Electrodactus is made by a very smart guy that lives in Saskatchewan. I emailed him once and he sent me a huge email with a great deal of info on various setups and designs. top of the line products for sure
So glad you made a video of the Absolute Best BMS out there. I have a few for my PV's and power wall. Also this BMS needs Mass production since it's so great and Dacian from Electrodacus cannot on is own produce in such large quantities. If people from the RV community knew that instead of having to buy a solar controller plus a BMS for the batteries you could buy this Solar BMS for half the price. These would sell like hotcakes.

What is nice about the SBMS is that it's a BMS and also a PWM charger if you plan ahead and match the voltage of the solar panels to the voltage of your batteries. While MPPT is more efficient, if you do the math, adding more solar panels is both cheaper and less maintenance. Because eventually the capacitors needed for the voltage conversion in MPPT chargers fail, they just have a limited lifespan. So a setup with the SBMS will last you longer and is cheaper. To me this was all quite confusing and took me a while to understand the what and whys here. Electrodacus also made a thermal battery management system. Basically excess solar power once your battery is full is dumped into a thermal mass, like normal wires in barrels of water or in concrete. It's actually cheaper to heat with PV solar than with those thermal solar collectors. Just add more panels because they have become so cheap! Personally, as an electro-noob I wish there was a version including MPPT and up to 16S but only because of my specialized requirements. I need more energy efficiency per solar area (limited space for solar panels) and also need 48V to power a ships motor. At least that is my dream haha. But for most off grid systems the SBMS looks like the smartest solution.
I think most houses in the suburbs are still limited by available area that can get sun. If I had a rural property with some space, I would totally go Electrodacus as you can throw up as many cheap as dirt used ebay panels as you need. This seems like the exact, concise, inexpensive solution for that scenario.
It's actually not PWM it's just a controlled direct connection between the panels and the battery. Hence why Dacian stresses matching the panel voltage to your battery voltage.
@@stingy49 Yeah thanks, I wondered that. The panels basically act like a current limited source and the voltage drops (and the efficiency slightly). So it's actually not PWM. So the panels are already the perfect charger as long as they don't produce too much current. Hmm, thinking about this now I understand why the SBMS0 and DSSR20 turns rows of panels on and off in levels depending on how charge level and how much current the sun is producing. Otherwise with a low battery and full sunshine you could deliver too much current into the batteries.

Suggestion for getting this funded: Do a video walking through your recommendations on what to purchase on the indiegogo page and maybe tie it to example setups using your battery packs. The problem is the indiegogo page is too confusing...too many options. There needs to be something more like: buy this plus this and you will have a phenomenal pack that can do this
Sure, would love to support this and get to use this BMS but... I need a 24S (72-90v) smart BMS that can support 100A continuous and 300A peak discharge for a vehicle application and this can't do it... 40A?!?! Comeon.... There are tons of smart BMSs on Aliexpress that fit my application and they are a third of the price too. Sure they don't look as cool and take a little longer to get used to (mainly due to Chinese translation) but they do the job very well and, again, much more affordable. 3D bros - build one that's proper hardcore, please! Actual active balancing, protection board, 32S, 300A, bluetooth, onboard screen, fully enclosed etc... The kind of do-all BMS to rule them all!

Dacian (Electrodacus) makes a great product. I have one of his newer SBMS40 units and it works great. It is a well laid out design and works flawlessly.
Yeah! Received my SBMS40 today. Wish it would have shipped with a set of 24" BMS leads. I found two 5 pin connector cables but of course the color codes don't match so increases chances of making a wiring mistake thereby creating bad reviews or support issues for Alex.
I have one problem. I wana convert my sailboat to electric. Using 2x520wp24v solar panel and wana use lithium battery 48v300ah. So i will need a 14s bms. What will you use. The electrodacus don't have 14s

