Proof That AFFORDABLE Bluewater Catamarans Exist! [Full Tour] Learning the Lines

  • Manta Catamarans are one of the only catamarans that were built in the USA, and are arguable the only BLUEWATER catamarans built in the states. Unfortunately, Manta is out of business, so there aren't any new Mantas for sale, but the older ones are still strong, light, and bluewater capable. They're built to live aboard and cross oceans, and it's readily apparent in every aspect of the design. We were very impressed!
They're also built for performance, and although most have mini-keels, there are a few will daggerboards. I'd love to see how a Manta with daggerboards performs. It could be a serious contender for our next boat!
This particular boat I believe is priced fairly at $219,000, pending a survey, and it goes to show you that you don't have to drop half a million dollars on a good catamaran to cross oceans.
We're glad to be back and touring boats! Rest assured that we're going to make as many boat tour videos as we can over summer while still practicing social distancing the best we can.

Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way.

I'm a Manta 42 owner so I thought that I would clear up a few items.
While at anchor you can raise the jib using a halyard to allow easier deck crossing. I usually don't bother and just cross the deck in front the forestay and along the big crossbeam. That crossbeam is another nice feature that is characteristic of many Eric Lerouge cats (which the Manta is based on); it's robust and no maintenance vs the aluminum spar used in most cruising cats.
The carpet liner on the walls looks dated but I've grown to like it. It helps to reduce the sounds in the boat and is easy to clean since it's synthetic. If steam cleaning doesn't work you can hit it with chemicals if needed. The water stains on it are a good thing in my opinion as it gives you an early alert to a water leak that a panel would have hidden.

A few things about the Manta. While at anchor you raise the SELF TENDING JIB and it's out of the way. While sailing its always off to one side or the other and you can get around unincumbered. This boat is single handed easily and safely offshore from the cockpit. The engines under the beds have great access as can open the frond door and/or the bed lifts without removing cushions and is held up with pistons.Working on them is easy and cool since your inside with the AC blowing on you! We only run one or the other if we can't sail and rest one the non-motoring side for the quietness and it a bit cooler. The box they questioned in the locker was indeed a next gen 5.5 which will run one AC no problem all night. The wiring and mechanicals on the Manta is easily accessed. The monkey hair on the walls in the bedrooms actually wicks moisture away and provides some noise insulation. The fridge and freezer are air cooled and are very reliable. The helm seat is well protected from the weather but was a little stiff so I put a nice captains chair in that reclines. The bridge deck clearance isn't the best and I thought it
would slam a lot but the design is well thought out and I find it doesn't really slam...its more of a slap if that make sense and I only hear that when beating straight into a headwind. I've yet to see a Manta with crazing. This is one tough boat. 40 degrees upwind is about all I've been able to do and 45 degrees is even better. The downwind sail is like a magic carpet ride.... quiet and smooth. I looked at a lot of catamarans before buying this Manta and there is a reason the following is cult like.... the quality, comfort and safety on the Manta is hard to beat. I would not put a roller fuller up front. the boom jib is great and very easy to handle. As you walk towards the starboard steps behind the tv which swings out, there is storage and also below the tv in the cabinet.

I have to agree with Randi, the Jib Boom makes getting around more challenging.

Thanks, I was just looking at this boat on line and investigating Manta Catamaran yesterday. Great timing. Your video shows that the boat needs a bit of love which the photos did not show. And yes this an affordable owner versions catamaran. It is not old. it is a 2006. For that price you usually get a 30 years old bit up up charter boat with 4 cabins and 4 heads, a useless layout for live abord. I will put Manta on my chopping list now.

Folks, enjoy the boat tours, watch each one. Thanks for doing these, I think they're very helpful. One thing I would ask to change is to let us know what the price is, in the video. A simple disclaimer of, the price as of May 24, 2020 is $X, is sufficient, and I'd bet those that are in the market for a sailboat are watching on their TVs. We certainly are and it's an irritation every time to have to go through looking it up. Of course, the benefit is that it gives those actually considering a sailboat, and who are the bulk watching, what the prices are, and what they can expect, whether they need to adjust their expectations, etc.... Those that are serious about inquiring can engage with the broker and begin the negotiations.
    Thanks again,
    KWL

K.W. Landry , for crying out loud! , watch the entire video! They carefully explained why the put the details in the description and not on screen! It's very simple to check it out . If you watching on the TV then just grab your smart phone and look up the details! And if your are looking for a boat by searching on your you tube feed on TV you can't possibly be serious! Please! Cheers Warren

Hi Folks, Nice have you back. Is Freebie out of the Keys yet? If so, I guess I can discard all that info Don gave me on boat movers. These boats were initially built by Endeavor employees in Largo FL. After a series of ownership and location changes they closed shop at Sarasota in 2008. Used Mantas of this vintage can have some electrical wiring issues. Apparently not so on this boat though. I am impressed you are looking behind the distribution panel. The batteries look especially well configured and installed. You are getting better. Go to the places that are not readily visible and obvious. That will tell you a lot about the builder and the owner(s). Layup was pretty good on these boats with lots of vacuum bagging to reduce resin and weight, but use caution. Not all Mantas were created equal.

haha, fascinating to see newbies first unguided walk-around on a Manta. BTW the way you get from one foredeck side to the other is to swing around forward of the forestay. And only a few were built by Endeavor, most were built independently and to a much higher quality standard.

