Worth noting: the 3 bass patterns represent bars 1-4, 5-8, and 9-12 of a classic 12-bar blues progression. I think it's smart not to mention it in a 2-minute explanation, great video!
I'm terribly sorry for this extremely late comment, I do understand that there is a certain "no commenting on X year old videos" tradition on youtube, but I just couldn't help myself. First of, these videos are amazing! The style of its execution and the amount of information crafted concisely into a 2 minute video are an artistic achievement the likes of which I rarely see anywhere! I thank you sincerely for all of your amazing work you put in there and gave us for free for us to enjoy. Anyways, are there really only three different ways you can do the bass section for it to still be considered "Boogie Woogie"? If that's the case, then it's no wonder that I get tired of listening to any music within that style for more than 15 minutes, half of the entire melody is repeated in every music piece!
Thank you very much for leaving a comment, I'm glad you like my educational videos! As far as I'm concerned, there is no "no commenting on X year old video" policy on my channel :) There are definitely more than 3 ways to play the piano bass section of a boogie woogie, here I've just showed the most popular ones!
Scofa you have to master your left hand pattern and be able to play it while playing some other rhythms in the right hand. I‘d recommend starting slowly and using a metronom to keep your tempo and then start getting faster over time. But first learn some right hand riffs and when you‘ve mastered them start playing both hands together.
It's really impressive how fluid you can make it sound. I would really like to be able to play this way. Awesome job! Guess I should start practicing more.
I have memories of my mom and her siblings having Boogie Woogie “battles” at our family reunions and it was always the most fun time. Love this so much.

I've been playing piano as an amateur for 30 years, and can do a modest version of stride with my left hand, but the sheer concept of playing boogie woogie leaves me in awe. It's on another level.
I’m fourteen, after watching this video I bought a book of left hand patterns and licks, and after four months I can play this entire song. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
@@sstar62 Thought I'd share this with everyone, (or anyone who sees this.) When I posted a year ago, I still made a lot of mistakes, had terrible, terrible timing, and very little pressure control. The two things that helped me improve the most were learning to play duets with my younger sister (she is now twelve, and started learning piano around the time I did. We're at about the same skill level, but she prefers classical music.) And playing the rhythm game "Osu Mania". Here's my rendition of "Maple Leaf Rag" Which I have been working on. Hope you guys enjoy. (forgive the sound quality.) ua-cam.com/video/X4deV6G0rgw/v-deo.html
Just watched 3 of your videos and I LOVE them. I'm a rapper that also loves jazz and I've been wanting to incorporate jazz into rap but I never payed enough attention in jazz band to actually know any theory. Planning on going to college for music theory though but I'll be watching all of your videos to get caught up hopefully haha
This is a great demonstration of why boogie woogie is aweomse, and at the same time explaining how it works, plus keeping the listener entertained with some really nice playing! I love it. Side note: you can see the influence this genre had on rock'n'roll.
One of the most logically informative videos ive ever been lucky enough to have watched. You are a true talent when it comes to teaching as well as music. Thank you.
I just realised both how much the songs or sections of songs I enjoy are related to Boogie-woogie, but also how similar the reason I watch these videos is to the reason I watch breakdowns on sorting algorithms. I don't have instructions, I couldn't make either if put on the spot, but I gained a new way of thinking and that powerful feeling of understanding now that I know something more than just surface level.
Dave, I love your videos. It's rare seeing somebody who explains so nicely as you. It's just impossible watch a video of your channel and do not get entirely the idea. And also is a pleasure seeing you play, you master the instrument.
Dave Wave Thank you so much, this is so useful! You explain everything so well and succinctly that it has inspired me to get up and just give it a go with such fun anticipation! So much easier than learning the slow traditional way ie., reading music or, learning by ear alone. Such fun, happy music! Cheers! Su
Your videos are absolutely godlike. Makes fun to watch, I learn very much as a producer, even people without knowledge would enjoy these videos! Appreciate you
