Seeing Mountaineer in its full glory is like a right of passage in this community lol, great take on the property! I ADORE the old elder-beerman expanded section. See you on the next one!
that one light bulb being out... let's find a TALL ladder and retrieve the burnt out bulb then find a matching bulb returning to replace it. doing it for the art. name the art piece activity process- The Bad Bulb Syndrome. tracking down the exact matching bulb turns into an exorcise of frustrations leading to desperation with extreme and unfortunate actions.
I went to this mall the first day it opened, everything was colorful and spectacular in the eyes of a 9 year old kid. It had a lot of specialty stores, not many people mention the ice cream place Sweet Williams & the pinball arcade Chuckles close to Hot Sam pretzel. It became a hangout as a teenager in the 80's, I miss all of that.
I love this mall. It's untouched which makes it great. They always keep the floors shined. Thanks for another great one. I've been mia thanks to the stupid hurricanes.
Mountainneer Mall was beautifully designed and very attractive, with a great assortment of stores and eateries. You gave a wonderful description of what once was. There is still the Animal Friends thrift store which is open several days a week. As you walk through the mall, it is apparent the management company still takes pride in the facility. The floors are sparkling, the planters and seating are spotless, even the walled off sections are nicely painted. I loved Stone & Thomas, such a beautiful department store stocked with quality merchandise.
This mall reminds me a little of Har Mar Mall in the city I grew up in, Roseville, Minnesota, although Har Mar was built in 1963. Pure nostalgia watching your videos!! I was a mall rat who was either working at the mall or just hanging out at the mall throughout high school. Rosedale Center was my everything. I’m in my late 60’s now and live no where near an enclosed mall, but remember the good times. It’s understandable but sad to see malls disappearing.

North - I have to say good job. You pronounced everything right with my name! NorthPark Mall got an arcade in Davenport. It reminded me a lot of your videos.
as a zoomer, it's so bittersweet to hear peoples' stories of going here as a kid/teen. my primary childhood mall was supersition springs which is by no means dead, but not nearly as iconic (mostly for its newness, iirc it was built in '90) as this mall and many others featured on this show. but I still loved it and while I also love dead malls, I hope active ones stick around or are at least used as adapted community hubs like this one. edit: apparently supersition springs is dead-ish but it's doing better lately :')
EXCELLENT as always North! Your videos are literally otherworldly! I’m guessing you’re next mall in Kansas, The Sunflower state is West Ridge Mall in Topeka? A mall that I’m actually surprised is still even open.
@@brianharris5446 I added that sound effect in 😅 but it’s the tone I wish I could hear when I picked up those phones! Unfortunately, most of them just don’t work anymore..
My favorite for sure, I just stopped listening after 17:55 I was traveling between memories back in the 80s, this one was very emotional I will obssesively replay. The octagonal shape in the floor Im sure is from a bench with a tree at the center, at least those were common back in the day, you can see the original color of the floor
Love Mountaineer! For such a small, obscure mall, it’s surprisingly iconic! Also, am I allowed to look around on Google Maps to guess the next mall? I may have gotten a little curious and explored some on there lol 🙃 Don’t want to ruin someone else’s chances of guessing who actually knows it off the top of their head! Great video North, as always!!!
I moved to Morgantown in 1990 from ohio after getting married in July of 1990,l worked at Stone and Thomas and loved the ramp that lead down into the mall, the restaurant that you mentioned lums was a pizza place with a buffet style bar l used to eat there on my lunch break, right below the mall was a Giant Eagle l used to grocery shop there ,seems like an eternity ago.
Now Morgantown Mall is starting to suffer due to University Town Center next to the WVU Colosseum just 2 exits away and Suncrest Town Center a few blocks from Milan Puskar Stadium ( Mountaineer Field) and WVU Hospital.
Sounds to me the only period in time this mall had a real chance to thrive was the 1980s. Then JC Penny left in 1990 and that started a trend in other stores relocating to the newer mall that had opened . This mall hasn’t got very much going on now !! 😮
The city was going thru UA-cam videos and were issuing warrants for the video creators in 2023.... right before they finally got possession of the mall from Moonbeam to start the demolition. Even now, it's watched like a hawk with trespassers being cited. The kid falling thru the roof was the final straw for the city.
Think of all the businesses and malls out of business in just a few years. All the jobs lost. The next wave will be automating a lot of middle class jobs away. Then the last wave will be AI which will eliminate the rest. Someone’s making a fortune in this and it’s not employees.
The cleaning staff is doing an exceptional job.

there was a pet shop in that section that often had beautiful dogs in the display windows.
@@drewk1514 Going to the pet store was such a part of the mall experience as well, is the pet store's facade still intact in the mall today?
yes, you can still where the pet shop was along the ramp. surprisingly many of the facades are intact, minus the nameplates.
@@drewk1514 Very true! Thanks for the reply
That mirrored lighting fixture in the center of the mall. Absolutely epic!!!!

Those stores sound adorable, I’m only 20 but I still love trying to find whenever the mall is busy so I can go. ♥️😸
It really would have been cool to see this mall (or any mall) on opening day. I'm glad you have those memories!

I agree, it’s such a shame it’s empty now, it is SUCH a beautiful mall. Thanks for watching!

I haven't seen an intact pay phone in years.
I think the octagon-shaped ghost on the floor was an old miniature train track.
