The Real tragedy? There was No unavoidable reason for him to die! There is NO WAY this should have happened if they had extinguished the porch within one minute after arrival with tank water, applied by the Deck Gun which is the Largest and Faster water applicator they have. The attic would have had very little fire and it would have been easy and safe to extinguish it through the top floor ceiling.
This is Probably what happened. The attic was Full of flames that were created by the intense fire at the porch which entered through the soffit vents and the porch roof that appeared to be built into the main roof. Let the flames get up there and the roof is gone. That's what they did! At the top of the interior stairs, there is a landing where the entry doors are to the apartments. There was probably a door with a glass window to the porch and possibly a separate window. The exterior heat could have broken the windows and engulfed the fire fighters Or, they pulled down Too much ceiling and the Pressurized attic dumped the flames on them from above. High pressure into a lower pressure area. The drywall at the ceiling might not have been secured with enough screws and a large section could easily have come loose.
The ceiling joists didn't appear to be scorched at all let alone weakened so structural integrity at the ceiling would have been good. The Building Officials need to inspect the roof structure because in my 45 years in construction and 10 years as a fire fighter, I have never seen and can't imagine the roof rafters and sheathing just Disappearing like they did without burning the shingles that were hanging into the hole. The materials used are definitely in question as this is Not an old structure.
