While I live in the mountains, I don't normally become involved in such intense off-road efforts your business has seemed to have evolved into. However, I am keenly aware of your unique abilities. You are certainly an expert at your unique talents. You have my profound respect.
Lol they tried that with Lady. I thought it would be an awesome idea until I see what came from it. The first thing she did was rake the camera on the bumper to knock it off. They tried again and got something....it'd be too generous to call it footage though. They shared about 10 seconds of it, I think mostly to show how completely unusable it was. With all the jostling and bouncing around you couldn't really see anything at all.
I love to see that Lizzy is becoming so trusted to basically be in charge on her own rescues. She has come so far since I started watching this channel.
Had no doubts. Lizzy is bold enough to get the job done, but smart enough to keep herself out of trouble. She is the result of great parenting and a strong mentor who challenges her and gives her opportunities to grow. It also does not hurt that Tom is the voice of reason. Nice Job as always.

Biggest lesson for the Bronco guy is not to wheel alone. especially when you are new to it. At least he was smart enough to stop and ask for help before he was actually in real trouble.

What folks dont realize is a handful of these incidents are why areas get closed down. Then nobody, even the responsible folks, can enjoy these public lands. The individual may think, "It's just me, it doesn't matter" but what they don't realize is there are a dozen or dozens of other people that do the same thing. It's not the person, it's the group. This applies to trash, littering, peeing/pooing in nature, your dog's crap, etc. One or two people probably don't matter but dozens or thousands absolutely matter.
For the newer 4Runners, you need to shut off TRACTION CONTROL (TRAC) and VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL (VSC) otherwise the truck fights you in the snow. You can switch the Multi-terrain Selector to mud and sand mode. This is the least invasive and allows the most slippage of the system but the computer still takes control.
@Saeglopur89 how so? Never heard of cold causing issue later in life. You would think Canadians or Alaskan would only live to 45 if that was the case.
Jonah does an excellent job videoing the recoveries. Never a bad viewing angle. My hats off toe the Bronco owner. As Dirty Harry once said, ‘A man’s got to know his limitations’. Better to ask for help as opposed to wadding the Bronco up down the side of the canyon. With experience he’ll get better.
If the twitching from the 4runner is coming from the tires, it's most likely the traction control, specifically VSC and ATRAC. There's a button to turn it off. All +03 4runners and +05 Tacoma will have the button. You should experiment with it in Tucker's 4runner so you know how to use it in your next recovery.
Thanks for the positive comments on the Freightliner M2. I was Engineering project leader on the creation of it in 1999. We worked hard to create a truck with the customer first. It has been over 20 years and it is still the best selling medium duty truck.
As a techy type, let me congratulate the unsung Engineer. You guys cop a lot of flack for the "what MORON put this nut under this massive piece of steel", but the functional cars, planes, bridges, skyscrapers.... they keep coming and sewerage that WORKS??? Dammit. Well done, Sir.

@@jenniferwhitewolf3784 Yes, designed in Portland in the late 90s introduced about 2000. It had has had a run of over 20 years and still the leading seller in the medium duty market.Many upgrades in powertrain and electronics, but the appearance has not been changed it is it remains current.
@@spdergod There are lots of reasons why things are the way they are. On a grand scale, consider that this model series has to be able to be configured as a straight truck or tractor, accommodate engines from 6L to 12L, satisfy the needs to operate as ambulance, fire truck all the way to farm truck or U-Haul, and do it from 30 below zero in Canada to 125 in Arizona. Then assemble and deliver about 500 of them per day with the average workers and deliver top quality. Many things may not make sense in a particular application. That said, not all engineers are stellar, so some silly things always get by. It’s always great to see if we hit the target for the end users.
The pair of them are like Anti Matt's.. She can weld better and follow directions better than Matt.. TomTom can actually measure and do detailed designs from an engineer drawing and has safety skills. Basically; they are his alter ego duo!

