Finally.. You've entered the Jagjeet Singh zone
I don't get how people can make a ghazal singers list without adding the original legends - mehdi hassan, ghulam ali sahab, farida khanum, iqbal bano, nayyara noor 😔😔😔😭😭😭
And mallika pukhraj.
Anuradha paudwal has some great gazals
I think it was indian gazal singers
Ik! Ik! Ik! Even though I like Arooj's version more, I was hoping for Farida Khanum's Mohabbat krne vaale
Because the video is about Indian Ghazal Singers not Pakistani
It's incredible that you mentioned shilpa rao. she's arguably the finest of the current generation. her vocal texture is tailor made for ghazals and she is classically trained as well. sadly she's in an era where no one composes ghazals anymore. I mean the quality of regular songs have rapidly dropped so imagine ghazals. that being said, she has sung a few ghazals LIVE if you'd be interested in them. my personal fave being her rendition of "Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo"!!
AAJ JAANE KI ZID NA KARO sung by Sir Arijit Singh. When I heard it for the first time, I was completely mesmerized. I didn't even know it existed and became my favorite song of sir Arijit Singh also. In his concert given in Rotterdam, he sang it on my request. On UA-cam, you can find it.
I love her coke studio "paar channa dey"
Now I m eagerly waiting for reaction video on 'Hoshwalo ko khbar kya' by Jagjeet Singh. 🤞
Ohh yess a gem
Yes.. 😍😍😍
Gem of a song … must for music lovers
Kindly react to “hoshwalo ko khabar Kya” by jagjit Singh ❤
Me too
Master madan was a legendary singer who unfortunately died at the age of 14. He achieved excellence at such young age that people cannot even dream about. It is said that people couldn't see his success and hence put mercury in his milk and poisoned him to death. It is very sad that such an amazing artist had such a horrific death.
Qala movie is inspired by this
biggest Ghazal singer was Talat Mehmood (Jagjeet Singh was fan of Talat Mehmood), Lata Mangeshkar, Madan Mohan (biggest music director of Ghazals), Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd. Rafi ofcourse..... A Ghazal is a compilation of couplets (poetry / verses) of a person's emotion or a feeling about something... may be love, romance, set back, praise, happiness or sadness particularly...
Also since you guys brought up Oppression inspiring art, thought I'd share that one of my favourite Ghazals "Gulon Mein Rang' by Mehdi Massan was written by the poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz while he was imprisoned during the Pre-Independence era, and ironically it's one of the most romantic and poetic songs I've ever heard! So many singers including Shilpa rao, Arijit Singh and Ali Sethi have done covers of it so I hope you check it out!! 💗
Fun fact:- So Gazal is a Urdu word which has different meanings . One of the meaning is the "First Cry " of the deer 🦌 which is injured by an Arrow..... It's so poetic . And represents the poets first cry when he is hurt by his lover 💕
The word came from arabic language and there are two words seems same but have different meanings, (Gazal) means to talk to women tenderly showing your love, then by the time called love poems Gazal, but (Gazaal) means a deer 🦌 , so the pronunciation of two words is different in arabic.
@@khadykhaled8625 yes, 'talking to women tenderly or talking to a beloved one.
@@khadykhaled8625
Yes, It's from Arabic
@@khadykhaled8625 oh well as I said before the word have different meanings......one of my professor who is a poet and writes gazal at my uni told me about it
You guys should check out Ghulam Ali’s “chupke chupke raat din,” one of the most beautiful songs of this genre
Damnn Right
Love your dress Waleska 💚🖤
Shreya Ghoshal's "Qaraar" with Sanjay Leela Bhansali is an amazing one to check out.
If you want to hear Shreya singing a ghazal check out the song "Qaraar" - music director is Sanjay Leela Bhansali
This gazal oh my god wow
Truee! Qaraar is a gem.
Waleska is looking pretty so 90s era Bollywood vibe
Finally!!! I have been requesting you to graduate to Ghazals for some time here...I think you should really hear Ghazals from Pakistan as well (Musically, it's all one) - especially the masters like Mehdi Hasan Saab , Ghulam Ali Saab etc. I have been fortunate enough to be at multiple ghazal concerts of Jagjith Singh Ji and one concert of Ghulam Ali Saab , you can't just express the feeling in words and especially as someone interested in 'Tabla' you would appreciate those to a large level...I would highly recommend you do at least one Podcast on some of the live performances of these legends...I have nothing but respect for the singers of this generation like Arijith, Shreya etc. but when you hear some of these true greats, you will realize that the word 'great' has been very easily thrown around these days...
