What kind of weapons would you like to see in future John Wick movies?
I know you said you'd rather not see a big gun, but a Browning M2 .50 caliber would tear some shit up.
Now that he has used a horse and dogs as weapons, I want someone strangled with a live snake, or maybe pushed I to a gorilla exhibit or something lol
More ICBM:
- Inter
- Continental
- Ballistic (Belgian?)
- Malinois
I'd like to see more soft/flexible weapons. We had the belt here. Like to see necktie, scarf, rifle sling, etc.
Since fanny packs and rubber dildos are no options anymore, I would vote for something food-related. They are in NYC, so why not kill someone with a big apple?
its a play on words for them, his primary firearm is a 9mm which is 9×19mm Parabellum. Love they include the line" Guns, lots of guns" from the first matrix.
Exactly. I was about to say this same thing. His original explanation about it being two words is true if you're speaking about actions. As you say it's 9x19 9mm ammo. Which is not action but a thing.
Oh well.
I'll only add that the 9x19mm Parabellum round was developed specifically for the German Luger automatic pistol back when Germany was still an empire deriving its roots from the Holy Roman Empire, and so the Latin phrase paid homage to that. After the war it became by far the most popular 9mm round, and quite possibly the most popular pistol round of all time.
@@B3RyLI figured the 9mm Luger was designed for that. Granted, same round, different name.
Isn't it also called that based off the mathematical term "parabola" because of the shape of the lead bullet? I dunno if I'm just making shit up but for some reason my mind makes that connection.
@@B3RyL Definitely the most popular 9mm round, but also the most popular handgun cartridge in general. In a few parts of the world you will see other cartridges used more commonly, but overall 9x19mm Parabellum is king.
The gun stuff at the beginning when John Wick was crafting a revolver was a throwback/reference to "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" when Clint Eastwood's character was cleaning his gun and heard people outside his door. The clicking revolver chamber was from the same movie when Eli Wallach made the same motion constructing his own custom revolver.
EDIT: Also, Iron Chef doesn't f*ck around.
The clicking was so he could test the timing of the cylinder
To add to the other comment on your post, what is timing? Which is what he was checking in the beginning. On a revolver this is all revolvers but older styles like the one in the movie especially, have allot of stuff going on inside them, the cylinder is basically the chamber of the weapon which houses the cartridge when firing, on other styles of firearm the chamber and barrel are of one piece so they are already aligned and ready to go but on revolvers the cylinder is the chamber and the timing of it is talking about how when you pull the hammer back the gears start moving is everything doing its job properly and aligning the cylinder with the barrel. If it is not timed properly then the cylinder will be either a little before or a little after the barrel, which can either mean a misfire at best or the bullet striking the side of the barrel at worst, resulting in a catastrophic failure that you do not want happening while its in your hand.
Sorry I misspoke, Yoda. I'll try harder next time.
@@politicalmoderate190 🤣 nice
I think Tuco does that as well
John assembling the revolver with mixed parts is a homage to a scene in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.
Yes it is. Not many catch that reference.
I just saw this reply, i just said the same thing. ;)
Winston's "betrayal" is a ruse. There is a split second where Winston gives a very slight nod to John before he shoots him. Also, he shoots center mass instead of a headshot. Winston knows that the suit is bulletproof for small caliber rounds.
I never noticed the nod. The only nod I saw I assumed was at the Adjudicator since they haven’t gotten to the question of John yet.
Considering the Lady is a professional too, I don't understand how she isn't seeing through that.. I mean bodyshots in that job are nowhere near a guaranteed kill.
@@DrPlonk The fall was meant to be very detrimental and/or fatal from the top of the continental but the series of hits on the way down always kept him from hitting terminal velocity, mind you it probably broke a good few bones he'd have to heal from.
@@DrPlonkShe's cocky and narcissitic.
You are right about the Latin phrase, "Si vis pacem, para bellum", "if you want peace, prepare for war". But it's also a reference to the 9 x 19 mm cartridge, commercially is sold as 9 mm Parabellum, that's how they print it on the boxes. Great video as always guys!
