    Daily Reminder: You make sure, that your song is phenomenal. Put it out there in the wild. If people love it organically then push it with ads. Your song needs to be phenomenal before you start marketing. I'm dead serious.

      @@jujment699nah he's actually right. It's better to promote a song that is already getting traction organically, even if it's just a little bit. If you aren't able to generate any plays organically or enough to make a decision on which song to promote, then throwing a bunch of money into ads won't help you either. It'll get you a spike in streams sure but you're going to just be losing money just to say "he i got tens of thousands of streams" or "we get a million streams" (video says they spent around $5000 on ads alone.... 1 million stream on spotify pays out around $4000, and we aren't even talking about the added production, licensing and distribution costs)

    Great video! I have worked with major labels as a graphic designer and they have roughly the same strategies. Unfortunately, if you are a smaller artist, there is mostly a lot of weight on the paid promotion side.

      Absolutely, which makes sense, everybody has to pay to be seen. As an indie artist, I think its best if you try and learn to do most things yourself (recording, production, mixing) because it allows to A. control your sound B. make savings in areas that allow you to spend more on the marketing. it takes time though, Rome wasnt built in a day.

    This is a great video, but I'm wondering two things:
    - if you release instrumental music, what kind of content can you create for social media ? There's not really any lip sync there, and the story is more inside the listener's head than anything else.
    - If you make a music video, would it be better to try and redirect listeners to it or to spotify ?

Just be very meticulous about which contacts you choose to pitch to (which is true globally with other promo services). Don't jump over that step too quickly.

    Hey Andrew, what would you suggest for a Rock band like us? Because the artists that our music is similar to are all from the early 70s & the whole 90s era, meaning they're no longer active. The only famous Rock band right now is Greta Van Fleet and our music isn't completely similar to them, although we do reckon that GVF fans might be interested in our music too. How should we target or find our audience?

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  Рік тому +1

      In terms of ads, it doesn't matter if the artist is active or not because you're targeting fans of that artist. The Beatles has a massive targetable audience and they haven't been active the entire time the internet has existed.

And they are basically irrelevant on spotify compared to their IG for example. It often seems to not translate. What if you spent hundreds of hours getting your IG to lets say 20k followers, to only get 50 plays on your new single from them?

    How would you distribute your 500 budget now considering TikTok is currently the largest social media app? They also award and encourage content creators with money and new tools.

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  Рік тому

      I'd spend all $500 in Meta ads. No UA-cam ads, TikTok ads or playlisting. The TikTok ads platform is kind of a mess right now, very limiting targeting options and very limited country selections.
      TikTok actually isn't the largest social media app. UA-cam, Instagram and Facebook beat them in total users. Also amongst Gen-Z the top platform is UA-cam followed by Instagram and then TikTok. You can see the breakdown here: ua-cam.com/video/ytT4fFd48QE/v-deo.html
      However i'd still definitely post content on TIkTok, in addition to Instagram, UA-cam, Facebook etc. TikTok or Instagram are usually artist's first choice as their main platform they'll post several times a week to. Then the rest they update at a less frequent basis.

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  Рік тому +3

      I've never licensed beats so i'm not sure the exact terms, but i'd guess you could re-up your license if you surpass the allowed views. So if you paid $100 for the basic license and the song is going to have more traction than the license allows, go back to the producer and upgrade to the $250 license that covers the next tier of streams / views.

      It's definitely doable with 100$ but it might not be enough to get the big push for algorithmic plays. If budgeting is an issue, I'd recommend creating enough buzz organically through reels/tiktok and then running ads to continue the momentum created with that :) also UA-cam ads are an option as well and work perfect for music videos!

    Hi Andrew, I had a question seperate from the topic of the video. Did you know that if you release a collaboration track with another artist on DistroKid it will take up an additional artist slot on your plan? If you put out 12 songs in collaboration over a year you would have to pay for a plan that allows 12 artists under that plan. Do you have recommendations on other distributors to consider?

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  Рік тому

      So I've heard that DistroKid has some type of plan extension to account for artists that do a lot of collabs, but you'd have to contact support to ask about it. Alternatively you could use something like Amuse that isn't based around artist slots.

    Hey Andrew! I‘ve got a question, I haven’t released any songs on my Spotify in a few months, I currently have 2 songs, one has been marketed a little but the second one hasn’t been marketed at all and has very little streams. I think that song has most potential out of the two so do you think it’s a good idea if I delete it from Spotify and re-release it with a solid marketing plan this time? Or should I just let it be nothing and move on to the next song?

      if u do that spotify can get suspicious of stream farming. ur never supposed to “re release” the same song unless you’re using ISRC.

      @@karlosmartos4646 Yeah for some reason I assumed that if you didn't begin marketing from the moment the song released, it wouldn't be nearly as effective, I guess that's not the case haha

    For facebook ads why do you use the engagement objective to drive traffic? Would the campaign not be more optimised if you chose Traffic as the objective?

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  Рік тому

      The traffic objective doesn't give you conversions as a metric, and you really want to use pixel conversions here.

    If the goal is overall streams and conversion ads weed out bots why shouldn’t we use India and the Philippines they generate huge streams and conversion almost garuntee real listens?

  • @jasonward4982

    It appear that for you to even break even on your ad spend, you need 300-500 streams for every dollar your spend.
    So the question becomes, are we just paying for a vanity metric, or is there actually a way to make a return on your investment?

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  11 місяців тому

      You can have songs that profit on the short term (6-12 months), you can have songs that profit on the medium term (1-3 years) and you can have songs that profit on the longer term (3+ years). The longer term is much more likely, because the vast majority of streams happen after the campaign is over.
      Many songs will lose money. As a result I recommend thinking of this as a fan acquisition tool that compounds over time. If you spend $1k and make back $500 over the next few years, you've recovered half your investment and lost money. However, you also gained X amount of followers on social media, X amount of followers on DSP's, and gained a lot of fans that will listen to future releases.
      Streaming as a whole is a fan acquisition tool. This is the top of your funnel. The other aspects of your music (merch, Patreon, touring, sync etc) will typically be what brings in the most money.

      Facebook is super cautious with people that have new accounts. To them it looks sketch if you open up a person FB and immediately go to make ads. You’ll have to go through the appeal process and hope for the best unfortunately. Good luck!

      It can totally work, i've had a few campaigns around $0.50 per conversion in the USA which is decent. Its comparable to FB ads. However the targeting is quite rough and they only have a few countries right now.
      My guess is that in a year it will be a much closer platform. Its rapidly improving.
