I had that problem - My cat went out in 2014. It was towed to a local mechanic and got a price of $900 to replace it with cat that was a "brand that was compatible" and "just like" the OEM part. It lasted less 18 months (of course only a year warranty), so I bought it to another mechanic (this mechanic had been a master mechanic at BMW for 30 years and opened his own shop 15 years ago - people here love him - I found him on Yelp) - he told me NEVER, EVER buy a non-OEM major part for the Z3. He replaced it with the proper part and she has been fine ever since. It was expensive but not a waste of money.

Hi. I'm living in Dublin, Ireland. I have had a 1998 Z3 1.9 for the past 5 years. It's blown through 2 aftermarket catalytic converters in that time. Don't know why. New cats cost over 2 grand as opposed to 600 for aftermarket. What we've done is straight-piped the exhaust (makes a great sound), and removed the new cat (the third one), but left it so my garage can bolt the cat on and off. Each year, cars need to be tested for all safety items, including emissions, and just before the test, we bolt in the cat and remove it immediately afterwards. Love to know why it keeps blowing cats and if it's a general problem with BMWs of this age. Thanks for the channel, by the way.

My guess would be that extra "unwanted" fuel may be entering the catalytic converter. It may a faulty spark plug, a malfunctioning fuel injector or even a plugged air cleaner. If the heating element on the oxygen sensor is mot functioning correctly that may cause extra fuel to be dumped into the exhaust. I would have the car scanned by a reputable mechanic to be sure the fuel system parameters are all within specs. Coolant may even be getting into the exhaust through a leaking head gasket however, there would be many other syptoms if that was the case.

Appreciate the comment! That is something I suspected, don't have codes, but I need to run a deeper scan.

Unfortunately the codes which you obtain from an older vehicle are often not as useful as what you get in the newer vehicles. In a newer vehicle, you can get very precise information from the codes however, with an older vehicle that just doesn't happen. At least these are a few things you could start with. Maybe you can go through those things that I mentioned visually and you might find something but I wouldn't rely on finding it through the codes. They often don't even show up. Cheers, 👍

My guess is the issue is aftermarket parts. Otherwise it could be overheating. Could have unburned fuel damaging it. Are you using premium gas? I know you are not supposed to use regular 87 fuel. I use 91 octane only.

I use 89 in mine. The unburnt fuel is something I've thought about. Wondering if I'd get a code from the O2 sensor ahead of the cat? Sorry to kill so many cats, coolcat! Happy holidays!

@@MomentofZed I don't know if your 4 Cylinder is different from my 6 cyl but inside the gas compartment on the lid it does say premium fuel only. If you use a lower octane fuel than recommended, you can destroy your engine over time. Check to see if it's labeled on your gas lid for what you should be using or check your owner's manual to see if maybe you need to increase the octane.

Just a guess, but could it be the secondary air pump? I believe that pump is used to pre heat the CAT when it's cold and may be connected to your problem

Thank you! I'll have to look into that. Appreciate the insight!
