I have learned a lot from your videos. I have a 2006 Lexus RX330 that has the same type thermostat issues. I ask a local shop to price changing the thermostat and they quoted approximately $1100. They also stated a complete water pump change out would also be required when changing the stat. I ask them why since the water pump is on the opposite side of the engine. No comment. Hats off to you. Since then I've been changing my on oil/filter. Changed brakes, both front and back, hopefully plan to change the transmission filter and fluid soon. After watching this one video 3 times I'm starting to believe I can do it. Thanks and God bless you and your family.

the common thermostat procedure I was always taught was to orient the "jiggle" valve so that it's the highest point in the cooling system, of course that can be affected by the orientation of the engine itself (depending on models that use the same engine). Would this be consider bad advice to pass on?

    • @johnwhitehead8006
      @johnwhitehead8006 Рік тому +2

I'm guessing this small opening (valve) allows any air bubbles to pass through rather than building up an air pocket in the thermostat housing. An air pocket would slow down the thermostats ability to sense coolant temperature changes.

    Sir,
I have a 2007 Carolla with just over 110,000 miles on it that I bought from my mother (the first owner). It is very well taken care of and I intend to continue this care on my own.
I humbly request a coolant flush video. My local shop (not known to be the most honest) states my water pump is leaking. I plan to change out the pump, hoses, thermostat (w/housing) and flush the entire system with cleaner, by myself. I want to do it right and I love your videos, so I ask you for some tips.
Thank you for your help and amazing videos!

Hey AMD any idea why about 4 years ago I saw that the rack ends in my parent's 06 Sienna were leaking as the inner tie rod boots were oily and split. Just to try it, I flushed out the generic clear brown power steering fluid that was in there and put in the "recommended" Dexron fluid? I then replaced the split boot ends and ever since the boots have stayed dry and it appears the leaks have STOPPED. I've always thought it was a very curious thing. 🤔

Any time I do a timing belt and water pump I also change the thermostat. Coolant is already out to do the pump and with the miles on the vehicle it just makes sense. On some Toyota's you have to remove the thermostat to change the pump.

I recently did this same job on my RX300. Was only getting to 160. Almost the same exact procedure, except mine has a metal split pipe where the plastic one is. I ordered the gasket that goes there, but I never needed to separate the tube. I have it if it ever leaks, but I figured, why replace it if it's working correctly now. I didn't have to remove it, so I didn't. I see why they went with a solid plastic pipe in the newer 3MZ. Less parts = better. After replacing it with and OEM thermostat, I was amazed at the accuracy of the temperature. It was an 80C thermostat, and it reported exactly 179.6 degrees F after I checked to see if it was working correctly. It does warm up more than that after the radiator reaches equilibrium, but it still amazes me at the accuracy of it.

I have to imaging the WORST thing about being a mechanic is that constant intangible factor during the actual repair work where the scope of work suddenly expands because of the degraded condition of already-impossible-to-access parts. You KNOW what the problem is, you know how the repair is SUPPOSED to be done, but suddenly the work required goes up with the least-fun, aggravating work of trying to unlock rusted bolts, replace brittle plastic connectors that broke and won't refasten, etc. I'm not mechanically inclined to begin with but this is what keeps me from attempting getting into even the basics.

The plastic pipe right after the thermostat is commonly to suddenly broke and cause overheating from coolant lost. It is a good idea to replace that pipe regularly. 100-150k miles interval is about a good interval. I had found 5 cases in my city alone in the past 3 years.

Also in states with safety inspections, you do have to replace a leaking rack and pinion. I replaced mine last year in 2021. I went with Detroit Axle parts.
What trim was that? It looks like XLE, due to wood trim, but had cloth seats. And what kinda tires is the customer running? I run Michelin Defenders on mine. Does his power doors still work?

depends what part of Canada. Here in Ontario -4C is cold we spend most our winter around there. Occasionally we can get to -20 or so.. but only for a day or two. Out west, Calgary for example can get much colder. Or if your in Vancouver BC. the temp averages 10 C in the winter. On the other hand. Places like Fargo USA can get to -60 with 20 feet of snow per year. Can't understand why Americans thing Canada has snow. No where in Canada do we get 20 Feet per year.

I don't know why you make me smile so much, but you do. Maybe it's your clear policy on cans of worms, maybe it's on fancy haircut, maybe it's your seeming reluctance to plug products even when you like them. In any case, I look forward to your videos. I'm not a huge car guy, but your videos seem to be made for everyone. Well done, and thanks!

My last car stopped putting out heat. Mechanic thought it was a thermostat, it was a leaking coolant hose.
It seems that Toyota always puts things that commonly need to be replaced in the most ridiculous position. Is there some rule at Toyota to help pad billed mechanic hours?

SnapOn makes a coolant replacement tool that will let you replace parts without draining coolant.

I'm very glad that I don't live in the rust belt. A lot of work just to get to the thermostat. Good job as always

Great videos, no flash, no excitement, just solid knowledge, attention to detail, and the love for what he does. The best you can wish for. I am learning from these videos as I am considering a Toyota for my next car.