Same here. When I got to meet the MORR crew in Pigeon Forge TN I told Matt through tears.... "You're not just pulling jeeps out of holes, you're pulling a lot of people out of a lot of places that they don't want to be in right now. And that means a lot to us, it means a lot to me." This channel definitely helps with depression for some reason and it's a Godsend.
I found Matt’s videos while I was seriously sick with COVID a couple months after lockdown started. Back then it was just the Banana. His videos got me through that month from hell and I haven’t missed a single one since.
It's horrible where we are at in socal. In the last 2 days I've pulled 3 people out of nasty situations with a 4th planned in the morning. This channel has come in extremely handy. Thanks! Might actually have to buy a recovery rope from you guys some day 😅
My first 4x4 was a SWB FJ40 Landcruiser that ploughed in on every gravel road downhill corner. I'd turn the wheel and it'd keep driving straight for the cliff, so I learned to lock the hubs in early. Thirty years and two vehicles later I still have that in my head, partially because the glove box of the FJ40 yelled at me to drive the thing with the hubs locked up for a few kilometers every month to make sure the oil got splashed around properly to lubricate things. I'm sure this isn't a problem for a lot of you, but I'm a lot more in the city than I used to be.
I recently retired from a career in technology. One thing I have learned and I continue to advise anyone who will listen is: You can't trust technology ! or Technology does not replace common sense! Thoroughly enjoy every episode. Thank you!

I'm from Minnesota I'm used to 7 feet of snow. But it amazes me how you guys go out together but then all of a sudden one crew is in the desert cliffs and the other is on the mountain in the woods and snow. That is so cool to me
I was your neighbor in ol’ Wisco until I moved west in 2015, then SW Idaho in 2019. I can be mountain biking in the desert, fishing in the river, then an hour later be snowboarding down a mountain. It’s so different from the Midwest. Gives you a ton of options for outdoor recreation. Now, I choose when I want to be in snow, and when I don’t. I’m completely spoiled, and I know it because I grew up where I did. The best part tho is, NO HUMIDITY!!! 🎉
Thank you so much for calling Zion dispatch and getting permission! Recently, in Death Valley (I don't work there), someone went off road, was told by rangers to not try to get out yet because they had to figure out how to get them out without causing more damage to the resources but the people did not listen and then the recovery vehicle got stuck. Both got tickets. Its so frustrating all the dumb things people do in the National Parks, from ignoring road closed signs to going off road where its not allowed and more.
I love watching Peanut bouncing around in the snow, having a blast. 😂 Big shoutout to Lizzie for how far she's come in her skills! She knows the trails and techniques so well!!
I'm similarly inexperienced and definitely would not attempt that without a spotter 🤷♂️ don't blame the guy sometimes it's better to not push your luck
@@MastroAdventures. I agree with you on no need for a spotter but there are people with a lack of experience not knowing the limitations of their vehicle that should go off roading with experienced off roaders. So, they can learn the vehicle limitations.
@@pablocruise678 given the number of recoveries they've done in that stretch I think it's fair to say that plenty of people underestimate it or overestimate their own skill level. Good on the guy to realize he was in over his head and not risk his health or safety or that very nice piece of expensive equipment. Considering one crumpled panel would cost several times what a recovery does it was a very wise choice.
Mad respect to the bronco owner, Is realizing not to be dumb and stop while your ahead. There would be so many people who just end up rolling there car. P.S. Absolutely love this channel💯💯💯

