To add to this a bit - people may make it seem like Brandon quit the "bigger picture" but Brandon is making massive moves in the world of VR gaming. His studio is taking risks and innovating in the VR field in a way never seen before. He mentioned that it is too risky for big corporations to take the jump and put resources into this, and he's right. So his studio is taking it into their own hands. In a decade when VR is main stream Brandon will have helped lay the major foundation for the standard of VR games. As a VR developer myself I admire him greatly. When people say "he went to game development" he is in fact making a much larger difference than just developing games.
Yeah, they mentioned the fact that he's the "create his own box kind of guy". I see him doing that by developing revolutionary VR games and systems.
I envision him becoming "bigger picture" then any of them. What he is currently doing with VR is incredible.

yeah. I get that. You'll have a HARD time changing the system if you're busy being part of it. The easier way is to prove that it CAN be done in a different way.
I can relate to Brandon on that. Not in film, but in life and work in general. I prefer, for example, a private business over a corporation or eating from my own garden rather than a grocery store.

Couldn't agree more. Bigger jobs isn't for everyone. Sometimes a bigger job can be nice, but overall I don't enjoy the logistics of the larger jobs.

It's really great to see the evolution through time. Indeed age and experience is a huge factor to to it all, and it has been beauituful.
I really appreciate everything Jimmy said about allowing people to change and accepting that the things we love can sometimes become a hindrance to the people that create them over time. The nuance and everyday life stuff involved behind the scenes is tragically easy to overlook for those of us outside of it. Freddie and Brandon are two of my favorite people on the planet and they both deserve the freedom to become who they're going to become, and I'm just so grateful to have been able to witness and enjoy the things they created together.
I grew up watching all of these guys, kinda crazy to think it’s been around 10 years... time really does fly.
Well.... Sadly, all good things must come to an end, Thats just the way life works. You can be working some place for 30 years - worked with the same people for 30 years but there comes a time when some uncontrollable and unforeseeable factor breaks up the team.
Be thankful for the times that you all shared and carry on moving forward. Continue to grow rather than wallow in tears of the past - a past that will never come back.
The first part about representation was really interesting. I love how he's so passionate about it. I'm really happy for him that he got to this point. Congrats Jimmy!

Brandon is a true artist and visionary! Loved his honesty - He made the right move imo.
Nobody is right or wrong here, but I will say after watching as much Node as I have, I think Brandon is sincerely devoted to what he sets his mind to. If he left because of a certain circumstance, I don't think it was arbitrary. He may not be the most skilled Noder, but I do think Brandon is contending for most passionate in what he does.
Oh but if you just know a little about Brandon or have seen any of his videos you'd know that he is by far the most skilled Noder. The things he's working on right now are revolutionary

Regardless of people's age I feel like there was also a little of that fear that people weren't giving "the whole story" it was like they expected a scandal. After the way something like JonTron leaving Gamegrumps was handled (a lot of silence and not talking about it) No one could believe a team so tight would split without some bad blood and refused to believe it was nothing more than a career path choice even when they said it themselves.

The cultural and societal impact of growing up with your favorite content creators on the platform. I don't know how many people remember this but Jimmy and Meghan (strawburry17) were dating and had a rather large following online. When they broke up, it really shocked a lot of people, just like when Jessie and Jeana (BFvsGF) split that was a HUGE shock to the fans. Imagine the fallout if Roman Atwood broke up with his now wife Brittney? What would happen if Good Mythical Morning (Rhett and Link) split? Epic Rap Battle of History? Epic Meal Time? (Don't get me started about the real Muscles Glasses)
TLDR: there is always more behind the scenes and the best thing we can do is do the research and don't jump to conclusions about what goes on because at the end of the day these are people's lives. When the video ends and the cameras are shut off, they have to live a life and just like us, figure out how to be a responsible human being.
LOVE the podcast guys, but man that opening sound is painful in my headphones if my volume is too high. Almost blew my ears out twice. Now I know better to check my volume. Please consider reducing that a few decibels.
Brandon wants a 'startup'.. that what it is.. to be able to be in-control and nimble. As soon as they were beholden to other groups then the fun of the projects would not be labors of love or the type of art he wanted to make. They'd be productions. That's why he started a startup producing games.. same sort of buzz.. when it gets big enough he starts anew.

I’m glad Jimmy explains representation way clearer than most people yelling for a person to be in a role.
Yet, until this day I NEVER see Freddie and Brandon interact, yet they used to have a strong friendship. Sure, people change and walk their own paths but I can't see how their strong friendship could become a distant acquaintance overnight.
Well who's to say we need to see it for there to he a friendship? I'd be just as concerned as you for these guys over the years, but they work so close to each other and still work on small stuff with each other I'm sure they all spend their personal time together too.

