because it's a straw man. men obviously have no problem with women's contributions. however, you will often hear feminists word women's contributions in such a way so as to belittle men and their contributions. for example, terms like "smashing up the old boys club" (which is annoying, because most men aren't even part of the "boys club" to begin with), or referring to less-successful men as being "little boys". there is also the prominent stereotype that men are blundering idiots and need women to fix the messes they create... you get the picture.

Any person trying to put down men is not a feminist. By definition it's fighting for the equal rights of women. So anytime someone seems to be trying to make women superior to men, you can tell them that they're not really a feminist, their a female supremacist. And the reason they say smashing up the boys club so often is because in almost every culture around the world women were not allowed to do certain things. It was actually illegal to try and own land and do things men have always been able to do. So yeah, it was kind of a boys club before the civil rights act was passed, before they got the right to vote.

Each side has extremist that hijack a noble cause and polarize it. They are not interested in a middle ground, solving problems or common ground. Cause Trolls. Looking at the path of feminism... Women's right to vote = agreed, Right to work with equal pay for equal work = agreed. #metoo = powerful abusers meet justice = agreed. Feminazi hijacks #metoo going down the man hater route, we don't need men, absurd often made up accusations to get a man fired at work, absured biased family courts against men .. Extremism does not go unanswered. It spawned the MGTOW mens movement and the lowest rate of marriage and childbirth the US has seen. A small but very vocal group of extremist can bring a major setback to your cause. Dramatically increasing the population of single older women and single mothers living in poverty is not what the creators of feminism had in mind.
I write Wild West steampunk, and some of my main characters are successful prostitutes. That's not the whole story, but yeah, this video is right. Great info here.
Love this show, Adam! One big concern though: when you say "women gained some level of autonomy here" or "women were granted suffrage there," I think it's important to qualify to which "women" you are referring. Were women of color granted such access to power? Could a cowboy of color have replaced the the white cowboy here? Perhaps you address race in another clip, but I think the distinction must be clear throughout--this western women's rights period may not have applied to all western women.
That's a very good point! These videos could use more intersectionality. Plus, the icon of the 'cowboy' in Westerns came from the vaqueros of Mexico. The trope of the 'buckaroo' who saves homesteads from Native Americans and 'no good varmints' was strictly a fantasy they sold to young white boys of a hero they could look up to -- a fantasy of white male power and heroism they could use to sell toys and make young white boys feel good about themselves. The whole significance in Toy Story of Woody being a cowboy doll was repackaging this association and making him an analogue to the father figure Andy was missing from his life. And all of this is based on a re-appropriated piece of Mexican culture.
THIS episode whitewashes how bad it was for women in the Wild West. The majority of women engaged in prostitution were young (most of them were under thirty years of age), with poor educations, largely illiterate, with families that had either cast them out or were not in a position to help them. Some of them were brought into the profession by their husbands or their mothers, or fell into it because they were seduced by their wealthy employers. These women simply didn't have the means to provide for themselves, other than by selling the one thing they had at their disposal.
It was a dangerous occupation. These women died in childbirth, of disease, and many of them met violent ends. Some of them became addicted to drugs, as they sought a means to drown their pain. Others committed suicide. And, much like today, many of these women ran the risk of being murdered. The prices varied depending on the woman's age and assets (young and inexperienced was good, as was attractiveness). On San Francisco's Barbary Coast-once termed "that sink of moral pollution, whose reefs are strewn with moral wrecks…" by the San Francisco Call-American women commanded a higher price than Mexican women and Asian women, while Native American women and redheads commanded a higher price than other white women, as Native American women and redheads were thought to be more amorous than the others.