always said until a BMS exists that can balance as they charge rather than only when cells are full I won't bother. Don't want to charge my ebike or skateboard past 80% for longevity reasons but still want balanced cells. if i can set this to 80% and still balances then I'll love this
If you have room in your builds you can wire in your normal bms, and then add the wires from a higher amp balance board and disconnect your bms then plug in the balance board for a better balance once a week. They are pretty small too
Jk bms can do that. Ive got 2 and they work great. Only thing I don't like is the standby power consumption is to high. About 1wh which is fine for a solar set up but could be annoying for mobile use. It has an on off button which is nice but I don't like that it can drain a 300wh battery in 2 weeks. It will auto shut off at any voltage you pick so nothing is damaged just annoying. I wish it had a timer to shut off
While this is a great BMS we really need one that does more cells for many of us for it to be useful. 3-8 cells is great but doesn't work great when you've got a 14s setup.
In the winter would there be a way to use a capacitor (super, ultra ect...) So when there's short periods of light between clouds, as it charges a lot faster then a battery is there a way to run it before the battery. So it charges while there is short cloud coverage or intermittent cloud coverage? Similar to a way a car powercap is used? Thanks for your videos. Steve.
Does the SBMS40 use a PWM algorithm on the PV input, to throttle the connection to the battery as the battery approaches full charge? If not PWM, then what is it doing to taper the current at the end of the charge cycle?
I like it, but I wish it was setup as a main device that could get information from a bunch other BMS. In my main pack I've got 6 1KW/h packs each with their own bms, and it would be sweet if I could monitor each one

Can’t help you I joined the mega cell campaign last March in first group. I had not received my charger or that it was shipped, I contacted Alex and was told shipper didn’t send info for 7 orders and mine was one of them. Orders after my order number have shipped but 7 orders were skipped. Had not heard back from him. Currently I am asking for a refund. So buyer beware. It’s all great until you are the one that didn’t get what was paid for and promised. Very nice design hope it works out. Update Funds were refunded by Alex.
Thanks for the review on this. Any recommendations on a BMS and compact light weight battery 60v / 60ah? I have a Weped GT50 electric scooter. My battery output is only 14.7A max @ 60V for short periods, and only 9.8A continuously. The dual motors are rated for 1800 watts continuous each. The battery can only deliver a peak output of 60 x 14.7 = 882 watts. I would like to upgrade the battery with better cells and BMS. 3600 watts / 60 v = 60 amps...that's the output the battery should be able to deliver.
Yes this is a great idea and the design covers all the issues. I did go look at the link to the go fund me page. I guess I don’t have the cash flow most of you guys have. I just can’t have a 129.00 BMS tied to one battery bank. Being able to set your upper and lower limits will drastically increase battery longevity. But that adds a lot of expense to my battery. Love to be able to afford one though....
Aside from the screen with the info built in and the solar options, the bms systems from china already have bluetooth and let you control all of the parameters from your smart phone or an installed screen
Too bad they don't have a DIY bundle. Have the bulk purchasing power but then just split the parts for the people who want to solder and program their own. I have been wanting to make a 40 and a 120. Its a open source open hardware project so it can happen. Would tip the creator too for his work.
Great product man. I think for it to sell affectively you have to hit the market HARD. find a supplier and link a deal. A product that leads the market needs to be flooded. The a V2.0 And you will have your winner.

If you get the cells at an equal voltage and connect the packs in parallel, then wire all balancing leads, one in theory. But in time the packs might get unbalanced and smoke in balancing wires might appear. One bms per pack would be best, or strongly connecting packs in parallel, cell by cell, not with thin wires