Manna Dey is an outstanding singer. Very few people knows about him as his standard is not everybody 's, anybody's reach. You guys should and must listen to his songs.🙏
Gazals is one of those genres that can transcend to another world. My absolute favourite after Abhanga.
Top 100 songs of Mohammad Rafi, kishore kumar and Lata Mangeshkar
Gazal is a style of singing where the lyrics are very poetic and you need only voice, tabla and harmonium to accompany it. ❤
Master Madan (1927-1941) ...just 14 years of age and 8 recorded songs....a great loss.
Ghazals are songs of unrequited love stories. One must understand the lyrics in it's original form to actually enjoy ghazals. Its 80% lyrics and 20% music
For Shreya to have made this list of iconic and legendary ghazal singers, shows her versatility and how phenomenal she is. Breaking barrier from the old generation to the modern era 👌
In gazal (Gazul) there is poetry of love. In this they play on words. There is a teasing, sarcasm, describing beauty, enticing, provoking. Very thought-provoking. Can be taken spiritually as well which transcends one to a different level. In gazals one is complaining through it, accepting , answering sharing grievances etc. If only you could understand the words. It is phrased in such a way that it melts your heart.
Ghazal is Comfort Food for Soul. The main emphasis is on poetry
I think this is one of my favorite videos of yours. Y'all are deep appreciators of music. Off to listen to some of these artists I was not aware of!
I am happy you would listen to some of the greatest singers like Master Madan, K.L. Sahgal, Talat Mahmood, Manna Dey and Begum Akhtar cause of this episode. You liked the gazal my Mohammad Rafi sahab too and that was one of the Composition of great Madan Mohan sahab for his private music album.
Koi Fariyaad (Tum Bin 2001) by Jagjeet Singh made me a fan of him and Ghazal songs... WOW!! ♥ ♥ He is knows as the King of Ghazals 👑 👑
Edit : his name is properly pronounced as *JAGJEET* - Jug.Jeet & _not Jaggit_ which means Jag: The world, Jeet: To win/winner - The one who won the world or World winner 🌐 🌐☺
These were Indian Gazal singers and there were many Pakistani Gazal singers too which were hugely popular in India like Mehendi Hassan, Gulam Ali, Farida Khanam etc
Finally!!! My favourite genre ❤ please check out more of Hariharan he is outstanding
Efra as you like percussion- there is a very famous collaboration between Zakir Hussain and Hariharan called “Jiya jiya na jiya” or “Mariz E ishq” (same song)
Ajay-Atul special? you could include Yad Lagla, and Bai ga...
Ghazal is a very complex art n poetry form. Ghazal is actually that art form of poetry where each 2 couplets talks about different subject. So its possible that one couplet talks about beloved's cruelty. 2nd may talk about social evils. 3rd may talk about religion or spirituality n might be addressing God. So ghazal is a complex form where the only thing joined it is the rythem n symmetry of structure but the lyrics will have a sea of topics.
Even if it’s during your own time and not a reaction video, I strongly encourage you guys to listen to Sardool Sikander. He is the best Punjabi singer of all time and has the most beautiful voice I’ve ever heard. He unfortunately passed a few years ago at the age of 60 but both of his sons are also supremely talented. His songs are amazing but if you really want an idea of his true talent they don’t do him justice. Please just search Sardool Sikander Mehfil, another word for jam session basically, and fall down the rabbit hole. He writes and composes as well and imo his talent is second only to Ustad NFAK. I can recommend specific videos if your interested but I really hope you check him out!
Oh please please react to Shilpa Rao singing ghazals. She sings a lot of them. Her voice is made for Ghazals! it's beautiful.
I love her coke studio Pakistan "paar channa dey"
You should check out 'Rishton ke saare manzar' ghazal by Arijit. It's even in a video where he is performing it. I think he very well deserves to be in this list as he has sung some ghazal songs too
Ghazals are poetry in motion.
My respect just went up multifold for efra bro for speaking his mind out. 😆😆😆
Master Madan was a radio artist too. They would sing live on radio
He was extremely popular and he died of poisonings 14 (according to my elders), perhaps by a jealous rival. The mystery was never investigated . He sang live at music festivals/ gatherings too.
His ghazals are extremely popular - choice poet and composition
New ghazal singing
Zeeshan Ali
Radhika Chopra (also has a several.part series explaining the genre, illustrated in her beautiful voice). I don't know if that series has been subtitled.
Mallika Pukhraj
Farida Khanum
Iqbal Bano
Ustad Amanat Ali Khan
Abida Parveen etc etc
A ghazal is very strict form of poetry, written in couplets with well defined boundaries - anything outside that form is not ghazal.
Love each and every video of yours.
