Fellow Louisianian here (with an Ecoboost). Love the tear down of the engine and the build. It’s scary that a bone stock block cracked like that.

My late uncle left behind a 1971 and a 1972 Pinto (amongst other cool rides).
Both cars are 70’s time capsules. The 71 was already modified in the 70’s with a 302/C4 and then changed to a 350/TH350 combo back in the early 80’s. The 72 was modified in the 70’s to just a maverick rear end and the required BFG Comp T/A’s and wide OG 5 slot US Mags. The 72’s engine is a stock 2.0EOA.
    My dilemma is:
    1. Just keep it as is and drive.
    2. Replace the current 2L with a 205 block from the UK and turbocharge it.
    3. Use the 2.3L and the main components I pulled out of a Merkur.
    4. Spend far more than I really want to and do a Ford 2L (to 2.3L) Ecoboost and run a built A4LD with it.
If I do the Ecoboost the 70’s theme is definitely gone and is the money vs power worth it.
    Hmmmm.

Keep the 72 old school and stock. Mod up the 71 and make a beast out of it.

My cousin didn't know my uncle sold the car to me and he watched his dad build that car (and started the build of my dads SBC powered VW) back then.
So I sold it (the 71) back to him so there wouldn't be a problem in the family - as it was the right thing to do. I kept both cars in the his yard even after he passed away. So I just have the 72 - hence the dilemma.
I do like it stock, but it looks fast...and is slow as you'd expect to be.
If I had the 71 still...what you wrote would be exactly what I was planning. However I was going to build a 383 and replace the TH350 with a 700R4.

I bought an assembled shortblock from Esslinger - so I don't know their spec. I have it assembled and waiting on a new flywheel, so haven't run yet, but expect everything to be spot-on. The shortblock was super nice and detailed. Good luck with your build.

2.0 block with 2.3 crank, forged rods/pistons. counterbalance delete, head studs, precision turbo. Its a fun ride with plenty of torque.
