  • Man overboard. Depending on where you are and how you are or are not prepared this might mean death. Here we look at west coast TNP Zodiac boat operations and how we prepared for this eventuality. Subject covered: hypothermia prevention, personal locator beacon signaling, mirror signaling, survival whistles, on-water flashlights, ocean survival vest organization and use, shark knives, utility knives, boat emergency supplies, tool selection, PFD choice, color selection, VHF marine radio selection, use of GPS, yachting lanyards, and more. Filmed on location on the Pacific coast dockside, if you play or work in water locations you might learn something here that can save your life in the water.

    I love these equipment videos. Even though I may never go boating, it's great information and fun to watch. I'd like to see more bug out kit (BOK) videos too. Nutnfancy's systems are always well thought out.

      nutnfancy Thank you in advance for the motorcycle videos! I'm an FZ-6 rider and motorcycles are how I found this channel. Everything else just sort of fell into place. I'm retired from an AFRES KC-135 Wing in Oklahoma before that I was an MP in an Army/Guard unit and a merchant seaman. Whenever you say nobody watches the MC and adventure videos i wonder if I'll ever see one again. Firearms are important and I'm all about the 2nd amendment and all; but I'd like to get in a few more rides and have a little fun before the SHTF and the mushroom clouds start rising above Armageddon. Fire and maneuver - shoot, hit and reload - then repeat. I get it! BUT . . . we both know there's more to life. Give my best to the wife, kids & dog . . . ness! lol!

    From top down, I cover most of our water survival equipment in this TNP systems video. For instance, I can't imagine someone going out on the water these days without the ACR PLB discussed. It's small, waterproof, lightweight and doesn't require annual fees. Add in some carefully selected Spydercos, flashlights, mirrors, Blueforce Gear Ten Speed vest, and lots more and you'll have our system. It works. -nutnfancy

      nutnfancy my problem is your choice of boat. It's a great dingy for in a bay or river.

    • @nutnfancy
      @nutnfancy  7 років тому +8

      It's actually quite capable everywhere. It cannot sink with multiple air chambers. For sure there's better options but they enter an area of high expense, maintenance, bigger size and weight we cannot accept. Jacque Cousteau used Zodiacs like this in the open ocean with high success for decades. -nutnfancy

      nutnfancy Question: Why would you have hand flares on a rubber/pvc boat? Wouldn't there be a great likely hood of melting a hole in the boat if used?

    FYI, when you clip into your life vest make sure you use both D-rings, one on either side of the fastex buckle, to ensure your buckle doesn't open in the unlikely event of a water landing. Many years sailing and one experience of the like taught me that. Love the vid, keep safe out there!

    Great vid, Nutn! Just FYI, the "rust spots" on the H1 pacific salt are probably mineral(iron) deposits from the water. The crevices collect minerals in the water, and that is what appears to be like rust on the H1. If you brush it off, it should fall right off. At least, that's been my experience. Stay safe in your adventures!!!

    Great information Nutn! Love eating at Quinns, hope to run into you there sometime! My house is just right on the other side of Coast Guard island, you could almost throw a rock at it from where you're filming. I appreciate the marine videos, excellent primer for safety based survival systems; I wish all of the boaters in the Bay Area watched these videos! A lot of boaters out there pay too little attention to safety, a washed up body on the Alameda beach just yesterday is a graphic reminder of the seriousness of these activities. Keep up the awesome work Nutn!

    As a Merchant Mariner and long time traditional sailor, and TNP'r, I'm happy to see some marine related perspectives. Love the gear vest idea. I've always worked with a belt full of things, that seems better. At work I often have a VHF & UHF chest rig for portable comms.
    Always keep that radio on and cranked up on 16. Can't tell you how many time I wished the boat I was worried about would just answer the radio.
    Should clip your lanyard to both d-rings. I've seen the buckle on a best break from being clipped to one ring. Although, the fall was from higher with a strong shock load.

