      Ya, downplaying your playing is always the best bet. Being conceited about your playing makes you sound like an A hole.... even if you can back it up like Yngwie Malmsteen. Case in point, Yngwie Malmsteen lol.

    I'm loving my P Bass kit from Solo. I've gotten all advice of painting from you and going good so far. I LOVED the neck I got, it was actually in better shape than the neck on my Ibanez NDM4, that one was full of rough spots that needed sanding STRAIGHT FROM THE FACTORY I of course upgraded to Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders so can't speak about the pickups that came with my P Bass kit. I'll be buying another kit from them for that LP Standard I've been wanting.

    I knew that you were going to be good, when you said that you were not. Excellent playing. I do have a suggestion. Build one and do the minimum to enhance the possibility of maximum success. Such as the cavity insulation. There are many people out there who just don't want to sink anything into upgrading a DIY kit. As Trevor Wilkinson states, you go the route of building a cheap kit and plan to upgrade you could have and should have bought his kit. The trouble with his kits is that they are so expensive you could have bought a Fender Telecaster, or close enough to it.

  • @LucasCrossleyGuitar

    Great video. I love the way you eventually finished the guitar. I built this same kit and left it totally stock. I plugged it into a Peavey Bandit Red Stripe mic’d it into garage band. Then wrote a simple tune and recorded it. The tune has a bassline and four guitar parts each using different pickup settings and this guitar really does sound great. There are three rhythm parts and a solo. I go through the three pickup positions during the solo. Honestly guys for the money you can’t beat this kit. I’ll be building more for sure. Cheers!

    Nice job there Brad.....thanks a lot for doing the bog standard test of what the kit comes with. I think that you're pleasantly surprised, no? Of course things can be improved, no doubt about that, but you're certainly not starting off with a dog and I think SOLO deserve some credit here. I love the fit of the neck...magic!

      a 1968or69 real Fender white Telecaster it was very cheaply made then but as you know what there worth now its crazy. I think this kit is probably better than that old Fender only my opinion maybe not,Ha.. Thanks again ...Glenn.

    I was wondering if you were planing on doing a series of "How to finish a guitar with Nitrocellulose" but with spray cans, such as Northwest Guitars UK Nitrocellulose paints and lacquers... That would be really cool for those that love the vintage look but don't have the spraying equipment to work with regular Nitro stuff! Thanks in advance! Keep doing what you do man, LOVE the content!

      I did one, but it was titled differently. And I used a vinyl sealer at the beginning.
      The Behlen stringed instrument lacquer is nitrocellulose based, so have a look at my series on how to finish your guitar with behlen’s guitar finishing kit.

    I'm 56 years old and I've played my whole life on some of the finest guitars around and in my opinion the best guitar that I would play the most would be one that I built myself even from the kit. If more people would only do this instead of wasting money at Guitar Center they would be a lot more in tune with their instrument, pardon the pun! Great job buddy!

    Well for an inexpensive kit those pickups are not terrible. For an entry-level to see if you're going to like playing guitar, practice and learn some stuff on it before you move on, it seems reasonable. In the upgrades I suggest you change the selector switch to a fender. 4 way and take advantage of the pickups in series option that affords because it's available and free. Then replace all that cheap Chinese plastic wire with traditional vintage cloth covered. Improve the tone capacitor to a .033uf orange dip, and if you can find it use a braided shielded wire between the volume control and the output Jack In addition to shielding the entire cavities especially if you're going to use non noiseless pickups. If you can't use braided wire to the output, then twist the wires to 4 turns per inch. And then if you want to go one step further to improve high frequency bypass when using the volume control on the guitar install a treble bleed bypass capacitor on the volume control between lug 1 and lug 2. If you Google this you'll find options also on UA-cam. Anyway I'm looking forward to seeing what you end up doing with it.

      Of course I’m going to listen to him haha. It’s usually pretty easy to tell when someone knows what they’re talking about, and I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone who doesn’t know what they’re talking about mention a treble bleed bypass capacitor haha. That’s a pretty high-end mod, in that most of the less knowledgeable folk just keep the tone knob dimed all the time and don’t realize that half of them are basically on/off switches in stock form haha.

    • @johnwattdotca

      robert carra! Please, see if you can follow me... I saw Jimi Hendrix. There is a reason he played
      a right-handed Stratocaster upside-down, and being left-handed isn't the most important reason.
      For the first time in human musical history a stringed instrument had individual, two-way adjustable
      bridge pieces for each string. You could use an oscilloscope, what TV repairmen used, to tune a Strat.
      That's why Jimi was able to use the new phase and flange effects he had custom built for him,
      being a former U.S.A.F. radar technician, and be in tune for multiple overdubs with multiple effects.
      If you have adjustable bridge pieces and didn't use an oscilloscope to tune, you're not in tune enough.
      I have never heard of an adjustable nut. It's all about being as bonded as possible with the neck wood.
      You might be typing about a locking nut, something that turns changing a string into a repair job.
      You don't seem to be the kind of rock star who needs a roadie to come onstage as part of the show.

