you won't be done for the Wooden boat festival. Are you still going?

Yes, I'm still planning on going. Just going to bring the boat at it current state of completion.

Beautiful work. Should of flipped the cover pieces on the opposite side, to see how symmetrical your work is.
I'll show that in the next episode. It's pretty close!
Hey Bob, what were those snips you used on the 1/8" strip around 12:45?
I think they are upholstery trimmers. Micro-mark sells them.

Yes, it will be reveled soon!
Those mini planes were a bargain. Thought at first you had made them yourself.
Same here. They look like something Bob would make. That he considers them usable is a good recommendation for them.

Cover boards and trim are to a boat what lipstick and earrings are to a woman.
Not really necessary, but on some women they do make them look better.