The use of Parabellum (literally "for war") as a single word, related to firearms, appears to have originated with the branding of the 9mm Luger (9x19mm) cartridge in the early 1900s. It was...as observed by George...derived from the use of the Latin phrase "Si vis pacem, para bellum" ( if you want peace, prepare for war) which was used as a corporate motto of the manufacturer of the cartridge, and the Lugar pistol, German arms company Deuche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken. Other rounds and weapons subsequently used the Latin "for war" moniker.
@@jamessullivan4988 Thanks for the heads up, much more precise 👍
I remember seeing the horse kills and just laughing for like 5 minutes straight. In a franchise with so many awesome fights I'm still shocked they keep finding new ways to kill people.
Death by Dobbin...
I grew up around horses. No one in that theater cheered louder than me during that scene. 🤯
My brother was kicked by a horse in the leg once. He said one sec he standing and the next he was flying horizontal through the stall! 😂🤣 He also said it was one of the more painful things he's ever had happen to him!"😂🤣😂🤣
Im surprised the guy needed the double tap from the horse 🤔😂🤣
Those dogs that acted with hally berry are Belgian Malinois, a slightly smaller style or in the German shepherd family. Even climbing the walls is something they are trained for. They are unbelievably agile, strong and smart creatures.
I think with Winston shooting John, he was trying to get him off the roof alive, as he assumed that he'd have the armoured suit on still, so the shots wouldn't do as much damage.
There are some call backs to Keanu's filmography between this & JW2, the part where he tells Winston he wants "Guns, lots of guns" is taken directly from The Matrix when they attempt to rescue Morpheous.
Zero is played by Mark Dacascos. He was an awesome character. Mark was also in the movie, Brotherhood of the Wolf and Crying Freeman. An adaptation of the Japanese anime "Crying Freeman". A Japanese man who works for the Chinese Triad.
1997 Drive Director's Cut and Only the Strong fully displays his physical skills. The man's acrobatics skill is another level. He's married to his Crying Freeman co-star Julie Condra til this day.
@@personatodo had the biggest crush on Julie when she first broke out on the Wonder Years as Kevin Arnold's love interest
also played long haired Eric Draven in The Crow:Stairway to Heaven TV serie (1998/1999). Heard he was a reccurent villain in Hawai 5.0.
Fun fact, the tall assassin at the start of the movie is Boban Marjanović a professional NBA player from Serbia. Great guy, was nearly my favourite part of the movie seeing Bobi on screen
Fun Fact: The Doctor played the Keymaker in Matrix 2 too😀Wake up, Neo. The Matrix has you…😅
Cool to see you guys recognized one of the actors for the ninjas, he was indeed Mad Dog from The Raid. The other actor he's fighting with is in The Raid 2, and he's the villain there. Basically John Wick defeated both villains in The Raid movies.
I really wish they got Iko Uwais in one of these movies lol.
not sure if someone has mentioned this but when Keanu is fighting the raid guys the part where he falls and then they let him up was real they stayed in character but him holding his hands up to say I'm good was real so good they left it in.
So a hot take I just thought of, and is now my head cannon. The entire world of John Wick is an MMORPG. It explains the nonplussed background characters (NPCs) and the thousands of assassins willing to try and take on John Wick, someone whom is obviously a high level PC.
The Guy who played the Sushi assassin is named Mark Dacascos. He's a super legit badass from badass family of martial artists. You should absolutely check out some of his films. Drive is excellent; and China Strike Force is so much fun.
Mark Dacascos was one of my favorites growing up. I don't watch trailers for sequels i know I'll check out, so I had no idea he was in the film. My friend did though, so when we got to the sushi stand I was all hyped and my friend was just waiting for it to happen.
Brotherhood of the wolf is another great flick. And I might be wrong, but I could swear he played the main character in the crow tv series as well as the host of iron chef America 🤣
@@jasonbangerter6437 you're 100% correct on all counts.
I would suggest the superior Director's Cut of 1997 Drive(not to be confused by Ryan Gosling's Drive). He was also great in movies like Crying Freeman and Brotherhood of the Wolf. Only The Strong is another good one showing off his Capoeira skills.