Yeahh, could be that they just don't care to share their friendship online. But it's definitely a stark and sudden contrast compared to how strong their friendship used to be.
They're both running separate businesses with many employees under different roofs with different schedules. Before they were all under the same roof with a small group of friends/employees making videos like every week.
@@LantumBayFilms Dude life happens, even with my close group of friends (4 people not including me) we used to do a bunch of shit together up until a couple years ago, parties, events, group outings, chill at eachothers houses at least several times a week. Now if we're lucky we might hang out once a week and it's to get food and chat, we all grew up and got jobs and responsibilities, our schedules don't really match up.
Hell even with my cousin we used to game almost every night until 3 in the morning, we talked for hours, I'd chill at his place or we'd go cruising since he had a car. I'm lucky if I even get to see him in person once every five months and we still live in the same city. Imagine now with Brandon and Freddie doing their own thing, running separate companies making products and content with a decent amount of staff with deadlines at two different locations. Shit doesn't work out.

I'm not Brandon, but my read on this is that he's not mad that an Actor is becoming a bigger deal, but rather that funds and resources on a set were being dedicated to something superficial and concentrated on very few people. Not everyone is going to get a trailer and not everyone is going to reap equal benefits. I mean this with no offense to any party here, but Brandon seems like an artist who wants to create art for art's sake. He's an artist with artistic integrity at the forefront. Glamor and 'wasteful spending' is not that path.
And Niko addressed that, which is that even though there are a lot of times when other parts of the set are sitting around twiddling their thumbs, the moment they need to jump into action they're able to. Actors are privy to more specific treatment, which might be a green room or a trailer that makes sure they don't need to be standing outside in the cold for hours before they film because it could literally affect their appearance, or being outside in rainy weather would be exhausting when they need to deliver a highly emotional scene, etc. So I understand where Brandon is coming from, but I don't think he may have fully factored in the historical reasons why things like trailers exist for actors and so on. Niko said it best though - you pay these people so that when the time comes, everyone is able to jump into action immediately and not waste any more time. If an actor's appearance or mental state is affected by not having a place to prepare themselves (and trailers are often the case for this), then how much time are you going to waste if you have to redo their hair and makeup, or take multiple takes of a scene, or even worse, not even be able to get the director's vision for a scene because of extenuating circumstances? Movie making is a complex and in depth process - many filmmakers are artists that want to create art for art's sake, but sometimes a process as insanely complicated as making a high budget product means you need to take into consideration a lot of other factors that can snowball out of control on set if not carefully managed correctly.

I think I can appreciate the functional aspects of your position more with that clarification. There certainly is more of a practical use for trailers than I was giving credit for previously.
I certainly don't expect you to carry a conversation in youtube comments, but I have some additional questions if you have time: I'm completely blind to the production of film, but I feel one of the aspects that'd be frustrating in a more production-level role would be seeing the relatively large amount of expense being paid to certain roles on a film (Actors, in this case) while you might not see those levels of compensation, directly or otherwise. Do you feel like that's a rift that can be avoided or do you feel it's at least somewhat inevitable due to the nature of how shooting a film is done? Have you ever experienced that in your own shoots (on either side), and if so, how would you have resolved it?
Re-reading those questions, I kinda reads like I'm 'trapping' you in a line of questions, but this comes from a place of genuine curiosity, having never seen a working set. Thanks again for your time!
@@DrLegitimate A couple of things that you should also realize - actors aren't the only "high paid" people on set. Directors, Director of Photography, Cinematographers, head of Wardrobe, Production Design, etc. are all departments where the person running the show can cost a huge amount if they're Oscar nominated, exceptionally good at what they do, and so on and so forth. There are tons of expenses with making a movie and they go from the tippy top of director and actor all the way down to the PAs that help make sure everything runs smoothly on the day.
Another thing to realize is that as an actor, a consistent and daily work schedule is not guaranteed. In my 8 years in LA, I've probably only worked approximately 9-10 months of "days" as an actor. Because it's not like I can get up, go to work, and do my job unless I've specifically been found and cast for a role. Other people work behind the camera on film for many reasons, but one I'm sure is the fact that it is a day job. They go from project to project doing their expertise and they get paid like anyone else to do that. They have their own unions, protections, healthcare, etc. Actors are in the unfortunate position where we're not needed every day on set. Even on a movie like Mulan, I probably only worked around 50% of the production days because my character isn't in every scene. Even as one of the leads in VGHS I missed a lot of shooting days. Meanwhile, the people who are there as their day job work every day.
Then when the role is over, what next? Actors go search for auditions and wait to be cast in something else. Someone behind the camera might move onto something the very next day. There's very little job security for actors, and that's a huge part to take into the equation when you think about who gets paid what and how everyone makes a living off of it. I don't think that rift really exists in a major way- most people working in the industry understand the dynamic and the actors that people like the most are the ones who take the time to engage with the cast and crew and be a part of the production. But again, truth be told, all parts being equal, you simply cannot make a movie or production (for the most part) without your actors on screen. And that carries a price with it. What is a movie without the actors to tell the story? If you can learn to accept the base realities of filmmaking, you can better understand how the system as a whole works, and why some actors are seen in a more favorable light than others based on how they treat everyone else on set as well.
Also you might not realize this, but your general worker behind the camera is not privy to the information about how much everyone is being paid. That's how it goes with most every job in the world - you might have an idea of who's earning what, but the reason that information is private in general is so not to spread dissent or anger amongst a group of people that need to work closely and together for weeks, or months on end.

