Charlie Wilson’s voice stopped me in my tracks while I was watching The United States vs Billie Holiday.. I grew up on GAP Band, so I know Charlie’s voice as well as I know my own. Is this film eligible for an Academy Award because Andra Day did a fantastic job (even better than Jamie Fox in Ray, who set the standard for bio-flicks)? She conveyed all the subtle nuisances of Billie Holiday, even the somewhat slurred speech, curse words, and she really projected the beauty of Lady Day, while equally displaying the dark side of her personality. Billie Holiday was a complicated person and Andra Day's performance wasn't your typical corny bio flick type approach, this is my favorite movie. She actually became Lady Day in all of her glory and "rachetedness"! It is easy to portray a junkie as a sad, tragic figure, but Billie Holiday seemed like a fun, down-to-earth person with certain inner-strength, yet vulnerable (an addiction to both herion and bad men). I never knew that she had been harassed for singing the song but they always harass our artists (hell, they even actually killed Jimi Hendrix -- who I hope they do another bio since Andre 3000 SUCKED!).
FYI - I was NEVER a fan of Holiday (I never got past that crackling, off-kilter voice of hers which I found annoying) but now I understand that the "Blues" is NOT meant or supposed to be sung in perfect pitch (at least if it is sincere). Now I can appreciate Billie Holiday's work and understand her talent -- I can actually "hear" her now! The soundtrack was also AMAZING! Uncle Charlie singing a haunting folk song...come on, it sounded like a legitimate song from the 1940s but I know Charlie Wilson's voice when I hear it!?!?!! What a powerful song it really fit the scene and immediately drew in the listener/watcher-- props to Sebastian Kole too!
