One beautiful classy lady. If only these women singers today could be a third of Nancy Wilson music/world would be a whole lot better!!!

One of the classiest, most elegant women I have ever seen as a young man. Truly one of the best singers in the world. May she R.I.P.

It's interesting how the most frequently used word describing Nancy is "classy." No jazz singer that I know "lets it all out" to the frenzied degree that Nancy does. Dig her set at Newport, all the way to the last song, when she just can't contain herself, transported into a rare, ecstatic zone that she wants her listeners to hear and feel as intensely as she does. And she doesn't conceal it: at the same time that you'd think she'd back off a bit and give her vocal chords a rest, she proclaims and "testifies" like a preacher man (Rev. C.L. Franklin) caught up in the rapture.
It almost seems a bit too hard on the limits of the human voice, but she strangely maintains control--always. I think it's her crisp and clear articulation that leads to the description "classy. lady." Whereas other singers try to "talk like the community talk" (often a patronizing gesture), Nancy treats the English language with rare command and respect. As fast as she can reel off the words, she's on top of every pronunciation. There's never any of that pretending that you understand what she said when you really did. She makes every word so clear that you can't help but understand--including those wordless moments when her voice seems to join Coltrane's in some outer-sphere of musical multiphonics.
She belongs with no more than 3-4 other singers as the best of all time (O.K., I'll qualify that, with "jazz singers.") If the musicians who play the music took it as seriously as Nancy, jazz wouldn't have fallen on the tough times of the present day.

Billy Eckstine had a baritone voice that was very sensual! Wow, Little Esther was ESTHER PHILLIPS. Incredible. Nancy Wilson is just fabulous: she' the singer that caresses the feeling INTO A SONG. Beautiful.

I felt the setting was little beneath her. Nancy does not do good slumming.

I'm surprised she doesn't mention Etta Jones. Nancy and Etta have such similar approaches and phrasing.
Hard to believe they both arrived at their styles without actually having heard each other in depth, but I guess it's possible.