    Oh you really did turn into Jonny 5 on metal mode haha.
    Can you zoom in on that binding?
    It looks like the kits we get and it took me ages to realise its not real binding, it's a line of ink all the way around the wood.
    I usually keep the control panel too. There's not much difference swapping them unless you want a different colour.
    Put one of those amazon hot rails in the bridge. They're only like ten bucks and they're silent but beastly sounding.

    • @BradAngove

    Hi Brad, great channel. question: I just bought an ES style semi hollow from Solo Guitar and had a quick question on finishing. I plan on staining the top using artist oil paints and then using wipe on poly. Should I put on a sealing compound before the poly or can I just apply the poly with sandpaper to fill the grain and then build up coats from there? thanks in advance, Doug

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  6 років тому

      Hi Doug. You can’t really use the sandpaper method to apply poly over paint. It will sand into the paint and possibly remove some etc. It’s generally pretty likely to screw It up.
      If you put some sealer on there first that works with that paint, you can just wipe or brush on the poly afterward.

    Hello Brad,guitar I got from Solo plays real good totally assembled now .Did you have to lower the nut on your kit guitar mine was way too high and unplayable in first position out of tune.I popped it out and took off from the bottom about 1/16 of an inch and its perfect now.I also upgraded & ordered Fender tailpiece so I could put the Ashtray chrome bridge cover on.I like the look of that.Also installed thru body ferrules for the strings and a Fender logoed neck plate in the back for shits and giggles.May upgrade later the pickups for now sounds good enough.Love the guitar!Glenn in N.Y.

    Are you going to change out that linear tone pot for an audio pot? That and upgrading the tone cap to an orange drop are the only changes I think I’d do to the controls. Maybe add a treble bleed, depending on the pickups you add.

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  6 років тому +1

      I’m not sure if I’ll be changing the pots. I’ll probably do the caps though, and hopefully I can figure out the treble bleed. I’ve never done one before.

    • @bufferkiller
      @bufferkiller 6 років тому

      Brad Angove The treble bleed is so simple you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner. It’s a tone cap and resistor in parallel, and is soldered to the output and input poles on the volume pot. Basically just the two poles that aren’t the ground. Any 150K-ohm 1/4-watt resistor (1% tolerance) in parallel with a .001uF capacitor (I prefer orange drops) will do. The direction in which they are connected to each other and/or the volume pot doesn’t matter. I love it on my mustang, but my friend has a Charvel that has a sweet spot that a treble bleed circuit would kill, so it really depends on the guitar and it’s pickups as to whether or not it would be an improvement.

    • @bufferkiller
      @bufferkiller 6 років тому

      Brad Angove I pretty much always change any B (linear) pot that I get with an A (audio) pot so that it feels more like a control than an on/off switch.

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  6 років тому

      I hesitate to say that they’re necessary, but they do help with string tension. Particularly if the nut slots aren’t very deep. You just need to make sure they’re aligned with the strings. The positioning isn’t all that finicky. A strong retainer bar serves the same purpose. I would just look at a picture of a similar headstock, and approximate the position.

    Hey, just found your Videos and they are super helpful!
    I got a question though:
    What did you do to the low fret you found in the last video of this series? You said there was one and you didn't cover it in this one but you said the fretwork was finished.. Did you do that in a seperate video? I couldn't really find one.

    • @Foodius
      @Foodius 6 років тому

      I think I found the video (how to make an inexpensive guitar awesome (Part 3)) and it helped but just to be sure: did you level down all the other frets with the x-file to match the low one?
      And when did you stop filing? When the marker was off everywhere?
      Also just some constructive criticism: I think it would be easier to find the right videos for people like me if all vids of the series were called the same with just the added "Part X". :)

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  6 років тому +1

      Sounds like you did find it. It was an axe file haha. Using a wider tool may also make this easier, but an axe file is very easy to acquire.
      Yes, I just file until the marker along the tops of all of them is gone.
      I have a standardized part of the title as well as “part x” in each of them to assist with navigating through the series. Obviously I don’t just want people to find them if they’re already looking through the series though. If I don’t add more than that to the title, how do you suppose people will search for/find them?

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  6 років тому

      My apologies. That video’s title did need some work. I was having issues with the length of it.

    • @Foodius
      @Foodius 6 років тому

      Brad Angove Thank you very much for your response! That helped a lot!
      I think I wrote it a bit wrong - the only thing meant was that in all the videos there was “solo music gear“ in the title but in the one I searched for there wasn't.
      Also these two videos had “Part 3“ in their name, so I thought the other video was part of another series. That's all I meant with my “critic".

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  6 років тому +1

      I modified the title to include that. You were right; it was a bit confusing.

  • @Arryhall
    @Arryhall 6 років тому

    I'd say sick the rail in but go for a push pull pot to split it. I shoved a rail in my tele but really missed the tele twang of the single so shoved a push pull split on the tone. The treble bleed only works when you turn the guitar volume knob down. As the volume drops, the tone muddies up but with a treble bleed, it doesn't. I rarely turn the knobs down, just use them as on/off switches so my bleed mods are pretty much pointless.

    • @BradAngove
      @BradAngove  6 років тому +1

      I like to keep my volume and tone down just slightly when I’m using a boosted crunch channel so I can use them as a bit of an extra boost when I want one.