Given what Freddie himself said in Episode 13, I think Brandon was the smarter one here, seeing the big picture ahead of time for what it was. Still a fan of both of them though, of course ;)

Getting into Hollywood is a long shot. Staying relevant in Hollywood is even more difficult.
I hope Freddie will manage that, and I wish him well. But indie games development you manage everything you yourself, you don’t need to suck up to producers and studios, and sell away your vision to these people.
So I think games development has a more long term business value; assuming you have creative ideas and good staff to develop them.
I've always felt as though Brandon got the raw end of the deal when it came to the split. He was left with what was originally the freddiew2 channel, which had nowhere the size of the main channel which provided a HUGE platform for Freddie and Rocketjump to promote what they were doing. I'm not sure if freddie was the true "owner" of the main channel, but it seemed like up until that point they had shared the production workload 50/50 and all of the sudden they incorporated into a huge company that Brandon had no say in. If I was him, I would have left too.
WesMadeIt Brandon taking the main channel would make no sense, the audience wasn’t there for game development BTS they were there for VGHS and for the short videos. Plus Brandon didn’t have a solid plan or anything to put out where as Freddie had a whole team of people who’d put a lot of work into VGHS and wanted to incorporate and start a serious business. Do you really think it would be fair to make them give all that up because one team member decided that he preferred working in a different field

To be upset because Brandon left but being upset at Brandon are two different things and the way they’re trying to justify it seems they’re mad at him and not the situation.
This can be wrongly distilled down to Brandon's view of success is creating amazing products, and Jimmy's view of success is being treated like royalty.
i think it's closer to brandon wanting to create something Iconic and Jimmy wanting to be an Icon. both want to make a difference in their industries.

There have been a decent amount of them in various roles since Jimmy was young. Outside of action movies there weren't many Asians in lead roles. He's not saying that there are a bunch of them, but they were better represented.
The last few academy award winning directors have been latino: Guillermo del Toro, Alejandro Inarritu, Alfonso Cuaron. But yeah actors I can't think of too many as easy.

The question I would ask you is how many times can you count that there was a lead asian character that has an on screen kiss in Hollywood cinema or TV. That number is not very high. There are two in recent memory I can think of, Ki Hong Lee in Kimmy Schmidt, and Steven Yeun in Walking Dead. And of course Crazy Rich Asians now. Now compare that to how many times we’ve seen Asian characters who are stereotyped as the nerd, data analyst, technician, etc. Base point is the racial boundary I’m talking about is we rarely see Asian male characters romantacized or given romantic relationships in mainstream Hollywood entertainment. When VGHS did it in Season 1, that was 6 or 7 years ago, so it was WAY ahead of its time.

Initially I had thought the interacial romance was the groundbreaking part. I was never huge on movies growing up, so I guess I never noticed how little Asians got the main role or a romantic interest.

Well... now I’m confused, do you mean male Asian actors kissing American women? Because Dean Cane on Superman (he is Asian American) and the man who portrayed Bruce Lee in his life story comes to mind. I think Jackie Chan May have kissed a few American women, too, but I can’t think of any examples at the moment.
I loathe trailers, the special treatment actors get and indeed so many idle crew people; we don’t see that here in Europe.
As a Dutch filmmaker, where budgets are tiny a big budget movie here is 7 million euros! This sorta nonsense doesn’t fly. Where in Hollywood there’s 100 people on set, we do it with 30. And I do indie films and commercials where we have 3 or 4 people. And often the cast joins in to help too.
When I worked on a Hollywood production, I also was amazed that nobody spoke to the “stars” unless they spoke to them. They have their PAs flogging around then. For us Europeans that’s just not done. We are too grounded for that shit.

