The Most Obscure Sonic Games Ever (Super Obscure Edition) featuring never-before-seen Sonic footage, a response to Cybershell.
Join me on a journey as we do a deep dive into the world of obscure Sonic the Hedgehog games, from some recently discovered cancelled games, to a game on a very obscure hybrid SEGA/IBM system through to the dearth of lost, forgotten mobile Sonic games.

The concept screens done for ‘Treasure Tails’, other than Tails, was all original art. After doing a little digging I was able to find out we worked on TT for about 4 months (with myself, a designer and two programmers). There is a chance that what code was written for it is still out there. How much was done and if it was at all playable, I still don’t remember. (But I am looking into it!!)

Sonic Freehand actually wasn't exclusive to Japan! They put it on a 20th anniversary Sonic app outside of Japan, I think I still have it on my old iPod Touch

Sega did make some temporary Sonic cafes to promote some of the games' releases in Japan, they also did the same with PSO2 but in a somewhat bigger scale since PSO2 is more popular than Sonic there. So yeah, a Sonic Cafe was actually a real thing in the real word.

I really wonder, how Treasure Tails and Astropede would've influenced the Sonic franchise. Maybe Tails would've been shown to having an intrest in tresure hunting in later Sonic. And god knows, what kind of role Astropede could've had in later Sonic games... (That or they'd just forget about him, like with Mighty and Ray.)
Btw, didn't a similar doodle Sonic to the one from Sonic Freehand also appear in a promotial video for Sonic Mania?
That's interesting to think about for sure. And I think the Doodle Sonic has cropped up in a few different places. I think he was indeed in a Sonic Mania promo video.
Sonic Freehand is based on design documents made during the production of the 16 bit entries.
I used to play the Sonic Unleashed mobile port when I was a kid. And I had a ton of fun playing it honestly.
Is sonic unleashed worth trying?

@@gracekim25 mobile or console? For console (if you’re playing the hd version) then I’d say absolutely, it’s a great game but it really depends on how much you can stand slow paced beat ‘em ups which takes up more than half the game

My favourite obscure Sonic game is the official Shockwave port of Sonic Spinball which was done for Candystand. It was lost for a few years, but the game files had been copied to another website called Sonic CulT. Sonic CulT had gone down but briefly went back online in 2018, and the game was saved and recirculated from there. The port was handled by Skyworks (David Crane, Garry Kitchen)

7:34 i have played Sonic Freehand (mainly known as Sonic The Sketchhog) it was featured on the Sonic 20th Anniversary app released in 2011 on the app store. I still have the app on my ipod touch just because of this game! It’s pretty fun and i’m currently trying to remake it for PC

I remember playing sonic unleashed on my fathers phone, it was one of those phones with a keyboard on it.
I didn't knew how to play it, i just know i really wanna play it again to remember the old times.
I feel like the Sonic DS prototype could’ve been a cool special stage for the rush series, taking advantage of the DS hardware of course. a lot more fun that blue spheres, half pipe or the strange sonic 1 attempt

Gee, gotta admit the Last ones (Except the one of Chemical Plant) got me by surprise, i never heard about them until now.
Really great picks, definitely didn't know about some of these, it's always great when a video like this has information even a fan wouldn't know of already, wasn't aware the Terradrive was even a thing or those super early Motorola Sonic phone games.
Also, it seems like Puzzle Construction is a Columns clone and Game 2 is a clone of Dr. Mario of all things lol

I think there should be more games focusing on different Sonic characters, even if the ones that exist already didn’t do that well
Madonna is the girlfriend to "Mr. Hedgehog", a prototype version of sonic who looks like a chibi sonic w/o the muzzle crossed with a 5th dimension imp from Sonic's world (megaverse).

Worth mentioning that Sonic Mars *IS* Sonic Xtreme
Game 2 in Puzzle Constructor is literally a reskin of Dr.Mario (in the same way as Mean Bean Machine and Kirby's Avalanche are reskins of Puyo Puyo)
Game II of Puzzle Construction plays like if Puyo Puyo and Dr. Mario had a baby together.

Treasure Tails, Astropede, Sonic Mars, Sonic DS, Sega Teradirive, Unleashed mobile, Sonic at the Olympic games, Sega café, : knew before (though I thought the Teradrive was custom made, still counts)
Puzzle construction game 2: didn't know (but maybe counts as a Sonic cameo instead of it's own game)
Sonic Hand drawn game: I'm not sure, but I have a fuzzy memory of it
J2ME Sonic games: No idea about (though the Sonic holding a coffee and Sonic J screenshot are familiar, hell that Sonic J screenshot activated my fight or flight response
It seems I am no longer a sonic purest. I only knew 1.25/3 of these games.
Puzzle Construction is more like Puyo Puyo than Columns, with the rotatable pairs, match-4 rule, and the gravity chain mechanic

@@JohnnyVector Shame Sega is allergic to money, otherwise they would've already exploited the Chao Garden to oblivion. And this comes from someone who never really cared about the Chao Garden, but if it has any potential to put Sonic in the spotlight to any degree, then I'm all for more of the Chao Garden, plus they are the perfect concept for the mobile market, but it seems like Sega simply hates money.

you forgot the weird japan only arcade games like the Sonic popcorn flavoring machine, the Sonic police chase arcade game, and the neatest being the sonic space shooter arcade game (all of which were geared tword small children) as well as the japan only arcade game SegaSonic the Hedgehog, the 3 player trackball game
I think Cybershell covered those in his video but it's true, they are all obscure ones for sure.

I was repeatedly chanting “cafe” when you were listing mobile games since I already knew about sonic cafe, and then cheered when it appeared
Don't forget about the Sonic 1 Mobile phone port that was Java, I remember having it on my old Verizon flip phone. It was rather short, but its music was the original Masa Demo versions of the Sonic 1 soundtrack.
As a HUGE Sega Hard Girls/Hi-scoool! Seha Girls fan hearing about the TeraDrive gives me so much validation.

@@JohnnyVector: Yeah. 😅 I was already a huge Sonic The Hedgehog and SEGA fan. When I heard about Sega Hard Girls I got extremely curious and eventually became extremely invested and hey it opened me up to information on consoles I didn't even know exist and I learned about nearly every accessory and anything that SEGA has done in the past. Everything that came out of that is just pure passion and fun.
Sonic DS looks like it could've been really fun if it was finished in my opinion
These are very obscure, and you’re completely right about the mobile Chao game! Though I’d vastly prefer the return of the Chao Garden in a core Sonic entry.
I really enjoyed Sonic Jump on my early touch Nokia Smartphone back in the day. It was a doodle jump style game, with touch pointing controls instead of gyroscope. In contrast to doodle jump it got different stages and simple boss fights. There were different versions of the game, ranging from early java feature phones to later Nokia smartphones like the N8.
I agree, Sonic Jump was a good use of the Sonic IP on mobile

There's another Sonic X game, but it's on some educational handheld and it's shitty. It's also a reskin of another educational game... and was reskinned again.
"Sonic 16" is also part of the "Sonic Xtreme" timeline, same as "Sonic Mars".

The most obscure ones I played was sonic shuffle and the fighting one for gba/ds. Everyone seemed to hate them but I genuinelly liked them

Head-On wasn’t an original title made for early mobile devices, it was made as an arcade game made in 1979, the Sonic Cafe version being a port.

Treasure Tails looks like it was based off of Sonic Crackers' (prototype name for Knuckles' Chaotix) Special Zones, the asymmetric level

time to start printing, Also Samsung in some regions had the license to sell the sega genesis and sega games like sonic 1 and 2, That might be the reason why chemical plant shows up in jump boy
