Kojima literally thought of everything a player might think of doing. What a legend
Can you people stop giving that guy credit for literally everything that's good and nothing for what's bad? He didn't think of everything, note boards were given to every single person that worked on this game in any capacity for them to write things they could think of that should be in the game. At most he deserves credit for either creating or allowing this initiative. A lot of people worked on this game. This kind of zealot worship of one guy is what turned him into a hack in the first place.

This game came out in 2001..... if people weren't so pissed off they had to play as Raiden I genuinely think it would be considered the best game ever.
Same thing with Silent Hill 2 some people were pissed off that it didn't continue SH1's story (not on the level of MGS2 though)

You know, the Colonel's odd comfort with Raiden doing weird sexual things at times, admitting he understands, makes so much more sense when you remember GW is on the internet. He has seen it all, and clearly enjoyed.
Also when; the shell is gonna explode by Fatman's last bomb, Rose says "WE don't have a lot of time left" I'm certain that she says it cause the AI well knows that it's under Fatman but still doesn't wanna be destroyed
@@B3llyk0 it's a good theory but probably not correct. Towards the end in MGS2, Ocelot says that Fatman was just a preliminary test and actually working for the Patriots. I doubt that Fatman's bomb would've actually destroyed Arsenal Gear/ GW.

Absolutely insane how they recorded hundreds of lines of dialogue, made extra cutscenes, animations all for extremely obscure details 99% of players would never see. Making nearly everything breakable, AI react to the smallest details, this game, 20 years ago, is still multiple levels over cutting edge modern day games, just excluding RDR2 perhaps.
Wtf whoud they keep doing it when 99% players will not notice? 🤣

The actual design document for MGS2 exists online, and I had this exact thought when reading it.
One minute you are reading some super well thought out social commentary or brilliant subtle philosophy behind some aspect of the game design, the next you are reading about "Chinaman" the lost member of Dead Cell...he wasn't from China...

Cardboard box fast travel is definitely one of the cooler things IMO. It isn't explained to you, but the visual clues are all there - each part of the Big Shell conveyor belt has a different box for each location.
I think something that may have been missed out, is that when enemies are doing a clearing they are less suspicious if you are wearing a cardboard box that is the same as other boxes in the same area. If you are wearing an out-of-place box that doesn't match the ones in the room, they might shoot at it. That was how I interpreted my experience, at least. Maybe it was just coincidence.

The box transport was a mechanic in MGS1 as well. If you wanted to go all the way back to the Helipad from the Snowfield where you fight Sniper Wolf, you could....not that theres literally any reason to do so as far as I know...

The nostalgia from this brought up so many good memories as a kid. The gaming industry needs to go back to this style of detail and care for a title.
This level of detail might bankrupt some companies these days though…Though maybe more linear games like these would help save money instead of trying the same thing with all the open world games they make.

@@Maximus20778 I do believe that profit can still be made without the need for scummy micro transactions. As mentioned I think that instead of always doing those massive open worlds we could aim for more linear games like this (as in decent little zones instead of just hallways from beginning to end) so that the work that usually goes into just making the map bigger could go into making smaller zones better and more detail rich.
And instead of always going for the most cutting edge photorealistic graphics maybe something more stylized would help with costs and also keep the game from getting too dated looking for longer.
The problem is open world games. ALL developers NEED to just focus on story and who care if the world is 100% open. I prefer a full story experience myself. But open world does have replayability

I don't know if anyone's mentioned it already, but @25:44 the A.I. Campbell tells you that the elevator won't move with an enemy on it, which seems like a nod to the fact that, since the current mission is a simulation of what happened in Shadow Moses, the A.I. knows/recognizes that the elevator that Snake used also didn't have an enemy on it, thus forbiding you of carrying an enemy on it.
Out of all of them, the one I was most shocked about was at 49:45. I didn't even know there was a door there.
This game was made almost TWENTY YEARS ago, and has more detail than a lot of modern games.

this was one of my first PS2 games, so messing around with the environment and finding out all sorts of cool things was just as fun as the main game itself. Most of my replays were trying to find out all sorts of things to shoot and what happened if I did this or that.
Same. My favorite thing to mess around with are the guards in MGS2. Literally could get spotted, follow them, let them say, “Enemy sighted! Requesting backup uni-” punch them last second, and have them rinse and repeat it(they will kick you for annoying them, though). This thing is actually also something a lot of players did back then, and that's why Raikov in MGS3 was known for getting away with “Punching guards”. Played this back in 2008, never regretted it since.

The level of interactivity wit the environment was pretty groundbreaking at the time. Mgs2 was the first game I remember playing where you could shoot the magazines off the shelf, fruits and veggies, and bottles etc.
Honestly after seeing Hal with an HF sword, now I really want a game like MGR with Hal as the main character set in like a VR simulation.

@Manek Iridius I know rose and Campbell are AI, but look at it this way: at that point in the story, we don't know that yet, and the game doesn't even think to give any hint about it. If there's no hint in serious normal codec calls, the hint sure as heck won't be found in a joke codec call about Raiden taking photos of panties. I don't think the way Campbell speaks in the panty codec call was supposed to hint at him being an AI, but rather that he's speaking awkwardly for comedic effect.

So, back in the day, I played this game obsessively. I looked for every possible easter egg (either online or discovering myself). Yet, I never knew you could "smell" Johnny with the bomb sensor (I did know he's there and you can listen to him). Crazy how you learn things about games decades later.

Tomokazu Fukushima is a genius, Kojima is really a pretentious idiot who takes credit for Fukushima's brilliance but has the saving grace of having a microscopic attention to detail (unless he takes the credit for that too). This is why Metal Gear Solid 4 is a dumpster fire of lore rape that undermines and contradicts Para-Medic's and Psycho Mantis' characters and story arcs, why the Beauty and the Beast squadron have their backstories front-loaded *after* you kill them, and why Liquid Ocelot has a secret base that is a pastiche of Mt. Rushmore.

