So you are pretty recognizable, but i do give props to people on the respect to the unwritten rule, If you are in costume, its okay to approach you as a performer If you are in street clothes, you are just a person not putting on a performance. They waited for you to approach them.
I attend events where the performers mix with the audience members the entire time, but we tend to avoid fan girling/boying the performers. Glad to see the Ren Faires have the same unspoken rule.
As a theatre professional, I think this is spot-on. Many people at the faire have backgrounds in performance of some type, and we all silently recognize putting on the character to be seen vs. just wanting to be a person.
The only reason we went to the colorado Renaissance fair was to see jacques ze whipper . My son saved his bday money and allowance for 3 bdays it was worth it to see the smile on my sons face when he saw jacques ze whipper. Autistic kids get scared in crowds, but jacques ze whipper made it worth being in a Crowds and found out that his voice stops meltdowns
I'm also Autistic. Nice people make it so much easier to let walls down and let things in. Even being overstimulated can be so worth it with someone you love.
That is just the beauty of the Ren Fest I have HORRIBLE crowd anxiety (panic attack at ComiCon, not fun) And I have never been even mildly anxious at the Faire. Even penned in, before the gates open, when the King and Queen are greeting all the visitors… not even a little nervous. Just… watch out for the feral faerie king. I will wiggle my way into the tiniest spots
@RowanLee-r2c that's all we, as family and caregivers, can do sometimes, is help them though it. And when you find someone or something that works like magic it's a blessing
I imagine it's also that the outfit makes you more approachable vs street clothes for those that do recognize you; a sort of "in character means good for talking" vs "in street clothes, he's just enjoying the faire" kind of contrast.
I completely agree. When I saw him in NJ (again) this year, his wife was with him after shows to hand out the pins so I said "hi" and a few words, later we saw each other on a line for food and I left her alone, my thinking is that she was on her personal private time then and deserved her privacy. I feel it would have been disrespectful to approach. I'm like that with any performer or celebrity I come across, not that that happens every day, 😂😂!
That's how I see it too, also with athletes. Used to work at a grocery store open 24 hours. A lot of the MLB & NBA players would come in or sent their wife, around 1, 2 or 3 am. Much less crowded and they could just be normal and get groceries like anybody else. The store employees were also told to leave them be for this reason. Help if they needed it or asked, but don't get all weird about it or they may never come in again.
you can really tell Jacques used to be a newscaster based entirely on how he approaches interviewing people. politely and professionally with a clear pitch already prepped, camera at a polite distance. also love how wholesome so many of these people are. ren faire communities are really delightful
Very wholesome stuff. Imagine not having recognized Jacques, seeing this video later, and realizing you'd been duped by his Clark Kent disguise, lol. Also, I've never been to the Colorado Ren Fair, but it looks nice, I'll have to check it out sometime.
I really appreciate you taking the time to take a selfie with us! We came from Utah for the fair, and our main highlight was seeing your show! Hope you, your wife, and your cat are all enjoying Colorado!
His build and posture are so distinctive that it’s pretty easy to spot him in the context of a Faire ground. Out on a city street or at a suburban mall, it might be harder. But he has stage presence, and it seems that’s difficult to disguise with “normal” clothes.
Jack's background in broadcasting really comes in handy for these types of videos. I think he misses it sometime. I'm sure that I would recognize him after the hundreds of hours of videos I've seen. You're the best and thanks to G for bringing this to us.❤
Remember everyone, your clothes are yours, you can add pockets! It's not rocket science, you can do it if you want! (And there's surely tons of good tutorials on youtube)
I started working renaissance festivals in 1977, and it never fails. Put on mundane clothes, and you become almost invisible to the masses. If there had been more people there, it would have been fun to see if anyone approached Jacques out of garb. Still, it was a fun experiment. I especially liked the one who talked about feeling safe to be in their own skin. That's a huge draw for me, as well. Huzzah!
I am glad that you kept in the interviews too, because I enjoyed hearing about people's favorite parts of Ren Faire. My friend wants me to go with them and I am more motivated to go now, understanding the variety of neat things it has ^_^
In 2023, we were watching the joust at the Colorado Ren Faire and Jacques came up beside to watch also. I elbowed my husband and said, "Isn't that Jacques?" I wanted to say HI but also wanted to respect your privacy! Can't wait to see you again in a couple of weekends.
I've seen enough of your videos now that I think I'd recognize you, but honestly the first time I came across a video of you in plain clothes it took me a minute. I was like "why does that guy look so familiar?"
This was so fun to watch. You should do something like this for every Ren Fair you’re at. But maybe only once, and switch it up for which weekend you do it. I’d totally watch more videos of you undercover.
I'm getting some serious Chris Evans vibes with that baseball cap. Pretty sure there's a superhero/villian using whips in Marvel or DC comics, maybe you should apply. 😄
Best thing about Ren Faires and other fun Conventions is that the first time you go, you have normal clothing. Every year, you buy a little something to make you stand out more. As long as you stay true to your vision, after a few years, you can end up with a full out costume.
I Love that you did this! I remember seeing you in your disguise while working the show and was concerned somthing might be up. I'm so happy your were just out having Fun!😊

This video and the opinions on the HBO special about TRF really letting your journalism background shine. More videos about preparing for Renaissance Faires and some BTS things would be great. I followed jacques the whipper and scipio separately for like a year and a half before learning that scipio is HIS cat
I'll be honest, I would recognize you if you came up to me and we started talking. But if we were just walking by each other, I'd never know the difference. I just don't pay attention to other people.
Edit: Also, to be clear, it's the voice that would clue me in more than anything else, so even if we did start talking it would probably take me a few seconds.
I was thinking he needed to put on his "radio" voice to pull it off!! His stage voice is a giveaway.
@@randiskye4444 The radio voice would probably work on anyone who has not listened to NPR in Massachusetts, could be worth a try if he does it again!
I was watching a video of his on UA-cam at my grandpa’s and he was like “is that the NPR anchor?” 🤣
@@randiskye4444 He's said before that his wife hates the radio voice.
Missed it this year... Really wanted to see one of your shows. Hopefully next year I can make it and see you in person! Love what you do.
This is strangely such a feelgood video. xD Been giggling the whole time.
This is awesome! Most of my day was terrible, but then i see that jaques ze whipper posted! No day that jaques posts on can be a bad day.
Ah dang, I knew I was missing out not going to the Ren Fair this year! I haven't missed a season in over a decade but just can't make it this year. Hope you enjoy the beautiful Colorado Renaissance Festival!
I was so happy to have seen your show at Colorado's Ren Faire! When that 9 year old requested 'who let the dogs out' was fantastic!
the buff arms are kind of an easy give away 😅
5:01 that guy in the background😂
I thought this was an on the street segment on NPR...Loved it!
New challenge unlocked: Go to a ren faire and find Bikes Beards and Brews, while out of costume.