I do the same thing. I wore a watch for decades, then stopped when I developed carpal tunnel. I don't really need a watch, I'm generally aware of what time it is, but I reflexively look at my wrist when thinking about the time. I suspect Matt's situation is similar
Watching these are very entertaining...and serve as a reminder of why I switched from using a 4x4 to a dirt bike on the trails each weekend when I was younger. One bad outing with a 4x4 was more expensive than buying a dirt bike. The bike also allowed me and my buddies to go everywhere, quickly. We would cover lots of ground and the bike had plenty of fuel for an entire day's ride. It was always very satisfying to come up on a gaggle of jeeps stuck at some mud hole and all we did was zip around it. Also, no matter how bad a bike got stuck, two guys could always pull it out. There were very few places where a 4x4 had an advantage over a bike. Dirt bike maintenance was cheap, and even serious repairs were peanuts compared to a broken 4x4.
We got to drive ford lightning this week. If you start skidding in a turn the computer takes over and stops in a straight line. This puts you into the guardrail or over the edge on the outside of the turn. I’m with Matt…You kids get off my lawn!
@ethansgarage7627 Winches are used for a slow and steady pull from the winch motor, so tugging on it like that could snap the line or break something, usually you want a rope or tow strap to tug on a vehicle, but they went slow so it's not too bad.
The geography of your home state is so amazing, You're doing a snow recovery at the exact same time it looked like it was summer weather for TomTom and Lizzie.
@Tactical_Sancho arizona is not comparable lol. You don't have good snow you have flagstaff. You don't have the crazy rock formations in Bryce canyon. All I'm saying is the plethora of different landscapes and environments is unlike anything else
Nothing better than rwd in the snow for fun. All about momentum. Old diesel Mercedes on studed tires was one of my most fun nights ever. Snow started at about 10pm. I went out and did door dash in near whiteout until 6 am. Made like 300$ doing stage rally completely alone on the roads. Awesome.
Matt, regarding the twitchy 4runner: Press & hold the traction control button for 5secs to turn it off. This works on most Toyota and Lexus SUVs and trucks. You could have also turned off the diff lock to mitigate the twitchy-ness during winching. Turning the steering wheel to either extreme with lockers on will cause the twitchy -ness
Tom is right. The use of Roger or Romeo, phonetic code for the letter R, goes back even further to morse code where R meant “I have received your message completely and no repeats are required”. Good research Tom. The international standard phonetic for R is now Romeo, but lots of comms people still say Roger as that’s what they originally learned. The purpose of phonetics is to be unambiguous so none of the phonetics sound similar to any other.
Quick tip for newer Toyotas that seem “twitchy” Matt!! My girlfriend has a 5th gen 4Runner and I get to wheel it sometimes and doing so have noticed that it is also twitchy! The quick fix is turning off traction control ( typically right above your head near the dome lights in a 4Runner at least) and that turns off that computer that takes away power when it feels loss of traction!! Good luck and hope you see this!
I got 4runner TRD. About the twitching you probably are talking about the active traction control (a-trac)... That modulates the brakes to apply brake to the spinning wheel to transfer power to the wheel that got traction. Compensation for no front locker 😅🤷🏻♂️

Its true what he said though, about modern technology in vehicles. The more it takes away from drivers, the less experience drivers get. I think its all geared to get repair shops more business. Dealerships do little more than replace parts now. Real analysis and repair happen with independent mechanics.
My conspiracy theory is they want you to get used to not having control over your cars to get us to a point we won’t own cars and they will have only electric cars outside that you enter and pay per use.

I know that exact spot on the Honeymoon Trail... I did that last Fall. It's VERY off-camber. I had no issues in my SxS but it has a lower COG than a Bronco or Jeep.
Roger was actually a part of the Phonetic Alphabet. Most people immediately think of the NATO Phonetic alphabet; however, that wasn't adopted worldwide (NATO) until 1957, and it is Romeo for "R" in the NATO Phonetic. And Roger/Romeo has basically been replaced with "Over".
You're both correct. Roger was an early WWII era version for 'R' and the modern phonetic alphabet version is Romeo. But "Roger" is still used to today in the military to acknowledge receipt of a transmission. And "Roger, Out" ends the conversation.
That 5th gen 4Runner is one of the last of the newer vehicles where you can actually turn all the traction control off and be in complete control. That’s why I bought mine. Keep up the great work. Love the channel!
I was interested in what Tom Tom said, so I looked it up; in WWII, the US and British militaries collaborated to form a phonetic alphabet system known as CCB, but it was not the same set as the one we use today, which is the standardized NATO system introduced in 1956. The phonetic word for "R" in WWII was indeed "Roger" and not "Romeo".