    Having grown up on the San Francisco bay I can say be careful in that zodiac as I have seen and had to rescue a fair number of people on the bay who went out in on the bay when the weather turned and got into a lot of trouble, with a boat that was a little to small for how far they ventured out into the bay/ocean.

    Amazing video. I watched it twice and took notes. I just finished up my small duck hunting boat with collapsible blind, and I was in the process of putting together gear and a bow bag. I dig that acr beacon, in late fall and winter that could be a life saver for sure. Big problem with all my stuff is everything is camo and dark for duck hunting. I do have strobes and whistles attached to my camo inflatable pfds. solid vid!

    This may sound funny, but have you ever considered trim tabs for the boat? They make self contained hydraulic trim tabs that help the boat get on plane quick, with significantly less bow rise, and in the chop it keeps the boat from bouncing up and down (porpoising) on bay type waves.

    At sea preparedness can get pretty overwhelming pretty quickly. I work on a variety of commercial fishing vessels in Alaska. All those vessels have to pass a USCG vessel safety inspection for me to board. Along with that, NOAA issues me a PLB, survival suit, PFD, 30lbs of sampling gear, and says, "good luck!" Since I have to pack everything I need for the season into a duffel and fly, my "go" kit is pretty basic. One of my "most-at-ease-to-have-aboard" items on these boats are the self-deploying EPIRBS..oh..and fire extinguishers..a buttload of fire extinguishers! I haven't gotten to a part in his video where he discusses his flotation but I think the main key to where/how he is having his adventures is using a float coat with a beaver tail (nutn would opt for the dry suit option which I think is legit!) because of all things to get ya, it'll probably be the cold! How long could a lucky/healthy person actually stay conscious in coastal CA waters before the cold got em? Even with a nice float coat with a beaver tail I'd give you less then an hour before you're a goner. Think about that! Something else I've been finding extremely useful in cases of emergency/ordinary day-to-day preparedness? .....electric tape. I sprinkle rolls of tape throughout my various zippered bags and pockets and find that stuff useful as heck when solutions need to be made! The zip tied safety line?!? (Sorry had to mention it) Had me giggling at multiple points during his one. Cheers nutn!

    Good video, but if I can make one suggestion, don't stow your radio in that bag with the antenna detached. Always have it on you, ready to go. If you ever need to send a distress call to the coast guard you DO NOT want to go digging around for it. Things can go very wrong on the water very quickly.

  • @evanmohn3075

    Not sure if this is doable with the motor, but there is a trick from white water rafters for getting a boat right after flipping. More weight in the boat the harder, and having one of your guide boats with the equipment go over is not fun, but your zodiac is lighter than one of those loaded for sure. Watched your boat review and thought you should hear this if you hadn't heard of this somewhere else before.
    What they do is have a piece of webbing on a carabiner attached to their PFD. If the boat goes upside down they clip it to the bow lines, stand on the boat, lean back and flip the boat upright. Did this during a white water rafting class, I do not want to imagine trying to do it in rough conditions than the eddy we trained in.

    One thing a lot of people don't know is how much faster hypothermia sets in in water, even if it's 65-70 degrees it doesn't take long since your skin is basically completely exposed to the water unless your in a dry suit and the water will basically pull your body heat away from you.

  • @stevenammerlaan7133

    Really cool to see what you have on board! Just one piece of advice if you dont mind me saying.. I'd not put that fire extinguisher way out in the back of the bag like it is now, but rather more to the front so it can be grabbed right away without first having to drag all the other stuff out. It's all about being able to respond as quickly as possible whenever a fire breaks out, especially on a boat like this! Sorry, im a fireman so I just couldn't keep that to myself ;) Stay safe!

    Maybe put a single strip of clear tape around those two red emergency\tool containers to make sure they would float for a bit if the boat flipped and they come out (and keep the flares dry).
    Super glad you talked about the PLB I us to do a bit of sailing and we always had one (it may be law not sure) , but at least you know whatever happens you can get someone out there (also wearing it on you is super smart, you hear all those stories of people falling off their boat for whatever reason). With rust on small tools maybe chuck anything in a zip lock possibly with a drip of oil if its just a basic tool, obviously not stuff you use all the time.

