I only listen to Wolfenstein 3D Theme, been rocking 2$ headphone for 2 years, wish me luck upgrading to rgb gaming headset that sells about 1900$ in ebay.
Edit : the headphone sound is good, sounds really familiar with ny old headphone, the bass also, the bass is muddy but since its 1800$ i take it as good, also the microphone sometimes not working and i almost break the microphone, also the cable is quite good, a bit wore down, yet somehoe the box is a bit open when i received the package, also the earpad is weird like it smells like something idk, there is also some yellowish thing, idk why can someone please help me or atleast tell me is this what 1800$ headset sounds like or what?

Almost 5K and glued pads ? At that price point you’re not just paying for the sound - you’re paying for aesthetics, build, finish, it’s almost like a work of art. In your mind it has to be perfect.
audeze pads last forever and they can still be replaced
@@Max-wg6iu but the deal is that you'd want to try other pads and customize it to your liking. Isn't that what you'd want from a flagship?
@@shehzadamurthy1983 Not really, for instance, people don't really swap Susvara pads and most flagships are designed with the original pads in mind. The only argument I see is being able to replace them, which is a non-issue because the Audeze pads last for very long time, and if you need to replace them they are inexpensive and Audeze can do it for you. The reason they are glued on is to maintain a better seal and flatter bass response.

@@Max-wg6iu Agreed. I think their leather pads are top notch. However, it's a shitty experience to replace them if you have to for any reason. The LCD-5 looks like they really used everything they learned from their previous designs, but they should have designed a simple mechanism for this by now... Regardless of the price.
As a drummer, this is very nice to hear. I currently have the LCD-X atm, and while the LCD 5 is crazy expensive, I don't actually mind paying that much if these headphones are actually worth getting. Looking forward to your full review!

Thank you for the first impressions, Josh. The drums rendering on prior LCD series is what really hooked me to the Audeze sound. It sounds like I need to experience the LCD-5 now.
Also, per the usual fantastic b-roll, it appears we both share a love of whiskey and audio. My wallet hates them both.

I would and I'm sure many others would love to see you make a new tier list of headphones, amps, dacs whatever but regardless of price and not in terms of value. I think you've hinted at in the past but I think that would be a nice way to cap off 2021 and a good standard for 2022. I personally would love to see how you would rank the newer headphones that came out like LCD-5, Audeze Carbon, Meze Emperyean Elite compared to the old greats like Susvara, Abyss 1266 TC, Stax 009s.

Agree with your impressions on these. Mine just came in the mail yesterday and I've been enjoying them so far. The lack of bass quantity compared to my 4z which I sent in for trade in surprised me but I really like how textured the bass is on the 5. With the more even sound (to my ears) I find it to be a nice compliment to my 1266 tc
How does it compare to the tc overall? Is it a better headphone technically?
@@rafael6693 Overall the 5 has a more balanced presentation to me and is softer in it's attack. Resolution is similar between the two although I would probably give the edge to the TC but it's not a big difference. I find them to be good compliments to each other because they do things better in different areas than the other one. The 5 is great with vocals as they have a smoother sound and are very intimate. The 5 is very resolving without sounding offensive or fatiguing. The 1266 on the other hand sounds very alive and gets me more into the music. The bass extension especially into the sub bass is better on the TC.
The bass on the LCD-R is excellent, I am glad I made the choice I did and pulled the trigger on the LCD-R, instead of waiting for this one.

great vid josh i really wanted to see more about the lcd - 5. when did you start doing the unbox therapy style cam/gloves? i like it - please do more reviews from that vantage point. not enough headphone reviewers out there show the headphones in that way.
Thanks for the comparison to the LCD4. Any more comparison to the 4 would be welcome. (I always felt that the 4 was a champion with drums. It always startled me with its realism with percussion of any sort.)

Wow, that’s a big weight difference. I’ve consistently ended up selling them over and over after trying the lcd-2, lcd-2 classic closed back, the lcd-xc 2021, all I couldn’t bear to wear for more than a hour. Too bad this blows all of them away in terms of price though as it’s a killer to the wallet.
I would have gone w/ LCD's if it was not for the weight issues that the majority of owners have voiced. I ended up going w/ the Meze Empyrean's and I can wear them for hours on end w/o any comfort issues.

They will still sell the lcd4. It's not discontinued. Just a parts problem.