I don't know if you mentioned it but there is a downside to "hella configurable" and it comes with the realization that the mosfets that ensure safe operation are SOFTWARE controlled. In most "dumb bmses" they are controlled directly by voltage levels on the circuit so short of faulty parts or design it either works or doesn't. With this sort of device if the software gets stuck in a hang you can overcharge/discharge or short the battery without intervention. With a "dumb bms" those features are accomplished in fixed static hardware layout e.g. once the current sense resistors voltage gets too high the mosfets turn off etc...
The mosfets are not software controlled only. There's a specialized BMS chip that runs apart from the software used for setup. There are 2 parts of this BMS, one is taking care of the configurability, and the specialized chip that loads the configuration from EEProm when it boots. The software only allows you to turn on and off the load and charging manually, but the BMS chip watches the battery at all time.
Do you have experience with BMS and the SBMS? You could email dacian about this but my (uneducated guess) is that he considered this. His stuff was designed to be more reliable. Electronics and hardware fail too, and they also have bugs. Being software controlled is an advantage because this can detect failure modes and the simply close down instead of destroying your battery. With the SBMS you can see if it fails and can get a notification on your computer, with the cheap BMS you don't. If there is an issue, it can default to off. So it's safer. As long as the software is well tested which I believe it is. But I don't know enough about electronics so maybe you're right.
Unfortunately this is 12/24v. I need a 14s (48v) lithium-ion (18650) with display - like Chargery 16T but better quality than Charger 16T. I agree - for me I want to see info on a screen and NOT my phone or computer. Do you think Electrodactus will do 14s anytime soon?
I talked with Dacian and he wants to stay away from high voltage because it's dangerous. You need 60+ volts solar panels and above 48v is where things starts to get risky. So I think he is not getting above 24v setups any time soon
I am going to do a grid tied solar installation on my house and want to add a battery to be grid independent. Would these BMS be appropriate for a 48v system? It seems like they are only good for 24v. If they can be wired in series for 48v, how good is the headless version? My goal is to get an 11kW inverter that can do 50A 220V off of battery power to cover the most extreme needs I might have in a power outage, about 6kWh of solar panels and a battery that can keep my AC on for 2-3 days in case of a grid failure combined with cloudy skies. I'm not quite sure what that system will look like but I'm pretty sure I'm going to need capable BMS(s).
This system is made for 24V setups, I would not recommend connecting in series packs. Other people did it, but there can be weird behaviours if a pack fails or gets unbalanced. It will draw power unevenly and things like that. Using the proper tool for the job will be best
xiaoxiang. On alibaba.com makes a bms that comes with usb connection and an app to monitor and set parameters for each sell. I use them now for my cells in my solar system. manufacturers are way ahead with mass production and adapting to new demands.
But will this handle a 500 amp at 12 volts load if not then I will get the Rec A-bms it's compatible with Victron and the Wakespeed ws500 alternator controller

The ANTBMS units are fairly inexpensive and are fully configurable via Bluetooth from a smartphone and seem to be fairly decent units overall if you combine them with VBMS from Vortecks.
Don't believe so, the Dacus can do different battery chemistries but they all need to be the same chemistry. Maybe batrium with the individual boards for each module might work for that. You using salvaged cells?
@@leviclark2573 no, they're new cells. I have a 7s NMC battery, and a 4s LiFePo4 with a dumb BMS. If I used an ElectroDacus with the NMC battery, and used the charge controller settings along with it to set the charge profile for NMC, would that make them all get along?
If the cells are in good shape and they don't sag differently from each other, then you are good. But if there are big differences between cells, then current will go through the ballancing wire that's connected to both packs. When that happens fuses will pop or the thin wire

His are warranted for life. the new ones not sure but Dacian is working with them and gave them his blessings. there is also the DSSR20 that you hook 2 solar panels up to the battery at a time making each set of two panels independent so if there is some cloud not all of your panels will get taken out of power mode at the same time. go to his website to see what he has. look up Electrodacus.com and see for yourself
not for 48V 16S. simply because electrodacus has a 24V system and does not bother for that market. i suggested this years ago to him and he said it is made just for him. so there you go, he himself is not interested in marketing it.

Nice, but no active balancing and more power consumption than other devices. On the other hand it comes with a lot of good features. I developed a better one based on ACTIVE Balancing and ESP32 and Web Interface. So no display is needed, very low power....
Walther Matthau You need to put this up on your YT channel! Don't worry about polished video just try to keep it in focus and make certain your audio is as good as you can make it. Are you intending on bringing a product to market or making the information open source? Personally I have backed this project but it doesn't have much time left and hasn't quite reached its goal yet.

Wow, looks great ! Up to 16 cells. I would like to interface it with a 14 cell isolated charger I made, each cell gets same top charge. Works great especially for used cells. My electric scooter has a 14s pack I built, my electric self propelled mower has a 11s pack. Same charger top charges them. I would like to have a way to set voltage to whatever I want.

