- I got a Nice day to film a Cooking Comparison on the Blackstone Vs Camp Chef. I enjoyed cooking these, It was a beautiful day out to film. (Sorry About my hand in the video, I have a New Camera 2020) ua-cam.com/users/IndianaDiy8...
I received this from Camp Chef for the comparison, thank you to them for the Opportunity to do the video and the grill.
I hope this helps some people decide between the two grills, it would still be hard for me to really say I like one or the other.

Truly helpful looking ahead to coming back again.
Hey thanks for the Feedback.
I still seasoned my camp chef when I got it. Even though it says preseasoned. I have no sticking at all
Still a good idea, I agree.
@mopjockey57 Old comment but that conola oil, aka "Canada Oil" is pretty much poison.. Save that stuff for the Jeeps power steering.
@mopjockey57 Canola oil is an oil created/developed by scientists in the 1970s (In Canada ofcourse).
Its mostly rapeseed oil, which is a toxic weed.
I have a Blackstone myself. That’s really what my channel is really about. BUT I have been curious about the Camp Chef for awhile now. You think it would be good to switch over?
It would be hard to say I like the Blackstone controls better, But there's some really nice features on Camp Chef.
I think all you need to do is adjust your tank regulator, put it on low and adjust the regulator to the spot you want it to be at on low. With that said, both are great grills. The deciding factor for us was portability. We are able to pack up the 90,000 BTU 3 burner stove in to a case and pack it with camping equipment.
what did you end up doing?
I believe the reason that the Blackstone doesn't run as hot as be Camp Chef is that the blackstones flame is more wide open to air. You're outside so you're going to get a little bit more wind. I camp chefs burners are more shielded
That's a very good point, I'm sure you're right considering how they are designed. I have had other comments about how they altered there camp chef or used adjustable regulator to have lower temps.
Great info !!!
Thanks glad you found it helpful.
Nice side by side comparison.
Thanks, Glad you liked it.
Thanks for taking time to do your video. One thing you might try, that I did on the Blackstone. Is to switch to an adjustable regulator on the propane tanks. It helped me get the Blackstone hotter when needed and should help the Camp Chef go lower when needed. Keep in mind this is a modification from factory and probably would void any warranty. Also, do this at your own risk. I'll subscribe and look forward to seeing more from you. Thanks, NextWithDave
Hey thanks, that's a good idea. I'll have look into it when I have some extra cash.
Also you should adjust the air shuttle on the burner. That helped me a lot.
I think I made the right choice, I bought the Blackstone, love it.
Glad you like it, I really enjoy using my grill.
Heat control is the most important thing.
I have the 36 in griddle in my back yard and the tailgater for camping. Love them both
The 36" Blackstone for sale at Wal-Mart has a textured top. I notice yours does not look like the current one for sale. Is that an older model?
There probably showing an unseasoned grill top. My Blackstone is a couple years old but I haven't seen any upgrades to grills they look the same.
Yours looks smoother than the one I looked at today.
Well, I know none of there flat top grills are preseasoned, so it should look like rough steel.
What size is the griddle surface on the Camp Chef ? Not square inches but length x width .
I think it was 32x 18. It has been a while and I gave the Camp Chef to family.
Blackstone at the top of me father's day list.
Well did you get one? If you did I hope you get to enjoy it. If not I guess you have to make a good purchase.
The camp chef seems to have some features the Blackstone doesn't have but to me the most important thing is heat control the Blackstone does that better it just cooks better and that's what I want
I like having that level of control when cooking or grilling.
Had the Blackstone first, got the camp chef. Now the Blackstone is a table on the patio for potting plants.
Wow, a potting table.
Reat demonstration. I listened to you tapping your flipper on the grills, 3 times, the Blackstone sounds like the grill is heavier gauge steel.
I agree it does sound thicker, I don't have a caliper to get an exact measurement, But If I did I would have put that info in video.
Camp Chef appears to be better made, Thanks wanted to see a side by side of these two.
Glad the video helped.
You are correct. The blackstone is junk. A couple friends have and nothing but problems.
The blackstone is designed to be portable which is why one shelf and folding legs. Take it on a trip or camping if you like. Or remove the oegs and mount it permanantly. I have the 36" blackstone and love it so much i am getting a smaller, more portable version for the camp.
I really enjoy using it, it has been one of my beat purchases.
I have the four burner membersmark flat top from Sam's Club. Love it.
Hey great as long as it works for you that's what matters.
