The rutting season, also known as the mating season, is a fascinating time for elk, and the herd bull plays a crucial role in this period. This was the Largest Bull Elk we witnessed this rutting season. The herd bull's main objective during the rut is to gather and protect a group of females (known as a harem) for mating. He will actively seek out receptive cows and try to keep them close to prevent other bulls from mating with them. Bulls can become highly aggressive during the rut as they compete for mates. Bulls also use scent-marking to establish their presence and dominance. They may urinate on themselves, wallow in mud, and rub their antlers on trees to leave scent markings that communicate their readiness to mate. Once a bull successfully gathers a harem, he will mate with the receptive females over a period of several weeks. The mating rituals involve a combination of vocalizations, displays, and actual mating encounters.

Such hard work keeping his ladies together. Do you know what the average weight these bulls loose after rut ? 👍👍😊

Bulls can lose up to 20 percent of their body weight during the rut. This larger, more mature Bull was a little more calculated, however. He seemed to keep most of His size as He did not leave this herd. Thank You Sue!

After watching the videos of the elk rut, I've kinda lost on the cast of characters. Is this the bull with the limb earlier in the season. Also same bull who battled the older bull into the river? Which was an awesome video. Heather

This is a Bull in a different area that we did not show much of until this time. Probably the most Mature and largest of the bunch; He was smart enough not to chase and travel... rather He just stayed in the same place with His Herd for 2 months. He did have some challengers come and go, but we did not witness him in any big fights. Because he stayed put, his Mass did not change that much, so as the Rut progressed, he had even less trouble intimidating challengers without having to fight. Thank You Heather!

Yes, the "Coolest" Dude this Rutting Season. It is so interesting to witness how their Maturity plays such a big role in preserving themselves.

@@WildlifeOnVideo the youngest have a ways to go. I enjoyed watching the behavior and the little wannabes up and coming. Sights and sounds were wonderful and great to watch. The battle was something else.