The 4Runner was twitchy because he had A-TRAC turned on. It uses the ABS to act as a psuedo-locker, applying the brakes to the wheel that spins to send power to the other side of the axle. It works pretty well for what it is, but it's real twitchy and lurchy when it's on because the ABS is constantly making adjustments.
2 great recoveries. I bet the Park Rangers were NOT happy with that customer. Lizzie continues to be impressive. So fun to watch the team grow and do their thing.
I wouldn't be surprised if the NP Rangers gave that guy a ticket for disobeying the law/rules for use. Maybe the figure the tow charge will be enough of a penalty.
@@ponchoandyhe’s discussed this once before. Most of the recoveries only pay a small fee if anything, unless it’s a huge job. He prefers to monetize things on UA-cam and help people out for cheap.
for any more jobs with toyota 4x4s, if you press and hold the traction control button while at a full stop for 10 seconds, it will fully turn off the abs. Hope this helps in the future!!
Just FYI, the “smart” terrain technology in most of the new vehicles is great for normal use. In most recovery situations, mud mode is probably the best setting since it allows all the wheels to spin if there’s little traction. Snow mode is great for normal snow driving, but will actually hinder you in a deep snow recovery situation because it will still hunt for traction.

Roger was from the old phonetic alphabet in WWII era. It was updated along the line to the NATO standard Romeo. (Think easy company band of brothers, E is now Echo.) Great episode, enjoyed the dual recoveries! You have taught Lizzie well, she and Tom aced it. That Toyota probably had A Trac, Toyotas version of lockers....it sucks. I have it on my Tacoma and it's very rough, almost violent. I miss the mechanical limited slip in my old Ranger and YJ for the type of wheeling I do.
Sounded like the driver still had MTS engaged. Not saying I disagree with Matt's sentiment, but also helps when drivers understand their vehicle's technology and how to operate it. Toyota does a decent job with allowing you to turn a lot of it off
Sounds like the Toyota ATRAC system. On my sequoia It uses the ABS and VSC system to find traction. Mine is also a center locking diff, don’t know how the newer 4Runners are set up. It works pretty well honestly, lock the center diff and keep it under 2k RPM and it engages after a few seconds. Nothing replaces an actual locker though obviously!

THIS. This may have been my favorite episode ya’ll have posted. Who ever is responsible for the edit of this footage, props. Job well done!! . The beginning of this episode, going back and forth between the two recovery's and doing it spotlessly was epic. Also, Tom and Lizzy made an awesome team on that recovery, killer team work, and good on Tom for trusting Lizzy’s prior experiences. You guys, and everyone involved F**king killed it on this episode.
It's those new-fangled vehicles that try to outsmart the driver that cause so many people to get stuck. Good old-fashioned 4-wheel drive is best for probably 95% to 98% of situations. For the rest, a transfer case that would allow just front-wheel drive, or rear-wheel drive, or 4-wheel drive is "the bees' knees." Add in locking front hubs so you can get 3-wheel drive and you can go just about anywhere.
I've got to give it to Matt because he will lay down in mud snow and whatever else just to get the job done and another thing is you've one the best off road wrecker challenge a long time ago with the morvair , that thing is awesome and all of you that built that machine should be very proud

I found the cutting back-and-forth between the two rescues hard to follow and confusing. I liked the way you did it before: one complete rescue, followed by another complete rescue.

It's even possible they would make it themself with rear lock and traction off. Traction reduces momentum and prevents digging through the snow.

If the twitching from the 4runner is coming from the tires, it's most likely the traction control, specifically VSC and ATRAC. There's a button to turn it off. All +03 4runners and +05 Tacoma will have the button. You should experiment with it in Tucker's 4runner so you know how to use it in your next recovery.

Thanks for the positive comments on the Freightliner M2. I was Engineering project leader on the creation of it in 1999. We worked hard to create a truck with the customer first. It has been over 20 years and it is still the best selling medium duty truck.
As a techy type, let me congratulate the unsung Engineer. You guys cop a lot of flack for the "what MORON put this nut under this massive piece of steel", but the functional cars, planes, bridges, skyscrapers.... they keep coming and sewerage that WORKS??? Dammit. Well done, Sir.

@@jenniferwhitewolf3784 Yes, designed in Portland in the late 90s introduced about 2000. It had has had a run of over 20 years and still the leading seller in the medium duty market.Many upgrades in powertrain and electronics, but the appearance has not been changed it is it remains current.