It is being made by the people that brought you the terrible Megacell Charger where you have to email for software activation codes and where the two founders constantly fight each other at the customer's expense and release an overall sub par product and haven't even delivered to most backers and are way behind schedule. Just a heads up... Shame on you Jehu for advertising things like this... EDIT: There are other users experiencing the same thing. Ben you need to understand that Dacian is on board with this project, as far as I know profits generated from this will be shared with him. As for your beef with Alex I suggest you try and work it out with him instead of coming here and making stuff up. Those are some weird accusations and bad words out there Ben. Not sure if you backed the project or not, or if we talked before, feel free to reach me at alex@megacellcharger.com to discuss about your problem. While MCC is not at a mature state, and most problems are software, that takes time to develop. Electrodacus software has more than 6 years of dev and that's a big advantage of this project. While we redesigned the board for easier manufacturing, we kept same original components, otherwise software would not work. Same type of mosfets, same quality shunts, the bms chip etc. DIY can be frustrating, but getting your rage through bad words on comments is not the most productive way, you could channel your energy to find what the problem that make you upset is and try to solve it. If MCC is not for you, I can give a refund, as I said, get in touch and will sort out. I know we cannot serve everyone, but we are doing the best we can. All the best!
jehugarcia Well yes, Dacian is on board because it’s open source and Alex can do whatever he’d like with the open source info. As per the Kickstarter explanation, it looks like they discussed profit sharing but decided against it. And I don’t see why I shouldn’t warn other potential customers and let them know my bad experience with Alex’s product. Also, please do clarify which part of my statement I made up? I’m just warning other people that these guys at Megacell over promise and under deliver. My problem Jehu is when you promote something like this to your large audience without acknowledging that the first endeavor by the the MCC team left a lot of unhappy customers and there is a decent chance the same will happen with this project.

What is warranted, however is sharing my opinion about the Megacell and how the entire Megacell Kickstarter was handled. It was over promised and under delivered. I get that you’re bringing this solid open source product to market, but why do you need another Kickstarter when you haven’t delivered on your first? My beef is that you have no problem taking people’s money with a less than solid plan to deliver.

@@jehugarcia I bought one of the recycled BYD batteries early this year and used a 20Watt resistor to bottom balance the cells. Then connected my MPP lv2400 to charge. Then top balanced cells with power supply. Been running w/o a BMS for 4 months and staying within .02V between cells and check them every couple weeks. So No, you don't need a BMS, until something goes wrong, then you'll wish you had one.

always said until a BMS exists that can balance as they charge rather than only when cells are full I won't bother. Don't want to charge my ebike or skateboard past 80% for longevity reasons but still want balanced cells. if i can set this to 80% and still balances then I'll love this
If you have room in your builds you can wire in your normal bms, and then add the wires from a higher amp balance board and disconnect your bms then plug in the balance board for a better balance once a week. They are pretty small too
Jk bms can do that. Ive got 2 and they work great. Only thing I don't like is the standby power consumption is to high. About 1wh which is fine for a solar set up but could be annoying for mobile use. It has an on off button which is nice but I don't like that it can drain a 300wh battery in 2 weeks. It will auto shut off at any voltage you pick so nothing is damaged just annoying. I wish it had a timer to shut off
ANT BMS works pretty well
While this is a great BMS we really need one that does more cells for many of us for it to be useful. 3-8 cells is great but doesn't work great when you've got a 14s setup.

In the winter would there be a way to use a capacitor (super, ultra ect...) So when there's short periods of light between clouds, as it charges a lot faster then a battery is there a way to run it before the battery. So it charges while there is short cloud coverage or intermittent cloud coverage? Similar to a way a car powercap is used? Thanks for your videos. Steve.
Does the SBMS40 use a PWM algorithm on the PV input, to throttle the connection to the battery as the battery approaches full charge? If not PWM, then what is it doing to taper the current at the end of the charge cycle?

