I've been watching LockPickingLawyer for months now and have waited for an explanation of what he means by "false set", "counter-rotation", a "click", etc. I have figured some of it out via context clues, but this video put it together very clearly! Very well done!
Been watching lockpicking vids for a year and thinking of joining the hobby. Despite the excellent descriptions, cutaway demonstrations and animations by other UA-camrs this is far & away the best explanation of security pins I've ever seen. Thanks so much!
100% agree. Amazing video. I have never seen anything like this. Amazing representation of how to pick security pins. Thank you for the video. Definitely subscribing.
Hello Shed. I,m 90 long retired. Spent 15 years or so as a hobbyist. Tons of fun. But as i look back I never saw a more clever, and instructive teaching device as I have, just now, with Parts 1-2-3 and more. Wow---double wow.
I'm in the same boat. I couldn't pick a lock to save my life, and I don't really feel the need to change that, and yet i still watch every single one of lpl's videos. I swear it's addicting.
Watching vids from good pickers like LPL and others will convince you that locks are useless... Until you try for yourself and you realise just how easy those pickers make it look. Locks with plain pins fly open after a little practice (cough couch master Lock) but security pins increase the difficulty by a factor of 10. Fantastic video, I'm currently stuck on a Lockwood lock, it keeps dropping into a deep false set. Your video has confirmed to me it has spool pins, I might give it another go, thanks.
As a locksmith, this is the best straightforward and to the point method I've ever seen, congratulations. This is excellent for training a new tech or office personnel. Great way to present the information.
I've watched hundreds of videos from Bosnian Bill and the lock picking lawyer who are such experts and use this terminology. They have never explained and I have never figured out what they're talking about when they refer to false sets etc, with these various types of pens. This video is a gold mine of knowledge and explanation
It’s funny, the little subcultures UA-cam’s algorithm will keep feeding you. I’m not into lock picking at all, per se, but I love precise, intricate machinery. A lock is straightforward in purpose, and very simple in principle, but I love seeing how incredibly clever lock-makers can get with it. Lock-picking, unlike any other precision-machining field, clearly demonstrates the value of *precision machining* and how 3rd-party (ideally “white-hat”) outside-the-box thinking is a pure illustration of the divorce between *intended purpose* in machinery and the extremes of the *real-word* usage space. Makes me want to build a clock or something.
I kind of agree with you (although I do actually enjoy the lock-picking for its own sake as well). You HAVE to watch this video if you really appreciate such things, and if you get a kick out of it and hadn't seen it before, please let me know in a reply! ua-cam.com/video/lmxLAZZ2fhM/v-deo.html
@@TheBooklyBreakdown I saw this comment and thought it may be a Rickroll, however I was EXTREMELY surprised and ended up loving the video. What spectacular engineering, I didn't know such things existed. Thanks for sharing!
Pete Restall i never knew you could save vids as favourites shall do right away. fantastic work of enginering in making it all to even down to the spring tension working im in total admoration of your work sir.
I have zero intention of picking a lock but am fascinated with the mechanics of them and have been watching a number of videos and this answered a lot of questions. Great video and excellent teaching aid.
This isnt an exaggeration, not only for regular lock picking, but as well as security pins. This is by far the BEST video explaining the pins and how to pick them. I try to explain the shear line and pins and what not to friends and they have no clue what I'm talking about. If you use reddit, please post this to r/lockpicking, they'll love it!
Thank you for this very good demo of the different pins.Seeing that spool type cock to one side, the false sets and counter rotation were more clearly demoed than on any other channel.Very helpful indeed. The best I have seen!
Great description of how security pins work. The visuals make it much easier to understand. I hope that some of the more well-known UA-camrs like BB or LPL send people your way.
Great video! I kinda sorta figured out how security pins worked by looking at their shapes and trying to visualise how they would behave around the shear line in a chamber under tension, but this demonstration makes it super clear and easy to understand. Thanks!
This is absolutely brilliant! I've not seen a working model like this. This is perfect for experimenting with ratios and new designs. You are my actual hero right now. Thank you so much. It's such a simple idea. I can't believe I haven't seen it before.
For complicated challenge locks you could even have multiple of these models side by side, all rotating in sync, to test gatekeeper or trap pin ideas. I am totally thrilled about this. Anyone with a 3d printer could use those tolerances to create amazing, fast prototypes at model size before scaling down to do the dirty work with the real lock.
