  • Stumbled on this trick. Had a customer come in with problems and found the ecu to be bad. This car is equipped from factory with an immobilizer system. Many cars around this year will have the same. Simply switching ecu's will no longer work. The code in the key and the ecu have to match in order to start the car. I'm going to show you a way how to go around that for testing purposes. You still need your original key(s) and the original matching ECU. It will not work without those. This will continue to work until you either unplug the ecu, unhook the main battery, unhook the main relay(s) or if your battery runs dead. If those things happened the security light will blink again and won't let you start the car until you do the same trick or unless you reprogram the ecu and/or keys

    I really appreciate how well you did everything you did from the very beginning in describing the problem, to explaining what you were going to do and then explaining what you were doing while at the same time performing the work needing to be done, with one hand no less AND filming it as well as you did with the other hand all at the same time. Fantastic!
    Maybe you could provide a little advice for me after hearing my sad tale of woe.
    I have a 2003 Volvo S40 that isn't getting any power to the fuel pump and like many people here I don't want to pour a bunch of money into it at a dealership where the part that I can buy online for $59 is sold by the dealership for over $700 (not to put to fine a point on it but they also are very proprietary with their software fixes in that outside a dealership it's difficult to find anyone who has the capacity to work on these things in a software sense) and of course you can't bring your own part. Add the expense of towing and then having them holding you over a barrel once there isn't an ideal situation in my eyes. I cannot start the vehicle although it does crank. I was wondering what advice you would give me. I did get a little friendly advice from the parts guy at the dealership who suggested it might be an issue with my "immobilizer" and not the ECU or CEM. Would really appreciate your advising as best you can what you'd do in my circumstance and if you need additional information, I'd be more than happy to provide it. Kindest Regards! Joe

    Peter,
    I having an immobilizer issue I believe with my 98 Lexus gs400. The car will start most of the time with no problem but sometimes when I try to start it, it will crank then start the motor, then will run for less than a second then dies, then I see the key light blinking on the dash. Next, Any attempts to restart the car only cranks the motor over with the key light blinking. After a few minutes with random attempts to restart, the car eventually starts again. I bought the car used so i'm not sure if I have the original key but I'm current using a aftermarket key/reprogrammed with no problems for over a year until now, and I also tried the second aftermarket reprogrammed key with the same problem. I have not tested the original key that came with the car (its an intermittent problem need to test up to 2 weeks to see problems reoccur) but since both aftermarket reprogrammed key have problems I do not think it's the transponder in the key problem. What do you think? Thanks in advance.

      @RevvedUpKnowledge  7 років тому +1

      sorry it took so long to reply. i would start with using your original key that came with the car since it will not cost you any money just a little time. it will also rule out the question if its the aftermarket keys that are doing it or not

    • @hksone5301
      @hksone5301 7 років тому

      It's all good I know you are a busy man. Recently, I have been using the original key with the car for over 2+ weeks now without a problem. What puzzles me is that I have been using the aftermarket keys without a problem for over a year until now. Can it possibly be the receiver amplifier or the key ring coil problem? For now I'll just leave it as is, and use my aftermarket keys for backup; just hope I never loose the original. :) Thanks for your help!

  • @talharafique8913

    Hello Revved,
    first thing to understand the functionality of immobilizer. immobilizer works only when you turn on ignition, if security code match at turning on point with the ECU code then everything keep working until you turn off the ignition.
    keep in mind ignition on doesn't mean you started your engine, ignition means engine can be start but you have to self start it by rotating the key one step ahead.
    if you turn on ignition with original key then its no matter you put anther key or change ECU with other one.
    that's not the bypass.

      you just need a Good Machanic who can reprogram its ECU to match your Immobilizer code.

    Hi,
    Should we address you as Mr. ChickenDinner? ;-)
    You seem knowledgeable and fair minded (a rare combination these days) so I'd like to see what you have to say about the following puzzle...
    I have a 2001 Explorer that a kid (now in the army) had major surgery done on. It now has a 2006 Explorer engine (professionally installed) and a standard tranny where the automatic once was. He told his Dad (who just wanted it out of his driveway) that it needs a new GEM/BCM but I don't want to start just throwing parts at it.
    The "theft" light is on before I even put the key in and I'm not even certain it's a properly coded key.
    When I tried jumping the starter relay, all that happened was the heater fan came on.
    It probably is looking for the neutral safety switch as well.
    Lotsa fun, huh??
    I've been learning about bypasses and your ECU trick sounds promising.
    Do you have any suggestions/hunches???
    Thanks much,
    BE