Thanks to this video I have new adittion to my playlist
Talat mahmood with his velvet voice is India's greatest ghazal singer and the best
WALES...GHAZAL IS DEEPLY LOVE ROMANTIC BUT SAD SONG SOMETIMES BEAUTY PRAISING OF HIS LOVED ONE
Please don’t review any ghazal 11:14 video without transcripts. This genre is about conveying of emotions rather than musicality. And yes, you will walk on heaven beneath your feet if you delve deeper.
I totally agree with you Efra. I like your taste in music.
LOVE THE VIBE WE NEED A WHOLE PODCAST ON GHAZALS,
LETS CREATE SOMETHING LIKE "CHAI WITH GHAZALS" .... VIBE 🤞
The best combination
Oh my god. That's so funny. I was reading about Begum Akhtar and her contribution to Ghazals from Lucknow Gharana. Her life story is no less than an inspiration for women and anyone who wants to do something in music. She is from my resident city Lucknow which has always been associated with Ghazals and Urdu music from old times.
ghazal as a genre is kind dying stage as there are no more ghazal singer in both in india but pakistan still has few of them though which positive thing id say but its one of the best genres which has beautiful lyrics (poetry). efra you have great taste in music.
Ghazal is a very eloquent form of poetry. N it has highest refined language used (mostly urdu) n though some urdu poets of past wrote ghazals in persian too. But anyhow the vocabulary n elegance of language is of highest order
"Tum itna ju muskra rha hu" ❤☺️
You return home and you are tired and beat, you sit down ,want to relax, with a drink and not in your hand, you want to listen to ghazals, which usually is poetry sung based on romance, feelings, thoughts, tragedy or the beloved. With the beautiful voices of Jagjit Singh, manhar Udhas, Bhupendra Singh, Hariharan. penaaz masani
You should check the king of ghazal " Mehdi Hassan.
You should do a Ghazal Special hour-long video.
few ghazal songs i’ll recommend listening/reacting
rafta rafta wo mari by mehdi hasan
humko kiske gham ne maara by ghulam ali khan
mere humnafes by begum akhtar.
I am so glad to see Ahmed Hussain and Mohammed Hussain in this list. They are my favourite Ghazal singer duo. They are enjoyed by my family as well and we have all their albums..
Feature Friday gazal
The etiquette of listening to a Ghazal is that you remain silent until it is finished. Only you can praise and appreciate in a slow tone. After this you can discuss.
And thank you so much for the video and welcome to the ghazals world. 🤗🙏
So about Master Madan...
He was a child prodigy from Punjab. At a young age, he stunned everyone with his voice. Even before he turned 18, he was already well-known and even started recording for studios. Remember, this was 1930s - sound records were just a recent thing in India.
Alas, he was a victim of mercury poisoning (allgedly, by someone jealous of him) and died at just the age of 14. But such was his immese talent that what he did in 10 years is remembered almsot a century later.
If someone ask me to choose just one gener of music to listen for ny whole life.. I would definitely choose Gazal. It's pure magic. It's sp sad now days people are not making new gazals.. Even music industry is not promoting it. It makes me sad 😢
Master Madan died in the age of 15,it is said that a fellow singer gave mercury in his milk, that took his life,he recorded 8 songs, the recording company was famous , world renowned HMV,(his master's voice)
I think you guys should also react to our religious or bhakti songs old and new both types as it is festive season 😄
Guys, you should react to some MOHAMMED RAFI classics, like , kya hua tera wada, and chura liya hai tumne jo dilko, and shirdiwali sai baba...
i want a hug from waleska
My favourite movie of ghazal is Razia sultan, Ahista Ahista ,Umraojan old version,Trishul , Bazaar.
"That's the kind of song I'd delete!!"
I agree!!
No Gulam Ali and Mehndi Hasan! How can anyone miss these 2 greatest legends who made ghazal popular among masses
In india kids are addressed as master.
They missed Gulam Ali, mehandi Hassan, maqbool Sabri,Nfak
GHAZAL is an emotion.
Lata mangeshkar ji said about Mehdi Hassan sahib that God lives in his throat. I think both of you will really enjoy ghazals sung by him
Efra : Honey Singh...
Everyone: Trash TRASH
Gazal universes❤
Don't put Mohammad Rafi with others other than Lata. He is astronomically better than others.