Manta catamarans are very unique and have quite a "cult" following. Current and former owners absolutely love them and you'd be hard pressed to find an owner that has anything negative to say about them. I've always been impressed with people's loyalty to Mantas and compare their passion to Harley Davidson owners.

I especially like the covered cockpit area - that wouldn’t be cheap to replicate. And the wiring looks to be in good order. You’d do well to seriously consider this, at the right price of course.

You are so right about carpet as a headliner. All the warning signs go up when I see that because it says a lot about the builder. It collects dirt and moisture. You can steam clean it but often that is the beginning of hidden mild and mildew problems. There are many better alternatives but carpet is cheap and covers a lot of transgressions.

I wish we had cats on the market in Canada. Because it sucks to have to pay $2000 to be locked up for 3 days, then stuck at home for 11 days just to get it to BC. It's all mono hulls up here. There is probably a reason, but that config of a boat could be well suited for northern waters being easier to keep airtight.

If you want to have that carpet cleaned them the absolutely best & most thorough cleaning would be a truck mounted steam cleaner. A good friend of mine who owns a carper cleaning biz, actually lived in a houseboat on Lake Lanier in Georgia. Kings Carpet Cleaning!! Lol. Portable units and other types of professional cleaning services do NOT come close to a truck mounted steamers. Its more expensive but does the job the 1st time. Its gets deep penetration with a pressurized hot water blasted into the carpet fibers and then is immediately extracted by a powerful vacuum hose connected to a wand or handheld upholstery unit. A annual cleaning @ a cost of $200-$300 professional cleaning will make your carpet look brand new and last years & years. Be sure to purchase a few cans of 3m scotch guard teflon spray after each cleaning. The pros will offer this at an additional charge but do it yourself for half the price and a better coating. This is key to maintaining new looking carpet in high traffic areas or where spills might occur. The stain will not penetrate the teflon coating so when you do your annual cleaning, all stains come right out leaving you with carpet that will last a decade or longer. On walls, you could probably do every 2 - 3yrs. Its well worth the cost of the cleaning. We've tried every cleaner you can buy at the national big box stores, walmart, etc... and they may suck up some dirty water but even after you went over it thoroughly, a truck mounted unit can come behind you and still pull black water out of your clean carpet. These home appliance type units are good for spot cleaning spills and mud tracked in... i dont own a carpet cleaning biz or work for any companies in the biz, ive helped my buddy occasionally and seen 1st hand the difference it makes. So, im not a salesman... just passing on the info to help anyone who decides to give this a try. You will be so happy you did. If u live in the Atlanta, Ga. area, look up Kings Carpet Cleaning. Mike King has been in biz for over 30yrs and stays slammed without any advertising just on repeat biz and referrals. I dont know of anyone that has ever been unhappy with the results. He may be a good friend of mine but he's the best in the biz hands down and i say that on a purely professional level, not personal.

If you make over a certain amount one house payment kills you on your taxes. Buying something else actually helps you on your taxes and that average cap for most families is over 200k a year. 250k for a boat is just another house payment. Easy peasy.

Glad you are back, I enjoy your videos. Tell us the secret.. how did you get past the police checkpoint to get into the keys? I belong to the Upper Keys sailing club in Key Largo and I have not been able to get there since the lock down started.
I have been looking for a cruising cat so this was good info.

If you find a boat that your serious about, the best advice anyone can give you is, hire an experienced marine surveyor!.
You will learn more about the vessel in one day that most in years!

Hello, I was wandering if y’all would consider a hardship case on freebie. I have a friend that’s a old sailor, but just middle age. He has had an unfortunate turn in his life. Anyway he is now homeless but not destitute and has the money to follow your needs of moving and restoring freebie. He just can’t buy one that he can live on and restore it. I understand that isn’t what your asking for, but I just wanted to ask. Thanks

The white thing ..Think it’s a generator ..the high door step is called “freeboard “ ..
A higher freeboard is better for ocean sailing
Carpet walls are insulation to prevent moister build up.
A bit old style but it works well.
Price wise .. I like it a lot. Nice and cozy

Monk Petite hi , actually the high coaming At the forward end of the cotpit used to be called a bridge deck on a conventional boat , a very important safety factor in an offshore boat , largely forgotten on coastal cruisers and most catamarans these days .....making the interior to exterior flow as one , great for dock queens or anchor bound boats but for serious work a good high bridgedeck is important , you only have to get pooped once and fill the cockpit and you will know why you want one. For offshore racing the requirement is for the companionway to be capable of being locked closed . The modern so-called offshore capable catamarans with their huge sliding doors, while unlikely to be pooped in most situations but if they get into trouble they might be quite susceptible to flooding especially if they did not close the doors! Cheers Warren
