yeah, i agree that the extreme negativity is harming the hard rock/metal scene. theres also a weird pride around being a fan of metal which is odd. like youre just listening to something you didn't actually ACHIEVE anything. you aren't tougher, cooler, or more advanced if you listen to metal. i've seen metal heads laugh at people because of their tastes, which is so lame, you just hit play on your itunes, man.

@@RockedNet I can't always necessarily explain why I like what I like, but even not being able to explain it is better than just regurgitating the same old elitist talking points about what's metal and what isn't.
Even liking something just because it speaks to your heart shows integrity and independent thinking--or maybe the better word is independent feeling. Being able to articulate why to someone else's satisfaction isn't necessarily needed for that. As long as your reason isn't solely based on a band's popularity, lack thereof, or metal cred according to someone else's checklist. Whether that's metal elitists', or the equivalent in any other music genre.

The Anime fandom was like this too, but it's really strange you know?
They've turned on Akira because Akira became critically acclaimed and successful.
But they didn't turn on Dragonball Z aside from just being annoyed about it. They didn't like Naruto and Bleach for like the longest time. But they're always propping up Ghost in the Shell as a masterpiece when even that was successful.
It's like the standards keep fluctuating. Goes to show it's all subjective.

The complaints about Poppy transitioning to metal remind me a lot of the hate Job For a Cowboy got when they first came on the scene. They started as a deathcore band, and when they followed up their first EP with a more death metal album, rather than take solace in the fact that the band was playing a style they like, the elitists complained that JFAC had no business playing death metal when they were previously deathcore and that it “tainted” them. I don’t even really like JFAC, but I found that to be so bogus.

My favorite way to trigger a metal elitist: my favorite metal band is Dream Theater.
Some of the Anthrax hate is retroactive, wondering how they're considered part of the Big 4. At the time that term was coined, there was absolutely no doubt they were in. Looking at album peaks through the 80s (initial releases), Metallica was highest, then Anthrax and Megadeth were about equal and slightly behind. But then Metallica hit it pretty big with ...And Justice, and then the black album blew everything up. Megadeth had a huge hit with Countdown to Extinction and really took off. And Anthrax released Sound of White Noise... which was my favorite of all those albums, but just didn't connect. Their paths have greatly diverged since then. But up until then, when thrash was being established, Anthrax was absolutely among the biggest (and in my opinion the best).

I started to wonder if I was a metal elitist, because over the last few months of getting more into older metal music that I never listened to before, learning the many subgenres, what I liked and didn't like, I found that I disliked the same kind of stuff that I've heard elitists are supposed to dislike, as well as liking stuff that elitists are supposed to be fans of. But honestly, I think it's just what sounds good to my ears versus what doesn't, I'm not the kind of person to bitch about bands I don't like, or say no one should listen to them. Music taste is deeply subjective.
I've been a huge fan of Tool for many years, but recently I've become a fan of thrash and traditional heavy metal, my favourites are Judas Priest, Slayer, Megadeth, Overkill, Kreator, and even more recently I've gone down the doom metal and black metal rabbit holes, and I love Candlemass, Bathory, Dimmu Borgir, Crypt Sermon, and even cross-subgenre stuff like Behemoth (blackened death metal).
That said - I hate metalcore. That's not because anyone has told me to - I didn't even know there was a name for the particular type of modern American metal that's been the mainstream for the last 15 or so years. In fact I thought I was just not into metal as much as I got older, but discovered that was not the case the first time I listened to Slayer 😂
I can't listen to Nickelback, because they sound like Country to me, and that's one genre that I just can't stand. I WANTED to like Sleep Token, I'm a big fan of Ghost, so someone recommended I check out Sleep Token. I thought they looked really cool when I saw images of them. But their music is just... meh? For me, anyway, I get incredibly bored sitting through a ST song, waiting for the song to "kick in" but it's just like an 8 minute long intro with a couple of brief build ups which sound like they might be getting somewhere but then it dies back into an intro thing again 😕
Slipknot - this is sad, ok, I was about 16 or 17 when they got popular in the nu-metal years, and all my friends were into them, Korn, and Marilyn Manson. I tried so hard to like all three of those, I listened to them over and over, but I just was not into them at all. I didn't like very much nu-metal to be fair, I loved Linkin Park and Disturbed, but couldn't get into much else. But I pretended that I liked them 🤣 I even bought a Slipknot hoodie and wore it frequently so that I fit in with my friends that liked them. I wouldn't do that now of course, but kids are dumb and insecure.
Even Anthrax, right, 😂 I don't dislike Anthrax, but when I first got into thrash and I'd been listening to Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, my friend said "check out the final band of the big four, Anthrax!" and she sent me this track, and it was okay, but nothing from Anthrax has ended up on a playlist. I think they're a bit too punk for what I was after listening to (I went through a punk phase in my early 20s and I'm over it).
It's also not gender related for me - I'm a woman, and was born female.
I think maybe that it's just the kind of sound that tends to be pumped out by modern bands that falls into genres such as metalcore, djent, etc that maybe just doesn't sound enjoyable to people that prefer older types of metal? That doesn't give anyone an excuse to bully people or bands, just because they don't think it sounds good.
I didn't grow up listening to metal of any kind, and I'd never listened to Slayer or Judas Priest before last year, but hearing them for the first time was like I'd found god or something 😂
Anyway. That was way too long and ramble, but thought I'd offer my perspective as a woman in her late 30s who has listened to a crazy amount of metal of all eras and genres in the last year - and has come out liking and disliking the same stuff that elitists do, but without any bias or agenda 😂

@frozyre7854 Yup. They're relatively split on the black album because while many fans consider it to be the bands "best work" - or at least when they peaked, many are still butthurt because they consider the black album to be when the band "sold out for mainstream popularity". That's honestly what it really boils down to for elitists. They hate when artists they like get popular with "non metalheads" because the elitist no longer has the band all to themselves, and they no longer feel special for knowing about this cool obscure band that you (general "you") have never heard of. And that's the irony of it all! They like being hipsters about the music they listen to, but they hate the idea of hipsters because everyone decided back in 2004/2005 that hipsters were the worst most annoying people alive.

