This is a very clear and helpful video. I am the daughter of a 97 year old in assisted living. The caregivers (who are not PT or OT) do not seem familiar with these tools. So I am trying to fill in that gap. Your video would be even more helpful if it showed your patient walking and how you could stabilize him by hanging on to the gait belt. We need to see these tools not just put onto and off of the patient but IN USE. Thanks so much! Nancy in Maryland
That doesn’t sound right… nor does it sound safe. Depending on the level of assisted living, all caregivers at professional facilities (regardless of state) are MANDATED to use these tools for safety reasons. I would look into the facility your mother is living in. A lot of these places are notorious for being negligent.
Video could have been better if someone with some camera presence was doing the video. I am pretty certain adjusting once and unstable individual is up is not safe to do without falling which the belt is meant to prevent? !
SHE SAYS SOMETHING VERY IMPORTANT TO TAKE NOTE OF.... A GAIT BELT IS NOT USED TO HELP YOU LIFT A PATIENT! It may feel like it is, because you will ha e a better grip. But do not use a gait belt with that in mind... YOU CAN EASILY HURT YOURSELF IF PATIENT LOSES BALANCE, I PERSONALLY THREW MY BACK OUT, MAKING SURE THAT MY PATIENT DID NOT FALL WHEN THEY LOST BALANCE SUDDENLY. I PROTECTED THEM, BUT AT THE COST OF MY OWN INJURY. This was one of the best gait belt videos on UA-cam imo.
Very helpful. Your step by step illustration is much better than other U-tube tutorials that assume that you already have the basic knowledge that you need. Thank You very much.
Thank you so much for this channel! I am an HH OT in Texas and enjoy your content. I am finding it challenging to educate patients AND agencies on all the ways OT can help in the home setting. Thank you again!
Excellent Videos for using gait belt!! Thank you SO MUCH... I just have one question please. My Mom (who is 87) fell and has a compression fracture in her lower back. In that case, would it be best to put it on higher up? (like your other video shows) across her chest area and/or under the arm pits. YES??
Thank you for you videos. They are really great! Can you make one on assisting the elderly up and down stairs. My dad uses walking sticks for balance and needs just a little assistance lifting his weight as he goes up. I have been assisting him by holding has arm under his arm pit but dont want to hurt him. Im not sure a gait belt is appropriate for slight lifting. Also a lot of other videos show being in front of the person going backwards down the stairs. This seems like a huge fall risk. Being on his side going down forward seems safer. Any advice? Thanks
Is this the appropriate placement for a gate belt when someone who trunk control has improved but All the way there and the person wants to practice independent transfers
I was asked to find a nylon gait belt that is easy to clean for use in a hospital. We have a smooth nylon one, but it is much less flexible than the gait belt you're using in the video, and the staff don't like it because it's difficult to adjust. Any suggestions?
Gait belts really shouldn't be used to "lift" someone who is dependent or provides very limited assistance. They can be used to reposition someone if the individual can be of some assistance and the individual doing the assistance can position the belt safely (not putting tons of pressure on any part of the patients body).
You mentioned that a gait belt is not meant to lift but the instruction I have from the gait belt I bought literally says “You are now ready to safely left, walk with or transfer the resident.” I guess you meant like a lift off a persons feet as they would with a crane?
Question: if they are not lifting tool why the title is transfer belt. The black fancy belt can be used as transfer belt. It helps for lifting and transferring the patient from wheelchair to bed, bed to wheelchair.
Same question. Since the surface of our arms and hands are smaller than the belt, it seems safer regarding the diffusion of pressure on a larger surface.
Gather from your teaching one should never use the gait belt to pull them up from front. This is what I've been told is proper but I don't agree according to my training.
That gait belt is way too loose. Most people who need one will require much more assistance than what you're showing and mostlikely won't be able to readjust the belt once up.
Due to HIPPA compliance, it is very difficult to utilize an actual patient for these instructional videos. I try and demonstrate the process clearly so it can be replicated within reason for the unique situations faced by caregivers.

Please elaborate on this, thank you.
Thank you for the demonstration! As a person who is just learning to care for an elderly family member, this is very helpful information.

Thanks, literally on break on a noc shift, new to being a caregiver, this was helpful.

Thanks for the video.
I have watched other gait belt videos. Yours is one of the best. It answered the questions I had about use and not lifting.
Going on my first caregiver visit thank you.

Hola. needed to remember gait belt use. Hope to see your videos again. Gracias
What can be used to lift someone?

Why don't you give him a down stairs room😮
Walking up and down stairs is dangerous.

Thank you for Sharing great video and tips
Thank you for the video. It’s helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
So what device would be best to lift someone up? I have difficulty lifting my dad out of the tub or bed and would love to know any assitive device!

What if a patient sways side to side when they walk? I’m thinking it’s not safe but please let me know your thoughts
Thank you! My company seems to think they are a substitute for a lift.
Definitely not!
Thank you for the explaination. What i didn't understand well is that we can't use this belt for lifting a person on a wheelchair, is that so

Thanks so much great information.
May we have permission to use this particular video link on a training page for our caregivers? Thank you!
Yes, of course!
Thank you Ma'am for this very informative video.
You’re welcome!
Thank you ❤

big thumbs up!
Thank you!
You did not show the use of the wider belt with clip buckle.
What can I use for a lift? my dad has no mobility and he's heavy so I pretty much need to lift him into his wheelchair.
There are many types of lifts, I would strongly recommend requesting an OT or PT evaluation to make sure you get the right one for your situation.
@@EquipMeOT can you please share details on lifting belts/equipment or make a video for it?

Completely agree.
Okay negative Nancy
Way to many commercials 🙄
You never showed how to use the black belt.
What?
You demonstrating the use of the belt on a healthy walking person????
This is a joke. 😢
