Andy Tran has some good survival tips :) Great video - I have not been a fan of the SOG machetes so far, but I really like their tomahawks. This looks pretty good though! You can really tell this machete excels at cutting the green wood. Thanks for sharing!
Yeah, when my son bought this I thought it looked a little gimmicky but I it turned out to be a pretty good tool. It is sharp as the dickens and the Tanto blade shape does have some advantages in some situations.
I have one of these knives too. I'd trust it more as a survival knife than most for the cost. And while the saw isn't very useful for wood, it'd probably be good for bone. And a while back my brother in law and I were building a fort out of recycled materials around us and this blade was one of our MVP tools.
this is the knife i use every single day for everything! the sheath sucks but i love this knife. ive never sharpened it and was slicing tomatoes today perfectly
Good review. I wasn’t a huge fan of my SOG honestly. Blade bent on me using it under better conditions than you demonstrated. I will say it’s pretty cool looking tho.
I got the Gerber Gator Machete Jr at wally world for 17 and change. A word of caution on yours. Mine came with a lanyard that is specifically made to loop over the front of the handle and prevents your hand from moving forward if you lose your grip. If that one came with one I'd suggest putting it back on for this reason. There is a video of the Gerber compared to another and a military issue machete and it performed well. I got it specifically to saw off pine branches and stumps for lighter wood. I live in NC and there are lots of pines around. I wlll be using the Nano wood stove so this tool will come in handy for those purposes. I enjoy your channel and subscribed as soon as I saw some of your vids. I use your amazon link too but not sure how it works. If I click on it and save stuff to cart and leave will you still get credit when I log back in later then purchase? Thanks Bryan!
That is a good question about Amazon. I don't know. I know if you click through to Amazon from one of my links I get credit for 24 hours unless you click through somebody else's link. Basically the last link used in the past 24 hours is the one that counts (I think). I am going to try to find out about the saved stuff. Thanks for the support. It really helps.
Not an actual machete, but small enough to carry conveniently, and a heavy blade for chopping. The sheath is a joke. Minimalist useful and planned obsolescent. You have to work it: heat it a bit and put a cinder block on top to flatten it and ease it a bit. Where the widest edge fits in needs to be glued securely or the blade will cut the sheath open. A plastic liner for guiding the tip in, or the very sharp tip will easily cut its way out through the side and destroy the sheath. Needs reinforcement of the top lip where the saw back will shred it. The little velcro closure is wimpy and velcro just isn't very secure or long lasting anyway. Mine destroyed itself quickly at _all_ of these points. You need to be extremely careful putting it in or taking it out or these failures occur easily. I rebuilt it into a better more durable and secure sheath as a project for gorilla glue, an old plastic container, some scrap leather and webbing. Sending it back under warranty might be problematic, since they could say it's beyond normal wear & tear, and any replacement sheath would suffer from the same issues. Whoever designed it didn't test it for any duration: the tool is excellent... At other things, but especially at wrecking it.
I almost bought it today, the saw looked really dull though like youd have to sharpen it. Like it comes dull on the saw end but the blade end comes sharp. I just like it cause its all black and is slightly unique . I might pick it up . In canada its 35 bucks
Nice review, actually seems like a decent product from SOG. Bryan please wear some gloves and steady that log you chop on before you go to the ER missing a finger!!! Scare me every time I watch!
I just like living right there on that razor's edge ;-) I do need to get a better chopping block, that one gets on my nerves. Also, I know SOG has been catching flak for out lower priced Chinese made gear, but I still like them. One of my sons has both a Seal Pup and an SOG Multi Tool and they both rock as far as I'm concerned. I like this little Sogfari too. The reality is not everyone has room in their budget for higher priced gear and I for one am glad companies like SOG, Schrade, Gerber and some others have done what they needed to do to bring a good value in outdoor gear to us average folks. Sorry for the mini rant. Thanks for the concern for my fingers. - Bryan
Looks alot like the gerber gator. The problem with the saw back, is that when you boton with it, it chews the crap out of your baton, tho the saw worked ok. Good review bro
got one, scarey sharp but more importantly can do the job when it comes to task.....well balanced and @ Walmart like well, you may not be able to find one now.
Hey, Bryan; That would make a great "Zombie"-"Pacifier" LOL Good Review Thanks 4 sharing. Hoping all's well safe & warm, there. Happy Trails From The Maritimes In Canada ATB Terry " GOD BLESS "
Crappy soft steel, but you DONT want brittle steel either. For backyard use...its perfectly fine. I would not want S90V machete that will break , and at $200 . For the cheap price.. .it's a fine tool
That's interesting. The handle on the Killamanjaro is exactly like the Renegade tanto machete, but the sheath looked exactly like what comes on the Sogfari.
I have this. Looks and feels like the flimsy piece of junk that it is. However.... It really works well. Amazingly well. Buy 'em cheap for hacking at stuff around the yard, and it'll really surprise you.
Its interesting how nowadays we can gripe, complain and demand higher quality steel, when our low quality stuff would be top notch in the middle ages and renaissance. LOL
Nothing wrong with taking advantage of modern technology but I do think there are a lot of people who would never know he difference if they didn't know what steel their knife was and what the internet says about it.
Survival On Purpose Half the knives out there are already cheap mystery steel anyway. I love how steel is made. I might become a pro blacksmith one day. LOL. I just gotta save the money to buy the tools.
I own a SogFari 13'' machete. The 3Cr13 steel is quite shity chinese steel. Many people complained their Sogfaries broke, chiped. Bought it several years ago. But now I wouldn't buy it again.
this is my favorite machete. it is absolutely perfect in every aspect in my opinion. so great that I own two of them.
The holes in the handle is for paracord or to wrap a specific material for a better grip, not for a spear (but you can do that I guess)

