I love watching your videos, because these are places I can't go right now. I used to go to Moscow PA. a long time ago. I remember the coalpiles of Scranton.....but PA is SO beautiful. It's a lot like here (western Mass.)…..you have lots of lovely parks. And some fascinating history. Thank You.

I live in beautiful Lancaster County and we have a few more covered bridges too. They're precious to us! Very enjoyable to sit alongside on the banks of the streams and take nature in.

Cool video. It's great that they didn't replace it with a concrete bridge. Columbia county and Sullivan county have some that were rebuilt after flooding in 2006 and 2011.

For those interested in the stats on the two bridges:
PA/38-36-26x Colemanville Bridge #1- Was Pequea #21, now #12. It was a single span Double Burr Truss (concentric arches in each truss) originally built in 1856 by James C. Carpenter at a cost of $2,244.00. Overall length was 167', with a clear span of 153', a 14' roadway, a 13' clearance and stood 13' above water.
    (1982 measurements with a 100ft tape measure)
It was washed away in the flash flood of Sunday, June 26, 1938, but returned to its abutments by Edmond Gardner and crew. It was washed away again by Tropical Storm Agnes on Thursday, June 22, 1972. It was again brought back to the original site and rebuilt by the late David Esh and his Amish crew. It was oriented north to south on Fox Hollow Road (T408) between Conestoga and Martic Townships.
A new covered bridge (PA/38-36-55) was built on the downstream side of the old one at a slight angle, with the idea of removing the old bridge after the new one was opened. A legal battle involving land ownership on the Martic Township (south) side developed, which delayed the opening of the new bridge for about two years and for part of this time the old bridge was still being used. During the week of July 18, 1993, the old bridge was demolished. Work was completed by July 27, 1993. Both abutments of the old bridge are still there. Coordinates are taken off an imaginary line drawn between them.
    39° 53.9282'N, 76° 20.5202'W
PA/38-36-55 Colemanville Bridge #2- Pequea #12 It is a single span Burr Truss, built in 1990 by the now defunct Lancaster County Bridge Crew at a cost of $350,000.00. Overall length is 160', with a clear span of 142', a 14'10" roadway, a 13' clearance and at 19', this bridge stands higher above the water than any other covered bridge in the county. (1993 measurements)
For approximately three years, the two bridges stood side by side, which is why this one was given a new World Guide Number. Other than it having a single Burr Arch made up of wide straight segments and its slightly shorter length, it is identical in appearance to the old bridge.
    39° 53.9331'N, 76° 20.5302'W
In regards to what happened to the old bridge, Lancaster County had (or still has) a "bridge bank" that was made up of old truss members and such. The purpose being that there was a readily available supply of parts for repairs. This bridge bank may still exist, as there have been quite a few almost total truss member replacements in the last 10 years. Total rebuild of the Seigrist Mill Bridge and an almost total rebuild of Pinetown and Neff's Mill Bridges, to name a few.
There had been several options on what to do about the steel bridge, closed to traffic on Loop Road near Marticville a few years ago, and one of those options was to replace it with a covered bridge. That would be nice, as the steel bridge had replaced the former covered bridge that was washed away by the same June 26, 1938 floods that took out the first Colemanville Bridge. Remnants of the old abutments to the CB were still discernible about 600ft downstream in the early 2000s. They're probably still there.

Cliff ,In my opinion from the photo on display it I believe was showing a side by side view of the original structure ,and completed structure on the left .With technology advances in building materials restoration projects of historical wooden bridges they utilize the existing structures with reinforcement ,or replacement of areas needing structural upgrades . I highly doubt these built a new bridge besides the old .Unless the existing structure was beyond repair .The University of WV structural engineering department was restoring many covered bridges that you can check out videos on UA-cam . Cliff ,when you showed us the original stone abutments I believe when they restored the bridge it also had new higher modern abutments made ,and raised it to protect from flooding conditions. Check out the WVU UA-cam video on structural repairs of PA covered bridges using modern technology cut out rotten original bridge beams ,and spliced in new wood .Very good video ,and if I can find it I will email to you .JoeM.

That particular 'standing' does not mean you cannot physically stand there. It is for cars who park there for a long time with a driver in it...

Cliff has learned to live with disappointment with an "oh well." I think that is a good life lesson to just dismiss what you can do nothing about. Give it an "oh well," and go on.

Sent an email, but probably too late for this video. The current bridge was built from all new wood in 1990 and the old bridge was torn down during the week of July 18, 1993. There was a legal battle involving land ownership on the Martic Township (south) side, which delayed the opening of the new bridge for three years and the two sat side by side during that time. Never really understood why all the no stopping or standing signs are posted, as the county went to all the expense to build the new bridge and everyone that wants to enjoy it has to be afraid of parking.

  • @chrisgray8774

Even if that bridge is only 46 years old (1973), the big arch beams might be 146 years from seed. The drive through looked like something from your Knoebles video. Cool.

I've been told different things, some say it was completely rebuilt others some of the original woods was reused.