On a grand scale, consider that this model series has to be able to be configured as a straight truck or tractor, accommodate engines from 6L to 12L, satisfy the needs to operate as ambulance, fire truck all the way to farm truck or U-Haul, and do it from 30 below zero in Canada to 125 in Arizona. Then assemble and deliver about 500 of them per day with the average workers and deliver top quality. Many things may not make sense in a particular application. That said, not all engineers are stellar, so some silly things always get by. It’s always great to see if we hit the target for the end users.

Same here. When I got to meet the MORR crew in Pigeon Forge TN I told Matt through tears.... "You're not just pulling jeeps out of holes, you're pulling a lot of people out of a lot of places that they don't want to be in right now. And that means a lot to us, it means a lot to me." This channel definitely helps with depression for some reason and it's a Godsend.

My first 4x4 was a SWB FJ40 Landcruiser that ploughed in on every gravel road downhill corner. I'd turn the wheel and it'd keep driving straight for the cliff, so I learned to lock the hubs in early. Thirty years and two vehicles later I still have that in my head, partially because the glove box of the FJ40 yelled at me to drive the thing with the hubs locked up for a few kilometers every month to make sure the oil got splashed around properly to lubricate things. I'm sure this isn't a problem for a lot of you, but I'm a lot more in the city than I used to be.
And, it means you always have another tool to get unstuck. If you get stuck in 4WD you have fewer options.
I recently retired from a career in technology. One thing I have learned and I continue to advise anyone who will listen is:

Yeah, the Four corners states are all really varied in geography and climate.
I was your neighbor in ol’ Wisco until I moved west in 2015, then SW Idaho in 2019. I can be mountain biking in the desert, fishing in the river, then an hour later be snowboarding down a mountain. It’s so different from the Midwest. Gives you a ton of options for outdoor recreation. Now, I choose when I want to be in snow, and when I don’t. I’m completely spoiled, and I know it because I grew up where I did. The best part tho is, NO HUMIDITY!!! 🎉

Recently, in Death Valley (I don't work there), someone went off road, was told by rangers to not try to get out yet because they had to figure out how to get them out without causing more damage to the resources but the people did not listen and then the recovery vehicle got stuck. Both got tickets. Its so frustrating all the dumb things people do in the National Parks, from ignoring road closed signs to going off road where its not allowed and more.
I love watching Peanut bouncing around in the snow, having a blast. 😂 Big shoutout to Lizzie for how far she's come in her skills! She knows the trails and techniques so well!!
I have been in way worst conditions with older Broncos, but hats off to the man that knows his limitations.
I'm similarly inexperienced and definitely would not attempt that without a spotter 🤷♂️ don't blame the guy sometimes it's better to not push your luck

@@MastroAdventures. I agree with you on no need for a spotter but there are people with a lack of experience not knowing the limitations of their vehicle that should go off roading with experienced off roaders. So, they can learn the vehicle limitations.
I thought the same… especially alone… I’m ok with his decision… sort of .. maybe the camera doesn’t show the trail for what it is..
@@pablocruise678 given the number of recoveries they've done in that stretch I think it's fair to say that plenty of people underestimate it or overestimate their own skill level. Good on the guy to realize he was in over his head and not risk his health or safety or that very nice piece of expensive equipment. Considering one crumpled panel would cost several times what a recovery does it was a very wise choice.
Mad respect to the bronco owner, Is realizing not to be dumb and stop while your ahead. There would be so many people who just end up rolling there car.

Even better, he can go back and watch the video of his recovery, then realize that a vehicle did roll there, and another one almost rolled there, and watch that video too after safely driving home!

