Gene Edited Babies and CRISPR: Beyond the Hype

  • Genetic engineering is not new, but news that CRISPR-Cas9 technology was used to modify the genes of twin babies in China took the world by surprise. Many scientists are understandably shocked that this experiment has seemed to take place without regulatory approval and without clear medical need. Regardless of the circumstances, a profound question has been asked: what is the place of gene editing in humans and where could this lead in the future?

People with all their "what ifs" Seriously? like "we better not build a car cause what if it kills someone" o-0 Or "we better not send men to the moon cause what if the rocket blows up"? Like this researcher said someone out there will or could be doing this already! Why not eliminate disease!! HIV, mental illness, deformities, etc! Leave the what if people want blue eyes for later !! Royal bloodlines have done Worse to keep the blood line pure !

@@carejaqoure2583 You make a fair point! There's always a balance between regulation and progress. Take the example of driving a car. If there were no road rules, then some people would get to their destination very quickly. But there would also be chaos on the roads and driving a car would be incredibly dangerous. On the other hand, if the speed limit was reduced to 10 kph everywhere, then driving would be very safe, but no one would get to their destination in a timely manner!
With gene editing, the challenge will be to balance regulation with scientific progress. We would want scientists to have enough freedom to innovate and use this technology to eliminate diseases. At the same time, we would want enough regulation to prevent chaos and harm from this technology.
      Thanks for your post!

Dear Ankit, I am extremely proud of your team efforts for making extremely informative videos of exceptional quality. I will love if you could tell us about scientific research on increasing memory power of younger and older human generations. It may solve a lot of problems and open up new horizons for humanity.

Currently Cas9 can only recognize genetic sequences of around 20 bases long. I dont see it being the tool to make super beings yet... but i could definitely see some random hobbyist in his basement cooking up the next pandemic.

The democratization of gene editing technology could be a blessing or a curse. On the one hand inexpensive gene editing could accelerate the learning curve, but on the other it could very easily fall into the wrong hands as you have mentioned. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Hi Digambar, that is an excellent suggestion! The science of ageing is very interesting. I'll add that to my list of potential future topics and review what other creators have already posted on UA-cam. I'll make a video on the topic if there is something new I can add.

Fair point about the plateau, but I think gene editing will be the exception and is immensely underhyped. The reason is GE to increase intelligence will cause an exponential increase in intelligence, and even merely doubling intelligence will transform the world into something we can't even comprehend today.
