  • Hello everyone
Welcome to my latest book review of The Good Soldier by Ford Madox Ford. Written in the 1900s, get ready for a different reading experience where you have an unreliable narrator, a story line that involves betrayals, affairs, madness, and suicides. Mix in with it a non-chronological and non-linear story line and a host of characters, none of whom are particularly likeable but you glean they have more money than sense.
Have you read this book or any from Ford Madox Ford?
I recommend watching the movie on UA-cam too although the book is far superior. Here's the movie: • Good Soldier- Full- Je...
If you want another example of an unreliable narrator storyline then check out The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro • The Remains of the Day...

So this was an interesting book I must say. It sounds in the video that it was a tedious read but no, that wasn't the case. I guess I was surprised at the behaviours of these rich people in the 1900s who were "taking in the waters" of this town. Do we take in the waters anymore? (Guess some of us go to spa and yoga retreats now).... 🤔 Well, anyway, let me know what you think of this book if you've read it. What resonated? Was there a character you actually liked? What did you think of the writing style? Any other Ford Madox Ford books you'd recommend?

The Good Solider is considered a masterpiece for a variety of sound reasons. As to not "liking" the characters and in terms of the narrative voice being "unreliable" sometimes the most fascinating books are about unreliable characters who are also unlikable.

That makes sense (but gee, it was a hard read at times! Hard in that the character annoyed me....ha ha!! Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. Happy new year - hope it's a good reading one for you!

I only remember that Ezra Pound who was a friend of Ford's proclaimed The Good Soldier the greatest book in the English language written in the 20th century. Pound had a high opinion of Ford's editorial acumen.

Yeah, I think Pound was overstating this book frankly. 😂 That's a big call.

How nice, I've just finished this book a couple of days ago and then you pop up here to discuss it with me like we're in a reading club. 🤣I will say though that this is very well written and interesting style that I admire, but I will also say that I did not enjoy reading this book at all. It was such a slog to go through and I think it was because I didn't like anything about the characters and although the writing was ambitious and well executed, and I really love unreliable narrators most of the time but I just did not like the novel at all. I would have the urge to give this 1 or 2 out of 5 stars but in the end would give it 3 stars all attributed to the style.
The most interesting thing I found was after reading it to hear that there is a theory that John killed Edward (which never crossed my mind once) and immediately that idea made this wretched novel more interesting. 🤣😂Unfortunately not enough to go back and read this ever again.

I didn't care for this book. I re-named it The Bad Husband

Ha!! Ha!! Love it. Love how you renamed it. What a great idea. That, he most certainly was. Thank you for watching and sharing this gem of a title. I'll remember that.