I do the same thing. I wore a watch for decades, then stopped when I developed carpal tunnel. I don't really need a watch, I'm generally aware of what time it is, but I reflexively look at my wrist when thinking about the time. I suspect Matt's situation is similar

Watching these are very entertaining...and serve as a reminder of why I switched from using a 4x4 to a dirt bike on the trails each weekend when I was younger. One bad outing with a 4x4 was more expensive than buying a dirt bike. The bike also allowed me and my buddies to go everywhere, quickly. We would cover lots of ground and the bike had plenty of fuel for an entire day's ride. It was always very satisfying to come up on a gaggle of jeeps stuck at some mud hole and all we did was zip around it. Also, no matter how bad a bike got stuck, two guys could always pull it out. There were very few places where a 4x4 had an advantage over a bike. Dirt bike maintenance was cheap, and even serious repairs were peanuts compared to a broken 4x4.
We got to drive ford lightning this week. If you start skidding in a turn the computer takes over and stops in a straight line. This puts you into the guardrail or over the edge on the outside of the turn. I’m with Matt…You kids get off my lawn!

@ethansgarage7627 Winches are used for a slow and steady pull from the winch motor, so tugging on it like that could snap the line or break something, usually you want a rope or tow strap to tug on a vehicle, but they went slow so it's not too bad.
The geography of your home state is so amazing, You're doing a snow recovery at the exact same time it looked like it was summer weather for TomTom and Lizzie.
Utah geography is on of a kind. No state or country has what utah has in combination with the other landscapes it has.

Nothing better than rwd in the snow for fun. All about momentum. Old diesel Mercedes on studed tires was one of my most fun nights ever. Snow started at about 10pm. I went out and did door dash in near whiteout until 6 am. Made like 300$ doing stage rally completely alone on the roads. Awesome.
Matt, regarding the twitchy 4runner: Press & hold the traction control button for 5secs to turn it off. This works on most Toyota and Lexus SUVs and trucks. You could have also turned off the diff lock to mitigate the twitchy-ness during winching. Turning the steering wheel to either extreme with lockers on will cause the twitchy -ness

Tom is right. The use of Roger or Romeo, phonetic code for the letter R, goes back even further to morse code where R meant “I have received your message completely and no repeats are required”. Good research Tom. The international standard phonetic for R is now Romeo, but lots of comms people still say Roger as that’s what they originally learned. The purpose of phonetics is to be unambiguous so none of the phonetics sound similar to any other.
My old man was a radio operator in Korea. Roger for R is the old version of Phonetics. Western Union PA used Roger and the NATO PA version uses Romeo.
And Roger Wilco was "Received message, will comply".
Quick tip for newer Toyotas that seem “twitchy” Matt!! My girlfriend has a 5th gen 4Runner and I get to wheel it sometimes and doing so have noticed that it is also twitchy! The quick fix is turning off traction control ( typically right above your head near the dome lights in a 4Runner at least) and that turns off that computer that takes away power when it feels loss of traction!! Good luck and hope you see this!
I got 4runner TRD. About the twitching you probably are talking about the active traction control (a-trac)... That modulates the brakes to apply brake to the spinning wheel to transfer power to the wheel that got traction. Compensation for no front locker 😅🤷🏻♂️

I was thinking the same thing, looking down on it from that hillside made it look like a simple easy hill. In certain it was much more treacherous than the Go-Pro suggested.

Its true what he said though, about modern technology in vehicles. The more it takes away from drivers, the less experience drivers get. I think its all geared to get repair shops more business. Dealerships do little more than replace parts now. Real analysis and repair happen with independent mechanics.
My conspiracy theory is they want you to get used to not having control over your cars to get us to a point we won’t own cars and they will have only electric cars outside that you enter and pay per use.

I know that exact spot on the Honeymoon Trail... I did that last Fall. It's VERY off-camber. I had no issues in my SxS but it has a lower COG than a Bronco or Jeep.

Roger was actually a part of the Phonetic Alphabet. Most people immediately think of the NATO Phonetic alphabet; however, that wasn't adopted worldwide (NATO) until 1957, and it is Romeo for "R" in the NATO Phonetic. And Roger/Romeo has basically been replaced with "Over".
You're both correct. Roger was an early WWII era version for 'R' and the modern phonetic alphabet version is Romeo. But "Roger" is still used to today in the military to acknowledge receipt of a transmission. And "Roger, Out" ends the conversation.
That 5th gen 4Runner is one of the last of the newer vehicles where you can actually turn all the traction control off and be in complete control. That’s why I bought mine. Keep up the great work. Love the channel!