I had not received my charger or that it was shipped, I contacted Alex and was told shipper didn’t send info for 7 orders and mine was one of them. Orders after my order number have shipped but 7 orders were skipped. Had not heard back from him. Currently I am asking for a refund.

Thanks for the review on this. Any recommendations on a BMS and compact light weight battery 60v / 60ah? I have a Weped GT50 electric scooter. My battery output is only 14.7A max @ 60V for short periods, and only 9.8A continuously. The dual motors are rated for 1800 watts continuous each. The battery can only deliver a peak output of 60 x 14.7 = 882 watts. I would like to upgrade the battery with better cells and BMS. 3600 watts / 60 v = 60 amps...that's the output the battery should be able to deliver.

Being able to set your upper and lower limits will drastically increase battery longevity. But that adds a lot of expense to my battery.

Aside from the screen with the info built in and the solar options, the bms systems from china already have bluetooth and let you control all of the parameters from your smart phone or an installed screen
Too bad they don't have a DIY bundle. Have the bulk purchasing power but then just split the parts for the people who want to solder and program their own. I have been wanting to make a 40 and a 120. Its a open source open hardware project so it can happen. Would tip the creator too for his work.

If you get the cells at an equal voltage and connect the packs in parallel, then wire all balancing leads, one in theory. But in time the packs might get unbalanced and smoke in balancing wires might appear.
One bms per pack would be best, or strongly connecting packs in parallel, cell by cell, not with thin wires

I don't know if you mentioned it but there is a downside to "hella configurable" and it comes with the realization that the mosfets that ensure safe operation are SOFTWARE controlled. In most "dumb bmses" they are controlled directly by voltage levels on the circuit so short of faulty parts or design it either works or doesn't.
With this sort of device if the software gets stuck in a hang you can overcharge/discharge or short the battery without intervention. With a "dumb bms" those features are accomplished in fixed static hardware layout e.g. once the current sense resistors voltage gets too high the mosfets turn off etc...
The mosfets are not software controlled only. There's a specialized BMS chip that runs apart from the software used for setup. There are 2 parts of this BMS, one is taking care of the configurability, and the specialized chip that loads the configuration from EEProm when it boots.
The software only allows you to turn on and off the load and charging manually, but the BMS chip watches the battery at all time.

Do you have experience with BMS and the SBMS? You could email dacian about this but my (uneducated guess) is that he considered this. His stuff was designed to be more reliable. Electronics and hardware fail too, and they also have bugs.
Being software controlled is an advantage because this can detect failure modes and the simply close down instead of destroying your battery.
With the SBMS you can see if it fails and can get a notification on your computer, with the cheap BMS you don't. If there is an issue, it can default to off. So it's safer. As long as the software is well tested which I believe it is.
But I don't know enough about electronics so maybe you're right.
Unfortunately this is 12/24v. I need a 14s (48v) lithium-ion (18650) with display - like Chargery 16T but better quality than Charger 16T. I agree - for me I want to see info on a screen and NOT my phone or computer. Do you think Electrodactus will do 14s anytime soon?
I talked with Dacian and he wants to stay away from high voltage because it's dangerous. You need 60+ volts solar panels and above 48v is where things starts to get risky.
So I think he is not getting above 24v setups any time soon

I am going to do a grid tied solar installation on my house and want to add a battery to be grid independent. Would these BMS be appropriate for a 48v system? It seems like they are only good for 24v.
If they can be wired in series for 48v, how good is the headless version?
My goal is to get an 11kW inverter that can do 50A 220V off of battery power to cover the most extreme needs I might have in a power outage, about 6kWh of solar panels and a battery that can keep my AC on for 2-3 days in case of a grid failure combined with cloudy skies.
I'm not quite sure what that system will look like but I'm pretty sure I'm going to need capable BMS(s).
This system is made for 24V setups, I would not recommend connecting in series packs. Other people did it, but there can be weird behaviours if a pack fails or gets unbalanced. It will draw power unevenly and things like that.
Using the proper tool for the job will be best

Charging will stop at the voltage you set, 4.2 for example, and can set when to start balancing, 4.1 ex

xiaoxiang. On alibaba.com makes a bms that comes with usb connection and an app to monitor and set parameters for each sell. I use them now for my cells in my solar system. manufacturers are way ahead with mass production and adapting to new demands.