      +Liberallez sounds like you have a mess on your hands! ok i have a question for you. What ECU is it using? we can start from there. i have done a few automatic to manual conversions and in most cases its still possible to use the automatic ecu/ecm/pcm etc.. what you have to do in most cases is to fool the car is in Park (to start the car and to take the key out of the ign). thanks for watching and commenting on the video and i hope i can help you sort out your issues on the explorer

      Hi,
      After going over the shop manual, the best I can figure is that this car doesn't have an actual ECU.
      It has a bunch of different modules like the power train module, anti-theft/immobilizer, etc. and it has what is referred to as a "multi-function module" which is also called the Generic Electronic Module but the list of it's functions doesn't seem to include anything but body stuff like wipers, windows, etc.
      That module's number is 1L5T-14B205-BE. There is also a large letter B near that number.
      Does all that tell you anything?
      Thanks,
      BE

    • @RevvedUpKnowledge
      @RevvedUpKnowledge  9 років тому

      PCM(powertrain control module) would be the one your going to look for. trying to see if they changed that out or if its still the original one that came with the suv. If they used the original engine wiring harness and is still using the original PCM and assuming it all the plugs plug together(or modified to work) correctly, it should start up or at least let you crank it over. You might want to try and find the neutral safety switch (its the electronic piece that the shifter rod is connected to on the transmission) on the automatic transmission (take it off and plug it on the harness on the car) and switch the switch to the park position.

Had a similar situation happen to me at my shop, someone stole a bunch of keys and I was left with replacing all the keys missing. I had to call a mobile locksmith come out and re program new keys. Did your key and ecm also come with the immobilized ring(reader)? Sometimes you’ll need that too

      +thomas edwards unfortunately i have tried this and it doesn't work on Honda/Acura's . I tried this on an Acura MDX and they share the same immobilizer system. You have to get it programmed. i have a few questions for you, how many keys did they give you and do you still have the other keys (original ones) on the key ring next to the key that starts the car?

Seems like everything is working it's just the immo green key flashes constantly. please ask me more question i really need help. thanks peter for responding.

    I stoped on the side of the road n tried to switch off the engine but the ignition systerm was faulty n couldn't go off until i popped up the hood n removed one terminal n the car switched off.
    Fixed the starter n put it back, but now ever since that time it cranks but doesn't start n the green key is flashing on the dashboard..
    Auto technicians came diagnosed the car n couldn't find any faults.

      @RevvedUpKnowledge  8 років тому

      +TheOwen1974 hmm this is tough without me physically checking the car. I had a similar situation happen to my mother in laws RX300. Ran flawlessly before warmed up, but when fully warmed up it would run way under powered and if i feather the throttle the idle would surge up and down( no check light on or anything). Drove around making the engine surge up and down till light came on. Checked it and codes came back as a bad OCV for bank 1. Changed bank 1 OCV and symptoms were gone. I checked the bad valve by running some current through it and it worked fine but in the car it wasn't working properly.
      Try and run the car long enough while its idle searching so that the check light will come on. I don't think its a faulty ecu. wish i could physically check the car for you! let me know if this helps or not so i can try and help stil

      Hey Victor, thanks for watching!! The original ecu in this car was overheating and would die out after 10 minutes or so of the car being on. It would let me start again after 20-30 minutes after cooling down. It seems like your issue is your keys. The computer isn't recognizing the keys immobilizer code. You can have your keys reprogrammed at your local dealer or a locksmith company. Some shops have those programmers as well. Most high end diagnostic scanners will have that option too if you know anyone with a scanner. Let me know if i can help in any way!

    Hi Peter! I was thinking about purchasing a Toyota Avalon that was jump started incorrectly. The person who has the car says it has no spark or injector pulse.. He say he replaced the computer, but it still won't start.. How is the ECU supposed to be replaced? Also, is getting the car started going to be a challenge?

    • @RevvedUpKnowledge
      @RevvedUpKnowledge  9 років тому +1

      What year is the avalon and ask them if they still have the original ecu. When jumped incorrectly it shouldn't burn the ecu. Only thing that usually happens is the alternator or main fuse will blow before anything else. Should be a real easy fix. In the case that the ecu is damaged, replacing it will need to be synced to your car/immobilizer system with a Toyota dealer grade scan tool or one that can reprogram the computer. In my 10+ years of working I've never seen an ecu that got fried from jumping wrong =) and I've seen plenty of those wrongly jumped batteries

    My SEAT LEON 2014 1.2L TSI's ECM was damaged due to short in O2 sensors wiring, it's confirmed that my old ECM is faulty and I just bought another ECM from junk same car.
    Now my car just started for 1-2 seconds and then turned off due to Immobilizer mismatch between second ECM and the car itself.
    My question is which CHIP I need to replace between two ECMs to match Immobilizer system? which IC stored the Immobilizer code?
    Or How can I program the new ECM in details?
    Below ECM details:
