    I have always seen sign's where someone is willing to "Buy Diabetic Test Strip's", and I always knew it was for the Gold! This is the first video I have seen on taking them apart. Thank you!

      Hi Benjamin, thanks for the comment! Yeah, there is certainly enough Gold and they are super easy to process, could be a nice little money maker if you could get these things by the truckload!

    Great video. It always amazes me on how many different things have gold in them. I have seen people go out scrapping and picking up iron and copper for recycling with the occasional computer but I have never seen anyone just go to the dump or just go out hunting for gold recovering items and then processing all of it. I wonder if someone with enough knowledge could go out and make serious money hunting for gold bearing trash. Maybe someday you can write a small book on all the different gold bearing items that you have found. Have a great day.

      Hi there, for sure, it is amazing how much (or how little) Gold is used in everyday objects. I think the big problem with hunting for Gold is that every type of E-waste has a slightly different processing technique, so you really need enough of a particular type before you bother to process it. I think there are probably quite a lot of guys like me who gather up the stuff over the year, then process when there is enough of a particular type. Thanks for your comment!

    I have a friend that does gold and precious metal recovery for a living. He has a whole setup for grinding everything up and processing tanks for the recovery process. Also some test strips have slightly more gold in them than others, not a significant amount I wouldn't think but maybe in mass quantity it would make some difference.

      Only a little bit, but as a population, people probably go through a billion of things a day!

    I'm seeing the title of the video and thinking to myself of sodium nitroprusside--regarding diabetic test strips for ketone. I'll watch the video when I get a moment. I made sodium nitroprusside earlier this year or late last year, and it wasn't the easiest thing I've synthesized since I began chemistry as a hobby.

    I heard many years ago that the test strips contain gold - so, I've saved most of mine for years... still haven't filled a 100g coffee jar! OK, so I don't test more than once a day - looks like it will be many years before I strike it rich! 🤣🤣

      LOL yeah, very easy to process, but unfortunately not much there! As you say, a little Gold goes a long way!

    Hi can you help me please .
    I can get KNO3 saltpetre easy and very cheap , can I use this in gold recovery as a substitute for NO3 nitric acid .
    For instance could I add to HCL to dissolve copper .
    Any suggestions or ideas would be great .
    And love your video's and clear narrative .

    • @successfulengineer
      @successfulengineer  6 років тому

      Hi Andrew, KNO3 is commonly used to make 'poor man's aqua regia' - will happily dissolve Gold when mixed with HCl, not sure how you would go about using it just to dissolve Copper. I believe there is a procedure for making HNO3 from a Nitrate salt like KNO3. If you have time, simple AP (HCl + Air bubbler + Low Heat + Time) works well to dissolve Copper. Thanks for the comment!

      Just need to know a few diabetics I'd say. I saw your feeder for your sluice - that thing is bada*s I need to make me one

    • @successfulengineer
      @successfulengineer  6 років тому

      Yeah, that feeder worked great, I ended up processing all the concentrates that I ran through it and got pretty much spot on the yield I was expecting, so it definitely didn't lose any Gold. I think I will actually scale the whole thing up a bit more, I really want to process at least 1kg of material per hour, even more if I can.

    But is there any alternative to gold as once I saw a black color strip instead of yellow colour one?

    I wonder ... in time of true calamity in the world, would the amount of Gold in, say, 50 a test strips, buy a small bottle of water?
    In any case the time it takes to process 2,500-3,000 strips for 1/10 gram of gold($5), could be better spent on a job paying $10/hr and buying gold off the market ... even at $1500 or $3000, an ounce.

    • @successfulengineer
      @successfulengineer  4 роки тому

      Yeah, I have always maintained that E-waste Gold recovery is a nice hobby, but it would be hard work to make a living out of it unless you are operating at huge scales.

    i have a gold bar which is heavily contaminated , so i melted it into shot and added a few bits to nitric acid and left it to soak over night . when i checked in the morning there was absolutely nothing left . how could the gold dissapere ?

      And it was from a batch of finger boards I did

    • @successfulengineer
      @successfulengineer  5 років тому +1

      OK, cool, usually when people mention Gold bars it means they bought it on ebay and often there is no actual Gold in it. If you had tap water with the Nitric acid, it is possible that it had some Chlorine in it which can dissolve a small amount of Gold ?