The ANTBMS units are fairly inexpensive and are fully configurable via Bluetooth from a smartphone and seem to be fairly decent units overall if you combine them with VBMS from Vortecks.
I really like Electrodacus but it is only good for low voltage. Try th ant bms from icgogo. Good up to 32 s and blue tooth and screen.

Don't believe so, the Dacus can do different battery chemistries but they all need to be the same chemistry. Maybe batrium with the individual boards for each module might work for that. You using salvaged cells?
@@leviclark2573 no, they're new cells. I have a 7s NMC battery, and a 4s LiFePo4 with a dumb BMS. If I used an ElectroDacus with the NMC battery, and used the charge controller settings along with it to set the charge profile for NMC, would that make them all get along?

If the cells are in good shape and they don't sag differently from each other, then you are good. But if there are big differences between cells, then current will go through the ballancing wire that's connected to both packs. When that happens fuses will pop or the thin wire

yes it does talk to Dacian at his website or email him at electrodacus@gmail.com to get one from him. His are warranted for life. the new ones not sure but Dacian is working with them and gave them his blessings. there is also the DSSR20 that you hook 2 solar panels up to the battery at a time making each set of two panels independent so if there is some cloud not all of your panels will get taken out of power mode at the same time. go to his website to see what he has. look up Electrodacus.com and see for yourself

Nice, but no active balancing and more power consumption than other devices. On the other hand it comes with a lot of good features. I developed a better one based on ACTIVE Balancing and ESP32 and Web Interface. So no display is needed, very low power....

Wow, looks great ! Up to 16 cells. I would like to interface it with a 14 cell isolated charger I made, each cell gets same top charge. Works great especially for used cells. My electric scooter has a 14s pack I built, my electric self propelled mower has a 11s pack. Same charger top charges them. I would like to have a way to set voltage to whatever I want.

Ben you need to understand that Dacian is on board with this project, as far as I know profits generated from this will be shared with him. As for your beef with Alex I suggest you try and work it out with him instead of coming here and making stuff up. While MCC is not at a mature state, and most problems are software, that takes time to develop.
Electrodacus software has more than 6 years of dev and that's a big advantage of this project.
While we redesigned the board for easier manufacturing, we kept same original components, otherwise software would not work.
Same type of mosfets, same quality shunts, the bms chip etc.
DIY can be frustrating, but getting your rage through bad words on comments is not the most productive way, you could channel your energy to find what the problem that make you upset is and try to solve it.
If MCC is not for you, I can give a refund, as I said, get in touch and will sort out.
I know we cannot serve everyone, but we are doing the best we can.

As per the Kickstarter explanation, it looks like they discussed profit sharing but decided against it. And I don’t see why I shouldn’t warn other potential customers and let them know my bad experience with Alex’s product. Also, please do clarify which part of my statement I made up? I’m just warning other people that these guys at Megacell over promise and under deliver. My problem Jehu is when you promote something like this to your large audience without acknowledging that the first endeavor by the the MCC team left a lot of unhappy customers and there is a decent chance the same will happen with this project.

What is warranted, however is sharing my opinion about the Megacell and how the entire Megacell Kickstarter was handled. It was over promised and under delivered. I get that you’re bringing this solid open source product to market, but why do you need another Kickstarter when you haven’t delivered on your first? My beef is that you have no problem taking people’s money with a less than solid plan to deliver.

Mass adoption of diy battery building, I still run my packs without but I don’t recommend inexperienced builders (99% of my audience) to attempt it.
@@jehugarcia I bought one of the recycled BYD batteries early this year and used a 20Watt resistor to bottom balance the cells. Then connected my MPP lv2400 to charge. Then top balanced cells with power supply. Been running w/o a BMS for 4 months and staying within .02V between cells and check them every couple weeks. So No, you don't need a BMS, until something goes wrong, then you'll wish you had one.