Hey Josh, do you have a list of main tracks that you use to test headphones? I took your advice from a while back to listen to Yosi Horikawa and Amber Rubarth and they're amazing for soundstage, as you said. But do you have a go-to list of tracks that you use to test specific things? Would love more reference material on top of just the music that I normally listen to!

Hi Josh, I need audio gear recommendation. I have AT M40X and no complaints about the sound. My concerns with M40X are, hot ears & feeling heavy over ears after long listening and kind of within-head sound (no breathing space in ear cups). I don't like in-ear headphones, as I hear my voice within my head when speaking/eating, which gives me headache. The gear will be for personal use and will use it for music, movies and youtube, across phone, tab and laptop. Please recommend 1or 2 audio gear, in affordable price range, with good sound stage, vocal clarity and enough bass. Thanks.
would love to see a comparison with the new diana tc in the full review, maybe even something like the meze empyreans and an lcd x for a nice middle ground, either way cant wait!

Probably misspoke; official specs say 420g (which they mention is “blazingly” low weigh, to lean into the pun even more 😂)
420 is still heavy, but the big thing to remember is that the heavier you go, the more annoying every additional Gram becomes.
My current LCD-2 is 535g (bamboo), my older one was 653g (Shedua wood) and the difference is I can use them for 3 hours instead of 30 minutes.
420g is still not amazing by any means, but it should be a very large improvement. (Now... please make your other cheaper LCD lineup like that too. Im not spending that money on a HP).

So the punch and snap of the snare sound nice for certain songs? Atleast for certain tracks produced that way? Was curious how these will sound if I were to listen to something like Them Crooked Vultures where the drums (especially the snare) sound is more live and roomy compared to the sampled beat of NIN's Closer.

Both are smaller, lighter and more efficient than the LCD 4.
I think the 4z Sounds like an hd650 with base extension and way more details.
Some reviewers of the LCD 5 used the exact same words to describe its sound.

I think the upper midrange and treble focus is just a tuning choice towards the high end head phone audience. These people really enjoy symphonys and orchestral music where these ranges are the most important. Cheaper stuff -> usually more bass emphasis and bass refinement. So I dont think they change their general sound direction, since stuff like the 2c and the X sell great (different audience).
The HifiMan CEO talks about that a lot.
You would think, but it seems like these need lots or EQ, which isn't popular among that set. (I own a pair). Its just a LOT of midrange.
The pads being glued on is such a whiff; I can’t believe Audeze made that decision. Wonder how they justified that internally?
They really did try to do swappable pads (like what Meze does) in the prototype versions for the LCD-5, but unfortunately they were never able to get the frequency response they were trying to achieve. It constantly messed with the tonality. I think it’s totally justified given it was going to be the new flagship.
If the tonality was broken because they had to include a swappable pad system they would’ve been crucified by reviewers and customers.
Audeze still sells the LCD-4, they are just temporally out of stock while they wait on part shipments.
Whew got worried there, it’s on my list.
interesting that the aftermarket price for the LCD-4 dropped so much after the LCD-5.... $2K for a LCD-4 now .... crazy
... it's not like the LCD-4 contains unique parts that none of the other LCD's have... It's just a tuning difference, lmao. xD
@@MyouKyuubi that's not true at all. The LCD-4 has wood cups that have to be specially supplied, and milled. The original wood cups had an issue with cracking, so they changed wood. In order to not have QC issues in the future, they decided to wait for the wood to be delivered than use a different wood that might be of lower quality.

Also, LCD-4 also comes in a non-wooden metal-cupped version... It's called the "LCD-4z", same sound signature and everything, just, a non-wooden version. :P
So, they are still selling it, they're just not selling the wooden-cup version anymore.
And no, they don't need to wait for the "shipment of wooden cups" to arrive, it doesn't take that long for them to start producing headphones, AND they can literally just use one of the cups from their other headphones, and just give them slightly different paint job. :P
It's the same exact design... So using a different wood, wouldn't cause a bottleneck in the system... All they have to do is insert a different wood into the same damn production line. :P
The machines don't care what kind of wood they're working with, lmao... it's not like specific types of wood, requires specialized tools, lmao. xD
Like is aid, it contains nothing unique, it's the exact same design as all the other LCD's.
The reason it is no longer available, is because they aren't selling that version anymore.

Have you tried the Avantone Pro Planar headphones. I haven't but I would like to. A few favourable reviews out there.
I compared them yesterday with the Mezes and the LCD-X 2021. To me the LCD-5 feels like a very refined studio monitor, very informative sound with no drama. That can be a very good thing or a bad thing depending on what you’re looking for.
To me, the X is more exciting with more slam and heft but also certainly less refined when you compare. Detail wise though I don’t feel that the price difference reflects the performance gain, that speaks more to the excellence of the X though as to me it felt more detailed than the Meze’s which makes it seem like a bargain.
When do you think you’ll have the full review up?