One thing that always bugged me about the representation issue is that people never mention film making outside of Hollywood. More specifically, the idea that it HAS to be Hollywood or it just doesn't matter. Are we just going to completely disregard the works of people because they aren't part of that circle? Maybe it's just my dislike of Hollywood speaking since I wish to see more competition but especially with the internet I find the idea that only Hollywood counts to be strange, but maybe it's because I don't watch movies unless family makes me since I prefer to play video games which has a much broader variety of successes even without AAA budget.
I think the important thing to realize here is that Hollywood has historically and currently been the absolute front of entertainment around the world when it comes to cinema and in most cases TV. The movies that come out of Hollywood are consistently the top box office hits internationally, fuel their movie markets, and so on. I studied film history and I understand the depth of amazing filmmaking that comes from other countries, but when it comes to making an impact in people's memories and culturally, Hollywood is still at the absolute forefront of that. It's not that the other film markets don't matter, it's more that we have to look at cultural impact on a comparative scale so we can see what has what level of influence.
@@jimmy True, but my dislike of modern Hollywood aside I'm cautious about the way things are progressing when it comes to things like representation. Particularly, the idea that something *has* to be diverse or else, but again, maybe I'm biased since I watched more history documentaries than actual movies in my youth before switching to video games and anime/manga instead. It may be because of that I don't see representation as something that needs to be forced; and I worry that the recent trend of trying to force the issue is causing more friction between people. I also admit I have a (possibly) more extreme version of Brandon's dislike of celebrity worship, for lack of a better term, and wish to see Hollywood get knocked down a few pegs by alternative sources, so as someone not much interested in the industry I am a bit of an outsider.
TL;DR: I wish to see things progress more naturally, and the way you guys handled it is more of how I see it working well. It was your ability as an actor that was important, not your race, and that went for the rest of the cast as well.
@@therealrakuster I think the idea of things "progressing more naturally" is what makes things take forever to change. And we're not a country that has ever had that in our ideals or actions. We've always had radical change and progress for the better thanks to people standing up and making that an issue at the forefront. Think about something like giving women the ability to vote - if we had waited to let things "progress more naturally" imagine how much longer it might've taken. How many people's lives would be affected because we waited around for it to change slowly? I think sometimes you have to realize that certain issues are important, and that by bringing them to the forefront, no one is "forcing" anyone to do anything. I think you might have a wrong impression from what's happening in Hollywood right now.
It's not like every single movie executive all of a sudden is telling people that they HAVE to include this diversity and force it, because that's not the case. Maybe those executives are asking "how can we tell more diverse stories that represent more of our audience"? Because again, their bottom line as a company is to make money so their company doesn't have to close down. If they realize that there are audiences out there that want to see more diverse stories (and in the past several years, this has exactly been what's happened), then it's as simple as making a correct business decision that they'll start looking into more of those stories. It doesn't mean that they're actively taking AWAY from other ones, or that they're FORCING something that is unpopular or unsuccessful - they're expanding what they offer because they know more people want to see that stuff. If society that paid for movies didn't want to see it and the studios knew it wouldn't make money, we wouldn't be at where we are now.
And as far as Hollywood getting "knocked down a peg", I'm not sure if you pay enough attention to the media, but we've had plenty of examples of it in the national spotlight: Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Jussie Smollett, Lori Loughlin, and so on.

I don't understand the representation issue, and I don't think I ever will. I'm a Cuban-American, when I see a Cuban on screen I don't go "Wow someone to relate to and look up to." I don't fucking know that person and they are pretending do be a different person as it is. I just focus on if they're written well. I've never gone out and looked for a show or movie that had Cubans in it, I couldn't care less. An actor is an actor. I just want whoever is on screen to not suck at their job. Where they were born and what they look like is so irrelevant.
There are at least Hispanic actors on screen, or enough that you don't feel like you have to search far and wide for them. Of the 4 racial groups that make up America, Asians are the most underrepresented in Hollywood and in general and it's not even close. You wouldn't be able to understand because you don't know what that's like. Just seeing a face that is similar to yours is a huge deal.

Owen Hodson If I remember correctly she is still a scientist or something... but either way she is one of very few non stereotypical roles for an Asian actor. Plus the movie came out very recently, so the casting director was probably #woke enough to cast an Asian person as a lead. Plus PLUS it was partially financed and owned by a Chinese film company, so they needed Asian characters for when it premiered in China.
The main point is that there are thousands upon thousands of movies with hunky macho leads played by almost every race but Asian men, and thousands upon thousands of movies where the Asian men play either scientists, doctors, or nerds. I used to be confused about the whole problem about representation as well, I felt if I make a movie and my main character is white, how is that a problem. The answer is it’s not the problem. The problem is that since the beginning of American cinema, almost NO ONE has cast an Asian dude as a lead.
There’s really no reason for that other than racism (from primarily back in the day) and tradition that carries out the actions of racism, but without any malice behind it. We should move past the norm and see more Asian dudes play more non karate chopping, science doing leads. And thankfully it seems that we are.
