England prepare for Euro '96

- A look-ahead to hosts England kicking-off Euro '96, after a troubled trip to the Far East. Includes interviews with England players and a live interview with Terry Venables by Des Lynam. This was broadcast the day before England began the tournament with a 1-1 draw with Switzerland at Wembley.
England were not to shabby to be honest they probably had the greatest tournament win I'd seen in my lifetime with the 4-1 victory against holland.
Terry Venables is massively underrated.

Venables was a really good manager.
Was a very special tournament - not the best quality overall but it's definitely the best team/squad England have had in my lifetime. Amazing to think the four strikers in the team were Shearer, Sheringham, Fowler and Ferdinand. Roy Hodgson would kill for just one of them today!
Great shame Venables didn't stay for another tournament. He would surely have gone as far as Hoddle did at France 98, possibly as a more experienced coach he might have gone further. The job did come too early for Hoddle and I think he would probably admit that today.

What Zander said is generally true. England had one really good performance in this tournament, against Holland. They played poorly against Switzerland and Scotland, rescued by a Seaman penalty save and Gascoigne's genius in the latter. Against Spain they were outplayed and sneaked through on penalties. The only point I disagree on is that Germany were deserved victors in the semi, it was a pretty even match with no obvious standout winner. It was not a vintage German team by any means.
Germany had the quality of Sammer controlling the rhythm of the team from sweeper though, plus the likes of Meuller and Klinsmann.
I remember I loved watching Sammer in that tournament, it was a really sophisticated type of football with him frequently going on driving runs forward and spraying the ball about.
Apart from Ruud Gullit at Chelsea, and Mark Wright at Liverpool, English defenses were all 4 4 2 at the time.
England had the better chances. 9/10 times the Gazza tap in wouldve gone in.

Not massively! They drew with Switzerland and Spain were robbed of a win in the quarters. Germany were deserved winners in the semis, although it was a good game between the two. You just like the nostalgia but in reality England were never THAT great.
They were good enough to win it...look at Portugal and Greece 🤢 subsequently
Robbed? How? Germany definitely werent deserved winners. I think youre mixed up with Italia 90.
Give credit when it is due accept it that England played good in this tournament yes England get lucky against Spain but England played the best football in this tournament and Germany got lucky in the semi's.
They should shoot a video about Gascoignes golden goal miss against Germany. That alone was worth a whole documentary series.
