  • In 1995 my 1981 BMW R100RS was put in the garage for winter, I dismantled the back end of the bike to do a little bit of work on it.. but in a cold garage in winter nothing was worked on, as the better weather came family seemed to come first. The bike stayed in the garage deteriorating over the years...
Many times I said I should get it back on the road, even buying a BMW G310R to get used to riding again. My first job on the old BMW was to strip the front forks and get the stanchions rechromed. Both master cylinders needed replacing as well as all the brake pipes. Once ready to start it, new battery in and all the bits back on and fresh oil and petrol, I was ready to go... but no, a false start, turning on the fuel taps petrol sprung out from the old fuel lines, another job to do..
Finally I was ready, first touch of the electric start button and it gave a cough, second touch of the button it fired up, what a wonderful feeling.. I took it for a short ride, it felt great, but with old tyres on I didn't want to chance them anymore..
At the moment the bike is back in my garage with no wheels on as I get ready to get new tyres fitted next week. Hopefully my next ride on the bike I will set my GoPro up properly. :-)

I've owned mine since 1985, the bike was first registered in Jersey, the Channel Islands. Not sure why someone would want such a powerful bike on an island that has a forty mph speed limit. The bike was low mileage so maybe it was taken on a tour a couple of times.. It's a bike I've never wanted to part with, even for the long period I didn't use it, I always knew I would get it back on the road again :-)

Thanks, it’s a bike I couldn’t part with.. I must admit there was a long period it just stood uncared for in the garage while work and family got in the way of riding it, but I always said I’d get it back on the road..
at the moment I have a carb problem, when on the side stand the carb leaks, otherwise it runs great :-)