You just described most people living in the west at that time period. Under 30 (as most people didn't live to that age anyway and most were married by 14) poorly educated, largely illiterate, and families that were not in a position to help or were to far away to help. Welcome to every man and woman living in the west.
In the wild west , women had 7x times higher life expectancy than men. So if you wanna travel back in time to the wild west, better be a woman. You think it was bad for women cuz they were exploited, prostituted, abused, discriminated? What about men who were tortured, enslaved, randomly killed, dying of starvation....it was totally anarchy (hence wild west) and women were the safest. If you were to raid a town, who would you kill first? men or women? if you had to take back the survivors as a reward/plunder, who would you choose? men or women?
Check Mate that does not negate the fact that some of these women took a horrible situation and make great things out of themselves business women home owners Richard and some of the people that actually tried to get between their legs so yes what you’re saying is a fact but it doesn’t change any of these facts either
Huh this was really informal and gave me a new outlook on prostitution. I'm actually planning on writing a book about prostitutes and strippers (it's a murder mystery) so I will definitely have this in mind while writing it. Thank you Adam for once again giving me interesting knowledge.
Balzsack mcdouchwad not to, um, "feed the trolls" but why should you not respect sex workers? there is a demand for the work they do and they fill it. they are doing a job that people want done and also they are humans so what makes you think they don't deserve respect?
Rajesh Choudhury I think you should consider the possibility that I would be fine if my daughter chose to become sex worker. it's her life. it's not a woman's responsibility to do things that please her parents.
Rajesh Choudhury well all I'm getting at is that people shouldn't disrespect others because of their job. people demand their service and they provide that service. but I'm not trying to change your philosophy. so yeah.
Interestingly enough, I recently read about prostiturtion in Ancient Greece, and some of those women were so rich, one of them offered to restore A WHOLE CITY after a fire (but them men declined because they were uncomfortable with it)
I live in a small town on the west of the Mississippi River, you often hear old legends about how the old downtown street was full of brothels. This town almost became the capital of Minnesota in its hey day.
Interesting sources. A single line pulled from various works, it appears. Some madams indeed did good works, though was that the common situation? Doubtful. Was there even all that many madams that made it big enough to do such a thing? Aside from the small mention of the danger, everything negative about being a prostitute is completely downplayed. What should be mentioned is all the women who had to dope themselves to service man after man that only took their hats off to do the deed with a woman lying on a bed covered in sheets to catch the fluids from each and every one. Let us also not forget the women who had to become street walkers, Basically a death sentence. There's a huge amount of sadness and pain wrapped up in the whole 'sex worker' industry, same as today. This is also completely forgetting all the settler families and mail order brides for men, and I'd wager FAR more of those went west then prostitutes. Basically, I'm sure prostitutes did a lot, but their level of contribution as compared to every other woman seems just a SMIDGE overblown in this video.
Yes, the Wyoming movement for women's suffrage was started by a widow who owned a hat shop, not a prostitute and that female governor wasn't a prostitute either. It's kind of rolling every pioneer woman's accomplishments under the heading of 'prostitute'. Some prostitutes were tough as balls and made good out of their situation, but it wasn't fun or easy work and they weren't the only women out west.
Well Gun-smoke, one of the most famous Western TV shows, already showed this. Miss Kitty owned the saloon/brothel. Marshal Dillon said on multiple occasions that she was the first business owner in town, unless you count the railroad. Also THATS ROZ FROM FRAISER!
I see a lot about this being the third upload, but it seems like a longer clip that provides more information and counters and signals a counter to some of the very criticisms I've seen in the comments of other clips of this episode. So maybe they felt they needed to re-upload with that extra bit (though I think it might have been better to upload a clip countering the criticisms further, unless all they did to point out men were still valuable was say this doesn't devalue the works of men, which would honestly be a little, well, little - why provide that point of view and say its untrue without really addressing it?)