Great job you done here! Thank you very much. I have a little knowledge and experience in lock picking, but I was having some trouble to figure out how a false set could be of any help during picking while watching videos from other channels. Then I find this and both the false set and the slight counter rotation makes sense after all.
This is a genius way of illustrating security pins. I’m not sure if you made the pieces and board yourself, but they make the explanation so much easier to understand than anything else I’ve seen. I’m learning to locksmith, and I will definitely be using this video as a reference multiple times.
Incredibly simple, pedagogical and straigt to the point. It looks like a good way to start as a beginner when you begin to pick basic types of lock to gain that kind of feeling for the pins and what kind of problems they can cause when they´ve been upgraded with security-pins.
Damn dude, excellent video. Finally someone explains the differences between pin types and what that means for picking and security. The added info on core undercutting and serrations was a great addition.. Love the mock up too. Welll done!!!
I don't know why YT suddenly thought everyone needed to be fed lockpicking videos. But I'm not complaining. Flawlessly explained. 10/10 would pick (to watch) again.
Hey thank you so much. I'm new to the hobby and have been watching videos, all that I could find on security pins and nothing compares to this. Fantastic visuals.
This has to be hands down one of the best videos I've seen explaining security pins and how they interfere with the pick. For some reason one day UA-cam decided I should become a lockpicker. I've been watching video for about 6 months, and I'm starting to think seriously about making a start. I was hoping to get lots of used locks for practise from ebay like lockpickinglawyer used. Unfortunately UK ebay seems a little sparse.
This is by far the best explanation of this I have found. I’m really new to lock picking and I kept hearing these terms, but had no real idea what they meant! Thank you so much!! Subscribed!
This is surprisingly informative. Your wooden model actually did wonders in helping me visualize it and better understand the challenges lockpickers I watch are dealing with. I never really understood security pins until now. Thanks for the upload ^^
Very simple but effective explanation. Thank you. If more school teachers used your methods of simplifying a complex subject kids would learn so much better 👍
This an awesome video. So clear and informative. you have explained how the different pin types and and core manipulations could work together too. This really gets the brain racing. Great stuff...
Thank you! This is the kind of technical info that separate the pros from everyone else! I’ve always said you can spot a pro because they make it look easy!
This is an excellent video, combining the verbal explanation with the visual representation of the whole process.! From someone who has only ever mastered picking his nose, I really would like to try picking a lock using this technique. Seriously though, great video.
Very interesting. This visual replica really helps to see what is actually going on inside the lock. Also helps with knowing the terminology as picking progresses. Thanks!
Hi. I've been watching various lock picking videos for about 6 months now (casual curiosity) and hear talk of spool and serrated pins. I can tell what they look like but never really knew exactly how they interacted with the functionality of the lock. Thanks for taking the time to make this video (and the example pieces - looks like a few days of time went into it). I now have a better understanding of the different types of pins. Your explanation was clear and the visual pieces physically interacting (instead of a computer animation) were great. Thanks! Will subscribe.
You have explained perfectly and ingeniously how lock picking works. Seen lots of by LPL and others butntjey don't explain it like this. Perfect thank you. This will help a lot
Interesting information, well presented, And using an easy to understand visual aid......... This guy reminds me so much of my old science teacher. :) I've been messing about with lock picks for a few of months now, and I've come across a fair few locks that have security pins fitted. Usually I can tell that there's something unexpected going on with a particular pin, But I didn't fully understand how I was ment to tell what type of security pin I was dealing with. Usually I'd just manipulate the pin while varying my force on the tensioner bar. Eventually I usually manage to pop the lock by doing this, But sometimes I get so frustrated with it that I give up on it and move onto another lock. After watching this I feel I've got a much better chance of being able to tell what I'm up against next time......... Thanks for taking the time to explain this so clearly Pete. (Liked/subscribed based purely on this one video. Now I'm off to have a look at what else you've uploaded. :) )
Excellent vid. Best visualisation of a lock design I’ve seen. Do you have plans so your viewers can make their own version. Would be a great 3D printing project

We are both here for literally the same reasons. Counter-rotation was one of the few that I could never figure out what he meant. Now, I do.
I'm here too, for the same reasons! This really clears things up!