I remember in my very first playthrough of MGS2 on the Tanker level, I would shoot literally everything in the lounge room. The level of detail for a game that came out twenty years ago is quite insane.

We managed to avoid drowning is actually a subtle nod to how Emmer and Radn did not drown. The voice clip only plays if you manage to avoid drowning in the room before this, and managing to drown will cause death instead

@@Muahaha651 to make different variations of this cutscenes you dont need much effort. You use almost same character animationas and maybe edit a bit Snake's head position and his body, so it will be turned to Ray's position. You need edit camera movements and cutscene trigger point.

One thing I found that I don't think anyone has mentioned, at the end of the game when Colonel is under the effect of the virus, if you die at that point instead of the usual dramatic "RAIDEEEEN" he calls out a very short and almost happy "Raiden~" like he's trying to get his attention from across the street or something so he can say hi
I LOVE that the AI responds to other AIs. Like, it's almost ubiquitous in games that the AI has this collective intelligence that psychically transmits information from AI to AI about the player's location and the location of all other AIs. The fact that an enemy can scare another enemy like that is so fucking awesome and rare in games that it's just marvelous to see it happen here. I love this game. It was so incredibly groundbreaking for its time.
It's scripted. Outside of that sequence, it doesn't happen.

The detail and secrets in this game is incredible and still is to this day. They just don't do games like this anymore! There's so many other things you missed out on too.
This game was way ahead of its time. I was in 7th grade when it came out. Stayed home from school “sick” and used to play this all day.
I'm still amazed that this was a mere PS2 game. The level of improvement from the first one was shocking to say the least. The animation, the well fleshed out characters, the beautiful cinematic cutscenes...I could go on an on in praise of this game. Thank you for assembling this for us to watch!

Actually, that was Iriqois Pliskin who said that. He's on the Marine's and Raiden's side, but unfortunately disappeared after he joined forces with Otacon to repel Solidus Snake.

Wasn't looking at the screen at 1:01:10, heard "I'm sick of this!" and immediately had to look up the voice actor for Emma. You can definitely hear in that one line that she also voices Mandie from Totally Spies. It actually makes a lot of sense for the voice actor to slip into another role like that, too, since the release dates for both are so close together that for all I know, the VA might have been recording for both in the same time period.
3:10 - You can also shoot the flour bags, and it will send flour into the air - this can actually be used later where there's infrared lasers to reveal them without having to use the cigar or thermal g.
For that i always used extinguishers, never even knew about cigars
If you had the camera, the flash could spot the infrared too, as well as block Vamp's paralysis if you timed it.

he also says he is on your side during the sniper part. shoot at him and call him and eventually he will say "RAIDEN I AM ON YOUR SIDE!" then like 2 cut scenes later he says he never said that.
This was my first metal gear game and I’ve been hooked ever since! Love seeing videos like this
I love how everyone hated this game when it came out because no one understood it, but then 10 years later, people were like "Wait this Is actually one of the best stories/games of all time"

I’ve played this game all the way through probably 40 times and saved at certain spots in the tanker and plant, found soooo many secrets gotten the stealth chips and wigs, but this video is amazing I haven’t seen a lot of these funny secrets!!! 😃😂

If you adjust the lighting a bit of that part of Raiden on the strut where he falls through the hatch, you could straight up make it look like MGSV. Lighting in that opinion is already that close.

As we get close to the 20th anniversary of this game, I’m still amazed how beautiful the game looks and not only that..the story and it’s relevance even today... amazing
Honestly I think it's a great medium, games now could look more like this cause it cuts the amount of time on visual detail they'll be told to out do the next year, more space for discs so they won't have to make a long loading time (especially for Christmas), more budget could be put towards story, and with modern tech we could easily do better than this but if they don't try to out do themselves... I'm repeating myself but you get the point

The codec call about Rose´s cooking even has effect on MGS 4. Snake is asking the Colonel who is doing the cooking at home (Cononel and Rose) at first he says Rose is cooking then Snake tell him Raiden told him Rose can´t cook
I heard there is also a reference to this in MGR where Raiden more or less confess using taste inhibitors.

I know it was kind of a gag but I always disliked how there wasn't a followup codec call about the toy raven.
SAME. I remember when I was 6 or 7 playing this and I was walking around a ton of spots in the room and looking at the statue from different angles trying to get a follow up call lol.

@@KOTEBANAROT Honestly I had no idea what was going on with the story most of the time. I was just like "Ay that's the villain, let's get 'em." I played a ton of GTA's when I was about that age too. Played San Andreas endlessly over and over.
But to this day Metal Gear is my most beloved game series. I don't know if it was because Metal Gear Solid 1 was literally the first video game I ever played when I was 3 years old, or if something else about the series just grabbed my attention game after game. I really hope it can recover from what's been done to it.

To this day my biggest question is still how the commandant could not see Snake walking around behind the marines.
I don't know if anyone's noticed this (and it's not that crazy of a detail) but there's a layout map of the ducts for the Nikita phase, next to the Shell 2 core's node. Also the magazine (54:08) is entirely accessible if you destroy the right grates. You can crawl to it via an opening from the room the president is in.
I’ve done like 30 playthroughs of this game and I never knew about the alternative entrances to Metal Gear Ray.

The DanD guy I played this game specifically all the time on the Vita. It’s super fun futzing around in vr missions and the story’s pretty great too.
I always wanted to know how a multiplayer version of the game would be. The odd early 2000’s gun control and the usefulness of traps and effective cover would be soo fun.