But why did women have to do sex work to earn money and "gain power"? This video is designed in a way that paints the process of being a prostitute and doing sex work as liberating when in fact it's patriarchy and capitalism that left women with so little choices that time. It's the lifting of a burden from systemic oppression and onto the oppressed, having to commodify themselves to survive in that kind of society. People like to argue about choice but what kind of choices did women have that time?
I think it's saying that - despite the inequalities you just noted - the women still made significant contributions to their communities, which is impressive and deserving of recognition.
@Lesbian Amazon Sister that, is what makes these woman so amazing, thay risked there health and dingnity, to acheve power thay would not have had anyway
@@SN-mb6kv It's a rather contemporary situation. Honestly, if prostitution was ever legalised, it would probably only be done to try and increase safety.
its sad and surprising that you didnot mention how prostitution led to enslavement and trafficking in the wild west .Unfortunately,it is still the fact about the prostitution industry
Trivia Note: this episode was filmed in the Western Street at the Paramount Ranch. Which, sadly, burned to the ground in the Malibu fires last season. Same area used recently to film Tombstone. 😞
making it legal would make for better working conditions for those women already out in the streets, because regardless of legality, prostitution will always be a business. but they could seek protection from violent customers from the police if they were legit, they could form unions with health benefits, including contraceptives and doctor's appointments if they were legit, along with several other things.
***** Children with only one parent grow up just fine in the long term, as opposed to children with parents in unhealthy marriages. if prostitution is legit, it will bring a cultural shift where we don't have to feel ashamed of our own bodies, that's a healthy cultural shift to teach children in an era of eating disorders and low self esteem. Children of prostitutes don't have to feel ashamed of their mother or father's job if it's legit. As for women, in a world that moves towards equality and independence, women who have their own rights, and the rights of their own bodies, have the freedom to choose prostitution for a living if she wants to. how's that for dull thinking?
didnt they legalize it in the netherlands which wasnt very succesful since very few women from first world countries wanted to be prostitutes? it just ended up with prostitution crime circles?
Btw it's not that women couldn't vote it's that only people with money could vote so many men weren't allowed to vote either idk why they never talk about it in history books.
To second +David Britt, woman were specifically excluded in some states in the US up until the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. Before that point they had full franchise in some states (mostly in the west) and limited to no franchise elsewhere. In the UK, the picture is more simple; 1832 - Women were explicitly excluded from voting 1918 - Women over 30 allowed to vote 1928 - Women allowed to vote on the same terms as men
Women couldn't vote even if they were personally wealthy. It didn't matter if you were the world's richest widow, businesswoman, or heiress you couldn't vote.
@@davidbritt5020 Also poor white men could still totally vote in the US- hence why many politicians back in the day won by handing out whiskey and novelty bottles of hard cider
I love how Adam makes the statement that even if a women can make things or work just as hard as a man. I think if we didn’t have genders and the “small brain” statements on women and other races that weren’t white we wouldn’t have the overreaction that women can handle themselves and or even men. Such as how we “don’t need feminism” even though many women of struggling with lower pay than a man, poor treatment, and being sexual and domestically abused. And how a man can’t be abused as they are “strong men who can handle themselves”. Each person in the world needs to give up those ideas that negate those who need equality suck as women, some men who are abused or beaten, and the LGBTQ+ community. There are more problems, yet you can’t think you are a man and you hold power over women or anyone different than you. You the things and work you do is enough to understand that you are important and contribute to America.

