    It's incredible that you mentioned shilpa rao. she's arguably the finest of the current generation. her vocal texture is tailor made for ghazals and she is classically trained as well. sadly she's in an era where no one composes ghazals anymore. I mean the quality of regular songs have rapidly dropped so imagine ghazals. that being said, she has sung a few ghazals LIVE if you'd be interested in them. my personal fave being her rendition of "Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo"!!

      AAJ JAANE KI ZID NA KARO sung by Sir Arijit Singh. When I heard it for the first time, I was completely mesmerized. I didn't even know it existed and became my favorite song of sir Arijit Singh also. In his concert given in Rotterdam, he sang it on my request. On UA-cam, you can find it.

    biggest Ghazal singer was Talat Mehmood (Jagjeet Singh was fan of Talat Mehmood), Lata Mangeshkar, Madan Mohan (biggest music director of Ghazals), Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd. Rafi ofcourse..... A Ghazal is a compilation of couplets (poetry / verses) of a person's emotion or a feeling about something... may be love, romance, set back, praise, happiness or sadness particularly...

    Master madan was a legendary singer who unfortunately died at the age of 14. He achieved excellence at such young age that people cannot even dream about. It is said that people couldn't see his success and hence put mercury in his milk and poisoned him to death. It is very sad that such an amazing artist had such a horrific death.

    Also since you guys brought up Oppression inspiring art, thought I'd share that one of my favourite Ghazals "Gulon Mein Rang' by Mehdi Massan was written by the poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz while he was imprisoned during the Pre-Independence era, and ironically it's one of the most romantic and poetic songs I've ever heard! So many singers including Shilpa rao, Arijit Singh and Ali Sethi have done covers of it so I hope you check it out!! 💗

    Fun fact:- So Gazal is a Urdu word which has different meanings . One of the meaning is the "First Cry " of the deer 🦌 which is injured by an Arrow..... It's so poetic . And represents the poets first cry when he is hurt by his lover 💕

    • @khadykhaled8625
      @khadykhaled8625 7 місяців тому +2

      The word came from arabic language and there are two words seems same but have different meanings, (Gazal) means to talk to women tenderly showing your love, then by the time called love poems Gazal, but (Gazaal) means a deer 🦌 , so the pronunciation of two words is different in arabic.

    Finally!!! I have been requesting you to graduate to Ghazals for some time here...I think you should really hear Ghazals from Pakistan as well (Musically, it's all one) - especially the masters like Mehdi Hasan Saab , Ghulam Ali Saab etc. I have been fortunate enough to be at multiple ghazal concerts of Jagjith Singh Ji and one concert of Ghulam Ali Saab , you can't just express the feeling in words and especially as someone interested in 'Tabla' you would appreciate those to a large level...I would highly recommend you do at least one Podcast on some of the live performances of these legends...I have nothing but respect for the singers of this generation like Arijith, Shreya etc. but when you hear some of these true greats, you will realize that the word 'great' has been very easily thrown around these days...

    In gazal (Gazul) there is poetry of love. In this they play on words. There is a teasing, sarcasm, describing beauty, enticing, provoking. Very thought-provoking. Can be taken spiritually as well which transcends one to a different level. In gazals one is complaining through it, accepting , answering sharing grievances etc. If only you could understand the words. It is phrased in such a way that it melts your heart.

  • @florad629

    Ghazal is a very complex art n poetry form. Ghazal is actually that art form of poetry where each 2 couplets talks about different subject. So its possible that one couplet talks about beloved's cruelty. 2nd may talk about social evils. 3rd may talk about religion or spirituality n might be addressing God. So ghazal is a complex form where the only thing joined it is the rythem n symmetry of structure but the lyrics will have a sea of topics.

    Even if it’s during your own time and not a reaction video, I strongly encourage you guys to listen to Sardool Sikander. He is the best Punjabi singer of all time and has the most beautiful voice I’ve ever heard. He unfortunately passed a few years ago at the age of 60 but both of his sons are also supremely talented. His songs are amazing but if you really want an idea of his true talent they don’t do him justice. Please just search Sardool Sikander Mehfil, another word for jam session basically, and fall down the rabbit hole. He writes and composes as well and imo his talent is second only to Ustad NFAK. I can recommend specific videos if your interested but I really hope you check him out!

    New ghazal singing
    Zeeshan Ali
    Radhika Chopra (also has a several.part series explaining the genre, illustrated in her beautiful voice). I don't know if that series has been subtitled.
    Mallika Pukhraj
    Farida Khanum
    Iqbal Bano
    Ustad Amanat Ali Khan

    So about Master Madan...
    He was a child prodigy from Punjab. At a young age, he stunned everyone with his voice. Even before he turned 18, he was already well-known and even started recording for studios. Remember, this was 1930s - sound records were just a recent thing in India.
    Alas, he was a victim of mercury poisoning (allgedly, by someone jealous of him) and died at just the age of 14. But such was his immese talent that what he did in 10 years is remembered almsot a century later.

    Beauty of a ghazal lies in the way it can convey complex emotions so very easily in a couple of lines. The lyrics are the heart and soul of a ghazal. The words are very intricately, innovatively and intelligently strewn together. Understanding a ghazal is as much a cerebral experience as it is a musical one. Each ghazal writer had his/her unique signature style and topics.
    For example quoting Mirza Ghalib,
    tere waade par jiye ham to ye jaan jhoot jaanaa
    ke khushee se mar na jaate agar 'eitabaar hota
    It’s not true that I live in hope
    of the promises made by you;
    For, would not I die of joy,
    If I thought them to be true (faith in your promise)

    Some singers stayed within the classical ambit. But when they ventured out, gazhals, thumri, dadra, qawalis were the lighter style of music as compared to pure classical singing. If the singer venture further into lighter form of music then he playback singing for movies. So to see artist like Lata Mangeshkar or Manna Dey, Mohammed Rafi, Roop Kumar Rathod are better known for the film songs but the artistry in gazhals is undountedly awesome

    Now that you've stepped foot on Ghazals, do a Feature Friday podcast on Indian and Pakistani ghazals. Some of the OG ones are Pakistani, like Mehndi Hasan, Nayyara Noor, Ghulam Ali etc etc. Waiting for this one, Efra and Waleska❤️

    Please react to Ali Sethi's music!! He is revolutionising and repopoularising the ghazal and Sufi genre in ways I'd only dreamed of (I grew up on Jagjit Singh's music) What's better is that he's coming to the UK soon (I'm seeing him in Manchester on the 17th and I can't wait) so I'd encourage you to go if you have the chance as well!💗