I'm thinking it'd have to be a revolver or something similar chambered in an underwater-specific caliber. The bullet would have to be really long. Just a thought.

    Thru my offroading club, I bought an annual membership for Reach Air Medical Services. If I get hurt offroad, or even in an auto accident between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and I need a helicopter to transport me or a family member to a hospital, hopefully it'll be covered by this policy. But then I started thinking about some sort of Locator Beacon. You've brushed on the subject; but, not too many details. Just wondering your thoughts? My thoughts on this policy is even if I never use it, hopefully it'll save others by keeping them in business and getting others to hospital.

    love to see Nutn try out the cult classic Vostok Amphibia dive watch 'scuba dude'. I know he likes Quartz but good value for an automatic and really unique Soviet design, quality. Can get ones with modded dial / bezel

    I didn't notice if you had a compass or not. I know you have a GPS. I'd like to say food, water, blankets, and a spare gas tank are extremely good to have on a boat. I remember being on a 41' UTB back in '91. We passed by a boat of 5 survivors who were blown deep into the mangroves of Lake Pontchartrain. We couldn't see them nor hear them. They had no supplies and a big storm was a few hours away. Were it not for the Coast Guard Auxiliary plane who located them, they'd have probably died of exposure that night. I remember the surprise on the boat owner's face when he asked the Coxswain if we'd have come back a second time looking for them. His answer was, "No, you're lucky that plane spotted you."

      It's amazing how ill-equipped people can be and still be totally comfortable. I guess it's a matter of trusting in the safety net a little more than they should. There are a couple compasses in the boat with us, usually in our vests. -Doodle

    Nutn, in the forward equipment pouch, please store that 18650 better. If it shorts out in the pouch it will cause a fire. Plus the wrap is damaged with a hole in it causing more places for it to short out. At least wrap the ends with electrical tape or put it in a bag.

    Any plans to review the Savage MSR 10 Hunter in .308? Curious how it stacks up against the other AR-10 and .308 platforms on the market.

    You need to do a Commiefornia edc video. What you carry when you are visiting the People's Republic when you can't carry standard capacity mags. Or Ar's with pistol grips. Or, Kel-tec PF9's, Walther PPQ's, and Glock Gen 4, or pretty much anything that you could actually use to successfully protect yourself.

    *Your lifeline is only attached to the boat by those two plastic zipties???*
    *I don't think zipties are weight bearing.It looks like a major weak link and a potential risk.*
    *I would use a metal chain and a carabiner to secure your line to that bench.*
    *Possibly some rope, but not a ziptie.*

    • @derekflake4076

      JoeDurobot zip ties the size he used hold about 75 pounds.

    • @JoeDurobot
      @JoeDurobot 7 років тому

      *75 pounds? That's nothing. Even with 2 it's 150 pounds.I doubt Nutn is lighter than that with all his gear on.*
      *He will be even heavier if he goes over board and his clothes get wet.*
      *I doubt you would go climbing and use zip ties instead of a carabiner.*

    • @JoeDurobot
      @JoeDurobot 7 років тому

      *Not to mention it looks like the metal bench has sharp edges.*
      *If you pull on that rop it will cut the zipties right off.*

      JoeDurobot maybe I missed what your talking about because I only saw two utility pouches with tools inside held by zip ties, so I wondered why you were making a big deal about it. Referring to his utility pouches as "lifelines". So I must have missed what your criticizing

    • @JoeDurobot
      @JoeDurobot 7 років тому

      *Look at **33:55** , he's showing that his lifeline (the rope connecting his life jacket to the boat) is only secured to the boat by two zipties.*
      *It's supposed to hold his body weight and then some (wet clothes and gear he has on).*