I literally have no idea why prostitution is illegal in most of the US, it's perfectly legal in UK and I have no idea why people have a problem with people exchanging sexual favours for money with their own personal choice.
being a housewife is no different from prostitution, people talk like prostitution is the source of all evil things, they dare to insult these women thats why its sometimes not a good choice
many women marry because they cant earn money or they dont wanna earn money. exchance of money and sex. the difference is marriage is legal and monogamist
There is a difference between being a prostitute and being a housewife. Being a prostitute only gives you money. Being a house wife gives you a guarantee of shelter, food and security.

However, I'm also aware there's a long history of people being perfectly fine with groups having whatever rights they fought for decades ago, but fighting any further expansion of those rights tooth and nail. No one argued against women's right to vote during the height of the 2nd wave, but LOTS of people argued that voting was enough and all that birth control and equal pay crap was just madness.
Since this has been posted 3 times..does that suggest Adam likes prostitutes?

Wyoming was insistent on women voting because a great number of the voting population gave them more political power. This is considering the fact that Wyoming didn't have many ppl to begin with, so women's votes are there to benefit the male politicians

could never stand fragile ego. men and women alike. geez, calling out to self-thinking women and proof of women contribution as demeaning of men or hostility towards men like calling a feminist a "feminazi" or whatnot really are ridiculous. true feminist too took care of the crazies in their side, like the women who wanted all the benefits and none the obligation? we feminist call out them too ya know. we just wanted to be recognize as peers, with our flaws and strenght, as equal to men. be nice, open minded and grow a pair. :v
We literally just want equal rights. Feminism is pro women, and not anti men.
The dude playing Uncle Sam kills me. He is one of the best parts of the show

I write Wild West steampunk, and some of my main characters are successful prostitutes. That's not the whole story, but yeah, this video is right. Great info here.
I love that, even for a one-off joke about sarsaparillas, they cited their source. Respect.
Check Mate it's so true

Rajesh Choudhury I think you should consider the possibility that I would be fine if my daughter chose to become sex worker. it's her life. it's not a woman's responsibility to do things that please her parents.
Rajesh Choudhury well all I'm getting at is that people shouldn't disrespect others because of their job. people demand their service and they provide that service. but I'm not trying to change your philosophy. so yeah.

Oh my God, you got Roz from Frasier!

I just found about Adam about two days ago and I can't stop watching his videos. Plus, I like how he speaks.

Adam needs to make more videos, I love them, and he's hella
I see a lot about this being the third upload, but it seems like a longer clip that provides more information and counters and signals a counter to some of the very criticisms I've seen in the comments of other clips of this episode. So maybe they felt they needed to re-upload with that extra bit (though I think it might have been better to upload a clip countering the criticisms further, unless all they did to point out men were still valuable was say this doesn't devalue the works of men, which would honestly be a little, well, little - why provide that point of view and say its untrue without really addressing it?)
tru...TV.
But seriously, truTV doesn't post a full clip until the episode aired.
3:22 "i had nothin'" savage right there.
4:41 That is an amazing fact and has caused me to reevaluate my opinion of Wyoming, and give it some respect.
Wow, that part with "how they opened stores." is Wildly oversimplified!
I was wondering why she seemed familiar; it's Peri Gilpin. I could tell just by her voice.

So should Prostitution be legal, seems to be made positive in this video.
making it legal would make for better working conditions for those women already out in the streets, because regardless of legality, prostitution will always be a business. but they could seek protection from violent customers from the police if they were legit, they could form unions with health benefits, including contraceptives and doctor's appointments if they were legit, along with several other things.
mindlesstube yes for so many reasons
What is your plan then?

No.... It's true that most didn't have any money, but they still couldn't vote regardless.
To second +David Britt, woman were specifically excluded in some states in the US up until the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. Before that point they had full franchise in some states (mostly in the west) and limited to no franchise elsewhere.
In the UK, the picture is more simple;
1832 - Women were explicitly excluded from voting
1918 - Women over 30 allowed to vote
1928 - Women allowed to vote on the same terms as men
Women couldn't vote even if they were personally wealthy.

Very enlightening! Thanks for the video.

I literally have no idea why prostitution is illegal in most of the US, it's perfectly legal in UK and I have no idea why people have a problem with people exchanging sexual favours for money with their own personal choice.
Jan's a natural!
Prostitution is a good choice for a lot of women. It pays high, and there is plenty of work. It also helps men too, which makes a win win for all.
being a housewife is no different from prostitution, people talk like prostitution is the source of all evil things, they dare to insult these women thats why its sometimes not a good choice
Housewifes = Prostitution? Ha.
many women marry because they cant earn money or they dont wanna earn money. exchance of money and sex. the difference is marriage is legal and monogamist
There is a difference between being a prostitute and being a housewife. Being a prostitute only gives you money. Being a house wife gives you a guarantee of shelter, food and security.