I couldn't find myself gravitating towards much of what it had to offer, sadly. Despite that, I do appreciate that they're trying to shake things up, as modern metal needs more of that, and I can tell everyone involved is talented enough to make something great, so I'll keep an eye out for em.

Slipknot: I imagine that association with nu-metal in the 90s never helped with the purists. I never really got into the Slipknot thing, but Bill McClintock's mashups where he matches Corey Taylor's vocals over B-52s or Spice Girls actually shows off how good Taylor is.
Anthrax: I've been a fan since literally 1987 and they STILL rock my little socks off. Even the 90s material with John Bush is pretty dang good. The only thing I'll say is the Big Four probably should be the Big Six and we need to give Exodus and Testament our ears, too. All great bands.
Poppy: recently heard for the first time after seeing an album mentioned in a RateYourMusic list. Honestly not bad at all! I do like the genre hopping and felt the songs were pretty good overall. Good for her for getting attention in a difficult time to ever be heard by more than 3 people.
Deafheaven: I love that they piss off the TR00 KVLT types. I prefer some other blackgaze artists more, but I'm very glad Deafheaven kicked that door wide open. That style of metal really appeals to me.
Sleep Token: Another band I have enjoyed, though perhaps I do need to see them live for that full experience. Pretty sure some people are mad solely because they got popular and with "normies".
No opinions on the other bands. I admit metalcore hasn't done anything for me, but I find the best use of my energy is to listen to new stuff that does appeal to me and not worry about things that don't.

There are bands out there I can not stand, but it isn't for lame elitist reasons. Things like member behavior and abhorrent lyrics are main reasons I dislike a band. There are bands that I enjoy some of there music, but can not stand certain members (Ronnie the clown and Ivan Moody come to mind). They are either temperamental pre-madonnas or they are vile human garbage (Ronnie, again). There some bands that are not my cup of tea (Black Vail Brides), but I do not hate them for it. Hot take that gives people an aneurysm: Anthrax (and by extension SOD) have done more for heavy music than Slayer. Slayer pioneered fast music, and they're great at it. But Anthrax bought a greater punk influence and humour, pioneered rap metal, were foundational in blast beats in metal, and helped pioneer crossover thrash, all while making high-quality alternative rock and metal in the 90s and continuing to make high quality thrash in the 21st century

Also Andy’s voice is a little deeper, listen closely and you’ll hear it. The only similarity in their voices is they’re both naturally gritty but in my opinion Andy’s grit is more tasteful. Ok here’s my feelings on these bands.
Slipknot-literally my favorite band ever, they are who my dad and uncles listened to as I grew up and they definitely made me the metalhead I am today.
Bad Omens-I really like them. My favorite album is still their first, but the following 2 I do very much enjoy. They’re not a band that I’d say is one of my absolute favorites, but definitely a band I’d like to go see live.
Anthrax-They’re ok. Thrash Metal isn’t really my cup of tea, I don’t hate it but it’s not my favorite sub-genre by any means. Anthrax for me is the third best band out of the big 4.
Poppy and Deafheaven-I’ve heard the names but not the music so I don’t really have an opinion. But with the description of Deafheaven being black metal, I assume I wouldn’t care for them because I really don’t like black metal.
Trivium-my third favorite band (just behind Slipknot and Avenged Sevenfold). All the members just seem really cool. I love the stuff Matt Heafy does outside of Trivium whether that’s appearing in other songs or his UA-cam and twitch channel or his EP with Jared Dines.
Motionless In White-one of my absolute favorite bands. They’re a band I was able to get my friend (who is a girl, metal elitists) into them and Ice Nine Kills so now we have a bond in music that we like for when we hang out together. Literally just a band of good dudes who make awesome music.
Architects-I don’t really listen to them too much but the songs of theirs I do like I freaking love. I’m more fond of their newer stuff (2018 and onward) than their older stuff.
Black Veil Brides-Might lose some people here but I don’t like their music. Haven’t been a fan, probably will never be a fan. I’ve tried listening to them and it’s just not for me.
Sleep Token-If I didn’t lose people with BVB, then I will here, I also don’t really care for Sleep Token. It’s all too slow and mellow for my liking. I’m fine if there’s slower songs, I typically love ballads, but like the pacing of every sleep token song is just eh for me. I listen to their songs and all I think is that it’s not bad, but not good in my opinion. It’s weird because I don’t hate it but the whole time I’m questioning if I do or don’t.

If only metal genres can come together

I thought I was an elitist, but I like Slipknot and love Trivium and Architects. I have no idea who those other bands are. Am I just an old, simple headbanger with good taste?

So, would not vibing with BVB because Andy has defended Ronnie Radke, which is very not metal of him, an elitist take?
