  • After checking out the Sire Larry Carlton S7 I decided to take a look at the Sire S3 - a more affordable super strat with a fantastic spec. If you can forgo locking tuners, or if you're not a fan of a roasted maple neck with gloss fretboard, the S3 may be the guitar for you!

    I have a harley benton fusion tele in the HH config, and i was looking at adding the S3 to my collection for some strat tones. They are hard to find where I live (Canada), so I appreciate the review. With guitars in this price range it is nice to be able to test it in person for QC issues before buying

      The Fusion-T is a great guitar, too! In terms of Sire QC, I’ve played four Sire guitars (three S7, one S3) - two of the S7 were great, the S3 is great, but one of the S7 was absolutely terrible and plagued with issues - the bad S7 was a B-Stock item though so this could have something to do with it.
      Overall, though, Sire has a LOT of good reviews and QC seems to be good more often than not! I’m super happy with the S3.

      I bought a black Sire S3 two weeks ago. I love it. It is as great sounding as any Fender on the market.

    I own fender strat player. I don't know, i just like sound of this guitar, sounds warmer and fuller, good for jazz and slow rock, because the Alnico pickup on my strat is very bright. Anyway you play really good

    The Sire S7, I have one, has no real coil split for the humbucker. It does have a functioning coil split in position 2 where the mid and inner bridge coil windings are used as a single coil combination. But that is also the only split option. When I listen to your video I think the same principle has been applied to the S3. The S7 has full size potentiometers, no brand, I wonder if this is also the case with the S3? The pickups sound distinctly different compared to the S7. But that also plays into the sound of the video. Looking forward to a possible sequel. Good luck!

      It seems that Sire have started fitting the newer S7s with coil split on the humbucker ( ua-cam.com/video/ReJdKkoN7fU/v-deo.html ) As mentioned below, the S3 pickups are ceramic, compared to the S7s Alnico pickups.
      Thanks for the kind words, and for the input! Thank you 👍

    I believe the pickups are ceramic on the S3 as opposed to alnico on the S7. Cheaper(?) but in my opinion not inferior. I actually prefer the slightly darker sound.

      Thanks for the info! Personally I preferred the sound of the S7 pickups, but as you say, could just come down to personal taste! I really like the sound of the humbucker in the S3 actually!

    Im thinking whether this or the squier classic vibe would get me closer to a strat sound... Confused on what to get..?

      Both do the strat sound and both are good guitars. Best bet would be to try both out if you can and choose which you prefer.

      Why don't u checkout also the new Sterling CT50 Cutlass Plus or even the older version Sterling CT50 Cutlass (they have the SSS pu or the HSS pu....i have the older version Sterling CT50 Cutlass which i have been using for the past 4 years & are loving it but before that, i use to have the Fender Strat American Professional HSS v1 but after a year i sold it off cause i just didn't like how that Fender Strat sounds...). Anyway, just my 2 cents...

    Are the tuners staggered as it doesn’t have a string tree so curious to know how they have managed to miss of a string tree

    • @DomHawthorn
      @DomHawthorn  Рік тому +2

      Good question, I should’ve mentioned this in the video! The tuners are not staggered on the S3, so the break angle of the B and e string is a little shallow - although I haven’t noticed it causing any issues so far.
      Easily remedied by adding a set of locking staggered tuners though, which is what I will be doing.

      @@DomHawthorn thanks for the reply and it’s odd they haven’t included one but as you said if it still plays nice then shouldn’t matter to much, staggered tuners or a string tree added should sort it thank you

    How's this compare to a Squier Classic Vibe in your opinion (aside from the worse pickups)?

    • @DomHawthorn
      @DomHawthorn  Рік тому +1

      Personally I would choose the S3 over the classic vibe, but it comes down to preference really. The trem on the S3 is really nice and has a full size steel sustain block. The S3 has the rolled fingerboard edges too which are really nice. The S3 has medium jumbo frets while the classic vibe have narrow tall frets. Both guitars are nice though, and both can be really nice with some modifications.

    When sweetwater gets in these S3 sires again. I will get 1 in sunburst color. You can't buy to many strat style guitars at this price with Rosewood boards.