No reactor has done drive and that movie is awesome
Parabellum is also a type of gun
Also, even if they killed the Adjudicator, the High Table would not only just send another one, but give them more resources.
9mm parabellum is a bullet type, not a gun, AFAIK..
@@Wirenfeldt1990 Parabellum P08 is a gun. For the gun they simultaneous designed new cartridge 7,62 mm. Later they redesigned the gun with 9 mm cartridge. Nowadays and in US cartridge and gun are better know for it's designers name Georg Luger.
@@jukopliut no one calls the p08 a parabellum tho
@@colinbrannon2051 don't matter what people call the firearm when the official name is Pistole Parabellum 1908.
@@colinbrannon2051 Yes we do. Especially the old ones. New ones we might slip and call Luger. Parabellum is a gun Luger was man
The revolver assembling scene is a homage to the spaghetti western "The good, the bad and the ugly", there, the ugly assemblies a Colt army and listens to the adjustment of the parts.
The sushi guy was in a French movie called Brotherhood of the Wolf. Excellent movie, I think you both would love it.
He is also the Chairman on Iron Chef America. So that was a fun little bit to make him a sushi chef.
I'm in Love....
With Simone's mug.
That would hold just enough tea to get me through a whole film.
George, you need to introduce Simone to John Woo since he's the originator of gun fu: The Killer, Hard Boiled, Face/Off, etc... Also b/c you said that you preferred melee weapons over guns, it'd be interesting to explore a filmography that became legendary by replacing melee weapons w/ guns.
How can you mention John Woo without mentioning his magnum opus Red Cliff? It's like mentioning Peter Jackson without mentioning LotR
@@drafezard7315 Because the recommendation is based on gun fu. It'd be like mentioning Steven Spielberg for the topic of adventure films but then recommending Schindler's List. Holocausts are such fun adventures! Also, look up what "etc" means.
I think The Killer (1989) is his best.
I think that the most accessible John Woo film (at least for Americans or Canadians who are American-adjacent) is The Replacement Killers. It's the most American-feeling of his action movies and makes for a good transition into his other work for people who've never delved into Asian cinema.
However, I think we can all agree that Mission Impossible 2 can just be skipped in his filmography...forever. There's nothing to see there. 😆
@@samueltheprideofafrikarobi9319 The Replacement Killers was directed by Antoine Fuqua w/ John Woo serving as executive producer. If I have to skip one of the latter's Hollywood films, it would be either Windtalkers or Paycheck. MI2 at least is part of a very successful franchise and has a good score by Hans Zimmer.
Speaking of firearm use in melee situations, have you seen Equilibrium?
While the fall looks brutal, because he hit the slanted roof and then the fire escape, it would actually slow his fall enough that he could survive.
The bald assassin was the Chairman, in all the Iron Chief: America cooking challenge TV shows.
I feel like the increasingly surreal humour in the John Wick series nicely offsets the mounting intensity and absurd-level action - I think overall it helps sell the "heightened reality" of the experience, like musicals, ballet, opera - those more "venerated" performance arts. I love that the JW franchise seems to want to share its love of action choreography and really show it off without trying to be realistic to our world
The scene where John Wick is crafting his own revolver, seems in my opinion, the movie is paying homage to The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Where Tuco is dismantling several pistol revolvers to craft his own in the gun shop.
Indeed,is an easter egg of the movie!👍
It was real cool to have Lance Reddick's Charon have a more active part in the John Wick franchise. This movie shows that he's more than a concierge. It's just a shame that regardless of whatever happens in JW4, Lance will not be back to be in whatever JW sequel they think up. If the Continental is still up and running, I hope they cast Djimon Hounsou as another concierge.
F
"Are the ballet dancers fighters?"
Funnily enough, we're actually getting a spinoff called "The Ballerina"
It's weird to say but I feel like I'm watching this with my friends. Thanks for being yourselves
You know when dogs go from eye candy to action, they've broken through the kibble ceiling.
