  • Looking back over twenty years at the UPRR in the Las Vegas area and vicinity. Several of these locations nearby the tracks are saturated with housing developments, industry and much more. There used to be a time when the open desert provided great views of this mighty railroad. But in Vegas I imagine it is harder to capture. This is a historical preservation project capturing the type of motive power used by the UPRR at the time, and the popular excursions with the UP3985 steam engine and the E9 units trailing behind. The UP railroad put Las Vegas on the map. When the railroad came there was scarcely any civilization in the hot desert although there was a spring oasis not too far that gave some life to the ranchers that wanted to settle there. IN the early 1990s Vegas began changed so rapidly and it has not stopped. I have gone back a few times and it looks completely different. I was glad when our family got there in 1981 that old Vegas was still there. The Dunes, Landmark, Stardust, Frontier, Sands, Riviera, Aladdin and so many more now gone. I did capture most of them on film, being the historical preservationist I am. I captured ole Fremont street when you could drive down it. Today it's set up like a shopping mall. I captured an in depth look at when the change came to the downtown, by photographing the construction of the popular canopy of lights which towers above the Fremont street area. It just wasn't like it used to be. I got so many good shots of Fremont street at night when cars went up and down the street. Anyway, this video is about the trains of the UPRR. I hope you enjoy the sights and the sounds of this mighty railroad traversing the wide open deserts before the explosion of construction that hit Vegas about that time. I was lucky to haul crews for the Railroad for a couple years around this time. I made trips with railroad crews from Las Vegas to Yermo, CA, and from Las Vegas to Milford Utah. All my trips were safe. I got to know most all the crews and some of the foremen working the yard office. In everything you do remember "Safety First."

I enjoyed the wide open views of Vegas! Railfanned in the 80's, when it was open. Moved here in 2017. It is hard to railfan here now. No access, no frontage roads and only 2 grade crossings left. Freeways are jammed. All houses and industrial from about mp 345 (near Valley) to going west to the curves east of Sloan. Loved the Video.

I heard the traffic was down. Back in the 90's there were quite a few day time trains. I remember soime days being very busy and some not so busy. I would say around 15 in a 24 hr period.

Growing up in a region with 2 trains a week, 10 a day just doesn't seem "dead" to me.

UPs used to use Leslies? I thought their main horns were K3LAs and ATSF was the Leslies

Nathan's started taking over in the 90s. Almost all railways used Leslie's during the 20th century

There was a brief period where UP used the RS3s as their primary horn, I believe the K3s started taking over around the time of the SP merger... Now they're loyal to the K5s like literally every other major railway.

@@AbelG8781 somehow I get the feeling if SP was still around, they'd probably still be using modified P3s.

@@trainknut no doubt. They've kept some P3's but almost everything has turned into K3s and 5s