A question for the Joshua or the community: whats the best way to share 2 sets of headphones? If you had 2 pair of mid-tier headphones and wanted to share music from one source (analog or digital) whats the best way of going about that?
^this please, right now we are just using spotify group sessions and it is less than ideal since they are never quite synced up. Someone is always a little ahead or behind in the song than the other and its distracting if you are sitting next to each other with open backs

Notable burn in over a 3 hour period?… are you referring to head/ear burn in or pad warming/“burnin”? Pretty sure that theoretical driver burn in doesn’t shift that suddenly.
Burn-in also isn't real. It's most likely that he got used to the sound since it was fairly different, that always happens when you get new gear.
@@KaneAmaroq that’s exactly what I was getting at - by his description it sounds like personal adaptation that he declared to be burn-in.
I’m not against the idea of burn in, because I haven’t been able to find any adequate testing to actually prove it does or doesn’t happen. Somehow with all this equipment and testing, I still haven’t seen any appropriately objective scientific testing on the subject. Both sides have proven to be quite blindly subjective, and rarely provide any data, let alone, respectable data. It’s mind boggling to me.
I tried them but found the clamping force very high - couldn’t wear them for more than 30 minutes or so. I would rather have the weight.

Audeze tried incorporating magnetic swappable pads in their prototypes for these, but the results always ended up messing with the tonality they were trying to achieve.
They should take notes from the Meze Empyreans. :3

I have an original LCD-X. I’ve done what I can to mitigate the problems the weight was causing which was pressure on my jawbone. I got the carbon headband, the longer yolk bars and put Dekoni nuggets underneath the headband. This helped a lot by distributing the weight. I also put Dekoni hybrid ear pads since the original ear pads came off (STOP using glue Audeze!). The Dekoni hybrids also helped more than I expected. Now my LCD-X is pretty much as comfortable as they’re gonna be.
So why am I ranting about LCD-X? Beeeecauuuuse Audeze releases a lighter headphone and put a $4,500 price tag on it. It’s like, dude (Audeze) - where’s the middle ground? Either cheaper heavy as f… headphones or light but expensive top-tier headphones. I love the sound of my LCD-X’s but the weight issue pushed me straight into the welcoming arms of Hifiman. Those Ananda’s and Arya’s are pretty sweet in the mid-tier range. Sure Hifiman’s top tier headphone is a whopping $6.000 but they’ve got you covered in every price tier from a few hundred bucks on up.
While the LCD-5 may be a winner - and I love the focus on the midrange - I’m very disappointed in Audeze’s product offering as a whole. They have to be looking at what Dan Clark and Hifiman are doing so I wonder what their thinking is. Maybe it’s their intention to produce fewer products and sell them at a premium with no mass-production ambition. I think this is probably the case.
they should take solid notes from the Meze Empyreans too, in terms of magnetic padding technology that either doesnt affect the tonality of the sound, or compliments it. :P
Glued pads? For that price-point? Fkin unacceptable, flat out unacceptable. >_>
I mean, the pricing of most of the LCD line is totally tone-deaf compared to the price-to-performance value of Hifiman products, so i guess Audeze is just a company that likes to scam people for their money... And no, it doesn't cost that much to create improved build quality of the headphone... most, if not all Audeze products, should at least be selling at 50% the price they're currently selling at.
I mean, pay 300% more than a Sundara, for 25% worse performance (I'm talking LCD2C in this particular case)? What a fkin joke... The Sundara is cheap, so it can get away with glued ear pads, Audeze LCD-5, simply can not, not at that pricepoint (white-glove handling pricepoint, lmao), and that is only assuming it beats the Sundara in terms of performance, which it also definitely should, at that pricepoint. :P
I'm genuinely starting to think Audeze are just a company of grifters at this point.

If you hate the treble of the hd800s you might be better of with the hd8xx. They are not that bad as people make them sound. For me personally the slightly hollow upper midrange in the hd8xx is less of an issue for me than the weird artificial sound the Aryas have in the mid-upper mid range which is especially clear on female vocals.