If you didn’t notice, the old man who starts to stitch Keanus arm at the beginning before time runs out, is the “key master” in the Matrix Reloaded lol
Fun fact about doing your own sutures. There’s a story about an old Soviet doctor who was stationed in either the arctic circle or Antarctic and he got appendicitis. So, he took out his own appendix. Basically, performed his own appendectomy on himself, of course he didn’t take any pain killers
there is no friggin’ way that’s true
@@doctaflo Look up Leonid Rogozov. There’s a famous picture of him during the operation
@@Short_Round1999 holy crap! House M.D. couldn’t even cut a handful of baby tumors out of his leg in the comfort of his own bathtub, and this guy’s ripping out his own guts at the edge of the earth! NATO’s in trouble!
25:08 "Guns, lot of guns" Famous quote from "The Matrix"
Halle had said in interviews that the training she had to do for this was the most intense & brutal she had undergone for any film to date.
George questioned if we had seen Winston fight before, and then said that maybe in his younger days he may have able to fight. I love Ian McShane (Winston) as an actor, he has great presence and a great voice, but I never really wondered about his age as he always seems to look the same. Having looked it up, I couldn't believe that he is 80 years old! I appreciate that they have makeup artists, but he looks damn good for his age!
(Charon) Lance Riddick RIP.
4th film in franchise to be dedicated to him.
Mark Decasco was in a film in the early 90s called "Only the strong". It's mostly involved with this unique fighting style called Capoera. If nobody is aware of that.😁😁
Halle trained at the same facility as Keanu (Taran Tactical) and the owner stated she is one of the best female weapons handlers in Hollywood. There's a video of her and Keanu training at Taran Tactical that's really cool
It is a movie, but people have survived falls worse than that. People survive head shots, shot numerous times, jugular cuts, etc. Sometimes people are extremely resilient.
Mark Dacascos is one of the best things in this movies.
Parabellum is a variety of ammunition George (wrtitten as one word) and thats what theyre alluding to here.
5:55 Him crafting that revolver is a great reference to the good the bad and the ugly
hey Guys great review as always, the asian american bald actor in this film is named Mark Dacascos, hes had a long career, i think you both would very much enjoy a movie he was the lead in called 'Drive" its from 1997, also stars a young britney murphy (rip) and is an action comedy, you will see that Mark was awesome stunt man and fight performer in his day, wish more people would watch this old school gem
I love4 that they use a Comodore as the computer to register the hits.
The two Indonesian stuntmen are from The Raid movies. The one that you two recognized is Mad Dog played by Yayan Ruhian and the other is Cecep Arif Rahman who played a boss battle antagonist in The Raid 2. I hope that one day you two will cover The Raid 2 as well.
I've seen these films many times, but I've only just noticed that when they were typing in the order to deconsecrate The Continental, they were using a Commodore VIC-20, a computer from 1980!!! So weird seeing a computer from my youth in a modern setting.
Latin PARABELLUM para (“furnish") + bellum (“war")PARABELLUM . From Latin adage "si vis pacem, para bellum " (if you want peace, prepare for war)
It is a type of Ammunition Cartridge.
The Luger pistol and 9mm cartridges (some of the most common rounds in the world) are also sometimes known as "Parabellum" as one word, so it's a gun thing.
This is one of my favorite action movies ever. The choreography is brilliant and the cinematography is gorgeous. Great reaction guys, hope you feel better soon George. 🙏
"Guns, lot's of guns" was also used in Matrix. Awesome!
Speaking of the Elder, I think he'd a descendant of Masyaf castle, where the Assassin's Creed games series started.
The one thing I loved about this movie was the knife throwing scene. If you noticed, not every knife stuck cuz it takes a certain finesse to get it to stick every time and in the moment you’re not gonna be throwing that accurately anyway
Don't think you two know the bald actor is that fought John at the end since you didn't acknowledge him in the reaction. It's Mark Dacascos, another great martial arts star during the 90s and is known as The Chairman in Iron Chef nowadays. I would suggest watching watching 1997 Drive Director's Cut, Crying Freeman and Only The Strong to see him at his peak. He has some serious skills not just in martial arts that's not displayed in this movie.