What machete do you recommend

I paid $25 at Menards for this and the hand axe together. .....pretty satisfied with the quality. .... great camping gear
Indeed.
You did a great job with this review, showed me everything I wanted to see
Thanks

I like that throw you did , stuck right in the tree

So has it held up? Would love some follow up info.
Good blade nice review thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching Gyuri.

+Review Canada Yeah, the saw is not that great as it comes but it is better than some I have seen.
Great work Brian
Thanks for watching.
You just sold me on this knife bud, thanks.
My favorite blade/friend!
Thanks

Nice machete saw. I like it better than my Corona machete saw. Thanks for the review.
Thanks Kenneth. The saw leave a little to be desired but it is just fun little blade.
Looks alot like the gerber gator. The problem with the saw back, is that when you boton with it, it chews the crap out of your baton, tho the saw worked ok. Good review bro
Thanks. Yeah, it chewed up my baton, but I can always find another one.
I use these every now and then to cut like fishing pole reeds. But for chopping I use a hatchet, thanks for the video.
I know, but I just think it is a cool design. Sometimes I'm 54 going on 14 ;-)
seems quite good for the money. you might wanna try sharpening up the teeth on that saw back - make it a bit more useful
I'll mention that to my son. It belongs to him. Maybe a good father/son project. Thanks- Bryan
Love your channel!
+Eyeamtha1 thanks.
hi Brian its me again from Guadalajara México, i cant choose between this one or the Gerber gator jr which is better?
+Kroos Kroos I have never used the gator, so I can't say.
Hi I know I'm late here but I have a friend with a Gerber gates. The steel is too soft of American wood. The edge rolls badly
I got one and I love it.picked mine up for $19.99
Cool
that's a tough little machete. thanks for sharing, not a bad price either
Yep. I like SOG stuff anyway. I was really surprised when my son got this at how sharp it was. Stay warm up there Jim/
I just bought and tried it out and I think its pretty good. Not idea for chopping bush tho.. But great tool
Jay Gotti It has it's uses.
I love it
Great review.
Thanks.
cool blade, is the sheath so so or ok?
does it have some plastic insert in it?
+Vlad S I don't think so. It has been a while since I even looked at this.
i hit a knot & the blade chipped,, but otherwise ok,, and a decent brush machete sharpened easy & held a edge fairly good,, Price not 2 shabby..
These machetes are under $14 on Amazon right now! Just bought one.
Cool
got one, scarey sharp but more importantly can do the job when it comes to task.....well balanced and @ Walmart like well, you may not be able to find one now.
Used it for a some yard work just to test it out and I cut down a tree maybe 2 inches in diameter and it just chipped the whole blade and ruined it
bummer
Hey, Bryan; That would make a great "Zombie"-"Pacifier" LOL Good Review
Thanks 4 sharing. Hoping all's well safe & warm,there.

Why yes it would Terry. And since that show, "Walking Dead", is filmed mostly right here in Atlanta I might need it .
Keep 'er handy !

Kilimanjaro sells the same thing for 1/3 the price at Walmart.com.
Hmmm.
That's interesting. The handle on the Killamanjaro is exactly like the Renegade tanto machete, but the sheath looked exactly like what comes on the Sogfari.
very good video
Thanks.
Good Video

Well, so far this one's doing fine. I guess it depends on a lot of things. Did yours break?
+Survival On Purpose No, mine's bent slightly.