The determining factor for me is where they are sold- look into it
Sorry for late reply, did you get one? I didn't find it hard to get my Blackstone. Camp Chef sent me the other grill.
Another video ID'd a problem with the Blackstone grill and it's grease catchment. At the very right end at the griddle wall, there's a gap between the wall and the grease channel. Grease can miss the channel and run down the leg of the griddle.
Put a skewer in it, easy fix. Grease will follow the skewer into the trap. Don't force a bunch of it at once.
Yeah, There's always the one little detail they seem to miss.
What? I haven’t had any go anywhere but the catcher.
Which one would you recommend for Bacon Wrapped hot dogs(for a lot of people)?
Blackstone is what I would suggest.
I have the same problem with high heat on the 900 model. Even on low it gets over 400F (confirmed with a surface thermometer). I've been emailing Camp Chef to try to get them to fix this design flaw.
I figured I wasn't the only one to have that problem.
why not just use the propane tank to regulate the gas/heat? Not the right way but its a solution.
Tried regulating the tank... Didn't work
I think thats by design so the flame doesn't extinguish easily. You'll have to turn the tank knob a lot to slow the fuel down. Try it from closed and then 1/4 turn open to start off with. Open gradually and try relighting if necessary. See if you notice a difference in flame height. I also can't help but think the regulator plays an important roll in it. I found some adjustable ones on Amazon. Here is the link.
www.amazon.com/Propane-Regulator-Adjustable-Foot-0-20/dp/B00N3FECZS Let me know what you think, hope this helps jj
Thank you for posting this. I just wish they had a 36" indoor grill.
Hey no problem glad to help. Well I guess thats just the way they wanted to make the grill but hard to say, But the 36 inch is nice.
I have the Blackstone and had to change to a better gas line. It wouldn't be consistent in it's heat most times very low. Yes I did do the resetting they recommend . Still didn't work also the legs do not want to tighten up and seem flimsy . And hate the grease tray.
Interesting I wondered about the Gas Line but I left it alone. I agree with you about the legs and grease tray.
Do the legs on the Camp Chef fold up? The Blackstone is easy to pack up and take on the road.
No, the Camp Chef don't fold, I agree that one nice thing about Blackstone.
Look into the Blackstone Tailgater. It has both a griddle and grill. I have one for camping and it has worked out great
How do you season that flat grill? Just oil it up and put it on high for like 10-15 minutes? Anyone?
Blackstone has a really good seasoning video on their UA-cam page.
I'm definitely buying one within the month, I can't find a camp chef in my town but wal mart here does have a Blackstone. I can't decide after watching your videos which one is best. What do you think is best bang for my buck?
I really enjoy the Blackstone, I like the control adjustability. It would be hard for me to choose too but I really the Blackstone.
Thanks man!
Blue Rhino from Lowe's
Blackstone for streight out of box use. Better heating control from what I have been reading. I haven't purchased one yet but I will soon.
and you ended up getting?
Is it me or is the Blackstone griddle thicker? The sound on each griddle when you clean the spatula sound different. The Camp Chef sounds thinner. Just curious, I'm considering on of these.
Well, the rolled steel is durable. Plus there welds on the back for channels of heat. But out of the two Blackstone was heavier top to me.
Your choice in end but I really like my Blackstone, Camp Chef is good too.
The camp chef fg600 is cold rolled steel and has a much better diffuser design on the bottom of the griddle.
What is the size of the Camp Chef? I’m looking for a 28”
Well the camp chef 475 is exactly 28” but it’s only a 3 burner, the one in my video it the camp chef 600 flat top grill.
if you were using as a food vendor cooking for customers would you have a preferance? i have a food cart with a 36" griddle attatched but i am looking into expanding my business instead of spending thousands of dollars on a second cart i am thinking about the blackstone and the camp chef. i make alot of cheese steaks hotdogs italian sausage kielbasa bacon cheese burgers. thank you merry christmas and happy new year!!
David...so what did you decide?
Sounds good. Sorry for late reply.
im curious too.
Still can't decide. So frustrating! Here in Canada the Blackstone is $521 vs $707 for the Camp Chef 600. The new rear grease management system on the Blackstone is better than the old front system (IMHO). There are pros and cons to each and I just can't make up my mind. I also want to convert mine to natural gas. Blackstone sells the natural gas valve orifices, but Camp Chef you have to drill out the existing orifices.
I'm sorry I didn't replay sooner, Did you make a decision ? I would buy the black stone so its easier for your hook up.
you only needed on burner on the camp chef running. ran on medium too high for the burgers then the sausage and veggies over on the cooler side. you need to learn your heat zones on a flat top. they both cook! just the camp chef is made far better quality
Thanks for the tips!