He was great in the double dragon movie. *sarcasm
@@412meatwadjust like Van Damme with Street Fighter, that movie is so bad it's good lol well every star gets a stinker or two in their career. Oh another good one to add: Brotherhood of the Wolf.
Cool fact, the doctor is also The Keymaker in The Matrix Reloaded.
Parabellum in english is written as one word. In latin it's para bellum (prepare for war, in latin). Which is the second half of the entire phrase "If you want peace, prepare for war". However Parabellum is also a type of cartridge used in firearms...like the 9mm Parabellum.
I saw in one of the Corridor Crew videos that all the breakable glass in this movie was cgi. Pretty cool use of it. Clean and safe, and quick resets for new takes.
John Wick is a version of The matrix where Neo was never 'awoken'. Look at the facts, John Wick is a near mythical man of peak human combat skills who lives in a world just below the surface of our own played by Keanu Reeves. The doctor is the same actor who played The key maker in The Matrix reloaded, Laurence Fishburn play a character who leads a gang of people who dress in rags, he helps Wick and even says "we met many years ago, i doubt Mr.Wick remembers..." was this in a past 'cycle' of the matrix..? The lead body guard from the first movie is the same actor who played the lead upgraded Agent in Reloaded.
Watching the movie this time and seeing Winston hold the gun towards the end I’m wondering if the gun was loaded with blanks. He directed John to that side of the building so he figured that side gave John the best chance of survival. One thing I’ve thought about this film is that guy had every right to attack John in the library for the 14 million dollar bounty. That was for killing Santino’s wife and doubled for killing Santino. The hour was for the excommunicado which meant he had access to all services that were part of the Continental until 6pm.
36:12 "We haven't seen any, like, blunt weapons." Well . . . there was the library book. And the horse's hooves. 📙🐎😝
Boban Marjanović NBA player was the big assassin at the library. Love his goldfish commercials 😂
anything CAN be a weapon here my favourite was when he was aiming the horse kicks....loved it
There is the high table with the 12 most prominent crime families, and beneath are some organizations like the Bowery which deals with informations, The Continental Hotels which are like a sub contractor etc.
There is also no point in killing the Adjudicator, they will just send another one and it would only aggravate the conflict for no reasons
In regards to THE GLASS HOUSE as its referred to, the skulls were the cast skulls of Assassins of note throughout Continental History. You can see other little effects below them. A pocket watch in one, a raven feather in another, a straight edge razor. They are reliquares.
Ridiculoously happy the George immediately recognized para bellum. No one ever knows that, I certainly didn't know it. My friend who minored in Latin did, but I was lost until Winston said someting lol. Also funny, George accidentally guessed the plot of the 4th film
I love that they provide an in-universe explanation for why John Wick, 50 yr old Keanu Reeves, struggled against real life martial arts masters. When you look closely all of Keanu's movements happen before any stuntman in the movie moves. He's older and can't match the movements of trained professionals. Still looks super cool
My favorite question and response in the John Wick movies,
Winston: "what do you need?"
John Wick: "Guns, lots of guns!"
Reminds me of the verry same question and response in The Matrix lol
he really loves that line doesn't he xD
Winston gave John a marker at the end of the second movie, saying John might need it down the road. By the rules they live by Winston cannot kill John while he holds an incomplete marker.
Parabellum also refers to the Luger Pistol aka the Parabellum Pistol, as well as the 9x19mm parabellum round the pistol fires.
I was just searching up recent John Wick 3 reactions, so this was a convenient surprise!
10:30
from what I understand, an _Adjudicator_ is like a private detective... they are sent in when something goes wrong to basically figure out who is to blame.
in an environment so down-to-business like this, with military-level record keeping and such a level of organization, there's no need to send a full-sized intervention, because if anyone was to mess with this woman in the slightest, they'd all be done for, as it would be expected that everyone up the ladder knows that this woman is sent here, and here she is, so if she fails to report back, that means something happened to her and someone is trying to cover it up.
compare this with the movie The Equalizer, where the one guy they send in to sort the mess out is at the same time detective and strike team.... that would be an _Inquisitor_
a lesser operative would be an _Emissary_ or an _Ambassador:_ observe and project directives, but don't intervene.