I was interested in what Tom Tom said, so I looked it up; in WWII, the US and British militaries collaborated to form a phonetic alphabet system known as CCB, but it was not the same set as the one we use today, which is the standardized NATO system introduced in 1956. The phonetic word for "R" in WWII was indeed "Roger" and not "Romeo".

The 4Runner was twitchy because he had A-TRAC turned on. It uses the ABS to act as a psuedo-locker, applying the brakes to the wheel that spins to send power to the other side of the axle. It works pretty well for what it is, but it's real twitchy and lurchy when it's on because the ABS is constantly making adjustments.
I saw the Morvar on a Trailer head South one I-15 last Sunday. Beautiful Machine.

for any more jobs with toyota 4x4s, if you press and hold the traction control button while at a full stop for 10 seconds, it will fully turn off the abs. Hope this helps in the future!!
Just FYI, the “smart” terrain technology in most of the new vehicles is great for normal use. In most recovery situations, mud mode is probably the best setting since it allows all the wheels to spin if there’s little traction. Snow mode is great for normal snow driving, but will actually hinder you in a deep snow recovery situation because it will still hunt for traction.

Roger was from the old phonetic alphabet in WWII era. It was updated along the line to the NATO standard Romeo. (Think easy company band of brothers, E is now Echo.) It actually came from when sending morse code, they'd send the letter "r" to acknowledge receipt. Thus it became Roger on voice. All sorts of lingo and terminology left over from morse code days.
Lol, they did the same thing as me on Honeymoon. I hate being off camber, and I panicked. Actually, my oldest daughter panicked first, and then I gave in and called for help. Lol. I'm glad I'm in good company, and others have issues in that spot. It makes me feel less stupid. 😬

That Toyota probably had A Trac, Toyotas version of lockers....it sucks. I have it on my Tacoma and it's very rough, almost violent. I miss the mechanical limited slip in my old Ranger and YJ for the type of wheeling I do.
Sounded like the driver still had MTS engaged. Not saying I disagree with Matt's sentiment, but also helps when drivers understand their vehicle's technology and how to operate it. Toyota does a decent job with allowing you to turn a lot of it off
Sounds like the Toyota ATRAC system. On my sequoia It uses the ABS and VSC system to find traction. Mine is also a center locking diff, don’t know how the newer 4Runners are set up. It works pretty well honestly, lock the center diff and keep it under 2k RPM and it engages after a few seconds. Nothing replaces an actual locker though obviously!

That twitchiness is the Active Traction Control on the 4Runner. It's very effective when used correctly. But sounds like something's broken when using it.
Great job, appreciate the team bringing us along to the recoveries. I think the guy in the Toyota was helping out a little to much with the right foot. Then he almost ran over the winch line. I despise when people drive over my equipment.

The beginning of this episode, going back and forth between the two recovery's and doing it spotlessly was epic. Also, Tom and Lizzy made an awesome team on that recovery, killer team work, and good on Tom for trusting Lizzy’s prior experiences. You guys, and everyone involved F**king killed it on this episode.
It's those new-fangled vehicles that try to outsmart the driver that cause so many people to get stuck. Good old-fashioned 4-wheel drive is best for probably 95% to 98% of situations. For the rest, a transfer case that would allow just front-wheel drive, or rear-wheel drive, or 4-wheel drive is "the bees' knees." Add in locking front hubs so you can get 3-wheel drive and you can go just about anywhere.
I've got to give it to Matt because he will lay down in mud snow and whatever else just to get the job done and another thing is you've one the best off road wrecker challenge a long time ago with the morvair , that thing is awesome and all of you that built that machine should be very proud

I love that you’ve been tracking the number of rescues. I remember when it was just the first few going up. The Morvair is so awesome and somehow the most unlikely of “tow truck” so I love it.

I found the cutting back-and-forth between the two rescues hard to follow and confusing. I liked the way you did it before: one complete rescue, followed by another complete rescue.