Honestly, with olufs eq profile the q35 is damn good for the money.
Maybe the LCD-5 will lead to a much cheaper but better sounding bass headphone they have in the works.
i love my LCD-4 (will keep for the Bass) and i own LCD-5. also enjoying them with Woo Audio WA33 Elite Edition (JPS Wired) i agree with you on the details part. its very insane, the Treble Detail Retrieval without being noticed as much but it tells you its there, no matter how complex the track is. hopefully you can compare this with Diana Phi, looking forward for your review man.

It might be possible but it depends. The existing LCD-X rods will not fit so along with the headband you’ll need the new rods and then depending on how they’re designed mounting wise on the bottom wise you would have to be able to secure the existing LCD-X yokes to them. You’d also likely have to flip the yokes around and straighten the bent table the existing LCD-X rods secure to. It’s all kind of difficult to explain clearly but if you look at a photo of the LCD-5 and look at your LCD-X you’ll understand where the issues are in regards to the difference in the angles of the rods between the two

It's silly to prioritize aesthetics, I know, but I really prefer the sorta "vintage" look of the original LCD line-up over these. I'm saving for the 2021 revision LCD-X now and a WA7 Gen 3. I doubt the weight will bother me. I have a big head anyway. When it comes to new Audeze models though, I just hope they do a revision of the LCDi4 or an LCDi5 IEM that _doesn't_ need a cipher cable to sound great.

They publicly posted on Head-Fi that despite the misleading text on their web site which redirects you to the LCD-5 that they in fact do intend to keep making and selling the LCD-4 but there are some current supply chain issues for parts for that model and they’re not focusing on that seeing as demand for the LCD-5 is bigger than they can fulfill right now.
I love how they had time to post that but not the time to simply change the wording on the website haha

@@KingdomKey57 I guess I don’t feel that way - these are generally built to order as I recall when I looked into it earlier - so they’re not building them right now because of a parts shortage and are redirecting buyers to one they are, which doesn’t have the same parts dependencies since the LCD-5 doesn’t use wood like the LCD-4.
oh god josh... you fell for the "burn in"-side.
The concept of burn-in has been tested in labs, and the lab equipment can't tell a difference between brand new headphone, or the same headphone with a mileage of +150 hours. It has been completely debunked, lmao.
But i understand why people fall for the myth, when even the companies that sell these headphones write in their user manuals that "the headphone may need a burn-in period"... Says so in my Sundara user manual... When even people who seem like authorities on the matter seem like they believe it, makes it all the more convincing, so the customers will start believing it too.
It's more accurate to say that the customer needs an adaption period, to adapt to the sound signature of the headphone in question. :P
And, if they don't actually wear the headphone during the "burn-in", just letting the headphone play music while they do other things... Then it's just placebo effect that makes them think there's a difference, lol.
And trust me, ask any doctor in the field of medicine how much placebo effect can actually affect people's experiences, or even physiology, that sht is spooky as hell. >_>

@@MyouKyuubi it's not all I want. Plus there's a difference between bloated drawn out bass......and prestine crisp heavy bass lol. The lcd-4 sounds like the sound signature I'm looking for as far as the level of bass mids and highs. I'm just asking for something with that signature but cheaper.

wondering... kinda crazy like wondering.... how do the 7hz Timeless compare to the LCD-5... I know.. crazy thought but would be an interesting compare side by side as they are both planar and the 7hz has great bass... and they are a tad lighter in weight too... :-)

I have listened to both these and the LCD-4. THEY ARE NOT LOW ON BASS. It is a relativity issue. The reason the 4's seem like they have 'more' bass is because on those everything from 2-6k is shelved down VS the 5. So this makes the bass on the 4's seem more in quantity. If you play bass specific test tracks on these (as I did) you will understand. The 5's are just way more balanced. By direct comparison the mids on the 4's sound recessed, dark, veiled even. In the treble it is reversed. 5's are a little veiled (relatively) to the 4's. I love the 4's but -To My Ears- the 5's are a clear step up in EVERY area, objective or subjective to the 4's. Except for the treble, but I EQ so that is a non issue for me.
I haven't owned the 4, but I have an older LCD-XC with significantly more bass that the 5, which is honestly about on par with the Beyer T1. The problem is that the upper midrange is so loud that you can't get bass volume anywhere near it should be. Cut off that huge midrange spike and then the LCD-5 bass would probably seem neutral in comparison. Against Meze Empyrean the LCD-5 bass sounds like Grado. You can hear its there, but way at the back of the mix and you definitely can't feel it, unless you boost a lot and cut the midrange honk.
Curious on its soundstage capabilities