John is wearing armor. So the fall was bad,but survivable. People sky dive with broken parachutes and live all the time. .
That Sushi Guy was Mark Dacascos, star of "Crying Freeman" and "Double Dragon"!
The second guy fighting alongside Mad dog is in the raid 2 which is a must watch
Your intro on the poppie awards was the best. Love you guys!
when John was assembling the revolver he was doing a systems check making sure the cylinder had a proper rotation if not it could cause a jam possible miss fire or ignition of the bullet could cause it to be a frag grenade in the hand
The katana bike fight was a nod to/lift from the Korean movie The Villainess, which is definitely worth checking out if you like gonzo action movies.
My favorite part is her realizing John probably wasn't dead.
I love that the computer they used to update the status of the hotel was a Commodore 64 from like... 1982
Always love to see Mark Dacascos. Loved and still do „Crying Freeman“ based on a Japanese Manga. Worth a watch❤
Mark Dacascos is also in "Brotherhood of the Wolf" and plays The Chairman of "Iron Chef: America"
6:03 John is listening for errors in the chamber placement. If a click is heard that doesn't match the others there is a high chance that chamber will missplace when spun by pulling the hammer thus jamming or damaging the revolver.
Mark Dacascos character dying in a similar position to his Kenjiro Sanga character was a good touch as well.
The building of the six shot pistol was a nod to the Good The Bad and The Ugly. In the knife fighting scene right after the six shooter scene. There was no glass in any of the cases. All the glass was added in post production cgi
I get so excited when new videos drop!! you two are hilarious.
Cool Hand Luke (1967)- Paul Newman 😎
Papillon (1973)- Steve McQueen / Dustin Hoffman🦋
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)- Paul Newman / Robert Redford 🤠
I think they overdid it with the fall at the end by a bit, but I’m so happy that all three movies have been sooo legendary.
Yeah, no way he survived that fall in real life.
Thanks for doing this one guys. Another great video!
You keep saying "Gun-Fu" have you guys ever seen Equilibrium? A hugely underrated but awesome Christian Bale movie where they specifically developed a kind of gun-based martial arts called Gun Kata
25:07 "Guns, lots of guns!" - just like he said in Matrix 1 😎
I just read that a red kangaroo can deliver a kick with 759 pounds of force.
In relation to the horse scene.
Check out the videos of Halley Barry training with the dogs. It's amazing! They used 5 different dogs and she had to train with all of them for 6 months I think before training with Keanu for the weapons.
Parabellum is usually two words but was concatenated for the firearms cartridge in 9mm developed by the Luger company.
'Parabellum' is like 'full metal jacket'. Both are movie titles, both drove the press crazy trying to figure out the meaning, ad both are references to bullet types. 'Parabellum' is a combat round for a 9mm pistol, 'full metal jacket' describes a rifle bullet whose core is encased in a copper coating.
i feel like this channel is going to blow up in popularity anytime now
If you think doing your own stitches is badass, you should learn about the IRL Russian doctor who was in Antartica.
Since he was the only medical professional around and needed to remove his appendix (which will kill you if not done immediately), he got absolutely plastered drunk to numb the pain then used mirrors and did the surgery on himself
Winston knew John was wearing bullet proof armor and he knew he would survive the fall. He was doing what he could to save John. BTW, John Wick 4 comes to theaters on March 24.
Cool reaction as always Simone & George, you both have a great weekend
You watched the eye thing, very impressed!
Wick must have been the most feared grade school student ever since he had a near-limitless supply of books and pencils.
George referring to the "Prepare for war" Latin phrase is "Si vis pacem, para bellum" meaning "If you want peace, prepare for war".
Parabellum in this instance is in reference to the 9mm (9×19mm) Parabellum pistol cartridge.
It was created by Georg Luger and is also known as the 9mm Luger.
The "Parabellum" reference comes from the motto of Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken Aktiengesellschaft (German Weapons and Munitions Factory) which is "Si vis pacem, para bellum".
Funny how Simone mentioned the girls in the office are SGs. The writer of these movies actually says the office personnel are supposed to be based on those very alternative models.