Far better how lol? I have a blackstone and it’s build like a tank. Solid and cooks well.
Does the pilot stay lit in the wind on em .
Nope, electric ignition only. No pilot light.
Blacktone isn't the best built flat top grill by a long shot, but it's the cheapest, thus it's popularity.
It's true that there are other brands but the time this is what I had. I've heard of the blue rhino brand flat top grill but I'm not for sure what other brands would be out there.
and the better one is?
Just because it’s cheaper than the camp chef doesn’t mean it’s cheap. It’s barely any cheaper at all.
I have the Blackstone, and my dad bought the camp chef...
There's no comparison... The camp chef blows my Blackstone out of the water.
I'll be upgrading to the camp chef before summer is here.
I do like my Blackstone as well, They both are nice but my favorite is the Blackstone.
How does it “blow” it out of the water? Doesn’t make much sense
I would take the Blackstone over the camp chef just because if the better ability to control the temp. Everything else is just frills. I do have a camp chef explorer and the full sized pro griddle top so I have no axe to grind but the temp controls on that are poor as well.
Do the knobs on the Camp Chef get untouchable after a short period of use? I have a ProX90 and they do get HOT, hence a glove use, just wondering if others had same issue and possible solutions!>
I never noticed that issue.
True!
How much propane will they use?
Depends on how high flame, and how long your cooking. Hard to give estimate..
I have a 36-inch Blackstone and I only can get about two or three dinners cooked on it does that sound about right or do you think something's wrong with it
It's all about heat control for me.
Yes that makes a big difference.
A true comparison would use an IR gun to compare surface heat. Distance between burners and griddle the same between the two? How do they light? Cost? Accessories?
Hey, Thanks for the feedback I was trying to do this on a budget and I didn't have the extra money to buy a lot of the stuff.
wanted to do a basic honest comparison without a lot of extras and I was trying to keep the video short.
I'm sorry... I've watched both videos you've done because I've been considering a flat top grill, and really even with both videos theres not a lot of helpful information... Other comments are correct. Whats the difference in cooking surface thickness/gauge? Hows heat retention with adding food? You could have a laser thermometer and put both grills on low, show temps, change to medium and show, change to high and show. Show us the grease dripping... Showing some hotdogs and burgers etc sitting on a grill doesnt do anything for helping people... Looking for facts and details, not generic opinions about "if I were to buy one off the shelf, it would be a toss up..." :)
Sorry I'm on a budget, I own the Blackstone the Camp Chef was sent to me for free for the video. They wanted a overall comparison, I don't have the money for a laser temp gun and a caliper to measure material thickness.
Chris Tufano believe me, this video has all the info you need. Both units are similar, but the Champ Chef has no temp control. Go with the Blackstone!
already got one, 36" :)
Indiana DIY Laser temp gun is $15... That's what I use.
Cool, I have found some on Amazon since I did the video.
Got me the blue rhino. The shelves fold up over the top of the griddle to protect it. And on the right side it has a really hot searing burner. I like it better than both of these!
Cool, glad to hear that. I tried contacting them about doing a review comparison never heard anything.
Frankly you showed two grilles with no definite opinion, what was the point of posting it.
Overall review, was requested on both grills.
I own a Blackstone for the last 5 years and luv it best cooking thing my wife ever bought me. I love so much I bought 1 to leave at my parents because I was tired of lugging mine over there all the time.
I'm happy with my Blackstone.
Blackstone is the best
I am certainly happy with my Blackstone.
The blk stone is better quality just like a real commercial griddle and it cooks way better food so checkout the popularity and no complaints
I agree. I do like my Blackstone Allot.
You must be talking about an older camp chef version as the fg600 is far superior in construction than the Blackstone... just check out every other video comparison on UA-cam. I understand Campchef updated their griddle now outclasses the Blackstone.
The camp chef that is in my video was sent directly to me from camp chef factory direct for the review of the video that's their current model.
Which grill top is heavier? The Camp chef has a cast iron plate and a steel frame attached to the underside, so I believe everyone I have seen comment on it says the grill is better quality in the Camp Chef. Overall weight is higher on the CC too 144 vs 120
Not much of a comparison honestly. But good effort
Thanks for the feedback.
@@IndianaDiy ill give you this feed back talk about the way it cooks hot, medium, high! How both temps compare to one another. How is the metal is it cheap good quality ? Etc etc etc.