Hariharan is better when it comes to ghazals
Some singers stayed within the classical ambit. But when they ventured out, gazhals, thumri, dadra, qawalis were the lighter style of music as compared to pure classical singing. If the singer venture further into lighter form of music then he playback singing for movies. So to see artist like Lata Mangeshkar or Manna Dey, Mohammed Rafi, Roop Kumar Rathod are better known for the film songs but the artistry in gazhals is undountedly awesome
ENJOOOOOOOOOY
Begum Akhtar is my fav ❤
My favourite ghazal is from music director Khayyam saahab and Lata mangeshkar due songs. Asha bhonsle sings like Umraojan is another masterpiece
master is title for young boy in india, same in england like mister for adult, like master bruce wayne
I'm honestly not familiar with ghazali's song, but I quite enjoyed it. But for certain genres of Indian songs, qawali songs are one of my favorites such as those sung by talented singers Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Nusrah Fateh Ali Khan, and others that I may not know about.
Ahh finally my favourite genre.... Listen to "Umrao Jaan" and the magic of Khayyam and Asha Bhosle will mesmerize you
of late I have really been loving ghazal renditions by Pratibha Singh Baghel ❤
FINALLYYYYYYYYY!!!!
Rafi sahab is the yardstick in any genre.
Actually Master Madan was only 14 years old when he expired that's why he could record only 8 songs. He was a child prodigy, murdered by his one of the rival using poison. It's a sad story
You guys should dig some pakistani ghazals too. Though jagjeet is my fav too but we have many who were much above his level. So listen ghazals of Ghulam Abbas, Mehdi Hassan, Iqbal Bano, etc n maybe of Farida Khanum too
You guys still have no idea what is a ghazal. Ghazal is a form of poetry which took its shape when farsi (persian) met urdu. In 17th 18th century all great poets of urdu language wrote ghazals. Yes they didnt write songs at that time, they wrote ghazals n then held programs like mushaira where they sit together n each utter his ghazal. So from there the trend of reading their ghazals with rythem started. But in reality its actually only poetry.
Ghazal in urdu means "to talk with women". Since in those times, due to parda (segrgation) culture, men speaks in a different tone with men n to talk with women means to win hearts of beloved thru praising them or praise their beauty or confess their love.
But in reality, ghazal doesnt revolve around love n romance. Ghazal has great philosophy in it.
Its rare to see a ghazal where all couplets are towards a same topic. With advent of modern times the trend of singing ghazals in a song like style was evolved n which ur witnessing otherwise see sometimes some mushaira (with captions) n see how ghazals are presented without singing.
Ghazals were stuff that my dad would listen to when I was young and to me it was the most sad boring music ever 😂 but as I've gotten older, I don't mind them as much.
Two things I observe.
1. 2:02, (where they pause the video) the name of Roop Kumar Rathore becomes Kumar Rat (lol)
2. The Name of The Great Anup Jalota in the original video is written wrongly.
Listen to Qaraar by Shreya composed by Sanjay Leela Bhanshali! One of the best ghazals of the recent times!
I think for ghazal please listen to Ghulam Ali and Mehdi Hassan from Pakistan.
Beauty of a ghazal lies in the way it can convey complex emotions so very easily in a couple of lines. The lyrics are the heart and soul of a ghazal. The words are very intricately, innovatively and intelligently strewn together. Understanding a ghazal is as much a cerebral experience as it is a musical one. Each ghazal writer had his/her unique signature style and topics.
For example quoting Mirza Ghalib,
tere waade par jiye ham to ye jaan jhoot jaanaa
ke khushee se mar na jaate agar 'eitabaar hota
It’s not true that I live in hope
of the promises made by you;
For, would not I die of joy,
If I thought them to be true (faith in your promise)
King of Gazals.....Jagjit Singh What an era.....Gazals...❤️❤️❤️❤️
Efra i really respect you for being honest about what you liked or disliked about songs ❤
You are pretty funny btw😂
4:52 lol, w efra for not liking honey singh , we are with u on this one lmaoo
Mehdi Hassan, Noor Jean, Iqbal Bano and many many more giants on whose shoulders the singers featured here have stood on
Jagjjit Singh's voice is like honey. Chitra Singh is his wife.
yesss shilpa has done ghazals
Begum Akhtar 🤌🏾🤌🏾🤌🏾🤌🏾🤌🏾😮😮😮😮
Traditionally Ghazal singing meant use of very very few musical instruments.
If you are into Ghazals then some of the stalwarts are, Mehdi Hasan, Fareeda Khanum, Ustad Ghulam Ali, and Amanat Ali khan.
Ghazal 👆👌🎼🎼
I think you should react to 'tu hai kahan'. it's lyrics is really awesome
Now that you've stepped foot on Ghazals, do a Feature Friday podcast on Indian and Pakistani ghazals. Some of the OG ones are Pakistani, like Mehndi Hasan, Nayyara Noor, Ghulam Ali etc etc. Waiting for this one, Efra and Waleska❤️
